Ollie Babajide Tikare is a multidisciplinary artist working across photography, writing, music curation, DJing and radio.
His visual practice often engages with themes of identity, race, and community, yet he also explores the human form, street photography, and fashion with equal fervour. He regularly DJs across London and in 2019, fuelled by his interest in African art and music, as well as a fascination with early NYC Disco culture, he co-founded the London based radio show and club night, 'Don’t Touch My Fro!' alongside his friend Tolu. Serving as the creative force behind the project, he oversees everything from DJing and event organisation to conducting photoshoots that form the backdrop for the event's artwork. With a keen eye for emerging talent, he curates lineups that spotlight up-and-coming artists, while also making frequent radio appearances on stations such as Balamii, Refuge Worldwide, NTS, Rinse FM as well as the more recently established DTMF Radio.
Inspired by a recent trip to Lagos, this latest mix is a heartfelt homage to the vibrant musical landscape of Nigeria, Yorubaland and beyond. From Waka and Juju to Highlife, Rock and Reggae, the mix is a testament to the diversity and richness of Nigerian music.
“My uncle assured me that records were hard to find in Lagos aside from at the Jazzhole in Ikoyi. When I stumbled across a small shack in Lekki Market run by a guy called Chide, I could not believe my luck. Stacks upon stacks of originally pressed Nigerian musical gold. I made multiple visits and spent hours with him going through his collection. I think it was rare for him to get a buyer who was willing to buy so many and was more interested in the music not made by Fela. I want to thank Chide for keeping all of this music alive and spending so many hours with me, always giving me stuff to listen to. I will be back no doubt! I hope you all enjoy these sounds as much as I do"
