      A very fair and unbiased video. Lucky to live in Syney, Australia and have met Jody and Steven a couple of times. Purchased from him personally and bought the 38mm Origin in purple. As an avid collector of over 250 watches from Casio to Rolex I find the Erebus watches are great value. Will be catching up with the boys this week at a Sydney event called Watchfest and the white dial Ascent is next on my hitlist as my GADA special.

    It’s a damn good watch and you are supporting the micro brand community. You can also flaunt it in micro brand groups with pride for your fellow watch nerds to enjoy! Nice review, thumbs up given. At first I thought Jody was crazy to release this watch with so many dial options ... but upon further consideration I realized his genius. So many reviewers have had the same observation, that due to the number of options, it makes it difficult to choose just one. I guess I joined that club too since I wound up ordering two. Adventurine and Blue Helix, one on J style the other on O style. With the bracelets' swap-ability and two different dials, it's like having 4 different watches.

    • @nextonthewrist
      @nextonthewrist  2 месяца назад

      I agree, at first I felt the same on the launch video....like it was too much choice. They all look so damn good from everyone's posts though, and quite different characteristics depending on dial and bracelet. How is the J style bracelet in your experience so far, equally impressive? 🙂👍 - thanks for the comments and viewing by the way 😎🍻

    • @DarthPlaya
      @DarthPlaya 2 месяца назад +2

      @@nextonthewrist There are pros and cons to both bracelets. The O feels solid and well constructed with very refind screws. The J is constructed just as well and because the links are shorter it's easier to get that more comfortable drape around the wrist. The one MAJOR difference between the bracelets is the weight! The J is SOOOOO much lighter than the O, it creates two distinct wearing experiences. The O is my preference weight-wise and the J is my preference comfort-wise. Really glad I got both though!

    Brand history is the reason why I have purchased every Erebus made to date. I have no personal knowledge of anyone in the corporate watch universe. I have been collecting watches for almost 50 years. I followed Jody since nearly his beginning and 90+% of watch content I consume is from JOMW. Concerning big-watch brand and history: As far as I can tell, it is just another big business conglomerate full of corporate turds. As the luxury and prestige of a brand increases, there is likely an increase in cash-grabbers and corporate fat-cats. No one alive today was altruistically cranking out watches 100 years ago. History from that perspective is a subjective illusion - I am on the ground floor of watch history: purchasing a person’s passionate dream; I really relate to and admire his story. Plus: I used to care what everyone around me thought of what was hanging off of my wrist, then I graduated from high school. Nice video!

    Hey buddy really interesting take and a good first impression. I mirror a lot of what you say but I have to differ on the price of the watch and the value for money aspect. A lot of fans of Jody and his channel are from the UK...me of course being from Scotland. The biggie is the price after import duties and Tax. I had to stump up £29 for delivery and £65 for import / tax. That was quite a smack in the mouth. It's a good watch but value for money....hmm a lot of folks are saying exactly what I am. It's a very expensive San Martin. But of course that is just my tuppence. Great stuff as always.

    • @nextonthewrist
      @nextonthewrist  2 месяца назад +1

      Hey mate lovely to hear from you as always. You know it's definitely a common counter point I guess r.e. value for money, but as San Martin is a factory brand not a microbrand I expect the microbrand to have more cost (as you know I tried and failed with my own 😆) and it's far more expensive to launch a brand yourself than for the factory to design and manufacture for their own brand. With that in mind, the watch has to offer something more than a SM. For me and just my opinion is that the design cohesion on this and the attention to detail justifies the cost over a SM, but equally I totally understand why for others that won't be the case. As many say it's likely it comes out the same factory so again I understand it from both sides. I'm lucky with import duties at least was only £40 all in here to Calgary, so that also helps. Anyway I totally get it, I know you handle a lot of SM, what do you reckon is the closest competitor to this in terms of dimensions, spec and how it wears from SM? Could be a good future comparison 😎🙌

    • @johnswatchjoint
      @johnswatchjoint 2 месяца назад

      Hi buddy. There you go...you put why you think it is value for money in your reply which will resonate with some and that would have been good to include in your vid. I do understand that microbrands cost more but I have a lot of microbrands in my collection and this one has been the most expensive to import. I don't think anyone else asked nearly £30 for shipping which does make it hard to swallow...but I am sure many will have something to say come my review as it is only my opinion....you know how it goes haha. Great stuff buddy 😊

      The thing is, this is offering faceted indices and a handset that we could only dream of on a San Martin. I mean the SN0144x offers less on the details and costs over $300USD while being sold direct without the third party cost markup.

    I m a owner of the same watch. This is my opinion. Their are many things to make you reconsider the buy. My recommendation rather buy a San Martin.
    1.Adding shipping and taxes. The watch did cost me 600USD.
    2.On my watch the polishing had patches visible at certain angles.
    3.The costumer service is nothing close to what you get from San Martin. Practically something goes wrong you can just forget about your warranty.
    4.The brushing is very light. It fails to give the necessary contrast between the two type of finishing like you get in good quality watches or even in San Martin.
    5.the hour hands fail to line well with the indices

      Hi there, I appreciate your input on this topic. I personally do not have the issue with shipping and taxes, they are pretty low where I live but I appreciate that can vary wildly for others and can be a real turn off. I haven't encountered the other issues you mention on this watch - and I have also owned a lot of SMs (some with their own issues) over the years and can honestly say I prefer this watch for the reasons explained in my 'what is value to me'... But I have a lot of respect for SM watches though. I think since shipping so many watches the contact function on the Erebus website may be overwhelmed and hence the slower response times but I hope you're able to maybe have a resolution with them? Having had so many watches pass through I have also been on the frustrated customer side before...when seeming everyone else online is super happy with the same watch... so I know how it is from each side. It's always good to hear from all sides and understand good and bad. Thanks for the comments and watching the video 🙂👍

    Looks amazing, never considered that colour but do now. Only negatives I can see (not in hand btw) are a slightly thick and gappy (they all seem gappy to me so perhaps it's because it's no bevel at the clasp ends) clasp and +100 quid tax and shipping fee to UK. It opens up a few more options, especially UK microbrands with that bump up. If I lived in Australia it would be an absolute no brainer!

    2:05 - strange that you have 17,5 cm wrist and 4+1 and 3+1 links (plus on each side a half link which is connected to the clasp, so basically 2 half links on each side). Though it's true I start at micro 1/5 and go up to 3/5 when my wrist swells up. But even micro 5/5 gives me only 176 mm.
    Because I have a 16,5 cm wrist and I sized it the same. My first sizing was 5+3 links (first time I used only 3 links on 6 side) with usable micro 3/5 to 5/5. But it wasn't balanced, too much slack on 12 side and not enough on 6 side.

      I honestly haven't measured my wrist in years while, maybe it's changed 🫣... I normally always request 17.5 if companies will size before delivery and seem to get a good fit. My anecdotal experience: I know/work with a guy (He's Chinese) who owns runs his own factory in China, showed me that not all Chinese factories are the same. Not even close. Not all, but some of these factories take some pride in QC and putting out a better product for their consumers. Also, after an Item leaves, it may go its final country/destination for further QC or assembly, which can take the cost up a little, as those people have to get paid as well. I understand the sentiment against "Chinese crap", but they aren't all like that. Far too many are though, which gives them a bad name as a whole.

      Good suggestion - I've not tried a lot of vintage. I had a couple of bad experiences of having some badly running vintage watches that ended up uneconomical to repair and it put me off. The problem with auto-adjusting bracelets is that people who like a looser fit can't get the bracelet to be at the perfect size most of the time. Providing a manual adjustment system gives us looser fit preferers the ability to get the perfect size most of the time.

      I ordered one, it's great. I'd love to order a few other dial options. However, you're right, it should probably be a 300 dollar watch, maybe ever closer to 200, I'd take the compromise of a nh35 or even a vh31 quartz. The dial is the main appeal of the watch, everything else is like a San Martin/Cronos (higher quality Chinese made, but not necessarily better than those brands either). So in no way do I think buying another one is reasonable, especially since the prices have gone up 50 dollars more, and with Shipping it is going to be about 500, thats a no go.

    I bought one Origin 41 on launch and flipped it. The brushing and material quality overall was good and the bezel alignment was ok.
    My issue was with the bracelet and clasp (got stuck and I needed to disassemble to fix). The bracelet had sharp edges and pulled my arm hair like no other watch I ever owned. I have some Casios known to be hair pullers and never had any issue. With the Erebus was unbeareable and it was the main reason I sold it. I consider this underdevelopment of your project or, in other words, releasing the product unfinished.
    I also think their design lacks identity and cohesion between the models. I was annoyed to discover that the watch is VERY similar to the RZE Endeavor and the Ascent looks like it was made by another company.

    All the Swiss watches are ridiculously overpriced, overrated and overvalued. For example, a tourbillon must be $600 to 800 within the price range at the best but they make it 100 times higher. With digital watches increasing and decreased popularity of high priced traditional timepieces, people are increasingly more in favor of micro brands of affordable prices for their accessories and it is a very satisfactory trend. This watch is Hot Chinese Garbage. On top of that, it's bland, uninspired, and hideous; much like the guy who owns the "company." Jody is NOT the nice guy you think he is. He made a rage bait video about BOLDR's Un-Dark Radium Girls tribute watch, totally shitting all over another microbrand (a much better brand than Erebus, btw). This caused BOLDR to release a clarification statement, and to finally stop selling the limited edition timepiece -- which was fully supported by relatives of actual Radium Girls, btw.
    Still, to this day, Jody has yet to release a statement of his own about the whole episode. He took down the video and never mentioned it again.
    I for one would never buy a watch from a brand whose owner acts like a vindictive 8th grade mean girl just to get likes - even if the watches were amazing, which these aren't, IMHO.
