2015 Future of StoryTelling Summit Speaker: Glen Keane
Animator, The Little Mermaid, Tarzan, Beauty and the Beast, and Duet
Keane's VR painting is created in Tiltbrush: www.tiltbrush.com
Over nearly four decades at Disney, Glen Keane animated some the most compelling characters of our time: Ariel from The Little Mermaid, the titular beast in Beauty and the Beast, and Disney’s Tarzan, to name just a few. The son of cartoonist Bil Keane (The Family Circus), Glen learned early on the importance of holding onto your childhood creativity-and how art can powerfully convey emotion. Keane has spent his career embracing new tools, from digital environments to 3D animation to today’s virtual reality, which finally enables him to step into his drawings and wander freely through his imagination. At FoST, he'll explore how to tap into your own creativity, connecting to emotion and character more directly than ever before.

I love how he embraces this new technology. So many "experienced" people tend to shun new things. Awesome!
+ColonelBumButt Yea they must have paid him a lot
+Liberz ssbm Should try to not be so cynical.
Invertex I'm just being honest.
That's not the definition of honesty. That's is cynicism, you're choosing to believe the worst instead of being optimistic and believing he is someone that actually could embrace new technology. Judging from the way he talks about drawing, it's easy to see how he could enjoy something like this.
Invertex I honestly believe that they paid him to say good things about this product. I guess it isn't the most optimistic option but it just what I think, are you saying I should force myself to think differently?
Am I the only one who got emotional here? His passion for creative arts is so great he's willing to learn the modern way. This is overwhelming, but in a good way I think.
+Totoro ʕ •ᴥ•ʔ-chan Don't worry you're not.
+Totoro ʕ •ᴥ•ʔ-chan I'm an artist. This was beautiful to me.
+Totoro ʕ •ᴥ•ʔ-chan I totally teared up because he's just so exuberant and amazed about this new technology~~
You're not alone. It's amazing
+Totoro ʕ •ᴥ•ʔ-chan i hear u buddy
Incredible
+KhailAnonymous whatup mang?
+KhailAnonymous Oh hello, Khail.
+KhailAnonymous YEah i know right
Goose bumps and teary eyes, it is so emotionally engaging to see someone with a true passion...
When I'm grown and have seen my share of the world I hope to still have the same sprightly spirit that you can see in Glen Keane's smile.
This is what I needed to hear today. I'm a 33 year old artist in love with animation estranged from my passion. I have been struggling with trying to make time to draw for the past 8 years. I am bitter that I have neglected my art, and am not fulfilling my dreams. I woke up full of anxiety this morning wondering how I'm going to move on with my life and make ends meet as I attempt to get married and move out this year. I was angry about stupid customers at my retail job. Struggled with paying attention at school tonight when I really wanted to doodle on my notes. I bawled my eyes out watching this and watching duet over and over again. I need to draw. I'm broken hearted over it. And I'm sick of adulthood.
+Elfie In Angel City Thou art what thou art
+Elfie In Angel City Research the Law of Attraction. Your dreams are still alive and adulthood can be glorious.
I feel this pain. it's never too late to chase your dreams, but you have to prioritize and stop neglecting your talent. prioritize. make schedules and plans and put less important things on hold. I understand how difficult it is, but it's important. as a baby bird the first flight is always the hardest, some don't even make it, but you gotta try try try or you'll never find time and die unhappy.

i hope you're well now man
Look at how far humanity has come... from the first lightbulb to this. Truly remarkable
+Nathalie A. VR has been around the implementation has just gotten better. Hopefully the technology will become cheaper over time.
I have chills going down my spine . I never heard anyone be so passionate towards their drawings so much.
I can relate, I love my characters like their my own kids.
I'm glad there's others out there who have a bond with their creations
Wow. Just... wow.
My hands are burning to grab those things and start creating. Truly inspiring video.
+Patrik Jensen JUST DO IT!
+Patrik Jensen yeah get what ur saying
+xCRiPPLESx Well... we first have to wait till the Vive is release.
+Victor Almanzar It does kinda play like a great ad for the Vive, but you can do that with any HMD and the right controllers
David Plentl I know I was just referring to the specific HMD and motion controllers Keene is using.
And im here still having trouble drawing a circle.
Now you can experience having trouble drawing that circle in virtual reality!
+Blaskibloski You just have to draw a face, erase some of the details... and there, a perfect circle.
Just practice squares until you are awesome and circles will be a piece of CAKE!
+Blaskibloski Step 1: draw a circle. Step 2: draw the rest of the fucking circle
+Blaskibloski haha don't feel bad, circle is actually one of the most difficult things to draw.... seriously.
I suddenly realized that I slowly start making the face I'm drawing, like the expression I'm creating
Yep. 'Cause you're feeling the emotions of the character you're drawing.
+Anna Ferrara . 0 .
AWESOME! Now I can draw myself a girlfriend
Ikr XD imagine all the possibilities
Whenever I draw, my face always subconsciously takes on the emotion of the character. I've had people ask me if I'm okay sometimes, lol.
This was beautiful. What a remarkable man.
This is a great demonstration of the technology. I wish they would do this more on TV shows to illustrate the advantages that VR these days. Should get this guy to do all the demos.
What an inspiration. He must be so happy to finally be able to fulfil his dream of entering the pages of his characters
Give this tech to the hands of kids and let their pure imaginations roam free!
I would really love to watch more videos of Glen Keane talking about his art or watch him draw his life
I still don't believe that this is the future, but I believe in Glen Keane.
as an artist and a tiltbrush lover i can happily say that this is the best video i have ever seen. i think i can relate to Glen Kaene a lot.
Imagine... Watching the little mermaid with virtual reality headset on and the story is taking place around you in this underwater fantasy world
Yes! Would be incredible ❤️
Even though technology advances with new tools, Paper and pencil will ALWAYS be on my top favorite tools for creation.
Its like the piano, they will never go out of style.
I've said it before and I'll say it again. Can't wait to see future applications of this technology.
The futures gonna be something. It always it.
+ShiftQuick VR isn't anything new, it's just become practical and in demand.
+TheMusketITuckedIt The price of hardware has gone down drastically. It's now affordable and open source so people can have A LOT more access. It isn't entirely about demand or practicality.
+ShiftQuick like virtual porn? Ya, cant wait too!
The look of sheer wonder on his face, even as obscured by the goggles, is wonderfully inspirational.
I can't even describe who cool this is and how warm this made me feel inside. I want to shake this guys hand and tell him how much of an impact his characters made on my life as a kid growing up.
Truly amazing and inspiring to hear about someone like Glen Keane to talk about how much he loves animation and why he loves doing it. I'm so glad he accepts the VR type of stuff that we have now. A lot of people like his age would think that's a bad thing.
I always wanted to be an animator and have been trying to practice. As a 15 year old artist I gotta say I'm excited to try and do what I love doing and I feel like I'm on the right track for that. I just hope many things go well for me. :)
What kind of monster would downvote this?
+Chad Eklund Some people just want to watch the world burn.
ayy lmao
+fook yu too
+Chad Eklund there is no such a thing as a youtube vid without downvotes. why don't people get this ?
+Chad Eklund otakus .
this is one of the people that I just want to sit down and talk with for a few hours, his view of the world around him has to be amazing.
God this seems AMAZING, I want to try this so badly. I can tell it's still not full-formed in the ability to create depth and space (the easiest example is his signature on a flat plane) but obviously it's still new. The possibilities that this kind of technology can create for the future is blowing my mind right now.
Artists have always wanted to create a feeling and atmosphere with their work, now they can literally transport the viewer *into* their painting and actually create a whole environment to convey that feeling. I can't wait to see what this will be like in 5 or 10 years.
As someone who rarely gets emotional, Glen Keane bugs me.
His speeches always get me teary, the man has SO much emotion, so much depth in his words that it just hits me.
Never change, you wonderful adult child.
I've just used this in the office and I didn't want to put it down. Watching someone use it does not do it justice. Once you step into that VR room everything changes. It was amazing...
Thats exactly how I feel when I draw. Stepping into the paper, "wishing the flatness of the paper would go away." I'm glad he put it into words so perfectly
Ive got to get one of those goggle thingys, THEIR INCREDIBLE and so is Glen. Never stop doing what you love man we really apreciate what you have acomplished. He literally created our childhoods and hes also what inspired me to animate. I LOVE YOU GLENN! WE ALL DOOO.
It’s amazing how much his passion moved me. It’s hard not to feel a little choked up while viewing this. Ty
As an aspiring artist, I love the way he talks about the characters he draws and about how they are real to him. I think I need to feel more towards what I draw instead of just drawing for the sake of getting art on paper.
I finally found another person who catches them self living out the characters emotion while drawing them. My oc is smiling, i will smile, my oc is frowning, i will frown. I love to feel my own character's emotion.
Beautiful. In fact, all the FoST videos are gems. Keep it up folks.
I... wow. I smiled and had chills going up and down my whole body throughout the video.
The ability we have given ourselves to share our imagination and even minds is becoming so powerful. Soon we will create the worlds in our head and walk through them with others, sharing knowledge, perspective, and emotion.
The future looks alright.
as an animator this actually made me cry this....This is like a whole new frontier of art.. like seeing the birth of a totally new way to see the world
I think this has to be one of the most beautiful, satisfying videos I have seen in my whole life, I just witnessed a lifetime of passion towards an art, gave another step where he actually is in a space where his imagination and his creations coexist with him, thank you.
Glen Keane has been my role model in drawing ever since I took an interest in animation. It's amazing to see how passionate he is with his drawings. 💙
Y'all just don't how much I love The Little Mermaid....
sighs, i just love his animations, they make me feel alive 🥺
I need to see behind the scenes of that video, I need to see his reaction. This is amazing!
You can draw a 3D life-size Ariel? WHEN AND WHERE MAY I PURCHASE THIS AMAZING NEW TECHNOLOGY?!
the goggles he's using is htc vive, and the program is Tilt Brush. don't know about the "pen" though
+Irfan Rapid I didn't know HTC was in the VR business, cool.
+TheMusketITuckedIt They partnered with Valve.
I love the passion in this guy. Also shout out to the editors! I got so emotional... Great video
I have been a Glen fan for a long time, worked in animation for many years and just started drawing in Tilt Brush this summer, it is AMAZING!
This is so touching. I've been an animator in the PH for seven years now. This video makes me rekindle the joy and passion of drawing and animating❤Thank you for these words Mr Glen Keane!
Does anyone love how the pencil sounds on paper? How his face, transforms his passion into expressions and the form of how ... He transmitted that on paper? In Any character, in every story? .... I'm still in love with animation after these 3 years ... And I think I'll never leave it... Thanks Glen Keane ✍
This man is brilliant, he's taught himself to be a kid. It's kind of hard describing what a kid is like, I'd say that they're seeing everything with purity and a kind of unadulterated look upon the world viewing on the world with new eyes not knowing what to expect from things. Absolutely amazingly impressive. I love him. Not afraid to say it.
This video fueled me with inspiration. I could literally feel his passion and love for art, I almost cried.
I'll never stop drawing and I hope that you all out there who love to draw never stop too c:
i got goosebumps and i feel like crying! he is such an amazing rolemodel as an artist
Im blown away by this VR drawing
This story was very well told. It was quite an inspiration for me to see this artist at play. I am so looking forward to the HTC Vive, along with Tilt Brush. Thank you for ALL involved in the creation of this story. It truly is a credit to you all that this exists.
You guys see his smile ? While he's drawing inside the virtual world. That's gotta be love.
This is the coolest thing you'll see all day ! Freaking awesome !!!
He participated in animated my favorite disney princess, Ariel, therefore I have so much respect for him, and his devotion for his job is incredible.
this made me tear up art is something close to my heart and i hope to become an animator like him and seeing something like this being created makes me so happy
What an animation legend man, I truly truly wish I could do like him and draw something so breathtaking and free feeling...what a dream
I can't wait until this launches. Amazing.
This made me cry. I love this video!
This brought me to tears.
I think if I ever drew my fictional characters in VR, and seeing them being so close and so real, I'd just break down and cry
"The soul of any kind of creative art form is freedom." Beautifully stated.
This just blew me away! I literally jumped up and down for joy when he started 3D sculpting, seeing Ariel and The Beast come to life!!
Man, this guy is responsible for some of my favorite childhood memories! :-)
That massive smile he has at 3:46 is just amazing
Absolutely inspirational thank you for posting this...
Amazing, my eyes are all teary
Very Inspirational and almost had me in tears :) truly tells how we never stop being young.
I will be forever grateful that Glen Keane (and the rest of Disney, of course) brought Ariel into my life. It just wouldn't have been the same without her being what she is- an inspiration, and a reminder of what childhood magic and wonder is.
...Umm, so long as she has a tail, of course!
Wow that tugged a lot of heart strings. Amazing video, and very inspirational :)
G k uses most modern tools from digital environment to 3 Danimation connecting to emotion directy. This is really amazing.
I love this video... It was less about "who makes it" vs "How can I use it?" I swore HTC would be hated but they've humbled themselves and have proven themselves. This is truly thinking outside the box. I can't upvote this enough.
+Brian Hilgefort Yeah I kinda got that sense too. HTC is on the comeback.
Wow, that made me feel warm inside me, wow just wow. Really beautiful thing to see...I can just imagine the possibilities animators now have with VR Technology. Can't wait to see what's in store for the future. What a time to be alive. This video made me want to draw again.
So this is what loving your job looks like.
Beautiful. Emotional. What a brilliant man. ❤️
You, sir, are simply amazing
this is beautiful. why am i crying?
This is...awesome. Inspiring, poetry, heartwarming. It really feels good hear these words from a veteran animator.
Thank. Thank you for helping create the future.
I was a big fan of Bil Keane growing up. ("Ida Know... Not Me!") Now I'm a big fan of Glen Keane!
Truly amazing. I loved this video!
the crazy thing about this drawing in VR thing IS THAT THERE'S 3 DIMENSIONS. PERSPECTIVE. WTF. I LOVE GLEN KEANE
Wonderful world in which I could not dive and where hope is my son immersed. !
Liked, subbed and added to favourites. Truly an inspiring video. As an animation student I can not wait to see what VR tech has in store for us. I am sure the entire art industry will be accepting of the innovations that come out of VR as well.
Holy Moly!!!! The 3D drawings look amazing!! Great video. Thanks for sharing.
This made me cry like mad. Holy crap...
being a professional artist myself.....this freaking gave me the chills....that's pure magic!
The future is so exciting.
I love everything about this video. the whole time I've been saying to myself "oh hey me too!" Now I really wanna try tilt brush
You have the most graceful and beautiful hands.
Amazing. Looks like so much fun to have that kind of freedom create☺
Great artist, awesome tech, pure beauty
Beautiful & passionately brilliant.
That's it, it's why i want the VR. Thanks you.
Beautiful! Makes me wanna go out there and create something!
