I remember buying a Dreamcast for the Resident Evil Code Veronica console Exclusive! I got stuck on a plane save state and had no ammo so I couldn't fight the boss on plane. There is some VMU card out there with a death save for the game.
That was the part everyone warned me about! I was terrified of getting stuck there
I got some helpful advice for you for modern gaming. 1 & done. Beat the games on the easiest settings once, either beat them or quit them. Once you do that, toss in the garbage can & never play them ever again.

I used to replay modern games over & over until I got the most trophies or platinum them, Used to play games like Uncharted or God Of War (the original ones not this new version) on the hardest of difficulties etc.
At some point in my life later 30's in my 40's I got sick & tired of wasting time with these frustrating challenges & Hard video games just piss me off a whole lot more now. As a kid or younger adult games would frustrate me as well but I had a lot more patience to replay them, Master them whatever. Now I feel like if a game is too hard, I just quit them so I don't feel this anger towards them & I work a job that's really tiring both physically & Mentally & video games should be a release for Tension.
They shouldn't be here will make these games so hard and non gamer friendly.
@truthhurts6343 Yeah true. I now like my retro sega Genesis games that much more now. You realize that games are super long now & you just want to play maybe 30 min to 1 hour.
@tonyp9313 at least you can take breaks now. I don't mind longer games because I can stop and take a break whenever I want. On retro games, you have to block out hours just to get good enough to practice 😅
So basically you don’t want to play games you just want to beat them. I feel like this mentality is getting more and more common as microtransactions in single player games are taking off.
So, about Repentance: I can tell you why it happened the way it did. The game had never ACTUALLY been about rampaging with wild synergies every bloody run. No, seriously, it was never about that. That aspect was a side effect of terrible balance. There was an astonishing amount of content in it that was irrelevant (almost all items), or outright backwards (devil rooms having zero actual risk to them, among many other things), and so on, to the point where the player barely even had to pay attention to win. The Synergy happened EVERY FREAKING RUN (or almost every run), and you didnt need to take risks or make difficult decisions to get it to show up. There's a reason why players had win streaks of like 100+. The game had zero challenge up to this point. Very little skill was involved. But then suddenly, this shows up.
Just to give an example of what I mean: When Repentance came out and I was playing it the first few times, I got to the fight with Blue Baby, in the Chest. Got there, okay, time to do this boss... what? I died? What? Okay, let's do that again... what? I died AGAIN? I had a realization at this point: It wasnt anything wrong with the items that had killed me... no, it was that I had NO IDEA how to fight this boss. None. Not really. I couldnt even remember what its attack patterns were. I had hundreds of hours in the game at this point, I'd done all the achievements (before the expansion) and I had NO BLOODY CLUE how to fight this boss. Because I NEVER HAD. Every time I'd been at this boss, it wasnt actually a fight, it was me driving a bloody steamroller (gotten not because of skill, but because the game gave it to me every run). Someone else put it best, in the comments of a review for this expansion: "I think the steamrollers are having to come to terms with the fact that they're not actually very skilled players. Now they basically have to get better." Suddenly, I was confronted with the fact that I had never REALLY had to fight anything in the game.
And in watching others play the game, I realized it was the same for many of them: they'd die, over and over again, because it turns out suddenly that they didnt know how to actually FIGHT any of the enemies. And they never had. In something like Enter the Gungeon, you get murdered if you cant fight well, good items/synergies or not. Dodge or die. That's the NORM for this genre. But here? Didnt matter. The Synergy, given to you almost every run, did the winning for you.
All of that stuff is the reason behind the giant revamp. Edmund had talked about a lot of this. He knew some players would react badly to it, but that was fine, because the way the game had been up to now was never the intent in the first place. That's what Repentance was actually about: Bringing the game's balance in line with it's intended design. That and also adding Antibirth's content to the game, of course (which is where the alt-route thing comes from).
You dont need to min-max either, to win, with Repentance. Seriously, you dont. But you do gotta change your approach. The best advice I ever heard with this expansion is this: "Get outta your comfort zone". So many items are good now, there's almost no truly bad items left, but it takes experimenting and trying new things to find out how things can be useful. But that's a hard sell to many players, too entrenched in the old "meta", or for those not REALLY looking for a roguelike experience (AKA, high difficulty and tough decisions). So I do think it's understandable that some just bounced right off this.
For me, this expansion revitalized the game. I'd always considered Isaac my favorite game of all time... but it was super rare that I actually played it (past the point of doing the game's awful unlocks), because I need a challenge for a game to hold my attention. I loved the DESIGN, the mechanics, the characters, but the dead balance meant that I didnt have to engage with any of that. Just hit the win button, over and over again, and that had gotten old. All those things are fixed now.
I will say though, I agree with you on the secrets, though that's not just a Repentance thing. It had always been a problem from the very start. Remember trying to do the Level 4 Bandage Girl achievement, only for a certain OTHER horseman to show up every freaking time and ruin it through sheer RNG? uuuuugh. Isaac's unlock system had always been bad. The lack of item descriptions had also always been bad, I'm still baffled that it does not have that without mods. Every other game does it... Whoever made the "item descriptions" mod deserves a medal.
Sorry, I'm rambling a lot here. Game design is my special interest, and roguelikes/lites/whatever are the big focus for me. I could ramble about the genre all day, really. I really like your channel, by the way. Your commentary is good, and the overall concept is really good too. It's great to see a gaming channel with real variety in it, run by someone with real passion for it. Been a long time since I last hit the subscribe button on a gaming channel, but I'm gonna do it here.

It makes sense that Ed was upset with the current meta of Afterbirth, and he wanted to rebalance it to match what he wanted the game to be. Unfortunately, the game built its huge following on the back of the old unbalanced meta. I feel like Ed took something that was successful by accident, and decided to revamp it out of his own vanity. To me, it simply became less fun to play.

It woulda been nice for them to have it set as like an option of sorts, or another mode, whatever, like in the menu or something. So you could choose to have the new content + revamp, or new content but without the old stuff being touched. That might have been nice, to let everyone be able to decide what experience they want out of it. I wouldnt be surprised if someone has gone and made a mod that does that, at this point. Though of course that doesnt help console players.

What I always thought would make the game a lot better was if the item descriptions would be unlocked over time with the use of the item.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Shredder's revenge was so good. played through it with two of my buddies.

Blasphemous is my go to example of the possibilities with pixel art in games, it's such a a gorgeous (and disturbing) game. The sequel has a lot of QoL improvements but didn't resonant with me as much as the first game.
I'm excited to try the second game. I'm hoping I don't have the same issue as you, though 🤣
The problem I have with how the “balancing” done in Repentance materialised is it seems the dev has a *very* specific way he wants us to play, and anything outside of that got nerfed. Most extremely powerful items got downgraded to sometimes unplayable, but of course Mom’s Knife and Sacred Heart are untouched.
You nailed it! He straight up said he was angry at streamers winning every single time... and he wanted to take that away 🤣
It's like balancing your 9 year old football league around the NFL because you're mad the Chiefs keep winning the Super Bowl
@@RNGGamerYT this then worries me, because most streamers (at least the ones I follow) have been able to keep their streaks and keep winning. Of course, that’s to their credit, but could this mean we’re going to get a temper tantrum update that nerfs more stuff?
@Set666Abominae they keep their streaks up by becoming the 0.1% of gamers that dedicate hours to the game daily. They also avoid entire mechanics of the game, like taking pills.
I didn't know that about the X version of Code Veronica. I beat the Dreamcast version and even then I nearly got stuck on the Tyrant at the end of disc 1 and then the Steve chase took me dozens of attempts. I did manage it eventually though.
It's brutal! The dreamcast version is no pushover either, from what I hear. Congrats on actually finishing it

Don’t trust IGN for any reviews. I started Afro Samurai for the first time today. I checked out IGN’s old RUclips video review from 12-13 years ago when it launched.
Greg Miller shit all over it and complained that it was too hard and the camera is bad. He claimed he’s a professional video player/reviewer and the first boss took him over 45 minutes to beat which is too hard.
The first boss is a cake walk and basically a tutorial on how to block/parry. It was insanely easy and took maybe a little over 5 minutes 😂
Greg Miller always had issues and I remember a lot of his reviews were decisive. I mainly just use IGN for gaming news these days
The Amazing Spider-Man for the Gameboy was a game I only could get through by memorizing every level. My brother absolutely loved it. I couldn't stand it since I would just get hit and die.

I still have all 4 and occasionally play them. I had to start 4 all the way over because I was WAY too overpowered after a few rds. The Dark Realms in that game are so brutal yet fun.
Code Veronica was actually the first RE game I played. It definitely made an impression on me. The graphics at the time was jaw dropping. It was really tense, and the infamous incest twins pulling the legs of insects ... Jaysus. Creeped the hell out of me. Quaint by todays standards obviously, but when it came out it was spectacular.

@@RNGGamerYT It hasn't aged well. The overall design as you mentioned requires a LOT of foresight which kinda sucks. You should always be able to go into it blind. I have a lot of nostalgic love for it, but it IS VERY flawed. And the voice acting is really cheesy at times. In the best RE tradition of course. 😁
I remember that spider-man game it's one of the 1st spider-man games I played i think i beat all stages except for the dr.oct stage which could be the final stage, i don't remember but i remember i keep losing because spider-man just won't swing in his web 😅
Dr. Oct was the stage I got stuck on, too! I think there is one more stage after it... but I'll never know because I'm never going to play it again 🤣
I bought the ps2 version of Code Veronica X when it came out (yes I'm old too) and have never beaten it. I got stuck on the boss fight in the back of the plane and got so infuriated I ripped the disc out and threw it across the room. Haven't played it since. Now knowing the item b.s. with Chris it's probably a good thing I gave up because I can confidently say my ps2 would've been thrown through a window.
That whole boss fight is just on a stupid timer.... everyone in my chat had me prepping for it for the whole game. You basically have to find ALL of the ammo in the game and conserve it just for these fights .. so frustrating 🤣
I stopped caring about trophies and achievements, and my life is so much better for it.

That's a shame about what happened to The Binding of Isaac. I haven't yet played that one but I have been curious about it and I'll be sure to get the version you mentioned was the best when I get it. I agree with you on Resident Evil: Code Veronica X, it is a flawed game but it is also fun and worth playing for those who can handle the difficulty. It's great to see that you enjoyed Blasphemous, that's one of my favorite games of all time and I highly recommend playing Blasphemous 2 because that improves the gameplay considerably. Windjammers isn't a game I have played, but it seems I should play the original game first to see if I like it. That Spiderman game looks awful and there were some unfortunate stinkers on the Game Boy that are barely playable, I'm sorry you had to suffer through that ordeal. It seems like you have experienced quite the variety of good and bad games recently. 😆

A little related, one game ruined for me was "Halo: Reach". I got every achievement, adored the hell out of it. Then they released a DLC with new achievements. "You ate all the chips" made me despise that game. The month's... month's I put into that.. it turned a game I loved into a job I hated. Vowed after to never achievement hunt again.
"Aliens Vs Predator" on the other hand, was an absolute JOY to 100%. I can't not play that on "nightmare" mode now. It's a game that makes achievement hunting a fantastic experience.
And yes. Screw the "code Veronica" safe boxes
I realized how much achievement hunting has harmed so many gaming experiences... yet improved so many others...

@@RNGGamerYT oh I'm gonna look forward to that, it really can ruin a game. People say "just don't bother!" but when you love a game, you want to a hundred percent it. It's almost like a "love you" to the game. And then it ends in divorce.
That's why I love my Switch. No achievements whatsoever. Looks at me and says "you just wanna hang out?". Yeah I do 🙂
My favorite Playstation game was ruined for the opposite reason. When they released Jet Moto 2 as a Greatest Hits they removed the way the ground caused drag for the player. This turned a game where it was very difficult to beat the Computer racers into a laughably easy game.
I had no idea they did that! Why would they!?! They already had a hit game, why change it!?!

Never realized the PS2 version of Code Veronica was different? I recently played through it a few months back using a Game Shark 😅. I loved the story and setting. I always wondered what happened to Leo err I mean Steve?
I wish they had left old Dicaprio in there from the Dreamcast version. Steve was such an incredible nerd.... I would have liked him better as Leo 🤣
I also used GameShark when playing this game. My favorite resident evil. I loved the story,too. We need a remake.
I can understand the hate towards repentence if i didnt switch over to the pc version i would have probably quit playing too. Its a shame that console versions are underpatched . Hopefully when the console version gets the mp update they also add the eternal item description

@RNGGamerYT well if you do ever wanna go back to isaac maybe get it on pc and play with mods. The modding community is pretty amazing and adds alot more content to the game especially the fiend folio. Also it's been confirmed the online mp is coming to pc around November
Agree 100% on Binding of Isaac. It's also my favorite game ever, thousands of hours played....heck I'm playing a daily run right now as I watch this video. I play on PC and ended up uninstalling the Repentance dlc and have never looked back.
It's been a huge relief not playing repentance!
I played code veronica on my PS2 and I remember people hating it at that time,i loved it,even graphics were crisper.

Maybe this X version is the reason the game seems to have a bad reputation these days? I remember the game was seen a lot more favorably many years ago. But by this point the vast majority are only familiar with the X version. Intriguing. 😎

I remember playing Batsugun on the MAME arcade last night I made pretty good progress my dodges are incredible even in fast forward ⏩ I farthest I gotten is the 4th boss fight in stage 4

I was just thinking "Code Veronica was hard? Why don't I remember that??" This partly explains it though. The first time I ever played through it was on the Dreamcast. I bought it again for the PS2 years ago and still have it, I might have to pop it in and see what happens. I don't remember now if I replayed it before or not.

Yeah, but if they showed the "hidden areas" on the map they wouldn't be "hidden" anymore, LOL. And EFF Streets of Rage 4. Streets of Rage 4 is just taking up space on my PS4 hard drive that I would rather give to more deserving games (which is pretty much any other game out there). It does NOT surprise me AT ALL that Dot Emu would put an impossible mode or impossible opponents into a game. Dot Emu is all about screwing over the players and laughing all the way to the bank. EFF Dot Emu too.

I listen to a ton of video game pods and different channels on you tube. When looking back I can not get anyone to mention or research the game on the ps2 called The Suffering. Do you own it? That would be dope if you covered it

They won't! The creator even came out and said they he wanted to change the game on everyone and make it harder because he was tired of streamers winning all the time
It's a shame that with Isaac that your not able to choose in game which version you play.
I have Repentance and AB+ on Switch physically, so can play those- I would love to try the earliest version.
The in game not knowing what items are and what they do is really shitty imo for players.
Also, making the items/players weaker with an installment felt like a backwards step.
Better to just add some stronger enemies.
As for making paths so convoluted maybe cool to start, but soon becomes tedious to play.
I hope the McMillen flash games get a console release sometime, I'd really like to try them all out.

Awesome video but that sucks they did that to one of your favourites. Most of these I haven’t played before but I use to trade GameBoy Games with a buddy back in the day. I remember having Amazing Spider-Man for like a week and not having much fun with it. I do remember trading back and being glad to have to copy of Donkey Kong back.😂

I respectfully disagree with you on Code Veronica. I played a tons of hours on Dreamcast so I was ready for any other version. I played years later on PS2 with friends... and I never recognized any of those changes before (beside newer scenes that were not in DC version). I played when they watching me amazed (they were not RE players of the classic RE) and I was never frustrated, it was such a fun experience^^ I was died very thin of times, so I don't understand why is so hard for some people of the RE community... for me the hardest are: RE1 Advanced mode on Director's Cut and RE1 Remake. The other for me are easy games made for enjoy a masterpiece horror. I consider, alas, Silent Hill infierior to RE even on sounds (with all the respect to Yamaoka)

I beat RE1 remake with knife only... and even that was easier than Code Veronica for me 🤣

That's a lie. I'm definitely going to be playing Code Veronica, but I'll be doing it on the Dreamcast. I'm already someone that makes every enemy a bullet sponge so I guess I'll at least save a few clips if I do it this way.
I love the look of Blasphemous. I wonder if the second one is a bit easier.... Probably not but it's so freaking cool I'm willing to be frustrated.

I've never played Binding of Isaac, but I still feel terrible for you. And the sad thing is, this isn't the first game that's been screwed over with modern changes, and it won't be the last.

Hahaha love that code veronica review buddy it defo need's to be molded. First playthrough on that is a nightmare so when i play it now i don't really noticed the flaws that much anymore because i know when the random switch stuff happens lol.
Blasphemous is fantastic dude a 9/10 for sure.
Speaking of stuff that i thought was decent not great because it is not the best in the series and i know this that was made worse with an update. Is Dark Souls II Scholar of the First Sin. I litteraly can not stand what they did to the game. Anytime i feel like replaying DS2 i replay the vanilla version over it everytime.

I played MSX games before the only game that I’m capable to beat is Zanac EX I am terrible at MSX games I did not expect them to be that hard I’ll rank those games on the MSX as a 11

Nope... it was a visual effect that is part of the item that crashed it. Nothing on OBS will make my PS5 crash... which is what I was playing it on

I feel like that's the version that everyone seemed to play. Most of the people in chat grew up playing it on the Dreamcast

I man I lived repentance but yes too many secrets and unlocks. Was able to complete it in about 200+ hrs but I feel ya after I beat it I was done. Really no need to get every thing…
The game really taunts you into completing it. But, I'm so glad to be done with it... it was a huge relief
I heard streets of rage 4 before the only streets of rage game that I am able to beat is streets of rage 2 on normal mode and hard mode to unlock the true hardest difficulty in this game on the 2nd controller hold a and b all together on the 1st controller hit start to go to options once you’re in options let go those buttons on the 2nd controller and then you unlock the true hardest difficulty the hardest difficulty is mania the one that I am extremely bad the farthest I gotten is stage 3
I've never even tried the hard mode! The base game is tough enough 🤣

Sounds like you would really hate the original Roguelikes, such as Nethack, Rogue, and Angband. The ones from the 80's and into the 90's.
Roguelite is pretty different from Roguelikes in my opinion.
I've played Rogue and Legerdomain. They are harder... but neither of them expect you to beat the game over 100 times, find every secret, and every possible item in the game 🤣
I understand the difference between Rogue lite and like. Isaac straddles the line
Blasphemous 1 & 2 are easily some of the best Metroidvania games Ive ever encountered.

All around an improvement on the original formula. The story carries over with the deep, body horror lore.
If you are a Metroidvania lover and haven’t played them already, there are a few more Souls-Like 2d Vanias that are worth every second:
Bloodstained
Sundered
Salt and Sanctuary
Salt and Sacrifice
Iconoclasts (not a Souls-Like, but a classic Metroidvania with very impressive and original controls)
And for hidden gems:
The Mummy: Demastered (WayForward made a masterpiece of a game in this one. Interesting movement mechanics - makes me wish the Universal Monster Universe actually took off so we got more of this)

I have never been good at Isaac, merely decent. I HAAAAAAAAAAAATE timed things, and there are so many in the game. I will literally never unlock The Forgotten because of the timer, and the buff to mom's foot in Repentance.I got a couple hundred hours out of my 80 bucks, so can't really complain too much, but I've shelved it as well. In other news, I was able to finally source a copy of Alice Madness Returns on the 360! It'll be here next week and I'm very excited about it.
It took me a while to unlock the forgotten, too. I had to use a guide.

I'm sure the irony wasn't lost on you, RNG Gamer moaning about RNG. For the record The binding of Isaac is one of my favourite games too. But I actually like the fact it doesn't give you much info on pick ups, encourages replay.
I'm just frustrated that I'm at 99.99% completion, and that last part is for a secret that you can't even see unless you look at an online guide. I just rolled that frustration into an airing of grievances 🤣

I am going to play the older version from now on. The game is constantly taunting you to complete it. Even after you do, it wants you to do it 2 more times.
I never bothered with code Veronica. The franchise around that time was becoming over saturated with all the spinoff games they were making left and right. I know a lot of people loved it, but screw that switching back and forth. I remember that from 2 but it wasn't bad or hard lol. Anyways, have a good one.

I understand your frustration wiht Binding of Isaac, Repentance nerfed so many damage items mostly, it feels very frustrating, which is sad because many of the new characters are very fun to play as. Luckily on PC there are mods to fix all this, but the dev should fix the problems not the community.

Ruined one of the best games of all time yeah I felt the same for FFVII rebirth, just designed to waste your time and take all the best moments/parts from the original (story, characters and materia system) and either change them so they are unrecognisable or in the case of materia much more controlled (no duplicating materia for you if you take the time to master them anymore). While adding stuff that is at best padding or/and boring to get through and at worst completely nonsensical and/or infuriatingly tedious. Im never finishing that game (50 hours in) ive got a lot of other games I could be playing and ill get my FFVII fix from the original FFVII. Playing through the japanese international edition atm among other old ps1 rpgs I never got to play back in the day.
I never beat code veronica X on ps2 it was way to hard for me especially as I absolutely suck at resident evil games in general. I bought it primarily for the demo of Devil May Cry it contained over here. I never did beat DMC on dante must die mode though (love that game).
Blasphemous is one I want to try one day.
Several people have told me the same thing about rebirth! I still need to play it, but my expectations are tempered 😅
