Planning a road trip is always exciting, but have you ever wondered about the real cost behind those miles of adventure? Today, we're going to go into the world of road trips in a Tesla Model Y and uncover the financial and practical aspects that come with it.
Charging your Tesla at home has an initial one time investment of around $500 for the wall charger + the installation. Charging a Tesla at home offers convenience, but what about the price per kilowatt-hour? On average, residential electricity rates are around $0.13-.15 per kWh in the United States. Charging a Tesla Model Y with its 75 kWh battery at home would cost you about $10 - $13 for a full charge.
On the other hand, if you choose to use a Tesla Supercharger, which provides faster charging speeds, the cost per kWh can vary by location. Generally, it's higher than home charging, averaging around $0.28 per kWh. A full charge at a Supercharger could cost around $21.
Quick correction note: The wall charger at home was $1500 including installation not $500 :)
The wall charger at home is an unnecessary expense. simply plug it into a 110V garage plug overnight. Most people dont drive more than 60 miles a day and 8 hrs of slow charging overnight will charge easily 100 miles. Combined with free charging at the office even the slow charging keeps your car charged all the time. In fact unless leaving for a road trip you should not charge beyond 90% to preserve battery life.
That's a good tip, thank you fro sharing!
Charging overnight at a hotel is a huge advantage as you get to charge to 100% and start your day with a plus at low cost.
Not all charging needs to be DC. You can go anywhere with an EV there is always electricity. So you charge on AC slowly while you do other things. STOP FUSSING ! People have driven EVs around the world through countries with no charging networks. Just make sure you have a box of adaptors for all possible situations.
Thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts.

Thank you for watching!😀
Having a Tesla is not cheap charging at Tesla super charging 😢.
Yeah, you are correct.
why is it so much cheaper to charge an ev in Australia than any where else in the world? easy.... we have so many free chargers and super cheap DC chargers.
Don't really know why ,but that I'm glad you guys have affordable charging over there, that is awesome. Thank you for watching and commenting!
This is a prime example of how not to charge a Tesla. These novices were charging at 50% and they charged upto 100%. The worst way to charge. Every one who has ever done a road trip in a Tesla knows you charge to 100% only at home. At superchargers you charge to 80% and you dont hit a supercharger till you are at 20% or below. 20-80 takes only 30 minutes to charge.
We charged at 50% for peace of mind. We went camping, and spent the night in the car. We did not want to be stuck in the middle of nowhere with a dead battery. We are indeed novices though when it comes to EVs, so I'm sure we'll learn more as we go. Thank you for watching and sharing your opinion.
You acknowledge that they are novices. Try offering some friendly advice. That's my friendly advice : )
@@zonapirate Charge 20-80 at superchargers. That WAS the friendly advice.
It depends, the newer LFP battery must be charged to 100%. Maybe that’s what they have in their car
@@stefancosmin2777 LFP CAN be trickle charged to 100% without battery degradation. Not MUST be and definitely not at Superchargers. It takes 30 minutes for 20-80% and another 30 minutes for 80 to 100. If you are trying to travel fast 20-80 is the most efficient. At your destination like a hotel or a campground with an electrical outlet sure trickle charge to 100.
Gas is still less expensive then an EV. Especially when figuring in the extra prizes for the cars. Does the EV solve a issue that does not exist?
I have done a 3000 mile road trip in a Model 3- San Jose- Page Arizona-Grand Canyon and back. Spent 110 dollars on charging. Gas would have been 600 dollars. No way is gas less expensive.
To us, they both have advantages. Based on our pure Gas VS Charging test, the tesla model Y is less expensive than the gas consumption of a small SUV , not by a lot though ( We have a Rav 4 so we are comparing it to that car). Our main issue is the lack of places to charge the car if you don't travel to a main city or destination. EVs are just getting started though, so I'm assuming in 10 years EV chargers will be everywhere. We'll see I guess. Thank you for watching and commenting!
@@katandantonio thanks
None of these numbers are real.
#1 Gas is not $3 anywhere. It's closer to $3.5-$4
#2 the 25mpg SUV, really dood? Really.
Gas was a little over 3 dollars per gallon at the time when we filmed this video where we live. I know gas prices are different everywhere but this was just based on our experience. Anyway, we appreciate you watching and sharing your thoughts.
