Shes's a drummer her timing is impeccable
I love heavy metal. Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Motorhead etc. However, I can listen to Karen Carpenter all day. What a beautiful voice.
And what a shame she died too young.
My husband is 100% the same! He has a soft spot for Karen Carpenter and Dolly 🙂
Same here, she had a voice that ...lets say...in some way tamed the beasts xD
Me too, I love soundgarden, nirvana, smashing pumpkins and the line, but melt when I hear Karen’s voice
I thought I'd be the only "Metal Head " that loved The Carpenters , reading the comments here it seems like there's loads of us which is pretty cool. In Metal I love the power of the vocal and the music. The top metal vocalists all have a dynamic that is driven. Karen Carpenter has a purity in her voice that is unique , it has a dynamic all of it's own.
It breaks my heart to think that such a beautiful and talented person had such a negative self perception that it led to all of the things that ended her life so soon. Her story should be shared way more than it is.
There's a problem with this comment...I can only give it a single thumbs up!
She and her manager were leaving a L.A
restaurant when John Lennon was coming in. He stopped and said to Karen, "I just want to tell you, love, you have a fabulous voice." Karen was astounded. She couldn't believe that John Lennon complimented her! It's too bad that Karen had such a low self-esteem about herself and her vocal abilities.
Elvis Presley told Karen after a show her voice blew him away !! She was speechless !! Never knew her own potential.
@@ferminromerodetorres I hope you're doing well! Many don't understand eating disorders.
I am a binge eater. It's certainly not fun.
Take Care! ✌🏻
Yes, as a teen in the 70's, she was ALWAYS my 'guilty pleasuer'...Velvet is always the word that springs to mind.....Beautiful giel.
Her voice is like a warm, comforting blanket.
YES. and soothing to the soul.
Nice description
Warm blue blanket
Well said
Her rhythm comes from the fact that she was a phenomenal jazz drummer as well 😉.
She didn't like being taken away from the drums. Management and Richard forced her out front supposedly because 'the fans wanted it.'
Karen Carpenter-an angel with a velvet voice!!
I'm a 80's 90's metal singer raised by my Mom who was a professional singer who was known for sounding like Karen Carpenter so this one touched my heart. She has nice tones in her lower notes. I know EVERY Carpenters song by heart thanks to Mom. She passed 3 yrs ago April 1st and I haven't been able to listen to her recordings since cause I just BALL LIKE A BABY! My Mother was the sweetest person in the world. Never judged, had a hard life but always had a smile. I miss her dearly and thank you for this review. I love you Mom!
Nice tribute to your mom. Lost my wife five years ago so I know how certain songs need to be avoided in case of triggering tears. BTW, BAWL Like a baby.
@@harvey1954 most sincere and heartfelt condolences to you.
@@bleedinggreengold5646 Thanks
I'm so sorry for the loss of your mom, I lost my dad 10 years ago and the memories never fade, and it still hurts to think about him and miss him but over time the hurt is a little less and the good memories remain.
Frank Sinatra once famously said there was only one singer he would pay to see and that's Karen Carpenter... Nice Job reacting to Karen.
Actually he said that about Mat Monroe to
Who cares about the Sinatra clown? lmao
@@-scrimyou cared🤡
Every time I hear Karen sing, I fall in love all over again. We lost her so tragically and I miss her. A national treasure.
The greatest female voice of all time.just so beautiful.
I'm 43, and I've loved this song my whole life despite being more a rock/metal guy. It's so damn tragic how often mental/emotional illness takes these amazing artists when they're young. Some of Ms. Carpenter's best friends were Petula Clark, Olivia Newton-John, and Dionne Warwick, all of whom are or were still performing within the last few years. I can only imagine Karen Carpenter would be too if only she'd been able to get and stay healthy. Damn tragic.
Damn diet culture industrial complex and cultural worship of emaciated women!
@@TheDivayenta she had relationship issues starting at home with her parents. I grew up in the 70s until late 80s. Us Girls didn't have weight and body image issues until much later due to the way food is now manufactured. Food now has hormones, soy, soybean oil and deadly corn syrup.
I feel the same way. She should still be here :(.
Do you realize, regarding Karen's Life, Olivia is the only "friend" who never contributed any time or comments in any books or documentaries?
Doesn't this seem rather unusual to anyone?
@@Coupydog I believe that she contributed to Little Girl Blue in some way. She was definitely interviewed
And by the way, she was a fantastic drummer too. It's so sad, that she passed away.
As a die hard Led Zeppelin freak from the 70s, I'm not supposed to admit this, but, I loved the Carpenters. Karen's voice is the most beautiful voice I've ever heard. We miss you Karen 😘
A once-in-a-lifetime talent, Karen Carpenter.
Her voice sounds like Christmas to me and I love it.
I was trying to find the words and that's it: her voice sounds like Christmas to me.
Their Christmas album is actually fantastic. A must listen at Christmas.
I have heard many tracks of her singing without music & she has perfect pitch every time. She was known as 'one take Karen' & you can feel that when you hear her sing
Such a smooth effortless performance. Love her voice.
Karen Carpenter is my #1 female singer of all time. In listening to all kinds of music for over 50 years I have found none that come close to her in any way. She wasnt just the singer. She was the song. Thats what makes her voice the very best.
Took the words right out of my mouth. There's St. Karen.... and then all the rest!
I love and miss Karen's singing... the one-take artist, they say.... perfect pitch, too. Thank you
Thank you so much for this. She is my favorite vocalist ever.
Lovely Karen, she was a light in this f.... World 😢
Karen was a beautifully amazing singer who struggled without help. I wonder what she would be accomplished if she received the help needed. ❤️❤️
Yes it was a Burt Bacharach/Hal David composition and even sounds a bit like Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head. Also, I don't think she was classically trained as a singer, because she wanted to play drums instead. All her singing talent was natural.
She actually did have lessons
@@Rosannasfriend no if you listen to any of Karen’ s interviews she says she never had any lessons. She did try to take lessons from Frank Pooler but he said she had such a beautiful instrument he wouldn’t even touch it!!
@Deanne- so right!
@@Rosannasfriend No. She just wanted to drum, but because Richard needed her to sing for the good of the act she sang. It took a while to get her to stop playing and singing at the same time, until Richard hired Hal Blaine. She couldn't make a case to keep drumming after that. Generally it would be one take in the studio, unless Richard wanted a different inflection somewhere. Which was rare. These accounts are from Richards own mouth.
Even the gestures she makes with her arms and hands are lovely.
Karen's voice is more look like melodic and beautiful
Her soft low voice that she was singing a lullaby
My mom loves Karen Carpenter's music and I grew up hearing this all the time.
Ms Carpenter had one of the softest and sweetest voices in pop music. That sad her health problems.
Brings back memories. A different time. Thank You
Karen Carpenter for me has one of the best female voices of all time, she is so clear, sweet and beautiful it seems the voice of an angel
Not "one", but arguably the BEST female voice of all time.
It's interestng to see and hear a vocal coach actually critique Karen Carpenter, who is arguably the greatest female singer of all time.
Perhaps she's jealous
beautiful, just plain beautiful
This song has been special to me for more than 30 years now, reminding me of a friend I lost far too soon. Took years before I could hear it without greetin my eyes out
I would say that Karen's voice is hands down the best female voice in recording history. And I'll also give her the 2nd best voice. Because nobody else comes close enough to deserve 2nd place to Karen.
I'm 62, and every time I hear this angel sing, it brings a tear to my eye.
Karen, my all time favorite
Humanity was blessed to have known Karen Carpenter.
Hard to imagine that someone with Karen's gift wanted nothing more than to be a drummer. Though she was a good percussionist, there is no question that her voice was the true magic. I miss her still today. Rest in peace Miss Carpenter.
Yes, one of my faves- I miss her
Beth said "her Rhythm is spot-on!"
It should be. She's a drummer.
Karen was the BEST female singer of her day.
Of any day
The most comforting voice ever. Her version of the song Desperado shows off her interpretation of this song .as always I enjoyed your reaction
Karen is a legend. It makes me so sad how she was pressured into singing whe she was so great at playing drums.
Drummers are a dime a dozen. She was good, but denying the world that voice would have been far sadder. Drummer Karen Carpenter is playing hotel lounges. Singer Karen Carpenter will be forever.
She wasn’t pressured.
Beth, seeing your honest love of Karen Carpenter is just so heartwarming. She is absolutely a fav singer, about as our talent as it comes and just incredibly wonderful to listen to!
Great reaction, please react Carpenters Superstar live, Karen have the best voice 🤩
I absolutely love Karen Carpenters voice and singing... it makes me peaceful and relaxed... ❤️❤️❤️

It should also be noted that Karen was a natural. Others have to create those sounds with much more effort. Still, one of the greatest vocalists of all time.
I love your little Beth Roars guy with the little "Raaar!". Cute. Also Karen Carpenter was awesome.
Are you for real???!!!???!😮😮😮 You, a supposed singing expert actually cut off that wonderful dreamy harmonized ending for which "Close To You" is known : SACRILEGE!!!!!!!!😮 OUTRAGE !!??!!😮 Also, I'm sorry to say that major faux pas was downright IGNORANT, As every Carpenters fan looks forward to that ending -- Richard ( that's Karen's arranger brother, by the way) himself cited how crucial that ending is to the impact of the song !!!!😮😮😮😮
Upon further reflection it occurs to me you were so quick to chop off the ending that it seemed like you were in some kind of god awful rush to end your show and run out the door for some Earth shattering reason (shopping ? favourite TV show ? cable channel mud wrestling ?). You have no excuse.😮
So sad, you can see she is struggling with her issues. An Angel forever now🙏
Oh my, spent so many nights listening to this song. Definitely a favorite of mine.
Beautiful voice! Legend!
When I was a younger lad I literally fell in love with her voice. And in my opinion she still is one of the best vocalists. I love their music.
Beautiful voice. Also props to her brother, a wonderful arranger and musician
One Take Karen could sing the phone book and make we weak in the knees!
Voice of an angel. Love classic Rock, Metal etc but love Karen!
One of the greatest female voices of all times. Left us way to soon.
My dear, deceased mother sang this song to me (and occasionally played this performance) when I was an infant (on into childhood).
It still moves me so powerfully to this day. Thank you, Mom. Love you.
Correct. This is one of the most famous songs written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David.
Her voice is pure
Beth is feeling the song!! Love it!!!
As she does for everyone. I have never seen that much joy on your face listening to somebody sing. Karen was an absolute treasure. I absolutely love her. ❤️💚☘️
My performance was with a girl who played piano, my brother on trumpet and me on guitar. It was a High School graduate ceremony. I love this song_ and we did a good job as we were all musically trained. I thank you for the memory. am 65 now and we performed this aged 17. So sad about Karen's illness and young death. She was a great singer and drummer. Thanks for the memory.
An Angel destroyed by the music industry ,the finest and smoothest voice of my youth.
My all time favorite female singer/drummer! Love her voice!
I’m so happy lol you reacted to some of my favorite voices of all time !! I just watched a bunch of your videos … fantastic!
Fun Fact - She was known as "one take Karen" because she got it right first time every time, look it up - fact.
@Beth Roars Karen Carpenter and that beautiful voice is one of the greatest of all times. No back wood tricks no auto-tune just straight up talent. The only issue here with this video you chose is, it's missing almost 40 seconds of amazing chorus at the end of the song. Check another video to see what I mean.
I wouldnt be too quick to critique Karen Carpenter too much, shes one of the very best female vocalists ever heard, her voice is liquid gold
I love that since i was a little girl. I mostly listen to rock and bit of metal, but i've got an eclectic taste of music and i love the Carpenters. That's awesome, thank you.
OMG, Thank you for your analysis. When I was 4 years old in the 70's my parents had just divorced and I didn't see my mother for several years, so when Karen Carpenter's voice came on the radio I associated it with her voice. Even today after all this time her music still touches me to the bottom of my heart. Thank you Beth I send you a kiss from Buenos Aires :)
saw (heard) her in concert '71. The most 'crystal clear ' , Streisand not even close. beautiful beyond anything.
Karen Carpenter was an Angel 😇 sent from Heaven and left us way too soon! One of the most beautiful voices ever heard! The compositions are the direct result of her brother Richard Carpenter who really played to Karen’s strengths as a singer! I LOVE ❤️ the music of The Carpenters! RIP Karen!
I remember hearing the Carpenter's in the 70's and just loved Karen's angelic voice. Such a superstar. I miss that sound so much. Thankfully these songs are still out there. So pleasant to listen to. Thanks Beth for visiting this classic!
Great reaction! Thanks for the vowel positioning comments, those tips are really useful for singers. Have a nice week
Beth, I think you are an incredibly gifted person, so when I say this, I am not just talking about your reactions. You have the most beautifully wonderful way of describing things, in the most understandable way, while still being very technical ... in short, you make the difficult easy to understand. God has smiled on you, little lady, and I for one, am very thankful for you and your expertise. So thank you. The only way I can really repay you for all you do for us is to thank you from the bottom of my heart, AND ... to tell you, you have a BEAUTIFUL singing voice. I wish we could hear more of it. Ok, I'm now fan-girlin' ... and that's hard to do for a guy 😊👍😉🌹
UNIQUE voice and great analysis
The clarinet player is called "electric clarinet" - you can see the wires on the clarinet - its sound is sent to an amp and altered to represent different instruments. In the recording studio, the Carpenters used the famed "Wrecking Crew" as their backing band. On the road, they had a small group of musicians, and the clarinet player plus sound system allowed him to imitate various wind instruments. In the studio, the solo is on a trumpet - here it's a weird clarinet imitation of a trumpet.
And she was a incredible drummer
You get props from buddy rich you bet she can drum
Burt Bacharach and Hal David created so much musical magic. Karen's real sincerity is so beautiful.
I don't know if it's just me, but, great to see you back with your reactions. Watching them used to be an everyday thing and for me, quite relieving after a long day. I guess it's your animated demeanor.
It's so wonderful to see a young person (young expert!) admiring Karen Carpenter. I know I sound 94 but I am 36 and as a kid the Carpenters was my favourite. Her voice is amazing. So is yours, actually! Subscribed :)
Can we declare Karen Carpenters a saint, coz a lot of people are healed with her songs
Thanks for touching on my all time fave! St. Karen!!
As a young lad, I hated the Carpenters. But add on forty years and I realized what an amazing voice she had - rich, resonant and unmistakable. So sad she left so soon. Beth I always enjoy your commentary. You're not afraid to throw in a little moral observation from time to time and I like that! You go girl!
Karen Carpenter was an enigma in the world of music - thank you for giving her a play! She was one of my very favorites, that's for sure - time stops for me when I hear her singing.
Beth - when are we going to hear YOU sing? I caught a little bit of your love for performing in that video...
Karen had the crystal voice of an angel.
You won't see her like again!. This is genius!.
I had forgotten what an amazing singer she was. Absolutely the best! She left us too early. Watching her performing live must have been stunning.
Karen Carpenter is period “The best female vocalist “ EVER! Can’t be touch. Let’s not forget her genius brother Richard Carpenter producer, composer, musician extraordinary!
My favourite alto... God bless
I love how you're not just analyzing her performance but enjoying it as well.
Yeah, but it didn't stop her from doing the unthinkable/unimaginable : SHE CUT OFF THAT FAMOUSLY UNIQUE ENDING TO "Close To You"-- that wonderfull harmony, that icing on the cake ! ! ?? How does one IGNORE such an iconic ending ?!? Well, quite frankly , one has to be IGNORANT-- in particular, ignorant of the Carpenters' first number one HIT !?!😮😮😮😮
Thanks! I feel old. I was on the run up to 'O' Levels in '71.
They are playing the studio instrumental and background vocals while she sings the lead live.
A lot of the music my parents loved I do not but The Carpenters and the Seekers are the two groups I still enjoy to this day. Karen and Judith are probably two of the great voices that nobody talks about.
Singers know who they are.
We often forget or overlook how much Richard did in the duo. Writer, arranger, and instrumentalist. This brother and sister team were great and hard to compete with musically.
This is cool to wake up to. Coffee and Karen at 6:40am
I've watched a lot of your videos on the weirdest metal singers, karen is my favourite female vocalist of all time. I just love that she puts a smile on your face as well. Perfection. Please do more Karen.
I loved Karen! I was born in the 60’s so I grew up listening to her and the Carpenters.
You should check out ‘And When He Smiles’ from the same concert. She drums and sings at the same time, and it’s fully live. Some of the tracks from this BBC show were at least partially pre recorded. Hence, clarinet sounding like a trumpet.
One of the most beautiful female tones ever in the music history. Karen could sing a medicine prescription and still would sound amazing.
Pure Class..!!!
Smooth as silk!!!
Legendary song!!!
