An employee should show the same amount of loyalty that employers do, which is zero. You would have had no problem "abandoning" him in the middle of nowhere if you decided you wanted to get rid of him for the slightest reason.

For real. I worked for a company where I saw an owner avoid this exact situation.
Our trucks require CDL and the driver I'm referring to had been with them for 6+ years and had a pretty good track record.
Driver made a mistake on a job-site and caused about $1000 in damage.
I was sitting in the office waiting for dispatch to set me up with a load when the owners personal phone rang.
He answers it and it's the driver. Driver told him what happened, the owner told him they'd talk about it when he got back and to just finish out his run.
(Tone of voice definitely made it seem like there wasn't a problem. $1000 in damage is nothing to this company, its basically a "shit happens" amount as long as it doesn't happen often.)
The owner hangs up the call, and pretty much immediately says "He's done".
In the course of a few minutes on the phone this guy had realized he can't drop the driver while hes mid-run a good distance from the yard, proceeded to make him feel like it was no big deal so he could milk him for another few hours of work finishing up and getting that truck back, but had already decided the guy was fired.
Had he fired him during the call, the truck would've been sitting about 60 miles from the shop on a job-site half loaded and they'd have to stop one of our other trucks to send another driver with the proper license to go retrieve it.

Dude has a super chill attitude, he knows the job sucks but he's willing to do it. It takes a special breed of driver to do these types of jobs. There's a bunch of stress, long hours, misunderstandings, misinformation etc. Expectation vs. Demand. End result is keep the customer happy and get the job done safely. I've driven rollback for quite a long time, pulled 20ft trailers, hauled 10+ motorcycles to Myrtle Beach SC during Black Bike week from Ohio through the Mountains of Virginia and along the Ohio River long boring drives stopping to check the load isn't shifting or a strap is loose. Staying entertained during amongst the darkness. Life and death choices that are made at Gas stations in regards to food. Flying J, Duke Dutches are my two preferred choices for on the go food. Duke sells bomb ass meatball subs, good for some indigestion and some wicked gas but delicious. I've always been the driver anytime the trip was over 50+ miles. I traveled as a driver for a landscape company to Indianapolis every year to do a lawn install for a campus that held events. I traveled with a company that installed reverse osmosis systems on banana ripening rooms huge 4 story roll back garage doors full of bananas and we're up top building the system to help the humidity. I enjoy the traveling wish I lived closer I'd send you my resume. Sorry I kinda rambled and jumped around.

So, the guy quit in the middle of a job - no going back on that. I wouldn't have a problem re-employing someone who gave notice properly, people leave for many reasons, and want to return for many more.
Some of the comments are amusing - I've known management fire people the day after giving them a pay rise. I've had workers just not bother turning up, repeatedly, and wonder why they got fired. known some really piss-poor workers who I'd have fired on the spot, for many reasons, but couldn't because they weren't under my management, just as I've known damn good, hardworking people who were fired because someone had it in for them.
I've been fired or, more correctly, agreed I wasn't a good match for the job - not a problem as I was already looking for alternative work and ready to resign. Oh, did get fired legit' once - major personality clash with a micro-managing fool - words were spoken and I left with a grin :-)

Why didn't you save on the tow and use your truck you drove there in to pull the other vehicle up on the trailer? Just would have needed to have someone steer the dead vehicle. Easy enough to push it off at the drop off point. Also if you use 4wd low when backing the 2nd truck on to the trailer you would have solved your slip situation and the low range would help keep you from overshooting.

Some years ago I was working as a public safety officer at a rather high scale gated community in northern Illinois I arrived at work one Sunday afternoon to find an old junk pickup truck belonging to a North central Wisconsin construction company parked behind our station which was located at the entrance to the community I asked our desk officer what the story on the truck was and was told he did not know as it was there when he came on duty I put the matter to the back of my mind and began my days patrol a short time later I was called to the station to meet with the property manager on arrival I was told to contact the owner of the truck and have it removed before the next day since the companies phone number was on the truck I called them and was told the truck was stolen and to contact the Waupaca county sheriff's department I did so and was informed that the truck had been parked at a work site at the county jail when it had been stolen by an escaping inmate who was facing drug and weapons charges I realized that this inmates last name was the same as one of our rookie officers and contacted the lake county Illinois sheriffs department and apprised them of the situation and had them contact the Wisconsin authorities for verification then I called my rookie officer to find out what the story was and if he knew where the escapee was he replied that he couldn't talk so I asked if he was under duress he said yes and the call was cut off I immediately called the Cook County Illinois sheriffs department where my officer resided and informed them that we had a hostage situation at my officers home they responded and after a short stand off arrested the subject when this offender fled he had come to Illinois and contacted his cousin (my officer) who knowing nothing about his arrest and subsequent escape invited him to come to his house for a visit up in his arrival at our station he went home with my officer leaving the truck behind as it was low on gas once at his cousins residence he had overpowered my officer and taken his weapon after which he took my officer and his wife hostage after the rescue he was returned to Wisconsin where he faced not only his original charges but federal charges of kidnapping unlawful restraint and interstate flight as well!

I think we have all wanted to do this to a bad boss. If I were you, I would reflect on your actions that could have led up to this driver abandoning truck and trailer like this. Most drivers would have the courtesy to bring back a truck if the boss was a good person.

Blame the victim? Bottom line all employments end. The right thing to do is at time of hiring both agree to the ending method. Spell it out. With cause and without cause terminations / quitting, define what is cause. Then it is easy to decide who did and who didn't honor the contract. Issue in this whole post is trying to decide who broke the unwritten cultural context contract. There are hard feelings when both parties think they know what it is but they both know it differently! When in doubt or to prevent doubt - write it out!

im surprised you have such good luck with your f250, I have a 2019 one and at 24000kms it had constant death wobble the dealer couldn't figure how to fix it and t 44kms then changed all the ball joint shims nd shimmy shock fixed till 85kms then I put a fancyexpencive shimmy shock in cause it tarted driving like a wheel barrel, its on its second set ofttimes needing its third set sonic just rolling 100kms doing the same thing as you im a ford guy but by far the worst truck iv had.

Why don't you invest in a set of mobile truck scales? It would pay for itself in about 1 season of "i think i should charge this guy extra because this thing is waaay heavier than this guy said it would be".
Police departments must be selling their old scales somewhere.....
