Damn! Clem Burke just kills it. I love the drums in most songs but especially in Blondie songs. He is a non stop drum machine. I really appreciate the analysis of Debbie Harry's vocals. She has been a fave of mine for years and she got a lot of flack for her vocals not being that great. She was never punk and she was never off. Her vocals were bang on.
She has an incredible voice. It works with so many musical styles. When she sang straight up rock or pop her voice had a really nice warmth to it. Although I do love her "attitude" voice and, of course, her high/disco singing. "Sunday Girl" had a bit of everything.
I wouldn't say never punk ,they were regulars at CBGB during the "punk" era, not UK punk but new wave punk I'd say, A favourite of mine late 70's ,I wish I still had the giant poster ;)

Clem was the first drummer that I noticed after Keith Moon. It was the first time I heard the "Eat to the Beat" lp. Later, I would discover Neil Peart.
I’ve seen Blondie live so many times over the years, they are always tight and sound great. Clem still drums with amazing energy. Debbie is still a goddess.

This is my favorite song by Blondie. I love Clem Burke's drums on this one, including the studio version. A big regret of mine is showing up late to the venue and missing Blondie opening for the Kinks in around 1978. The Kinks were great, but I subsequently became a fan of Blondie and thus hated missing them.
I saw them on Saturday Night Live in the 1970's. They rocked it out on that small stage. Debbie is marvelous. A driving beat, killer guitar and bass all with her vocals make this a great performance.
I loved Blondie back then, and still do. I was in my 30's, and not into punk, so it was a refreshing to hear good pop rock. Her voice is so unique, as it is loud and powerful, while maintaining a high pitch, which is unusual and makes for a great sound. i still hear their songs on my radio station, and it usually creates a worm in my head that lasts for hours. Thanks Fil for a great analysis as always.

I'm a big fan of Burke as well, but a major difference between he and Moon is in timekeeping. In general, Keith's pyrotechnics were all in time, but frequently Clem's fiery fills are too fast and the rest of the band spends 1-2 measures afterwards finding him again. Once again, I'm a fan, but once you start to listen to a lot of his live shows, it becomes pretty evident.

I think that's why "critics" are called just that--they just criticize for the sake of criticizing. And I agree that it's crazy to do that when an artist expands their horizons, especially when doing so meets with success.
Actually Blondie's Rapture wasn't the first to chart. The first rap to chart was Rappers Delight by The Sugarhill Gang in 1979. Blondies Rapture was the first rap song to hit the number one spot in the USA. Both classic songs today and both sampled very heavy throughout the decades by other artists.

I got the chance to see Blondie at the Fox theatre in Atlanta, GA. The drummer is top notch. I also attended an Iggy Pop show where he was the drummer. One of the best American New Wave bands. Thanks WOP for the post.
The best drummer in the punk/new wave game, excellent and diverse songwriting, and the most beautiful singer of her time who could actually sing with the best of them. Great analysis, and another great video.
Two reasons for that all come down to the same problem - as a friend of mine who was a mastering eng at Mowtown used to say - there are very few places where you can get paid to suck anymore. By the time they started getting noticed they had hundred if not thousands of live shows behind them and had become polished.
MOST bands today are concerned with a WALL OF NOISE. Seems the only time it stops is when the lead guitar or keyboard wants to put out a couple notes. Otherwise, they sound pretty much the same with different beat speed & titles.

Jagger the same question) if they ever thought of playing their songs with a different melody, or for say in a different genre. Justin said (in a slight perterbed tone) it was perfect the way it was. So without creating any friction I left that alone. To me it be interesting to hear it differently. HECK, the song just might make a re-release of it thus more $$.
This rhythm section is so underrated it’s a crime . In their case punk rock means heroine. Pop rock means rehab . Debby has a song where she wrote , “ I’ll give you head and a shoulder to cry on “ . You have to love her .

Hey, Fil, thanks for the trip down memory lane. I have a special place in my heart for Blondie, especially "Rapture." I had never heard anything like it as a young teen. There was an FM rock station from Terre Haute, Indiana that played music that made me feel like I was connected to a larger world. Before the internet there was just no way for us small town/country kids to find out about bands unless we saw them on TV or heard them on the radio. I am so grateful to have the opportunity to explore new, and new-to-me, music on the internet. I'm very pleased when I'm introduced to a new artist/band on this channel. I missed so much wonderful music just by not having access to it. This channel is helping me make up for the deficits in my musical knowledge. Thank you!

First time I realised I was a musician at heart was when I saw this as a teenager. My eyes were on the gorgeous Debbie, of course, but my mind was on that fantastic drumming. Putting him up at the front rather than the usual spot at the back of the stage was a masterstroke of stage setting. And the way that Debbie's voice and the guitar just float above that bed of percussion is perfect.
First and foremost since your channel was on my recommended list a few weeks ago, I immediately subscribed to it. You are clearly the best Analyzer of Artists on RUclips. Now to Blondie, this band was a trendsetter and Debbie Harry is a league of her own!
Yes, the incomparable Debbie Harry! I remember her very first appearance on British TV, an interview with the late, great Tony Wilson. She walked onto the set wearing black leather thigh boots and the tiniest mini skirt I'd ever seen! She was the coolest thing in creation and Tony Wilson, who until that moment had been a contender for the title, suddenly became a bumbling school boy - it was hillarious. I've always loved her unique voice, (especially her higher range though she has a very pleasant lower range, too). I couldn't put my finger on what was so unusual about her voice till you analysed it. Been listening to it for decades and couldn't see the obvious till it was pointed out - it's just a plain, unadorned voice, no vibrato, no huge 'big finish', no frills and as such it's like a breath of fresh air. Good to see Clem Burke getting the credit he deserves, he was a fantastic drummer. Without his energy their sound wouldn't have been the same but he was sometimes overlooked with the focus being on Debbie Harry and Chris Stein. Nice analysis, thanks for all the work you put in on it.
I really enjoyed this. As always, I notice qualities I hadn't known off in the analysis. Your demo of the guitar riff was perfect when I re- listened to the song. I have a greater appreciation of Debbie Harry's vocals than when I was younger. The drummer is delightfully relentless and his metallic gold just adds to the fun
Fabulous performance by Blondie. I was in my late teens at the time and I was enthralled by Debbie's tough girl badass New Yorker attitude when she burst onto the scene. She represented a new type of empowered woman that we hadn't really seen before - different to the classic 'rock chicks' of the day like Pat Benatar, Suzie Quattro, Joan Jett, Stevie Nicks & Heart. I loved watching Countdown every Sunday evening for years. Knowing Molly Meldrum, he would have intentionally played the song he felt would be a hit. Molly, himself a music producer, prided himself on discovering, exposing and supporting new talent.

Wow! I love this song and somehow it got lost over the years and avoided my playlist- correcting that right now. She’s effortless in her singing, the power of her voice is unmatched by any current female vocalist in pop and rock. I was around 11 when I first heard this band and I remember my brother had a poster of Debbie hanging in his room - I’d never saw a more gorgeous woman, I wanted to be a singer because of Janis, Grace Slick and Debbie.
Very nice review. Debbie used to play around the corner from our place. Both at The Bottom Line, and CBGB's. Back in the day, these were the grunge places that were holes in the wall. Places to hear those who had such individual sounds. Such as The Velvet Underground, Talking Heads and dozens of others. Great stuff , Fil! Carry on!

I love your videos and was so happy for this one as I have been a major Blondie fan since childhood. Ive brought hard rock friends to see them live and and THEN they understand why I love them so much. Clem is one of rock's powerhouse drummers, Debbie and Chris, who are both so iconic and yet so underrated as singer and guitarists respectively, rarely get their due. As you said Debbie doesnt showcase a lot of vocal acrobatics like other singers but she's always on pitch and has a unique and instantly recognizable vocal delivery and voice that just got richer with age. Chris was never a shredder but always did an amazing job of creating an "atmospheric" sound. "Shayla" from Eat to the Beat (same record as Dreaming) is a wonderful example of this. Rock on Fil!!! 👊👊👊
Amazing walk down memory lane (was 17 going on 18 at the time) ... Today (or last time I checked) Blondie owns a house not far from where I use to live in Barwon Heads (near Geelong, Victoria, Australia) ... obviously one of her holiday houses around the world.

Oh my, Debbie was so beautiful. Everyone had the hots for her, including me and I am a straight female! The combination of stage presence, vocal ability and great songs were unstoppable. She is still a beautiful woman today although I think heroin did do a number on her body. I am just thankful she survived and is still making music today. I loved this analysis. As I say all the time, I don't know nothin' about music but I know what I like. I think stage presence plays a huge part in the success or failure of a band/performer. I am sure that probably isn't news to anyone who knows music but since I am just a music lover, it wasn't clear to me how big a part that played until recently. I was watching some one hit wonders and realized that most of the time I loved the song but didn't really care to watch the performer.

Great analysis Phil, could not agree more about everything you say. I was one of those who requested this - so thanks. I think playing a B-minor with an open E is the way it is played (not a straight E-minor, but you are right about the pull-offs) - could be wrong though, but it makes a nice transition from the A major chord. The whole gig is great. It was shown live on TV on New Year's Eve 79 - the CD has the full performance, and they do a great version of the Four Tops 'Seven Rooms of Gloom' that is worth checking out.
First time I even heard this song was a in live performance on Saturday Night Live, way back when. I was immediately mesmerized by the drumming, despite being ambivalent to drums as a result of being such a fan of the electric guitar. But this one did it for me, and I've never forgotten it. Liked Debbie, too, of course, and the rest of the band put out some very listenable tunes!
Love Blondie, Nice review Fil, so many good tracks in there back catalogue, Talking Heads were also an interesting band from the era, who weren't afraid to experiment with there sound.

I got the chance to see Blondie at the Fox theatre in Atlanta, GA. The drummer is top notch. I also attended an Iggy Pop show where he was the drummer. One of the best American New Wave bands. Thanks WOP for the post.
The best drummer in the punk/new wave game, excellent and diverse songwriting, and the most beautiful singer of her time who could actually sing with the best of them. Great analysis, and another great video.

Because bands today suck, unless they can tweak themselves in a studio. That's why they focus more on "dance routines" than their "music".
Two reasons for that all come down to the same problem - as a friend of mine who was a mastering eng at Mowtown used to say - there are very few places where you can get paid to suck anymore. By the time they started getting noticed they had hundred if not thousands of live shows behind them and had become polished.
MOST bands today are concerned with a WALL OF NOISE. Seems the only time it stops is when the lead guitar or keyboard wants to put out a couple notes.
Otherwise, they sound pretty much the same with different beat speed & titles.
@Big Bill O'Reilly SUPERB POINT, thanks. When I talked to Justin Hayward (also wrote M. Jagger the same question) if they ever thought of playing their songs with a different melody, or for say in a different genre. Justin said (in a slight perterbed tone) it was perfect the way it was. So without creating any friction I left that alone. To me it be interesting to hear it differently. HECK, the song just might make a re-release of it thus more $$.

This rhythm section is so underrated it’s a crime . In their case punk rock means heroine. Pop rock means rehab . Debby has a song where she wrote , “ I’ll give you head and a shoulder to cry on “ . You have to love her .
1979 was a great year that continued rocks evolution and Blondie was a big part of that ! Blondie was magic to me ! Dreaming was like no other song !
My favourite Blondie song. Clem's drumming absolutely makes it for me. Debbie's gliding and hey-hey attitude is the icing on the cake... Love It!!

Hey, Fil, thanks for the trip down memory lane. I have a special place in my heart for Blondie, especially "Rapture." I had never heard anything like it as a young teen. There was an FM rock station from Terre Haute, Indiana that played music that made me feel like I was connected to a larger world. Before the internet there was just no way for us small town/country kids to find out about bands unless we saw them on TV or heard them on the radio. I am so grateful to have the opportunity to explore new, and new-to-me, music on the internet. I'm very pleased when I'm introduced to a new artist/band on this channel. I missed so much wonderful music just by not having access to it. This channel is helping me make up for the deficits in my musical knowledge. Thank you!

First time I realised I was a musician at heart was when I saw this as a teenager. My eyes were on the gorgeous Debbie, of course, but my mind was on that fantastic drumming. Putting him up at the front rather than the usual spot at the back of the stage was a masterstroke of stage setting. And the way that Debbie's voice and the guitar just float above that bed of percussion is perfect.
First and foremost since your channel was on my recommended list a few weeks ago, I immediately subscribed to it. You are clearly the best Analyzer of Artists on RUclips. Now to Blondie, this band was a trendsetter and Debbie Harry is a league of her own!

Yes, the incomparable Debbie Harry! I remember her very first appearance on British TV, an interview with the late, great Tony Wilson. She walked onto the set wearing black leather thigh boots and the tiniest mini skirt I'd ever seen! She was the coolest thing in creation and Tony Wilson, who until that moment had been a contender for the title, suddenly became a bumbling school boy - it was hillarious. I've always loved her unique voice, (especially her higher range though she has a very pleasant lower range, too). I couldn't put my finger on what was so unusual about her voice till you analysed it. Been listening to it for decades and couldn't see the obvious till it was pointed out - it's just a plain, unadorned voice, no vibrato, no huge 'big finish', no frills and as such it's like a breath of fresh air. Good to see Clem Burke getting the credit he deserves, he was a fantastic drummer. Without his energy their sound wouldn't have been the same but he was sometimes overlooked with the focus being on Debbie Harry and Chris Stein. Nice analysis, thanks for all the work you put in on it.

I really enjoyed this. As always, I notice qualities I hadn't known off in the analysis. Your demo of the guitar riff was perfect when I re- listened to the song. I have a greater appreciation of Debbie Harry's vocals than when I was younger. The drummer is delightfully relentless and his metallic gold just adds to the fun

Fabulous performance by Blondie. I was in my late teens at the time and I was enthralled by Debbie's tough girl badass New Yorker attitude when she burst onto the scene. She represented a new type of empowered woman that we hadn't really seen before - different to the classic 'rock chicks' of the day like Pat Benatar, Suzie Quattro, Joan Jett, Stevie Nicks & Heart. I loved watching Countdown every Sunday evening for years. Knowing Molly Meldrum, he would have intentionally played the song he felt would be a hit. Molly, himself a music producer, prided himself on discovering, exposing and supporting new talent.
Thanks for an enjoyable and thorough analysis of Blondie in both their performance and as a band. I agree with what Virginia said about your sensitive understanding of the band's musical identity. From listening to your analysis and the band's history, I think it's safe to say that Blondie's expansion of their musical horizons proved successful. Wow! I love this song and somehow it got lost over the years and avoided my playlist- correcting that right now. She’s effortless in her singing, the power of her voice is unmatched by any current female vocalist in pop and rock. I was around 11 when I first heard this band and I remember my brother had a poster of Debbie hanging in his room - I’d never saw a more gorgeous woman, I wanted to be a singer because of Janis, Grace Slick and Debbie.
Very nice review. Debbie used to play around the corner from our place. Both at The Bottom Line, and CBGB's. Back in the day, these were the grunge places that were holes in the wall. Places to hear those who had such individual sounds. Such as The Velvet Underground, Talking Heads and dozens of others. Great stuff , Fil! Carry on!

Or "Rip Her To Shreds" which was a song from Blondie's punk rock era. Another song with attitude was their cover of "Hanging On The Telephone" which is another song Deborah Harry sings that has stalker vibes just like One Way Or Another.

I love your videos and was so happy for this one as I have been a major Blondie fan since childhood. Ive brought hard rock friends to see them live and and THEN they understand why I love them so much. Clem is one of rock's powerhouse drummers, Debbie and Chris, who are both so iconic and yet so underrated as singer and guitarists respectively, rarely get their due. As you said Debbie doesnt showcase a lot of vocal acrobatics like other singers but she's always on pitch and has a unique and instantly recognizable vocal delivery and voice that just got richer with age. Chris was never a shredder but always did an amazing job of creating an "atmospheric" sound. "Shayla" from Eat to the Beat (same record as Dreaming) is a wonderful example of this.

Amazing walk down memory lane (was 17 going on 18 at the time) ... Today (or last time I checked) Blondie owns a house not far from where I use to live in Barwon Heads (near Geelong, Victoria, Australia) ... obviously one of her holiday houses around the world.

What a perfect pop song. Flawless, I can’t imagine what could make it better. One of my tests of quality is if I get a sense of disappointment when the song ends and I can’t resist a replay.
Oh my, Debbie was so beautiful. Everyone had the hots for her, including me and I am a straight female! The combination of stage presence, vocal ability and great songs were unstoppable. She is still a beautiful woman today although I think heroin did do a number on her body. I am just thankful she survived and is still making music today. I loved this analysis. As I say all the time, I don't know nothin' about music but I know what I like. I think stage presence plays a huge part in the success or failure of a band/performer. I am sure that probably isn't news to anyone who knows music but since I am just a music lover, it wasn't clear to me how big a part that played until recently. I was watching some one hit wonders and realized that most of the time I loved the song but didn't really care to watch the performer.

Great analysis Phil, could not agree more about everything you say. I was one of those who requested this - so thanks. I think playing a B-minor with an open E is the way it is played (not a straight E-minor, but you are right about the pull-offs) - could be wrong though, but it makes a nice transition from the A major chord. The whole gig is great. It was shown live on TV on New Year's Eve 79 - the CD has the full performance, and they do a great version of the Four Tops 'Seven Rooms of Gloom' that is worth checking out.

Clem Burke just goes off on this song, just great to listen to and watch --- the whole song is great, love Blondie.
First time I even heard this song was a in live performance on Saturday Night Live, way back when. I was immediately mesmerized by the drumming, despite being ambivalent to drums as a result of being such a fan of the electric guitar. But this one did it for me, and I've never forgotten it. Liked Debbie, too, of course, and the rest of the band put out some very listenable tunes!
Love Blondie, Nice review Fil, so many good tracks in there back catalogue, Talking Heads were also an interesting band from the era, who weren't afraid to experiment with there sound.

Great analysis of that song. Attitude and vocal technique, Debbie is a real singer.Good song, shining melody, flawless singing and Clem Burke. A drummer in the spotlight in a pop punk song. Why? Just because the drumming is so driving! Burke is on my top five of all time for drummers
