I watched her last Stage performance, Its incredible how she still performe all the old hits, with her age, over 70. Blondi, DEVO and Joy Division, are unique and was way ahead of their time. DEVO still is hundreds of years head:D

Nice analysis. Singing is not just about range and pitch and vocal gymnastics. Harry is a master at performance and nuance in her vocals. She conveys “attitude” through her vocals like few other singers. You are spot on about the band. My only nit pic is an earlier example would have been a much better example. There are some amazing YT videos of a concert in England at the height of her career.

Hehe.. grew up listening to Blondie as a teen.. 'Tide is High' is a song I heard on the bus ride everyday. A bus full of teens singing along.
    Memories..
Also reminded me of another old song that we sang along to.. Hehe..

Debbie Harry was the Very First Woman To sing record Rap in Music the Song Rapture. Its stated that she was the Very First Artist to release Rap . but I've heard that somebody did it first can't recall who . she is much older singing this. And it sounds just great now as it did 44 years ago yes 44 years ago

This literally just appeared on my RUclips thread. I don't usually comment on anyhing, however I had to write a wee anecdote that immediately came to me.
I worked as a Stage Manager for a number of years back in the early 80s to the late 90s.
I was very fortunate to work with many household names over that period.
I can honestly say, Debbie Harry was not only one of the best singers I saw live, but also one of the nicest people I had the pleasure of meeting.
Her voice during the sound check & her performance during Blondies set was absolutely phenomenal.
She had the crowd in the palm of her hand within 5 mins!!
Special mention for Clem Burke too, quite simply the best drummer I've ever seen on a stage!!!
To this day, every time I listen to Blondie or hear them or Harry on the radio, the memories come flooding back.

I wonder, I'm even shocked, тhere are so many people who react to Blondie songs and none of them is "Maria". And "Maria" is one of her best songs, I would even say the greatest song. So I wonder - there was no one to finally react to this great song "Maria"!?

If you pay atention, she transmit every instrument with her body. Specially the main guitar. Those short moves un the same mood as her voice.

I remember when this album "Parallel Lines" came out in 1978. I was at a New Years party the last day that year. We all brought albums to play. I put on the album and one of the people at the party said "They will never be big". I responded your wrong they will be huge. The following Summer after this was released as a single it was the biggest song during the Summer. You heard it everywhere. I told him "Never big, eh"? Still love predicting it would be huge!

I happened to have listened to "Parallel Lines" about 5 times in the last 2 or 3 weeks, and I was paying attention to the plethora of vocal sounds she can make. Ostensibly Pop songs, the singing style over them certainly takes away from anything potentially plastic and hollow sounding. She's just gifted with a certain skull and enough influences to have learned how to use it!

8-10 Year old me had such a crush on Debbie.
Some of the great things to watch are when she'd go on TV and they'd force her to lip sync and she would go out of her way to make it so obvious that she hated it. It's so different from how she was in a genuine live performance.
Also remember that while Blondie crossed a ton of genres over the years, at heart they were always the punk band they started as and Debbie was, deep down, a punk queen who started at CBGB with all the attitude that entails. :)

    • @bobgilbert3436
      @bobgilbert3436 2 года назад +1

True that punk thing. They originally were punk, but Debbie’s singing ability / stage presence / appearance took them a whole different direction than they intended. Not a bad thing though. Good for all us fans and they became famous and rich.😀

Not sure when this performance was, but at this point Blondie have been doing that song for over 40 years. They can probably all play it in their sleep. It's hard to know how much influence Blondie had on the music scene of the late '70s into the '80s and beyond. Debbie is still too cool for school! :)

You missed something which is obvious for a guy who was a teenager when her career peaked. When I told my best buddy back then that I liked her (because her looks appealed to me) he frowned at me and said: "She's an idol among transvestites." Once I had heard her speaking voice (which also can be heard on your video) it made sense to me. She sings like a man who softens his voice to come across as feminine and tender. Only unlike these men she does that effortlessly, without visible ambition and almost bored.... Sooo coool *rofl*

Oh, the baffles around the drum kit are to protect the vocal mics from feedbacking. That the drums are on a riser further necessitates this. Earplugs are sufficient to protect against stage noise. If the drummer was wearing earplugs INSIDE those headphones, then it would have to be pretty loud, but how would he hear the sequencer track? It would have to be super loud, which negates the whole purpose. I've recorded tube amps on 10 to get a natural overdrive. Well, at 50 Watts, you can barely hear the backing tracks or the click track, and this is with sealed headphones. I had to be in another room and the click was still full blast. Things like that don't happen often, and those drums are the loudest thing on stage (he hits hard). With earplugs alone, and no baffles, they'd be fine.

The scary thing is that this performance is now vintage! From when they first reunited around 1999. Seems like yesterday, I don’t know how 20+ years have gone by. Actually I'd have to say Debbie is a vocal stylist, in the way Sinatra was. Not a great singer necessarily, but good technique and good use of what God gave her. I wouldn't say she's necessarily a better singer than say Madonna, but there's a lot more depth and content there, and yeah more skill with her vocal instrument. Great reaction!

Not known for being a good singer? Lmao. Easy to copy, huh. It's an original score as well. Not bad for no "vocal training." LORD girl.

In her early days, I was very impressed with the SOUND of yer voice. To me it was such a unique and pretty sound. Her singling has gotten much weaker after the 2010's, and it's clear she can no longer belt out songs like Atomic or Call Me like she was able to do when she was younger.

Watch Colin Haye. He’s amazing. First do his acoustic version of Down Under. Once you do that, his genius will spread. You will love it

I've heard really good singers who can crush Heart and Adele and the like try to do Blondie and.. fail, miserably. Her vocals are sneaky hard! Because to my ear, she is hitting these high notes with this floaty ease, warmth and piercing clarity, and those same vocal lines easily sound forced, shouty, and no longer fit the music. There's a lot of French chancon influence in Blondie and in her approach. That opening lick here, the chorus of Call Me, I don't know any other rock/pop singer that can achieve that quality of brightness, warmth and ease in their voice simultaneously like that! (Now I'm wondering what Bjork would sound like singing this.. probably amazing.. there'd be growls though, lol.)

Debbie's voice and that slightly whiny, nasally, almost on the edge of "nails on a chalkboard" sound has always reminded me of another singer, Gwen Stefani. She does the same thing, sitting along that line of being just the right side of not too nasal and pitchy, which is incredibly pretty and actually technically quite difficult. Interesting that Gwen drew a lot of comparisons to Debbie in her early career, but less vocally, more because they were blonde American women, fronting rock bands in a very male dominated scene.

Really appreciate yr honest critiques. I'm listening to music over 60 years.Theres ten of thousands of songs I dig, thousands I don't quite a few I can't stand usually being overplayed. Most here doing reactions need to be honest not saying the song is good to upset the Patreon or turn off others who see it's not a song they dig. I agree Debby is not a great singer but I dug many of her songs. They started about 79 believe their genre is punk. Keep up the good work

She always had a voice that I call just drones on. When it caught a piece of music it worked. But overall, it wasn't a voice that wasn't really all that good. For about a year she was monstrous. But with her vocal talents she was never going to last. She had her place in music time. Short but sweet.
