It's finally here - the last instalment of our Gotei 13 series! A huge thanks to everyone who tuned in each month - now we need to think of what series to do next... anyway, who is your favourite character from the 13th Division and what's your favourite 13th Division moment?
Rukia not being a captain for ten years makes sense if you remember Byakuya saying to Renji that after obtaining Bankai, you need around ten years to master it so maybe Rukia had the captain offer but chose to wait out the ten years so she can master her Bankai.
@@loganhayse8771 This is my preference. With everyone else, I think there's no reason why they can't get some focus and action. But with Ukitake, I think Kubo might still want him to be kind of an unknown with Mimihagi as his only TYBW moment so he finally gets his due in Hell.
Man I loved Ukitake. He was kind, cheerful, smart, virtuous and yet an enigma. A true embodiment of what a captain should be. Hopefully we get to see him more in some form so that people can appreciate him more.
Seems like at one point Kubo forgot that Rukia is supposed to be in 13 squad. The way she constantly hanging around Renji and Byakuya, rushing for the latter's rescue while leaving her own position unguarded and never even interacting with her captain (who took a good care of her by the way) makes her current position as a captain feel pretty undeserved. Hell, Kiyone and Sentaro were the ones next to Ukitake when he sacrificed himself, while Rukia was just one of the crowd. Like, what was the the last time she interacted with Ukitake? In Kaien-related flashback?
To be fair she was always disconnected. She always had the strengh to be vice captain but got pulled out of that cuz byakuya used his connections. After that she likely got the job with renji to look after ichigo. + to many captains either died or deserted in the story in a very short time for shinigami. I guess they just couldn’t all keep up or didn’t want to anymore. So they took their time at the end to slowly build everything up again.
There was a scene in the manga, a tiny chapter that plays before Rukia goes to Karakura the first time, and Ukitake talks to her in a very friendly way, he also knows about her "true abilities" and he also was ready to save Rukia from her execution, and that even before the whole Aizen thing. I think they had a connection, but sadly more offscreeb
Kubo presented Ukitaké & Kyoraku as a pair, equally powerful and ancient, both the surrogate "sons" of Yama-jii. It seems at some point after Aizen's defection, Kubo really decided to favor Kyoraku, and telling his story. It feels like he just lost interest in Ukitaké, which is a shame, as his character, he has so much storytelling and back-story potential.
Yeah I'm hoping they expand on. Ukitake in the Anime. Even though Shunsui is my favorite Captain, I always liked Ukitake and considered them like brothers. There's so much I want to know about him as well beyond what we know.
Instead of Ukitake just sitting there while Mimihagi does it's thing , it'd be cool if Ukitake got warped up there and essentially had to fight Ywhach and defend Mimihagi while it stabilizes the worlds. He'd have to lose but it would be a nice final battle for him.
Ukitake has honestly been my favorite captain since the beginning. He's the epitome of a true/truly good leader. He's kind and powerful. He's also gentle but exceptionally dangerous. He understands a part of being a Shinigami that most of them don't. That being the human side. That is why Rukia seems to be one of the most mature and well-rounded characters in the series. Rukia is also easily in my top ten.
With the general attitude of the 13th and how welcoming (to a degree) Jushiro was to Ichigo when giving him the Combat pass, it wouldn't shock me if the 13th's function was diplomacy and Rukongai outreach/relations.
How I wish Ukitake had a legitimate fight before leading his ultimate fafe. He's wasted. A captain with all the feats and canon achievements but lacks any screen time just because...
I am really looking forward to seeing Ukitake in the Hell arc. From what we saw in the first chapter, it seems Kubo is planning to have him play a major role in that arc, and I think that is a very smart decision. The fact that he was the last of the original set set of Captains we were introduced to, it is quite fitting that he would play a major role in what is likely the true final arc of the story. Also, I would much rather see a Hell version of Ukitake that is no longer crippled by his illness, having a confrontation with either Shunsui, Ginjo or Rukia, than seeing him fight a random Sternritter. Any of those fights would have a lot more weight and emotion behind them, which I feel some of the best written fights in the series tend to have.
Considering Ukitake devised the Substitute Soul Reaper badge to monitor Ginjo and Ichigo, it would be surprising if he had a secret dark side just as Kyoraku does.
From what I read somewhere, he's not actually responsible for the surveillance bit. It was added without his knowledge by the head of one of the major noble houses...
They are certainly the down home and humble division, definitely one I'd join if presented with the opportunity. Their values of comradary and friendship is excellent and their bravery well worth admiring. The fact that they are Karakura Town's official defense sharing that with Ichigo and friends sure makes them the 'pals division' that goes all out for the good.
It would be interesting to me if the first Captain of the Thirteenth did turn out to be a wise and kind man, at least among the original Captains. Sort of subverting the expectations of his own appearance and laying the foundations for the way the Thirteenth is today. Perhaps he puts up a brutal facade and plays up the initial impression of creepiness in battle, but is more openly kindhearted with his people, or actively fostered the growth of the people in his division even if it was difficult for him to come across as genuinely helpful.
I think that works p well, considering that Sakahone looks like a Sokushinbutsu (Buddhist mummy) and has a name that connects him to the area where Mimihagi was enshrined
You need to master bankai, 10 years after obtaining it, before you can be promoted. You can tell her bankai wasn't mastered. She could Attack once with it.

@@CaptainKotetsu not officially, not yet at least. but fans have translated it online. it's primarily about Rukia & Renji's wedding but there was a lil part where Kiyone was chatting with Isane in their squad 4 barracks & both reminisced on Unohana & Ukitake. they took the losses hard respectively & it's primarily why Kiyone is in squad 4 now

I would love a series that goes into depth with of all the races like shinigami, souls, fullbring, hollows, arrancar, vizard, Quincy. A series that goes into depth of all the abilities of said races like Kido, shunpo, sonido, blut, ashwalen, cero, etc
Well like you said the only reason she was unseeted was because of bakuya, maybe she was already the third strongest shinigami in the 13th devision back then.
Ukitake is potrayed equally strong as Kyoraku, they are equal, he is one of three captains along with Kyoraku and Unohana that ever witnessed Yamamoto's Zanka No Tachi as Hirako Shinji said, he himself never see Yamamoto's bankai..Ukitake also knew so well of Kyoraku's bankai abilities as a hint that he must be fight along/play along with Kyoraku's bankai either in the fight or for training..
I feel as though I would be part of the 13th division if I had to pick one. That said, I would be that guy that is always spoken of as seeming like I should be part of the 12th division. The reason being pure viciousness in battle and overall insane battle prowess.
Honestly Rukia's promotion to Captain being so long after the end of the Quincy war kinda makes sense to me. Ten years is the time period that is accepted by the soul reapers for one to master their Bankai. Rukia's first use of it she is quite powerful, however it can kill her just as easily as it can kill her enemies. Knowing that just achieving Bankai is not the same as mastering Bankai it is safe to say that there is an additional clause to being promoted to Captain: You must have used and grown with your Bankai for 10+ years at least. This at least explains why there are no immediate promotions to Captain even after the defection of Aizen, Tosen, and Gin. Their Vice Captains don't have their Bankai by that point in time, and no one else in the Soul Society has a mastered Bankai to step up. Hinamori, Kira, and Hisagi do not have their Bankai at the time their captains defected and it is not until later that Hisagi has gained his at some point around the TYBW. But before that he hadn't had it long enough to be promoted so Kensei was placed back in charge of the squad. So yeah, ten years just makes sense to me and explains the immediate issue of vacancies in the Captains.
Squad 13 oversees The Human World, they also observe the levels in Karakuratown of Reiatsu and kill the Hollows as well as send souls on post death, observe Ichigo and the Various Seinkaimon in Karakuratown. Most are well trained in Hollow Extermination and kido to be in the 13th squad. One of the best trained
The reason why Rukia took so long to become a captain is for 2 reasons N1 - usually you need around 10y to completly master bankai as stated by byakuya in SS N2 - in the novel We Do Know Always Love You Kyoraku gives her the Captain clock of Kaen as a weeding present as asks her to officially become the Captain but she refuses stating that she didn’t feel yet she was ready It was her decision to take so long to become a captain cause she only did it when she was sure she was ready for it
One more thing about the new 13th Division insignia, it looks like a rabbit when viewed from above. Rukia always used rabbits to represent the good guys in her childish drawings when trying to explain things to Ichigo.
Hell Arc can will be a peak Arc. Because Kubo can fix his mistakes. He can Show us Previous Kenpachi’s,First Gotei and Squad 0 and Ukitake’s true strenght. Thanks for complete this serie.
I think it would be an interesting video series to explore how concepts are different from the introduction chapter to the final chapter. Like The difference between ehat a soul reaper is in chapter 1 versus chapter 600.
This was a great review. Your thoughts on it was great. Rukia is one of my favorite chacters. She can be a brut, she can caring and consoling, She is strong, even though at some points she is shown as weak. And she is loyal. She is one of the most well rounded characters in bleach and it was really nice to see here grow.
I've always thought that the divisions start the most removed from humanity and as you go down you get to the closest to humanity The assassination squad is number 2 ruthless killers Healers number for performing effectively magical healing Then if you start to get to the end you get things that humanity does war technology and caring
Noticed that too. It's interesting that Yoruichi despite being an assassin princess, did lead Squad 2 with an element of casual humanity nevertheless. She did develop banter with her underlings and truly cared for their wellbeing. Then Soifon threw all that into the trash, ironically compromising their fight ability due to the extreme tension and harsh discipline she exercised. Then again killers will be killers.
Rukia had been really busy in that 10 years, like tying knot with Renji (as depicted in "Bleach: WE DO knot ALWAYS LOVE YOU"), and giving birth to and raising a kid.
My favorite scene when the captains are notified that Rukia and Renji are missing is the head captain's frustration; saying something amounting to "Those jerks.."
an oddly useless Division no Vice, a half dead Captain nobody is impressive in the division until Rukia and we do nothing with Jushiro until hes used as a doll hes another one I liked and they just refused to use I liked Kaien too, so of course he had to die
Rukia is more of the representative of the entire shinigamis. She being so much entangled with 5th & 6th & 10th division only solidify that in our mind. She being from 13th division is more of a foot note. (at lest in my mind) (As she is now the captain of 13th division that perception may change as hell arc progresses.)

Off topic question, I need answers How did Yhwach not foresee himself under complete hypnosis by Aizen’s Kyoka Suigetsu if he can see the future Except that The Almighty would have shown Yhwach that Aizen was going to use Kyouka Suigetsu BEFORE he actually uses it, meaning at a point where it IS NOT INTERFERING with Yhwach's sight. Yet somehow he falls for it anyway? Yhwach was seemingly aware that he was under the hypnosis in chapter 683 when he guessed that Renji was the one that was blown away by his first strike, and it was ichigo who arm he tore off by the attack. If he was seemingly aware why didn’t he just deactivate the effects then. In chapter 684 it’s shown he deactivated it when he got back up after getting slashed by Ichigo. Why did he wait so soon to deactivate the effects? So if Yhwach was to try to forsee the future that Aizen would hypnotize him later on, when he was in the castle not in the presence of Kyoka Suigetsu why didn’t he attempt to do so since Aizen wasn’t there at that moment? It was just Ichigo and him and Orihime there only at the time? There’s no way he would just forget he can forsee the future all of a sudden. This I why I say this is a plot hole, he could’ve forsee the future to see himself being affected by the hypnosis since he wasn’t within Aizen’s range at the time.
Yhwach got put under KS when he first went to see Aizen which was before he had the full power of The Almighty that he got after he absorbed the Soul King. He only had two eyes so his ability to see the future seems much more limited. It is possible that he couldn't see all the way past the second invasion (to the end of the series) in this state. Therefore he didn't know he got put under KS. In the final battle Yhwach is unable to see past KS because it is affrectin him in every alternative time line he is looking at with The Almighty. Which just shows how broken KS is in the hands of Aizen.
@@Dragonpuncher123 I know that once Aizen reveals his shikai the first time to anybody they are vulnerable to Kyoka Suigetsu forever when Aizen is near them, just like the Vizords for example. What Im saying is why didn’t Yhwach forsee that Aizen would release his kyoka suigetsu within the area he was going to meet him before entering through the portal after beating ichigo? We know that In order for the hypnosis to work someone has to be within Aizen’s presence. Before going through the portal in chapter 683 he wasn’t near Aizen for the hypnosis to work on him so why didn’t he attempt to foresee the future that Aizen would use Kyoka Suigetsu when he was going to meet him? This is literally a plot hole in which Kubo made it to where Yhwach didn’t attempt to use his abilities to the fullest. Same goes for how he didn’t see the arrow coming, he supposedly didn’t have his almighty ability activated and completely disregarded anything that might come and kill him in this case was Uryu?

He litterally has a random dude follow Shinji around for weeks and makes him look like Aizen, while the real one goes around and does what he wants in secret. The body that Unohana does an autopsy on is also under KS and stays that way for the whole arc no matter where Aizen is until he releases it himself.

So why would he, if he could’ve, used Kyoka Suigetsu when Yhwach wasn’t in the area that he was in? In chapter 682 once Yhwach comes out the portal to see Aizen he says “What a surprise I didn’t expect to see you again in the soul society”. Not only that but in chapter 684 after Ichigo sliced Yhwach in half Aizen said that he released Kyoka Suigetsu in the area he was at before Yhwach arrived there. He never said anything about using Kyoka Suigetsu when Yhwach wasn’t even at his area. Which means that he couldn’t have used his hypnosis on Yhwach unless he was in his presence
@@fathergucci9588 my brother in christ they have already told you. Yhwach fell under KS when Yhwach went to see Aizen during the first invasion. The only reason KS "de-activated" was due to Yhwach effectively KOing Aizen when he reformed around Aizen after being KOd by Ichigo. KS remains active regardless of where the target is. If it's easier for you to understand consider the release of KS as a mark, everyone who has beeen marked are under the influence of KS, due to Mayuri's restraints Aizen can only exert his reiatsu relatively close to himself, that would be the area where KS is in effect. Yhwach was already marked so when he entered the area he was already under the effects of KS.
Rukia doesn't "come from nothing". One of the 4 Noble Houses. Her brother is a Captain. To see her development is awesome, to be sure. Her perspective is vital to the story
It's kinda funny how the least focused and developed chaptain are assasin doing stuff in the shadows and one of the oldiest thats extremly sick it's at least a reason if nothing for the lack od screen time
How about the next months you do other organization. Example. Feb could be Urahara shop since it’s tech a candy store. Then March you can do Xcution. April do the royal family’s etc until you get to July where you can you do the Wandenreich for the premier of part two of the anime :)
23:09 in all likelihood, Jushiro had access to it through the Shibas. The Shiba and Shihoin clans are close, and the fact that Kaien and Miyako were part of his squad gave him connections to the Shibas, and in turn, the Shihoins. By this point of course, Jushiro is aware that Yoruichi is assisting Ichigo, and Yushiro is the current clan head. Jushiro, using said connections, could request Yushiro to use the shield to assist his sister, and he’d get permission to unlock the seal on the shield, and thus, what we see on Sokyoku Hill. Likewise, the Shihoin clan seems to protect ancient artifacts. If you consider the fact that the Sokyoku, which is intended only to be used for executions, was mishandled as a weapon against the soul society, then the shield was probably created to counter it. Though I don’t expect it to be able to kill most captains fighting against it, it’s still got plenty of power, and thus needs something truly capable of destroying it. Better to have a guarantee than to worry about the competency of future officers’ strengths against it. Of course, this is just my speculation
Assuming Kyoraku and Ukitake don't get much stronger if at all between the soul society arc and the end of the tybw arc, do you think @mrtommo2304 that Kyoraku and Ukitake going all out could have beaten yama?
I thought frail, looking like a sick guy, and be expected to die the picture of thirthteen division if we look the first captain thirteen divison. Now i can't wait the old guy actually just ordinary loving grandpa.
Ukitake the most useless Captain in the entire Bleach universe. Call himself a captain but no Bankai, and only showed us a tiny bit of his shikai. Never defeated a formidable foe in his life so Im really glad he's dead and replaced with someone else.
When old man hams told Ukitake to stay in the SS cause he’d be the last line of defense against whatever was killing soul reapers during turn back the pendulum, I believe this hunter at what his bankai is/does. Think of the former Zaraki who had the shark fang bankai he could only use once every 6 months and Shinjis unseen bankai or Kyoraku’s. Everything within the space once activated that is seen as an enemy to the SS is forced out of it like a barrier or bubble & any attacks thrown at it are thrown back

Kiyone and Sentaro are easily the most underused and underdeveloped soul reapers in the history of Bleach. Their only defining trait is arguing over who loves Ukitake most.

Ukitake is potrayed equally strong as Kyoraku, they are equal, he is one of three captains along with Kyoraku and Unohana that ever witnessed Yamamoto's Zanka No Tachi as Hirako Shinji said, he himself never see Yamamoto's bankai..Ukitake also knew so well of Kyoraku's bankai abilities as a hint that he must be fight along/play along with Kyoraku's bankai either in the fight or for training..

I feel as though I would be part of the 13th division if I had to pick one. That said, I would be that guy that is always spoken of as seeming like I should be part of the 12th division. The reason being pure viciousness in battle and overall insane battle prowess.

Honestly Rukia's promotion to Captain being so long after the end of the Quincy war kinda makes sense to me. Ten years is the time period that is accepted by the soul reapers for one to master their Bankai. Rukia's first use of it she is quite powerful, however it can kill her just as easily as it can kill her enemies. Knowing that just achieving Bankai is not the same as mastering Bankai it is safe to say that there is an additional clause to being promoted to Captain: You must have used and grown with your Bankai for 10+ years at least.
This at least explains why there are no immediate promotions to Captain even after the defection of Aizen, Tosen, and Gin. Their Vice Captains don't have their Bankai by that point in time, and no one else in the Soul Society has a mastered Bankai to step up. Hinamori, Kira, and Hisagi do not have their Bankai at the time their captains defected and it is not until later that Hisagi has gained his at some point around the TYBW. But before that he hadn't had it long enough to be promoted so Kensei was placed back in charge of the squad. So yeah, ten years just makes sense to me and explains the immediate issue of vacancies in the Captains.

Most are well trained in Hollow Extermination and kido to be in the 13th squad. One of the best trained

The reason why Rukia took so long to become a captain is for 2 reasons
N1 - usually you need around 10y to completly master bankai as stated by byakuya in SS
N2 - in the novel We Do Know Always Love You Kyoraku gives her the Captain clock of Kaen as a weeding present as asks her to officially become the Captain but she refuses stating that she didn’t feel yet she was ready
It was her decision to take so long to become a captain cause she only did it when she was sure she was ready for it
It sure would be great if the Hell Arc happens and Ukitake gets to do something for once. I at least want to see a Bankai
One more thing about the new 13th Division insignia, it looks like a rabbit when viewed from above. Rukia always used rabbits to represent the good guys in her childish drawings when trying to explain things to Ichigo.

I was literally rewatching an old video. Then saw this one was posted. Can’t get enough of the content brother.
I think it would be an interesting video series to explore how concepts are different from the introduction chapter to the final chapter. Like The difference between ehat a soul reaper is in chapter 1 versus chapter 600.
This was a great review. Your thoughts on it was great. Rukia is one of my favorite chacters. She can be a brut, she can caring and consoling, She is strong, even though at some points she is shown as weak. And she is loyal. She is one of the most well rounded characters in bleach and it was really nice to see here grow.
I've always thought that the divisions start the most removed from humanity and as you go down you get to the closest to humanity
The assassination squad is number 2 ruthless killers
Healers number for performing effectively magical healing
Then if you start to get to the end you get things that humanity does war technology and caring
Noticed that too. It's interesting that Yoruichi despite being an assassin princess, did lead Squad 2 with an element of casual humanity nevertheless. She did develop banter with her underlings and truly cared for their wellbeing. Then Soifon threw all that into the trash, ironically compromising their fight ability due to the extreme tension and harsh discipline she exercised. Then again killers will be killers.
Rukia had been really busy in that 10 years, like tying knot with Renji (as depicted in "Bleach: WE DO knot ALWAYS LOVE YOU"), and giving birth to and raising a kid.
Potential idea for a new series could be a break down of each Espada rank including fraccion and Privaron Espada
My favorite scene when the captains are notified that Rukia and Renji are missing is the head captain's frustration; saying something amounting to "Those jerks.."

How did Yhwach not foresee himself under complete hypnosis by Aizen’s Kyoka Suigetsu if he can see the future
Except that The Almighty would have shown Yhwach that Aizen was going to use Kyouka Suigetsu BEFORE he actually uses it, meaning at a point where it IS NOT INTERFERING with Yhwach's sight. Yet somehow he falls for it anyway?
Yhwach was seemingly aware that he was under the hypnosis in chapter 683 when he guessed that Renji was the one that was blown away by his first strike, and it was ichigo who arm he tore off by the attack. If he was seemingly aware why didn’t he just deactivate the effects then. In chapter 684 it’s shown he deactivated it when he got back up after getting slashed by Ichigo. Why did he wait so soon to deactivate the effects?
So if Yhwach was to try to forsee the future that Aizen would hypnotize him later on, when he was in the castle not in the presence of Kyoka Suigetsu why didn’t he attempt to do so since Aizen wasn’t there at that moment? It was just Ichigo and him and Orihime there only at the time? There’s no way he would just forget he can forsee the future all of a sudden. This I why I say this is a plot hole, he could’ve forsee the future to see himself being affected by the hypnosis since he wasn’t within Aizen’s range at the time.
Yhwach got put under KS when he first went to see Aizen which was before he had the full power of The Almighty that he got after he absorbed the Soul King. He only had two eyes so his ability to see the future seems much more limited. It is possible that he couldn't see all the way past the second invasion (to the end of the series) in this state. Therefore he didn't know he got put under KS.
In the final battle Yhwach is unable to see past KS because it is affrectin him in every alternative time line he is looking at with The Almighty. Which just shows how broken KS is in the hands of Aizen.
@@Dragonpuncher123 I know that once Aizen reveals his shikai the first time to anybody they are vulnerable to Kyoka Suigetsu forever when Aizen is near them, just like the Vizords for example.
What Im saying is why didn’t Yhwach forsee that Aizen would release his kyoka suigetsu within the area he was going to meet him before entering through the portal after beating ichigo? We know that In order for the hypnosis to work someone has to be within Aizen’s presence. Before going through the portal in chapter 683 he wasn’t near Aizen for the hypnosis to work on him so why didn’t he attempt to foresee the future that Aizen would use Kyoka Suigetsu when he was going to meet him?
This is literally a plot hole in which Kubo made it to where Yhwach didn’t attempt to use his abilities to the fullest. Same goes for how he didn’t see the arrow coming, he supposedly didn’t have his almighty ability activated and completely disregarded anything that might come and kill him in this case was Uryu?

He litterally has a random dude follow Shinji around for weeks and makes him look like Aizen, while the real one goes around and does what he wants in secret. The body that Unohana does an autopsy on is also under KS and stays that way for the whole arc no matter where Aizen is until he releases it himself.

Also Aizen stated that he never knew Yhwach was still within the soul society also meaning that he never would’ve thought Yhwach would see him again. So why would he, if he could’ve, used Kyoka Suigetsu when Yhwach wasn’t in the area that he was in? In chapter 682 once Yhwach comes out the portal to see Aizen he says “What a surprise I didn’t expect to see you again in the soul society”.
Not only that but in chapter 684 after Ichigo sliced Yhwach in half Aizen said that he released Kyoka Suigetsu in the area he was at before Yhwach arrived there. He never said anything about using Kyoka Suigetsu when Yhwach wasn’t even at his area. Which means that he couldn’t have used his hypnosis on Yhwach unless he was in his presence
@@fathergucci9588 my brother in christ they have already told you. Yhwach fell under KS when Yhwach went to see Aizen during the first invasion. The only reason KS "de-activated" was due to Yhwach effectively KOing Aizen when he reformed around Aizen after being KOd by Ichigo.
KS remains active regardless of where the target is.
If it's easier for you to understand consider the release of KS as a mark, everyone who has beeen marked are under the influence of KS, due to Mayuri's restraints Aizen can only exert his reiatsu relatively close to himself, that would be the area where KS is in effect.
Yhwach was already marked so when he entered the area he was already under the effects of KS.

The Shiba and Shihoin clans are close, and the fact that Kaien and Miyako were part of his squad gave him connections to the Shibas, and in turn, the Shihoins. By this point of course, Jushiro is aware that Yoruichi is assisting Ichigo, and Yushiro is the current clan head. Jushiro, using said connections, could request Yushiro to use the shield to assist his sister, and he’d get permission to unlock the seal on the shield, and thus, what we see on Sokyoku Hill. Likewise, the Shihoin clan seems to protect ancient artifacts. If you consider the fact that the Sokyoku, which is intended only to be used for executions, was mishandled as a weapon against the soul society, then the shield was probably created to counter it. Though I don’t expect it to be able to kill most captains fighting against it, it’s still got plenty of power, and thus needs something truly capable of destroying it. Better to have a guarantee than to worry about the competency of future officers’ strengths against it. Of course, this is just my speculation

When old man hams told Ukitake to stay in the SS cause he’d be the last line of defense against whatever was killing soul reapers during turn back the pendulum, I believe this hunter at what his bankai is/does. Think of the former Zaraki who had the shark fang bankai he could only use once every 6 months and Shinjis unseen bankai or Kyoraku’s. Everything within the space once activated that is seen as an enemy to the SS is forced out of it like a barrier or bubble & any attacks thrown at it are thrown back
