A4 paper has those weird dimensions (not a round number in either metric or imperial) because of its aspect ratio of √2, which allows cutting it in half and still retaining the same ratio.
A0 paper is defined to an area of 1 m², and each subsequent paper number (A1, A2, ...) is the previous paper halved. Therefore A4 paper has an area of 1/16 m², and a √2 ratio, which in no way produces round numbers for the two dimensions!
trabladorr, don't let a few decimals scare you off! There's an underlying elegance to that standard. Check out Numberphile's - the silver ratio video if you're interested :)
Talk about a nerd
It also has that weird dimensions because it's a metric ISO standard, meaning it's a sensible number in millimeters, and you get odd numbers in inches
Neerrd alert ☣️☣️☣️☣️☣️
It does not have rounded dimensions in any measurement system, because of the irrational √2 factor. A4 paper is defined to an area of 1/16th of 1,000,000 mm², or 62,500 mm². This gives it the dimensions of 297.301778751 mm * 210.224103814 mm, which are rounded for ease of use to 297 mm * 210 mm.
Not evryone has a 3d printer.
So I laser-cut plywood ones.

Let me whip out my Simultaneous 5 axis CNC machine, because I just learned no one has a laser cutter.
I usually print a photograph of an airplane using my office printer. And then I put it up on my cabin board. Thats it.
He said razor cut
I have a 3d printer by the way.
"A4 has really weird measurements.."
- Americans
Yeah because 21cm by 29.7cm makes perfect sense.
A5 is what I use
@@Kintayisme lmao
Seriously what a weird measurement
@@Waved_Saucer @Kintayisme
It's seems a bit arbitrary and to some extend it kinda is. The DIN paper size is based around the idea, that every format has the same ratio compared to the next smaller/ bigger one, which is (1 : 2), with the aspect ratio of width to length always being (1 : √2). The biggest format A0 has a surface area of 1m² and the smaller formats derive off of that.
So while the exact lengths are a bit impractical, the constant aspect ratio has proven to be incredibly useful for scanning and printing. As documents of different DIN sizes can be processed without having to distort or crop them.

Do you know what gauge of wire you need for this? Thanks!

This was really inspiring, thanks for the idea! I got this working today! I used the propel x01 that they have at wal mart, the one with the three blade props. I had to fiddle with it a lot, but for the air frame i tried the classic dart and a glider with mediocre success before settling on one called the nakamura lock. It is excellent and very stable. I cut out a piece of the plastic packaging that the drone came in to mount the electronics on instead of foam lol.
So yea this can be done pretty easily still, even if you can't find that exact model of micro drone anymore.
Thanks for your hilarious videos and the inspiration to fix my soldering iron and make something cool today 😎

Come on people!!! Letter size is the US standard it is 8.5"x11". A4 is the EU standard and it is based on a golden ratio sequence starting with A1 being 1 sq. meter and having the golden ratio as it's aspect ratio.
It's aspect ratio actually isn't the golden ration. It's the square root of two. It's done like this because this way if you fold it in half by the longer edge, than the aspect ratio remains constant.
I put my pants on
ring ring you just got another sub!
Very successful Peter these little paper aircraft fly well with those powerplants from the micro quads,a lot of fun for such a small outlay.

Is it really hard to say "that".
This quiet, elongated tutorial is certainly a change of pace from your normal videos, but I really enjoyed it! especially with you explaining every step I would feel very confident making one of these planes. Also thanks for demonstrating an easy to make non 3-d printed part version, some making channels seem to forget that materials other than 3-d printed plastic exist ;)
great video.
fyi, "A4" size paper is != "Letter" size paper
Different standards. same as imperial and metric system.
A4 is metric, and has a really neat way of scaling, due to its aspect ratio. Letter is the embarrassingly non-standard American 8.5" x 11" version.
I also dont get why he's surprise at the weird numbers, like you're measuring a metric object in imches of course it'll be weird
xeladoozo A4 paper doesn’t quite go neatly into decimal measurements either (although it nearly does). A1 size paper is defined as having an area of exactly 1m^3 and a ratio of 1:root2. This ratio means that when the paper is cut in half the new sheets will have the exact same aspect ratio as the original sheet.
@@newtoncraftmcTry looking up information on “ the golden Square”. All these paper sizes a1-a5 etc are based on it. The odd numbers are due to the fact that a true square does not actually appear square to the eye. To base the paper sizes on the true square would not therefore look good either. The Golden Square has one plane longer than the other side but gives the eye the apparent “true” square. All paper sizes are then based on The next size down from the largest A0 is half that of. AO and all subsequent sizes are half. Of their predecessor. All this predates the USA.
This is as I remember it!
@@kyo4o3d A paper doesn't have anything to do with the golden ratio
When soldering wire extensions, it is good practice to stagger the lengths. This way it is first, a bit more compact, and second will not short out even if insulation over the joints isn't used and a single piece of shrink tube can cover both connections to make a neat job.
By far, the cheapest, simple and good motorized paper plane I've ever seen on the web! Congrats!

A4 is not the same as 8.5x11. They are different standards
Easily confused because U.S. standard "letter size" paper is referred to as "A size".
I guess the 'A size' stands for ANSI A size, which is just size from american paper size series different from ISO 216 'A series'. We need more standards, right?
Just to add to the confusion. ISO 216 A series's dimensions verifies a simple property: if you cut the paper in half, say an A3, it becomes an A4, maintaining its aspect ratio. If you solve the equation L/W = W/(L/2) (math statement that ratios stay the same) you see that L and W are related by sqrt(2). Hence the weird measurements.
11x8.5 is pretty close to A4 though not exactly the same.
This is amazing. I'm really into flying quadcopters recreationally and a buddy of mine I met at the community college likes to fly planes. Gonna have to make this for him. Such a great ida!

Wow Peter, your new diy ultralight mk5 prototype looking kinda sweet
A true Rc Paper aeroplane. Nice work Peter.
Just curious... As far as energy efficiency, will the paper airplanes fly longer than just the drone as it comes from the factory?
I ask because of the idea that one is working off of typically observed 'planar lift' principles and the other is working like a helicopter or VTOL, and those, typically, consume more energy for time spent in flight.
You just made every kids and my dream come true
