- Hi, we are Bec, Sam, Isabella & Euan. After selling our house in the UK & travelling Europe in a motorhome for 10 months, we have bought a derelict stone cottage in Ireland. We are keen to try and live an off grid life, free from debt whilst bringing the farm back to its former glory. We are doing this on a very tight budget and plan on doing the work ourselves.
Please follow along on our journey...we need all the support we can get!
This week, the big dig starts and things don't go as planned!

Things are really moving on. Toby can’t believe how lucky he is.
I was holding my breath while Sam was pulling out the old wooden lintel 😂 Cracking job Sam, the new one looks solid. Toby and Nell have stolen my heart. It must be a load off your mind knowing that Toby's hooves aren't going to have problems when the soggy winter weather arrives. ❤
Yep think Sam was too! 🤣 luckily it went well. Yes im so glad Toby will have a dry lot to rest on when the rest of the land will be a bog in a few months. ♥️
Great to see Toby looking so well and contented.
Sam’s face when Beccy said she was keeping the window 😂😂😂 My husband has given me that look many times! I noticed the wallpaper inside the windows, whenever I strip back and see old decor I always think of that person making choices and being proud of the results. I’m loving your little mood board hints - it’s going to look so good ❤
🤣🤣 I know! So rude!
I’ve had that look SO many times 😂
Another solid week of work, a bit of animal husbandry, a bit of demolition and rebuilding and a bit of future planning - what more could you want in a channel. Onwards and upwards - keep up the good work. Slan go foill 👍👍
Thanks so much. Yep stuck on groundworks right now...literally! It's like a mud pit.
I loved how Toby went and inspected the hard surface as you were doing it. A real seal of approval 😊
Hey Sam,Bec and kids, Toby and all beautiful fur/feather babies.
You are the hardest working people I know, building/restoring a stone house and barn , but continuing to pour love into every animal on your beautiful farmstead, Toby really looks contented at last it's as if he's finally realised he's fallen on his hooves and that he's loved!! ❤
I just can't believe how quickly and how much you all have done to the building it's truly astonishing!.
You deserve all the love and Luck in the world, and I just love that very special others see what you're doing and pour back wonderful gifts/things/times etc to your❤❤ channel!.
Love to you all, 😊😊😊
Thanks Sonya. I like to think he's content. I'd be happier if he had a friend here, though. Adam said he felt it was a calm warm vibe when he arrived here to help out and I thought that's it my job here is done...nearly! 🤣
It's looking good, Toby looks ten years younger.👍🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
Your Foster Kitten looks very settled. Toby looks happy with his hardstanding. Please be careful with all those extension cables.
The footage of your animals is so enjoyable! The new kitten is super cute. Your love for your animals just oozes off the screen and warms the heart! Toby is looking so healthy now. Great job on the pasture and hardstanding for him! And the cost and labor, in the end, will be for two donkeys, not just one :)
The windows look great! The original paneling is such a special look, I'm glad you're going to replicate that. It will be wonderful to watch all that you do with the house going forward. It really feels like it's just about "stripped down" now, to its stone, and it about to turn that corner!
Thank you. I can't wait to turn that corner 🤣
It's fun to reclaim and repurpose elements from the original property. They can often be useful and/or decorative and I'm confident you'll find meaningful uses. Toby seems happy with his improved situation and the kitten is just adorable. Thanks for sharing the progress on your wonderful homestead.
Best not to keep woodwormed wood, itll spread to the new woodwork
Toby really is the luckiest boy! I’m hoping to get some rescue donkeys on my own patch of land so this is good learning for me! Also the little kitty is just gorgeous ❤️
Thanks I'm sure you will soon enough. Take my advice....wait 🤣
The background music is always brilliant. Great work on Toby’s equivalent of a red carpet 😁✅✅Well done again Sam, love your attention to detail ✅✅✅
Thanks so much! 😊
Y’all should be proud of yourselves you are moving along with your dreams splendidly. Keep on keeping on
"We're going to keep it" 😂😂😂😂 the look on Sam's face
🤣
Great job on the lintle and Toby's field. Toby is looking hale and hearty. Good luck, folks 👍
Yet another wonderful video - thank you, Rebecca & Sam! You folks are awesome - not only hard workers with a good vision, but caring and loving also. I'm so happy that Emily & Louise recommended your channel months ago! Take care now. :)
Aww thanks.
I'm enthralled watching you tear down a stone at a time and then rebuild it up again. I'm in love with your old stone cottage and interested in learning the origin of it ... This is hard heavy, work so remember to take time for yourselves! 💖
Thank you. We try to take the weekends off but often that doesn't happen.
Brilliant video as usual Becky and Sam. Sam you are a real professional how you are so precise about what you are doing. You both are so careful with keeping your home as authentic as possible. The work done is fantastic. We done on Tobys hard standing. He looks so happy wandering around. Take care and mind yourselves God bless you all xxxx
Thanks Colette. Hope you are keeping well ♥️
Great video as usual with good varied content ! Lucky Toby and new kitten. Love the little inputs of Becs dream visions. Looking forward to the next one ! X
Good to see Toby will have a dry area to stand on. What a job to undertake. Another of your many talents on the Homestead. Enjoying your progress as ever.
Great vid as always you guys.
The hard standing is great, and have to say how happy and healthy Toby looks…he is so much more animated and interested in everything going on.
The house is coming along nicely, you have put so much hard work in…,I know there is a way to go,but you can see results now and that must be so satisfying for you both.
Love watching your progress…thank you👍😉
I'm in the middle of a year time-lapse video and it is good to see how far we have come.
Toby looked at home with the new hard standing, the little kitten is so cute. Another job well done Sam x
Well done. The Homestead seems to be settling in to business and much pleasure in the day. Hardworking and creative people who have learned to appreciate all aspects of surrounding yourself with all of your successes will always make sense out of the changes.
Blessings you all.
Your green spaces are looking lush.
Thank you Karen. Yes the bit we flattened out already looks fully greened over! Such a relief as it was dig too deep last year and nothing was growing properly there
Even Toby gave a hand!😊😊😊
A very happy family of animals. Toby very confused but got his private bodyguard dog Nell keeping him safe. The kitten is settling in ultra fast, must be a scary world given everything is massively larger than life even the chickens got a second look. You will kick off a debate about how young someone is before they get an IPad, even if it just to watch the fish screensaver. Good progress again on the house, you are getting back into your safe zone of wood so the progress will get a further speed boost.
I hope we are a happy family of animals! 🤣
Your dedication to renovating a stone cottage with DIY expertise and creativity is truly inspiring, turning a vision into reality with passion and perseverance. Your ability to breathe new life into spaces reflects your commitment to craftsmanship and transformation. And I am Floating Village Life
Thank you that's really kind. I'll take a look at your channel. Sounds interesting.
The place is really taking shape. Love watching.
Thank you. ♥️
Another great update Sam and Rebecca the rebuilding is coming on nicely pal see you on Saturday for the next update
Great video. Brilliant. Admire your bravery in taking on this project
Great progress, dispite the weather. I especially love the opening scene with your growing managerie. Praying for much needed sunshine, blessings from Co. Meath. ❤
Yes it's been a bit wet recently hasn't it.b
When I've the line full of clothes and they're holding hands or doing high jinks with their legs, dancing in the wind. I get great joy by having a cup of Barry's tea and sit watching them. I think my Mam did it too. One of the simple things in life that is so relaxing.
.
.
Agreed, I definitely need a life...
❤
Totally get it Patricia. Nothing more satisfying! ♥️
I have truly fallen in love with this place and you guys. My favorite channel. God Bless y’all ❤️🙏👩🏻🦳
Aww thank you.
A grand soft day!
All the donkey needs now is a big bouncy ball for him to play with, absolutely amazing some of the wood you took out from the window still looked in good condition even though the outside looked absolutely rotten
Yes if you saw closer up it was completely rotten. Not worth salvaging sadly.
Like the farm animals and the progress of the renovations, I like watching this channel's subscribership grow.
Thank you that's very kind.
Well done guys it's coming alone a treat.
Kindness begets kindness. Your family possess a deep sense of kindness thats why your animals always look happy. I love the chickens because they always come in to inspect each change that happens. Your beautiful dog always checks on everyone and Toby definitely adores you Bec.❤❤
I hope so. He is more standoffish since the gelding. It's taking a lot of time to get his trust back.
Good morning Bec’s and lovely family 😊 Awwwww Toby is looking absolutely fantastic and what a great job you’re doing fur him 😍 Sam your progress is coming along nicely and as I’m a Manc I love hearing your accent and little funny words lol 😂 Take care love Stevie xx
I often worry we sound really abrasive with the Manchester accent. Good to know it's appreciated by a few at least.
You didn't notice, or at least didn't comment: You've passed the 30K subscriber mark!!!! Congratulations and well done to the whole family (and ever growing menagerie)! What a team!
We did notice! 🤣♥️ We put a post on all our socials including RUclips to day thanks to all our fantastic subscribers! Sorry you missed it & thank you for the kind message. ♥️
I like the idea of you making a big old sculpture of everything you found on the property Sam! You 2 are simply awesome. What you’ve done for Toby the donkey-you will be blessed so many times over for doing what you did for that poor beast. I absolutely love seeing all your animals on your videos. And now with the new kitten, I don’t know if I can stand all the cuteness! And that dog, I think the name is Nell? He or she is such a sweetheart, and I love seeing him/her watching over all the other pets and chickens. Such a good dog. You both deserve all the best life has to offer for all your hard work reviving this old house and property. The land will also bless you for that. I love your channel and supporting your mission. I am a first generation American now living in Arizona. But as a teenager, we were all taken back to Ireland by our parents who are from Co Tyrone /Donegal and Dublin. They were five of the best years of my life running wild around the countryside in northern Ireland, and then having fun as a young teenager in Dublin. Stay strong and don’t ever ever ever give up. You were going to have such a wonderful home very soon to put up your feet by the fire and only maintenance work needing to be done.! Ah - keep dreaming!
Thanks so much for sharing such beautiful memories with us. We are very lucky to have Nell. She is a great guardian for all our animals including the kittens. Although I think they overwhelm her some days! 🤣
I love how thick the walls are. It is amazing. Our walls here in America aren’t like this at all. The first time I saw walls this thick, we were in France at my in-laws old, old farm house. I was totally amazed. Much love and respect for all the hard work you and your family are doing. ❤Oklahoma
Thank you. The walls are just amazing aren't they?! Since working with stone ourselves as total amateurs we are amazed at the skill needed all those hundreds of years ago to build this place. 👍♥️
Awwww Toby looks so happy and content since he was adopted by you guys ❤️
Aww thanks. I agree! Although he does need a companion which I'm working on.
Great progress! I like your saving as much as possible of the window casings. Your foster kitty is very cute.
Thank you! 😊
Toby will be so happy as you continue to improve his lots, as an animal lover I loved the beginning shots of all the animals keep them coming
Loved this episode - Toby all sorted and progress with the house ❤
The place is becoming a Donkey paradise it is a wonderful thing that you are doing for all the animals Good luck with the House you all are a credit to what can be achieved with great skill and hard work
I just love the window trim details. The way they are boxed in with the shutters and those round ends on the trim up on top. So charming! I can’t wait for the dream cottage kitchen too! Keep up the great work. ❤❤❤❤
I totally agree! Took a bit of persuading to get Sam to agree to remake those! 🤣
More positive progress guys. Great to see. Adam
Happy that you are being so good to Toby!
Oh are continuing to do an amazing job. What you have done for Toby and in fact all t he animals is simply superb xxxxxxx
Thank you so much!
You guys are doing a fantastic job…. Come a long way.. loving how it s looking and excited for each video update. Glad Becky repurposing some original pieces.. thanks for sharing your adventures.. Toby and all the animals ♥️♥️♥️👌🏼
Thanks Penny.
Hi, what I mentioned earlier in one of your vlogs re a saw saw, was the reciprocal saw Sam used this vlog to cut the lintel re cement to compact the concrete.
Absolutely amazing! The house is coming along so well. Toby and the rest of the pets are happy and content. You are all doing a good job. Your property is now a proper family farm. Alpacas and a few pig pets would be great to see. Perhaps Toby would like a few alpacas, You can harvest their wool and sell it. If you like you can learn to spin the wool and use it to knit with. The possibilities are only limited by your imagination! Thanks from Canada.💖
Thanks so much! 😊 Sam has mentioned Alpacas! Who knows what the future holds animal wise. Need to reign myself in a bit right now though and keep focus on the house renovation
😅I bet Toby will have a new coat before winter!!
I'm loving this 2 Videos a week, helps me get through mine 😊, from not a very nice dull day here in Bury, you are both doing an amazing job guys ❤
So glad! ♥️
Super job for Toby ❤
Toby looks really happy. ❤
The cat chasing virtual fish reminds me of an elementary school joke.
How do you drive a stupid person crazy? Stick them in a round room and tell them to go stand in a corner. I told you it was elementary school!!! 😏
Toby looks very contented with his walkway.
Sam, you are one determined hard-working dude! Good job on the lintel.
That second window's lintel is a proper stone lintel. Leave it if you can. It's beautiful!
How about creating a statue of the many metal bits. It could be a real welcome to the farm! We have a guy here in town that welds metal sculptures. My aunt bought one for her property. It's an eight foot high
Kokopelli. You'll have to look him up on the internet. Cool sculpture though!
See you Saturday!
Thanks Abigail. Great read as always. A sculpture is definitely on the cards!
When you come to connect your internal drain to outside French drain. You could use a 4 inch pipe with a power washer. Dig a hole underneath the footings Place the pipe into the hole, spray the water into pipe. Smack pipe with hammer, use a piece of 4x2 timber in front of pipe. Hope this helps
Interesting!
👍👍👍Thank you. Looking forward to the next videos
Just love your video's ... everything is coming along so nicely ... thanks for sharing
The only problem with you video is that it's not long enough thanks for the video keep up the awesome work guys
Ha ha, yes a few say that! Problem is Sam just isn't doing enough work for longer videos twice a week bless him! 🤣
The donkey looks so content!
Love your choice in music Beccy. So glad Sam got that lintel in ok.
Thank you. ♥️
Well worth getting the timber sash windows, not cheap but nothing else would be near as nice. I did same (went with Munster Joinery) and although I was on a tight budget it was definitely the best choice. I love your sentimentality Bec, for the old stuff, can totally relate! 🙂
Thanks. I am really sentimental! It's a curse sometimes especially when we have to knock down old fireplaces!
Well done you two, as always lovely to see your progress, don't forget if you need extra hands happy to help, Arlene and Spider
Thanks so much guys. Hope you are both well.
The best channel on you tube 💕 thank you you both are iinspirational and a joy to watch xx
Aww thank you
Great work guys 💪
With the drains make as sure you test them all to ensure the flow works before screeding them in. We got that part right however where we went wrong was with the space between the loo waste pipe and the wall. We had left too much space and so ended digging back out the pipe not only once but twice🙈 The waste pipe can be right up next to the wall as you can get a space saving pan connector.
Toby looks very happy in his new look field 😊
Thanks guys. Sent you an epic voice note! 🙄
Well done everyone! ❤
Hi Rebecca and Sam great progress enjoyed your video, educational for all watching on renunciation prosses
kind regards Sean
I just found your channel today! Looking forward to watching your progress! good luck with the renovations..you have a big job ahead of you! Love all the farm buddies you have collected already! And also, as an American, I am enjoying hearing all of your different expressions you use when explaining! And of course the accent! Best wishes from Alabama! 😊
Thanks so much and welcome! Yes Sam has some crazy sayings! Glad you enjoy them 🤣
Just a suggestion, have you considered getting the roof on ASAP ? You can work inside then in any weather and it will also stabilise the building, remember winter is not far away. ( even if you only get the roofing membrane on. )
Yes the trusses fir the barn section are hopefully arriving at the end of next week. Sam wants to get the top floor done and the chimney rebuilt as we are supporting the main cottage roof off the chimney, so that made us change plans to do the floor first.
Ok ok who's the new kitty? Great work guys, love and blessings from Scotland xx
A foster kitten but may make tgis one a permanent feature 😉
Another great job again Sam love the new kitten beautiful xx for Toby
Thanks for sharing your journey. Take care.
Thanks, you too!
Brilliant work and great video, hope all is well, take care
When you're all done, you can make a sculpture out of the " Bits & Bob's" and place it out front in the drive up to your cottage ❤
great video as usual ,wish ur videos were reallly long , and every day lolll , tobys real happy with walk way ,windows out are great ,bring it on the build ,cant wait tyyy xxxkittens well happy n cute n cats love him x
That's really kind. Sadly not enough time on our hands for that. If only I had a camera crew and and editing team!
Lovely footage of all the animals xx
Hard standing looks great. I'm sure you'll get the hang of strip grazing too - field management is as crucial as a proper feeding regime (we have two Clydesdale horses and you can imagine what a field looks like in winter rain and then summer grazing). I like your mix of projects on this renovation - and the idea to keep new windows sympathetic to the old cottage. I also liked your description of the percolating stones and field drains for soaraway of water under the slab. These things will be worth it when you're living in the cottage (eventually). Keep up the good work.
Thank you. Glad you are enjoying the videos and that we keep it a bit varied although some days that's harder to do than others.
The look of Sams face when Becky said she wants to keep some of the bits at 18:05 🤣
🤣 he kept them though!
Great video guys ❤
Fantastic work it’s coming along nicely 👍
Another beautiful video, keep on going!
Very Very Well Done Team Toby!!! Bless you!!! Can't wait until you're able to find his friend. Good to know so much water runs underneath (I've the same at my cottage renovation)
You are doing a brilliant job Sam. It takes a lot of time. and a hole lot of money. But you both will get there.
All of your creatures look fat & sassy. They seem to be having wonderful lives. The work on the house is going so well. Amazing changes every week!! Awesome job on that window lintel Sam. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Thank you. I hope they are having great lives here. Work is progressing but think Sam's ready for a break! 😥
@@theirishhomestead Sam certainly deserves a break. He has been working like a machine!
That’s one very lucky donkey ❤
I hope so. He loves rolling in it!
Things really are happening❤❤❤ Well done with the windows. If you are lucky, you might find 2nd hand sash windows to save a bit of money).
Just discovered your channel a couple of days ago and have been binge watching all your videos watched a couple and was completely hooked caught up caught up with your latest video you put out on Wednesday fair play to sam you were right when you said he was a grafter if I could send him a lorry load of Yorkshire tea I would sending Toby loads of love you all take care looking forward to your Saturday vidio ❤
Thanks James that's really kind of you. ♥️
SAVE GLASS FOR PARTS FOR A SMALL GREEN HOUSE
Only saw 1 kitten,am hoping you have a partner for it . Kittens need to be in pairs😊
Just found your channel yesterday and am enjoying it.
Well wishes from a Mississippi coast Grandma ❤
We are currently fostering 3 kittens for the Roscommon SPCA. We already have 3 cats. They are definitely not alone...although Sam sometimes wishes otherwise! 🤣
You will have nice memories when you are sitting in your rocking chairs by the wood burner, happy days ❤
Great job guys.
Fair play what a lovely family hardworking u are a inspiration to all the people in Ireland keep it up great upbringings for your children
Love the idea of showing off the finds on the property. A sculpture of the bits sounds like a great future feature for the garden.
Would you be able to make some sort of lampshade or chandelier from all the old metal pieces Sam? Would be a nice piece of history in the new house. Great video as always ❤
I can try! Who knows what will be made once the house gets done!
It's really looking good. You're doing a fantastic job
❤
Hello again Sam and Rebecca, a great video again this one. I know what it feels like there with the rain and cold weather. It is the same for us this side too. 😅 But work got to carry on. 😊🙌🙌 Enjoy your day and God's blessings for you all. 🙏🙏
Thank you. 🍀♥️
