The original Godzilla had a genuinely terrifying presence. His roar is absolutely chilling. Even more so when you know what inspired the creation of the monster.
We all know Godzilla is an allegory of nuclear weapons dropped on Japan in 1945 Godzilla himself according to lore was just a normal lizard from a fictional island in Solomon Islands who mutated from radioactive seawater due to nuclear testing
0:09 is my one of my all time favorite Godzilla roars. The almost screaming nature of it sounds like the cries of a tortured and terrified soul combined with an air raid siren. If I heard that in real life, I would start running and never stop in fear of the sheer horror behind me.
In my opinion, the best roars in the entire series. They're so aggressive and loud. They sound almost like a train going over tracks, combined with screaming. So epic. The roars in the new American one sound amazing as well. Can't wait to see it tonight.
couldnt agree more, the rawness of the sound is something that gets cleaned up and in my opinion is unnecessary to do so. But yes, the 2014 roar (and the ones before that movie) is awesome as well
I love the sounds of the original Godzilla, his roars are eerie, he sounds massive, alien and terrifying. This truly makes someone step back in fear an look up in awe of this wondrous creature
Brian Tolliver Where did you hear that from, because thats what I always thought too, I just cant remember where I got it. And where the hell did they get the idea it was made from a rubber glove, because Ive never heard that until I just watched a review about the upcoming movie.
I watched a documentary on Godzilla some time ago. I cant tell you what the name of it was or what channel it was on. If I ever come across it again I will try and come back here and link it.
The end of this roar (0:09) is the best moment in the history of Godzilla roars. All variations of this part were what made his voice of doom so special.
If the 1954 film were to be remade, I'd want them to make it as the original version was: A horror movie. Not like a jumpscare kind of movie, but make it in a way that whenever you see Godzilla or here him approaching or roaring, I'd want it to sent shivers down my spine.
S.KullRandom What do you mean they screwed it up? Legendary wasn't going for Godzilla the villain, they were going for Godzilla the action hero, which is what he has been for most of his life outside the original and 1984. What you're saying is like someone saying the Wright brothers screwed up their attempt to build a submarine. They were never trying to do that.
This is terrifying it’s just so unsettling and unnatural that it just sends chills down my spine every time I hear it, no wonder it was so successful. The new ones aren’t nearly as unsettling but they get the job done
I completely agree. What made Godzilla 1954 so amazing (not just for what it accomplished at it's time) was how the film wasn't just a monster movie. The film was almost like a documentary or a reporting of an actual disaster. If you took out all of the footage and references to godzilla and replaced them with say, hurricane footage, it would still feel right. The creators treated it like a real disaster...and it was simply terrific.
0:13 and 0:18 are my favorites. The first sounds appropriately like a being who is the last of his kind suffering from radiation, sad, lonely, miserable, and filled with rage. The other sounds like the Beast of the Apocalypse rising from the sea to pass judgement on humanity
Thank you, Godzilla. You allowed me to express my anger and despair properly. My bickering family members stared at me with quite disturbed expressions. Also, it made them shut up for a while.
Fun fact! Godzilla's roars were actually made from a hinge on a gate, leading to Toho studios in Japan, But i think one of the sound designers made one of the roars from a leather glove across the strings of a double bass, then slowed down and reversed.
Godzilla's roar is an iconic sound effect that has been used in a lot of other media. The sound effect has appeared on The Simpsons, South Park, Pokemon, Chappelle's Show, Malcolm in the Middle, and in songs from Green Day and Sir Mix-A-Lot. Strangely, the American Godzilla movie wasn't able to secure the rights for the roar, and they had to record a different one.
I grew up with the Americanized version of 1954 Godzilla. When I was finally able to find a subtitled version of the Japanese film it was fun to see the differences in the story, and after seeing both films I actually prefer the Japanese version. Hearing the story how it was meant to be adds more to the serious tone, which is what I liked about the original Godzilla in the first place.
I haven't heard these sounds since the 1980s when I watched one of the Godzilla films on Creature Double Feature on WLVI-TV in Boston. That scream gave me nightmares for days after I first hear it. And hearing it again today, nearly 40 years later, it still gives me anxiety, Hopefully no nightmares tonight!
It’s crazy that this roar is them dragging a resin covered leather glove along the loosened strings of a double bass. It’s crazy how they improvised back in the 50’s for sound effect
0:21 The last roar carried over in King Kong vs. Godzilla when Godzilla, heading to shore (shortly after being freed from the ice prison), was attacked by the military tanks. Note: A higher pitched version of that particular roar was used several times in King Kong vs Godzilla (beginning when the underwater submarine was caught on fire by Godzilla who was in the midst of freeing himself from his ice prison).
I like the fact that the Americanized version brought it to new audiences and I definitely understand the appeal of giant monsters stomping on cities, but the best part of Gojira is how all that derives from the story. I honestly have really high hopes for the upcoming film even though I find it pretty likely the sci fi will serve the monster, rather than the other way around like G54.
These are all roars of pain, anguish and aimless anger. There's no triumphant bellowing of victory, there's no threatening display of pride and power, these are the roars of a creature in pain, utterly confused as to what it exists for and for all its power, it can only destroy. The very original Godzilla is a horribly tragic character and they went above and beyond in portraying him as such. Masterfully done too, it's good to see they looked at this movie when making Shin Godzilla.
I won't soon forget the moment Raymond Burr was impacted beneath that rubble. One of the most memorable scenes from a film involving larger-than-life kaiju!
The one thing that will always make this the top Godzilla and scariest Godzilla for me is the footsteps of doom and the roar of terror this Godzilla gives off
The second roar genuinely creeps me out. The echo in the sound and the almost too bassy of a sound makes it sound like we can literally do nothing to stop it. There's a sense of dread and I don't know why
TIL (today I learned) that Godzilla's infamous roar was actually done using a double bass with a leather glove coated in pine-tar resin rubbed against the strings and then slowed down to sound like a roar.
