As a 43yr old father of 4 who has spent the last 8yrs building his ride, I would just like to say that your honesty in regards to unnecessary upgrades is refreshing. It's our jobs as older stangers to nurture and guide the younger ones; and help them appreciate their accomplishments in the hobby and make sure they are not taken advantage of so as to keep the love going. Keep on brother, and I will keep watching.

🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻 Always remember, it’s your car. Do what you want to it. I see people on these Facebook pages get slammed because someone doesn’t like the way the person’s car is modified. Who cares? It’s that person’s car. If they like it, that’s all that matters. If you don’t like it, then don’t say sh*t about it. Unless it’s been LS swapped, then it’s fair game 🤣

New weatherstripping, a tune up, gaskets, door pins, LED lighting go a long way after buying a FoxBody. Those little fixes will be rewarding and make the car a lot more fun to have.

I think theres 3 things we can all agree on to help a new foxbody owner.
    1. Subframe connectors
    2. Gears
    3. Timing bump
Regardless of the direction you’re going with the car, those 3 things will guarantee you get the most bang for your buck.

Ok, here's the two cents from the old timer.
    1. The problem with Fox brakes are the fronts. They are 11 inch rotors on the later ones. The rear brakes actually are not responsible but for about 25% of the stopping of the car. One thing you missed in this video are the 4 lug rear options. I bought a rear Cobra kit (those are 4 lug on regular Cobra, 5 lug on R) which is real similar to the Turbo Coupe rears. I paid $100 for the whole kit lol and stored it for 10 years or so. Changed them just because I didn't like the look of drums in the back. If you can lock the brakes up on the car then a bigger rotor/better pads/etc. will not help you stop better in one panic stop. Where bigger brakes shine are if you are doing "spirited" driving or lapping a track-- the Fox stock brakes will fail on you after repeated stops.
    2. You can just put some good Hawk pads on the front, if you want good brakes on your fox for cheap (regular GT's had wimpy 11" rotors still!) then go 95 or 95 cobra setup and upgrade to those. You can track on the 95 Cobra R brakes up to about 400 hp.
    3. You are right, the rear axles at elevated power levels are going to be an issue. My rearend has one of those "repair bearings" from all my antics as a young testosterone filled maniac. Going to get a good housing and stuff it with 4 lug Moser 31 spline and motor on. I like my SR Replica wheels, I want the Weld RTS's but that is another $$$$$$$$$$$$$ story for later.

I've had my '89 LX 5 speed since 1993. I am the second owner! All I have done to mine is add a Hurst shifter, Dr. Gas X pipe, 2 chamber Flowmasters, 3.73 gears with extra clutch packs in the rear, and removed the air silencer. Such a blast to drive, she brings a smile to my face every time. Thanks to you and Caleb over at Foxcast, I finally got her running again by installing all new fuel tank and accessories. Nothing wrong with the foxbody platform as is. I've never had any need for suspension upgrades, brake upgrades, wheel upgrades. I just prefer the cars as they came. They stop fine, handle fine, drive fine. My son has daily driven a fox for years with some drag racing mixed in with nothing but a few tweaks for more HP. He wants to keep a totally stock outward appearance and I'm on board with that. 347 is in the near future.
Besides, I think it's all about how you put things in perspective. I daily drove a 56 nomad for years. Manual 4 wheel drum brakes, no power steering, a tank that handles like a school bus with a hot 327- 4 speed. I'm still alive. I jump in a little fox body and feel like I'm in a go kart :)

I know I have felt like giving up on my Fox Body dreams at times because all the good stuff gets so expensive. I had to make payments on my 82 GT for almost 2 years while the car sat in someone's back yard in the SoCal high Desert before I even picked it up. Great video.. Been building cars since I was 14 and now I am 39 ... I always want my suspension and brakes done first , Only reason is because I can out drive someone with more power if I can stop better and handle better. So for me the power is secondary to the handling and stopping ability ! Plus if I am getting crazy with my driving on back roads I love the idea of being able to stop the car just that much faster if need be! I switched over to a full SN95 setup and it really helped my fox and my ability to drive the car in situations I normally would not !

Went the drag race route up until 5yrs ago when I decided the spool and faceplated trans wasn't what I wanted anymore so the direction was changed. You need a plan for what you want not anyone else. I've ruined my enjoyment of a couple of cars due to too much clutch! The right wheels and cut 3/4 of a coil front & back to get the right stance. As far as first mods exhaust pulleys gear. Then heads (with valve springs) cam intake. Home porting will go a long way if you can get it done. Explorer parts and a B cam is my pick for budget. Top it off with a NOS kit and it will hold its own

Believe me I am not an elitest I bought my 1st fox in 1989, so im not a newb either. In 1993 the new Z 28 out braked the cobra 114 feet to 144 from 60 mph. To put that in perspective a modern mazda 3 equal the Z28. In the way back machine 5 lug was adout pretty rims . Today if u plan on modifying a fox to be fast , u need better brakes minimum. If you plan on cruising country roads have at it. Im a big fan of the channel. With time and effort a fox can be competative in more than just speed. I do everything on a budget , and despise the people that will put u down for not being coyote swapped with a t-56. Putting a turbo 347 stroker in a fox with stock brakes on the street and driving in " Mexico" is foolish to do . Telling people its ok is worse. This is not a put down enjoy your stock car with stock brakes.

I was just telling my son the other day to stop worrying with all the upgrades and just enjoy the car. I run a similar setup to the calypso clone. The car made silly power and I felt the need to tear it all down. Now I'm the guy with no car to drive. These are really fun cars exactly the way they were produced. Slap a set of gears in them, some flowmasters, and get all the smiles per gallon!

This is a great video with great advice. I have built 7 fox body's and have experienced all the things that you mentioned. You don't have to any of the expensive mods to enjoy these cars. These are best 7/8 complete cars ever built (the last 1/8 is up to you). Buy the best car car that you can and then spend what you need to get you car running right or repair any damage. These cars are 28 to 42 years old. They are going to need some basic repairs and replacement of component before modifying them.

If there was a “best” setup, everyone would it and there’d be nothing special about them. Honestly, you see a lot of people like this in the car community. It’s 99.5% people who have nothing even close to the ride they’re criticizing. Never recommend something you can’t afford! Great video, love the environment you’re promoting around here!!

I agree with you! We need to respect the way everyone wants to upgrade THEIR car. Being decent to each other and help each other, specially during these crazy times.

I really enjoyed this video. I picked up a 1993 foxbody notchback about 4 to 5 months ago. It’s a 4 cylinder car. Which we are swapping it over to a V8. But I want to make it right. Been looking for a 5.0 motor kinda hard in my area. But I promised my boys I’ll get this car done sooner or later. Which I know I got a lot of time! The car is reef blue right now. Which I really like the way the Arctic fox looks! Kinda conflicted on what to do there! I wish some guys like you lived around here I’d love to get y’all’s advice!

My advice as a Foxbody owner is if you get a Fox for $3500 and you got a little extra to spend you should go through the car and get it mechanically sound first before you start putting all kinds of power down fluid and filter changes and plugs and wire cap and rotor all the not cool stuff and drive it for a bit. Then you can make the decision on what upgrades to do.

Amen brother! My fox makes 330hp/425tq at the wheels with an old school BBK instacharger, GT40X heads and Cobra intake. Stock cam, 30lb inj. And 255lph pump. Runs 12.0 at 114mph. 55K miles, stock original clutch, T5, rear, and factory brake pads and shoes! I've had this setup for 15 years. I don't beat the piss out of it, but I have fun and haven't broken anything, ever. Stock suspension as well except for Bilstein shocks and struts. These cars can take a lot with stock parts as long as you treat em right.

@@BREW2LFOXBODY Hello Sir, I have been watching your videos now for quite some time now. I dont trust anyone with my 93 LX Fox body. I have had this car since 1997. I have wanted to get this car repainted for some time now. I truly trust your expertise and your work. Could you please paint my baby. This car is great shape for a 93. I know that you dont do outside work. But this one time could you make an exception. I would be glad to send you some good pictures of my car. This car has never slept outside since I had it. I do all of my work except painting like you do Sir. Please advise me.

I didn't upgrade my brakes and switch to 5 lugs until I needed to replace like everything - brakes, suspension, shocks, etc. It was not a lot more to put on a complete Bullitt suspension, brakes and wheels at that time. It was 13+ yrs old and had 200k miles so it was time. So I bought it piece by piece over time and saved a lot of money. Otherwise I'd probably still have 4 lugs! But the wheel selection is much better with the sn95 setup.

  • @Agueart

I feel this, your cars look nicer than mine and I'm 20 grand into a build that has been a consistent money pit and aggravation. If I didn't already drive the car for 10 years before I started it I'd be even more pissed.

Ha! My first coupe was a 1500 beater.... put a cold air on it, exhaust, and sprayed the dog shit out of it for 3 years! Now I’m older and have more cash flow so I do have a nice coupe with a high dollar paint job and a killer engine set up. Still got 4 lugs... still have stock brakes... still running a ram clutch in my tko 500 and loving it. Best thing about these cars is doing wtf you want to do with them!!

  • @drewmacvane2308

I can’t agree more. A lot of mods are situation dependent.. however, like you said. Upgrades are good. They’re also expensive. I have one question though. How come you never talk about SFC’s, rear lower control arms, or (less important, IMO) torque box reinforcements? Ibelieve the common consensus is that these mods are generally a good idea if you start adding power. Or even drive spirited at stock power levels.

  • @benji408
    @benji408 4 года назад +2

This is so true, I prefer to have a 400-500hp engine with stock brakes than an awesome brakes/suspension with 250hp any day..... I had a 93 coupe with a 434 stroker on spray , high 8second 1/4 car, with stock 4 lugs. No big deal, pass the traps around 150mph and no issues stopping. Maybe if you go autocross racing its different, but for the average Joe just trying to have a fun street /strip car, brakes are overacted. Of course we talking about 4 lugs brakes in 100% condition. not a 100k brakes never gone true.
