Remember what happened to Apple's Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premier Pro. So many switched over to Adobe from Apple due to the simplification changes Apple made to Final Cut Pro while many professional users wanted more advanced features. And due to Adobe having Photoshop, Lightroom Classic, After Effects, Audition, and Bridge all Intergrated together with each other made Premier Pro an obvious choice. So, now Apple strikes back at one of Adobe's most important programs. This is probably Adobe's most pinnacle program that even coined the term "photoshopping". So, Apple wants revenge for what happed to their video editor last time. And they might do the same thing again with simplification.
@7:00: I disagree: Cameras should not have sims in them (for battery and privacy), and camera menus need more options, not less. The reason why "pro" cameras are falling behind is because of *computational photography* that every cellphone is now doing automaticly and "pro" cameras are just not even trying (except for a little by Olympus\OM Sys and Panasonic... but it's not nearly enough). "Pro" should mean more control, options, flexibility and capability: not less. (But yes, clean up the menus and remove superficial limitations like only being able to take three photos for an exposure bracket (I want at least 9, and I would use more), and not being able to combine with other techniques).
I'm glad somebody is talking about the horrific user interface you have to live with to shoot Sony. I know a lot of people do it, but I never could. I'm also close to taking the leap to Hasselblad. I'm sick of Canon's bizarre choices, and if it wasn't for the fact that Nikon has been making some noise, plus the fact that Hasselblad lenses are so hard to come by, I probably would have gone that way already.
I am extremely tempted at getting Photomator and paying outright as before apple bought it they were catching up pretty quick and I'm crossing my fingers that apple makes the changes faster with all their financial backing.
The overly complex menu system was one of the main reasons I invested in a Hasselblad X2d. My gosh that menu system is a dream!! Nevermind the amazing 102MP images.
About the menu: I once mailed Nikon support that it should be possible to export all settings to an excel sheet. I only have an Z6(i) and for each base setting (PASM + Ux = 4 of them) you can make about 250 settings. If you use all Ux you could have to enter up to 1000 settings! And then I haven't counted video settings! Plug in an USB-cable to a computer, export the settings and then control them from an Excel-sheet! That would be a leap forward! It should also be possible to export settings from one camera type to another within the same brand, of course only those settings that are equal on both types. It would be a blessing when upgrading the camera from e.g. Z6(i) to Z6iii.
It's already begun. On the Mac even, the new "clean up" or remove tool in Photos is a great beginning - complete with a feedback form and set-up for sending in the image in question. It's already (yay) keeping me out of Photoshop for quick workflow on messy stage shot backgrounds and some obstacles on the jpegs (I hate Lightroom and just use Photos, referenced, dozens of libraries, for cataloguing, sorting, etc. then of course raw into Photoshop).
I do agree about how cameras really need a massive UI upgrade, more in line with the gold standard of the phone cameras for ease of use, dial driven, etc. I grew up with 35mm SLRs. I am used to menu diving, but good grief camera menus are so ridiculous these days. I have a Canon R10, but on numerous occasions I find myself fighting the camera because one too many options changed and now it's not performing the way I expected. Then I reach for my phone because that moment isn't going to happen again and the phone can capture it, even if not as well. But if I'm facing this, how about a teenager? They're simply not going to bother with it. And that's what will kill a brand in the long run. And from what I've seen, all brands are guilty of this.
Let me make it simpler. Professional and prosumer cameras should RUN THE ANDROID OPERATING SYSTEM and essentially be an android phone with a viewfinder, giant sensor and big ass lens. They should run every app that runs on an android phone. All the knobs, dials and switches simply interfaces to the OS via an app running in the background. All the computational photography stuff and all the Adobe stuff, it's all there. It is up to the user if they want to have a cellular plan or simply operate it as a Bluetooth/WiFi only device.
I love nikon interface: i need to change a video setting - i go to video setting. I need to change a photo setting - i go to photo settings, i need to change something genereal or buttons - i go to those settings. How would you like it to look? good point. the manufacturers forgot about useability. Well, after donkey's years, I am finally quitting the Adobe habit. I have cancelled my subscriptions and now I have 3 weeks to decide what to use for my next photo/video editing requirements. No thanks to Apple in these regards. I use a mac, an iPhone, all that. But I'd never want to rely on Apple when it comes to professional work. They are a consumer-oriented company. Remember Aperture for photographers? Remember Logic for musicians? A consumer-oriented company like Apple will just through you under the bus if they feel like, as they don't depend on you. Adobe depends on photographers. Ableton depends on musicians. Apple does not.
Absolutely spot on with the camera features Tony. Still not sure what the boardroom level strategy is with Pixelmator, Apple have dabbled a faltered with pro level Apps in the past, Maybe they are searching for another repeat cash cow (software subscriptions?) as the Upgrade train is slowing given the maturity of their key hardware platforms. I would also note that the only thing Apple acknowledge as a camera is the iPhone, so what the heck do they want with Raw processing software?
Great suggestions for new camera features. Dedicated cameras have way better hardware - but the software in an iphone has left them behind. My iphone takes better spur of the moment, hand held low light photos than my fullframe mirrorless with a prime lens. modern camera specs are sufficient for 98% of us - plenty of resolution and FPS. and low light performance isn't making any huge improvements. software is the real opportunity, and it's gotta be more than "film simulations."
Regarding menu, my Nikon mirrorless bodies have an "i" (info) button which provides a top-down view of the critical settings once they are set up the way you want them. It makes it so easy to set up your shot.
The Adobe competition is much needed. I'm happy with my package and how powerful lightroom and Photoshop are but if apple keeps the software for these as cheap Adobe will see alot of lost subscriptions and hopefully not get any more expensive which it absolutely will if there's noone to challenge them.
I wonder why Apple didn't keep up with its Aperture software years ago. They let that drop, but now want to buy Pixelmator? Well, if they torpedo Adobe I wish them luck.
My conclusion with Canon in particular is their software developers are horrible. The new R5m2 can’t do SFTP; at least, I can’t get it to work. The apps that run on my Mac are horrible. The menu system, to me, isn’t too bad but I’ve been using it for 20+ years so I’m use to it. Not being able to search for a menu item, as you mentioned, really does suck.

Senja, Norway? Really I'm from Senja, that's cool!
Olympus have operated that way for the last 20 years!
The Adobe competition is much needed. I'm happy with my package and how powerful lightroom and Photoshop are but if apple keeps the software for these as cheap Adobe will see alot of lost subscriptions and hopefully not get any more expensive which it absolutely will if there's noone to challenge them.
Proof the camera can’t do everything for you.
I wonder why Apple didn't keep up with its Aperture software years ago. They let that drop, but now want to buy Pixelmator? Well, if they torpedo Adobe I wish them luck.
a $5k high end cannot compete image stabilization with a $300 action camera ... what a joke
I agree with all of it. would love sony 100mp and f2 zooms and f1.2 primes
Anytime someone ditches Adobe, or any other subscription based software, I %#$@ rejoice. 😉 Not everyone is a pro and able to deduct the expense.
No fan of Apple or Adobe. Two excessively controlling companies.
Not being able to search for a menu item, as you mentioned, really does suck.
where's Panasonic in the quarterly reports?
I run Adobe on iMac so hoping Apple does not Sabotage that.
Hey man loving your Panerai watch! 🙌 ;) Cool post! cheers!
I always liked my Nikon Z5. It is an excellent full frame travel camera and street camera..
Dont really care about A1, want to see RX10 update soon.
So sick of Software as a service. I welcome any new programs that I can just buy and own.
What's the difference between software as a service and Internet and mobile phone or streaming services and electricity and others as a service? Asking for a friend...
@ I guess it just seems like, eventually, we will own nothing. If we don’t draw a line somewhere, everything will be a subscription.
What makes you think pixelmator will not be subscription?
@ wishful thinking I guess.
DJI is my favorite , great cinematography. saludos
