Extremely underrated in my opinion. Excellent singer, songwriter and musician. A choice I’m surprised you made Fil but I should not be. You are A true lover of music and excellent musician yourself. You see talent is not limited to one type of music. This man wrote a ton of songs for other people as well
Neil Sedaka had a an amazing career both as a song writer and as a performer over several decades. His big hit “Laughter In The Rain” has got to be one of the most romantic songs ever. When I first heard it I thought it was a female vocalist the tonality and tenor of his voicing was simply gorgeous. And his ability to sing in a higher key was a perfect complement to Elton John’s vocals on “Bad Blood” which was a great pop rock tune. I hope Fil analyzes those songs, they’re such amazing compositions and arrangements.
Laughter In The Rain his biggest hit but it almost got beaten to the punch. Lea Roberts put out a version of it 2 weeks before Sedaka was due to release his and as soon as he heard it he managed to rush release the single and go straight to #1
The mid-‘70s was a great time for Sedaka. Around that same time, he also did a great remake of “Breaking Up is Hard to Do”, turning his original pop jingle into a bluesy torch ballad.
What got me to think about him as a singer songwriter and performer is the very fact that Elvis mentioned him at one time about his ability to write, compose and perform. You nailed it Fil. Elvis said the amount of songs this man has written for other people was extremely impressive. I did not realize how many songs he had written for others until doing a little research.
Was in Canada years ago and saw Neil Sedaka playing. I lucked out and my Dad and I got front row seats. The venue Neil played at this hotel was packed! Neil played like he was decades younger. He was sharp and brilliant in his musical skill. Great show. Gino Vannelli was at the same hotel playing but sold out but looking back I’m thrilled I got to see Neil. He is a true rock music pioneer.
Neil Sedaka is timeless, he has entertained generations and has a body of work that has something for everyone. May his life be long and fruitful because of what he has given the world. Excellent topic Fil, thank you.
Neil Sedaka how could I forget about him! Wow what a voice and how evokes the lyrics is just phenomenal! My sister and brother in law used to play him all the time and I remember loving him! Thanks so much Fil for bringing him back into my musical playlists! You analysis is fantastic and top notch and so is your voice as well! You are just the best reviewer!🙏🏻🤍✨
in the 1950's i went to a birthday party where mr Sedaka was hired to perform and at the end of the song he brought me on stage to dance with him. one of the highlights of my life.
My late mom, at age 15 or so, (mid to late 1950s) would've given you 50 thousand likes if she could've. At that age she was already totally bilingual (Brit. English), she loved Neil's faster songs, Ricky Nelson and Elvis pre-ballads. Thank you on her behalf!
Elvis also performed this, just before he died. I found it heartbreaking. Neil's well, when you write the song, you're going to go places the others just can't. I've not heard this before, and found it very, very moving.
He is an incredible musician and what a tome of music he and his partners in music have brought to life. He also has a huge heart and almost everyday he has a mini concert on his RUclips channel, 3 songs to cheer up all who wish to listen. His ego isn't so big that he can't sit at his piano in a Tee and hair barely combed, ending with love to us all and will see you tomorrow, love him much!
I have zero musical ability but I love all types of music. I learn so much watching your reviews. You always impress me with your great appreciation for all types of music and talent. Btw, love the SRV T-shirt. I lived in Austin through the 80's and 90's and saw SVR live so many times. He was always amazing. So many great musicians came through Austin back then.
Neil Sedaka is a beautiful singer and songwriter. Some of my favorite songs during the early 70’s remind me of wonderful years.....I don’t know this one as well... laughter in the rain one of our favorites...thank you for analyzing this amazing singer... Fil, I swear you can play everything on your guitar.
Great Fil, saw him in Cardiff on his last tour of the UK about 18months ago. He just sat at this piano, played and sang all his hits beautifully, no orchestra, just him. It was amazing . Like many I have been watching his lockdown performances. He’s still got it.
I adore Neil Sedaka. Grew up listening to his music and was lucky to see him three times in concert. One of the best American songwriters ever. One of the artists from the Brill Building in the early '60s. Carol King was a friend & crush of his; wrote, "Oh, Carol" about her. His cousin is Eyde Gorme. Was one of the first artist to use layered vocals on his recordings!
Neil Sedaka is a legend but an artist I've never explored. In 1976 I was entering HS and very into hard rock, progressive rock, fusion, and about to start exploring punk. I'm glad you made this video because Sedaka wasn't even on my radar, but after watching his could be some nice music to play around the home.
Fil....great job!!! When you walk us through these varied great vocalists I can't help but thinking that your own voice lends to doing some great ballads. I hope you are not neglecting your own songwriting. And utilize all of what you are capable of doing. 🎶🔥♥️🔥🎶
Great performers understand the importance of using Dynamics. That moves the song along stirring the emotions. Anyone can play a song end to end with the pedal to the medal, but true craftsmen use great dynamics. Sedaka was one of them. Great analysis Fil.
Been a huge fan for pushing fifty years. And a big shout out to Neil for what he has been doing through lock down. Virtually every week day he's done a mini concert of three songs .... well over fifty days and more than one hundred and and sixty songs now and counting .... absolute legend.
Hi Fil! Absolutely love Neil Sedaka....I was lucky enough to be a teenager when Neil was on the radio giving us the best music ever! My favorite was Breaking Up Is Hard to Do....but then I loved all of his music! This song is absolutely gorgeous....Neil could sing, and write beautiful music! I just have such happy memories of the sixties, and his music part of my life! ✌️
I love the way you love and respect all songs and artists. Even the ones I don't really care for. You make me appreciate them more. Nice job, Mr. Pegasus...
Wow...just out of curiosity, I Googled "songs written by Neil Sedaka for other people"...just one of the dozens and dozens (I lost count at 87) was "Breaking Up is Hard to Do", with Howard Greenfield, which was covered by an astonishing 105 artists! (Looking forward to that future video already!) Wonderful explanation of his vocal delivery, yours was cool, too! Thanks, Fil!
When I was a kid in the 1960 and heard Calendar Girl, I was hooked on the melody and the fast beat. The progression of the colorful monthly sayings were so easy to listen to, I thought he was singing to me! “February, you’re my little Valentine.” Thank you, Fil, you took me way back to the great Neil Sedaka and his wonderful performance, for whatever he sang, it was great-and melodically catchy!
I'm only discovering this channel now. I've been listening to this video of Solitaire for years now, and thought I was the only one! Great to see someone analysing it. You have tremendous taste!
He did a concert here just a few years ago, and could still do it. It was like a history lesson of pop music from the 50's to the 80's. "He wrote that one?" was a frequent question in the audience. The answer was, "Yes he did!"
Neil Sedaka such a brilliant legendary song writer with that smooth distinctive excellent vocal! Such great control. Excellent performance! Spot on analysis Fil. Thanks! 😎🎼🎶🎵🇨🇦
Thank you for this analysis, Fil! Very interesting and enjoyable (as per your usual). Neil has been doing little mini-concerts from home on RUclips during the pandemic lockdown. It's been so nice to hear him sing during these times. A day brightener. As are your analyses and livestreams!
Thank you once again for a lovely breakdown...had a tear in me eye with this song, having played thousands of gigs singing and playing since the 70s,.now realising how my vocal approach could have been better and bad habits crept in early on..love your videos ..learn a lot every time.many thanks..
Laughter In The Rain still gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. And here I am now all covered in them again with this song. Thanks, Fil. You're the best.❤❤❤ 👏👏👏👏👏👏
As soon as Neil opened his mouth to sing, I knew you would be singing some of this tune. Similar sound and I mean that as a compliment! My favorites Sedaka are Calendar Girl, Breaking up is hard to do. Grew up in the 60's listening to this fantastic talent. Gotta get me one of those shirts. Oh wait, I still have one.lol.
Phil Cody did write the lyrics for "Solitaire," as Fil noted. Cody also collaborated with Sedaka on "Laughter in the Rain," with Cody providing those romantic lyrics. Cody was an artist in his own right, with a self-titled album on Reprise/Warner Bros. Records in 1976. Three Sedaka/Cody collabs are included!
Great memories of his music.. songs of my youth. Amazing musician, writer and singer! Thanks for the review. Just saw him doing a short song from his home while in isolation.. he still sounds great.
From the same concert he sang Laughter In The Rain and he sounded as great as on the studio cut. Neil is a great song writer and a great singer who sings effortlessly. What a talent! ..A real gem!
Your in depth analysis of vocal performances are second to none. I haven't seen a single one that I didn't like. Keep 'em coming Til. Liked, subbed and rung the bell!
I remember Neil had a big hit in the 1970s and when it was released I loved it. I thought it was a female singing because his voice is soft. I bought the 45 thinking this lady’s name was Neil - unusual. Then while listening more carefully to the lyrics I realized he was a man. The song was “Laughter In the Rain”. It’s still a great song to listen to today. My you have a wonderful singing voice. That’s great that you can hit those notes yourself. Not many people can do that.
I saw Neil in Vegas in the mid '90s. He apologized because the local musicians were terrible. I was very impressed with his vocals. He's a hell of an entertainer and musician. The subjects of your analyses are quite eclectic, and very enjoyable. Thanks.
Another great analysis video. Of Neil's songs, I still play "Breaking Up is Hard to Do" regularly on my Ipod for going for walks. --- Also, love the gorgeous lush guitar playing on the demo of the chords.
In the mid 70s, during his "comeback", I was 15 or 16. While kids my age were into Frampton or Zeppelin, I was into Neil. I just recently started listening to him again. One of my favorite singer/songwriters.
I have really gotten into Sedaka in the last few years. Love his vocals Laughter in the Rain -- just a flawless performance. This version of Solitaire is stunning, the phrasing is perfect. What a gorgeous song.
Neil Sedaka - along with co-writer Howard Greenfield, gave us "(Is This The Way To) Amarillo". Not much more you can say really! Neil Sedaka is just a real craftsman when it comes to songwriting, musical composition and performing. Good analysis Fil. Thank you.
Love Neil Sedaka. He did Breaking Up is Hard to Do twice: the original with the “comma comma down dooby do down down”, and a later version as a ballad.
I saw Neil Sedaka and Phyllis Diller headlining together in Vegas mid-eighties... I was a young, narrow viewed hard rocker at the time, but still thoroughly enjoyed the evening...
Love this, adore all Neil Sedaka has ever done. My favourite song is Last Song Together. It was the final one (at one time) He and Howard Greenfield wrote.
Great singer songwriter! 🎵 I sang along to a lot of his songs because I was always comfortable singing in his key a 😁 My favourite songs of his are "The Hungry Years", "I Should've Never Let You Go" (sung with his daughter Dara) and "Laughter in the Rain" 🎹🎹🎹

"The King of hearts is well concealed"...Heartache makes you appreciate the future Love, that is on it's way, something better is always comming.....when you are ready. We all get to play a little solitaire.....great breakdown Fil.....hang in there.
OMG I love Neil Sedaka but always thought of it as such a guilty pleasure. There was a fantastic documentary on him on BBC4. He was a child prodigy but wanted to be popular so he chose write “pop” songs. Amazing talent 💕

You're awesome. 🙂♥️ In '74, I first heard, "Laughter in the Rain", and like others, thought it was a woman.. 😂 That was my first introduction to Neil Sedaka, and then "Breaking Up Is Hard to Do" (the remake), and then "Bad Blood" with Elton. Thanks Fil..great choice for analysis...another great artist...by the way your amp sounds great similar to a Fender Twin Reverb.. possibly...but definitely a tube.. sound.
Wings of Pegasus I know this is my preference, I would love to hear you sing without all the instrumentation. No question you are an amazing musician, but your vocals are really good and it was nice to hear the purity in your voice. That’s what I love about the great musicians, their vocals are so melodic - it’s like listening to an orchestra contained in their voice alone. You have some sweet skills.
Neil wrote so many songs. A great talent. His contributions to music are large though he seemed to be a regular and nice person.. Great analysis by Fil too. Fil is incapable of providing just an average critique. They are all detailed and sharp.

Exactly. Most of the singers of the last 25-30 years and almost all from today do not understand dynamics.
Neil Sadaka dang my folks listened to this stuff cheers Fil!

Thanks, Fil. 🙂♥️
Thanks Fil..great choice for analysis...another great artist...by the way your amp sounds great similar to a Fender Twin Reverb.. possibly...but definitely a tube.. sound.
Neil Sedaka is one of the most underrated performers. Everything he did was just amazing!!
Wow Fil, you sound great imitating Neil.
Thanks!
Beautiful song. I love just playing chords on the piano. It sounds so rich....
Also, you have an amazing voice!
This is my favorite Neil Sedaka song.
Neil wrote so many songs. A great talent. His contributions to music are large though he seemed to be a regular and nice person.. Great analysis by Fil too. Fil is incapable of providing just an average critique. They are all detailed and sharp.
Thanks!
