At the end of the day I am so glad that Tarja Turunen and Nightwish are way happier nowadays.
PLUS, I cannot even imagine Tarja's life without her solo albuns, Specially her Last 2 solo albuns that show such creativity and maturity as the complete artist she is nowadays ("In the Raw" is my favorite Tarja Turunen album, it stands up there with Century Child and Oceanborn as milestones in her career). "Ave Maria in Plein Air" also shows Tarja's vocal technique at its very Best!
Nightwish also found in Floor Jansen as the perfect fit for their current sound, so I guess they could have followed separated ways without exposing themselves so much, keeping business private as it should be done. But as Tarja herself said: the Past you cannot change, but you Always can change the Future.
I believe that both Tuomas and Tarja are more experienced and mature people nowadays and they genuinely turned this page in their books of Life!
I'm also glad that you tryied to understand both sides of this story, even if, at the end of the day, we will never know everything because we weren't there at the time (although I was already a fan when it happened).
    All the best to you!

They could have come to her and said: "hey, about that deal for another album and another tour... we don't think it's gonna work. Let's end it after this one." And parted ways in a friendly manner. But they chose to portray themselves as victims and her as the villain so the huge part of the fanbase that thought she was the soul of Nightwish would not hate them, and would continue following them (not her) because she was a monster in the letter. That's how they chose to act. I get that they were young, and even though they have admitted that itwas wrong, the way they handled things, they never apologized to her. Only Marko did.

@@akaha001Pretty much. They tried to assasinate her character.
Unless there is a public apology, the audience will not get over it. They still haven't made things right after all these years.
The keyboard player merely admitted that it was "handled poorly", but justified himself saying that he "felt cornered" so he acted on instinct, like animals do. I'm sorry, but animals do not meticulously plan to backstab their friend in such a public manner, nothing about that letter was "spontaneous". It was cold, calculated and cruel.

Bullshit, they had discussions but Tarja and her demon behind Husband did not listen and did not want to talk it through, but worked behind the rest of the band and aimed to raise Tarja over the other musicians, tried to use Nightwish band only as a base to Lift Tarja's Solo Career, only this was the aim of the two, so BULLSHIT!. In this video Tarja is playing the part of victim and gathers sympathy from public - you can master the tears and tell the story purely from their view. When the decision was made it was the only one to keep the band alive and continuing, it was done for the band, not Tarja, not Tuomas, not any individual. Do not be so naive watching any "Press Conference" of any human thinking that they do not raise their benefits into the stories they tell! Notice the raising up of "countless offers from other bands.." information or rather marketing - this is her "go on and make sure you have interest to your Solo career, save what you can". AND Nightwish is Tuomas, no matter who is singing his compositions and Lyrics, vocalist is only the means to make Tuomas'es music alive and as shown, as long as Tuomas has continued in Nightwish, they have succeeded and no vocalist or band member has paralysed the band and the exceptional creation force of Tuomas!

They literally fired Anette for getting pregnant, and wrote a horrible song about her on the next record 💀. TBH I don't think it's "the band". I think it's literally just the keyboard player that's the problem.

  • @jussihamalainen7692
    @jussihamalainen7692 Год назад +10

Wow, this comment section is turning angry quickly. I'll just make the following two points:
1: It is absolutely OK to fire people. In the case of Nightwish, it is Tuomas's project and always has been. If you can't keep working with certain people, you do what you gotta do.
2: It is not OK to fire people with a public open letter. Regardless of what happened between the band members, you should not be the first to start airing dirty laundry. If the fired party starts attacking you in the press, obviously you have a right to respond. But firing someone and attacking them publicly, for problems that have hitherto been private? That is unprofessional.
I think everyone should just put this episode into 'mistakes were made' file. From everything I've seen, both Tuomas and Tarja seem like the nicest of people. I mean, I still love Led Zeppelin despite the fact that Jimmy Page is a genuinely terrible person (to put it mildly), unlike everyone involved in this situation.

For me, as a huge fan of both NBightwish and especially Tarja, who has followed them passionately pretty much from day one, seeing Tarja crying like this is like watching my own sister crying, thats how much I adore her! She always has been, and always will be my #1 metal godess, I dont care if Floor is more versatile as a singer or more technically skilled or whatever, I grew up with Tarjas voice and no other voice will ever be able to truly take her place for me!
Dont get me wrong, I do love Floors voice as well and I really dont think that they could have found a better replacement for Tarja, but Tarja is still #1 in my mind!
I hate the way the band handled the whole thing, but in the end I think it worked out for the better, we all got to hear some fantastic, very unique music that we probably never would have gotten to hear if Tarja had not gone solo, her stuff is so experimental compaired to Nightwish

It shows that she is good also on acting. Tears of a crocodile. She had already said she is out, not going to tour, only record one album. Now she was freed to pursue her own career. Sadly the reason why the band had to try the public letter (which backfired, perhaps because it was so honest that it showed the anger of the band) to try to mitigate and not allow Tarja/Marcelo to make the narrative.

It shows that she is also good at acting. Whenever women cry publicly it's almost always conscious manipulation, or at least semiconsciously done because it's their magic bullet. @@thomashoffmann1063 I'm Finnish and followed the band since the 90s. Though I don't think that matters on seeing if the emotions are faked or not.
It's antropological fact that women cry for manipulation. It sounds bad when it's put on text like that, but the point still stands.
Certainly there's also other type of crying, but here it's obviously manipulation. And you manipulate with real tears. It's semiconscious manipulation, you are not necessarily that aware of what you are doing, you just allow it to happen because it works.
Though in this situation she knows what she is doing, she is trying to negate the bad image done by the letter. And in general I wouldn't mind much, but I dislike the fanbase falling for this and getting so angry with the band.
The problem with comment sections is that written words are so poor at communicating the message. When I read my own comment, I see how it's so easy to take it as me hating Tarja, or blaming her for orchestrating the whole thing like a show that is preplanned. That's not what I meant.
I'm not angry at her but in general angry on how easily people are to manipulate.

      @thomashoffmann1063 Год назад

@@juzujuzu4555i see your point clearer now. So you mean when you manipulate people you can do this semiconsciously. When you are doing something semi consciously, i wouldn’t describe this as acting. Acting is done on purpose, when you are playing something in front of an audience for example. What she does here is not acting. Here she is showing how she really feels about it. I see you are no Tarja hater now, but you are using the wrong words for what you are trying to say. That’s at least how I see it, and I think you should choose your words more carefully. Otherwise you may be misunderstood and people may get angry on you - or you may get applause from the wrong people (for example Tarja haters).

To some extent I agree with you in that many of the Tarja era songs have never been bettered by Tuomas, and Tarja is amazing and unique. And I am so happy that Tarja is today looking and sounding better than ever and gives every impression of enjoying her concerts. Where we will inevitably differ, is that I am a ‘victim’ of encountering Nightwish through the video of Wacken 13 GLS. As such, I ‘worked back’ to Tarja and Annette and love and appreciate both ladies for their very different contributions. But, for me Tuomas request ‘you have 48 hours to learn the set’ created the Nightwish in its final form. I can totally understand your position as a ‘Tarja die hard’. As someone totally infected by ‘Flooradoration’, the ‘non Floor’ Imaginaerum is my favourite Nightwish album followed by Once. And you're right. I think, that she really doesn't like it when people keep asking her about Nightwish. No questions about her past in the band, because she says it's an essential part of her life. But she doesn't like questions about her relationship with Tuomas and the breakup with the band. She tries to divert from those questions, which I noticed from her interview.

  • @mhtuaes

It's important when she talks about the comparisons with Nightwish. She was and still is attacked today by a lot of Nightwish fans that say her solo career is bad because it's not "as good as Nightwish". But she doesn't want to do Nightwish. She wants to do herself. We still call her music symphonic metal but she calls it hard rock, and it has obviously classical and symphonic touches. She has said "my next rock album" for years now, not metal. But we still associate her as the symphonic metal queen. So many people talk about her as "ex-Nightwish". Interviewers ask her today, almost 18 years since she left the band, if there is any chance of a reunion. So, the comparisons never ended. The ghost of Nightwish still haunts her to this day. But she is at peace now. Marko will open two of her shows soon, one in July and the other in August, and they will probably sing together. They have met in 2018 at a Christmas tour and sang Ave Maria together. Both of them said they hugged and cried a lot backstage. So it's nice to see how far she's come despite all difficulties.

From the limited information we have, it appears that much of this situation stemmed from a lack of proper communication. This piece of news was a true shock for the fans too ... not only for her. Tuomas has admitted that the way was wrong and he thinks that at that moment they could not find other or better way but later he thinks that it really should have been done totally different way (maybe something like she expected). They do not communicate much still but it is true that Tarja contacted Tuomas warmly when she heard that his father had passed away. She remembers him (father of Tuomas) because they truly were like local friends all in those small circles of Kitee. With Marco they did some Christmas song gigs together...do react to those too...they also hugged each other when they met at the hotel. Tuomas was very down after that separation process...and the next song was "Poet and the Pendulum" following "Bye Bye Beautiful" and "Master Passion Greed". Those all are grand songs and poetry and they do reflect to Tarja somehow and show clearly the overall meaning and level of pain behind.

When they agreed Tarja would do 2 more albums and 2 more tours....that is the moment it went wrong. They should never have made that deal. A final tour....they could have called it the End of an Era Tour.... it could have been a beautiful goodbye.
And then the band made additional mistakes. 2 songs on the album Once that kind of reflect the awkwardness of the situation (Romanticide and GLS) I would not have made Tarja sing sing that (even though I love both songs) And then the letter: A simple "It was awesome, but it is not working out so good anymore" would have been way, way better.
In the end it got us to a Nightwish with Floor and I am glad we all got to see that.

I've had enough symphonies of sorrow
Beasts of prey one breath away
    Masterpiece of treachery
Kept my thoughts buried in a box
With each shot I still kept it locked
You drew a play written with my blood
Went ahead just to feed the lot
I've had enough symphonies of sorrow

She admits that everything the band wrote is true. "Everyone of this band could have stated that they are leaving in 1 day notice" while she perfectly knows that in her case it would mean the band is essentially dead, while anyone except Tuomas can be replaced.
This is clear "look at me I'm a poor woman" kind of attempt to clear her name and put the blame on the band. And that pisses me off.
It's so obvious that she is just pissed because she got exposed by the letter. And I do get that completely, she has every right to be. If she would have just stated that she is sad because of the way her bandmates fired her, then I would have respect for her. But when you try to manipulate the situation through fake crying and try these stupid ways to damage control, it just pissed me off.
But people make mistakes, so while I'm on the side of the band, I'm not against Tarja. I loved her in the band, love her voice and performances. And while I'm on the side of the band, I also think their timing with the letter was poor, and the content was little too harsh.

@@juzujuzu4555 then we don't disagree as much as I thought, but there are still points I see from a different angle.
She did say she was upset about the way it was handled. She did say that. She didn't deny that she wasn't happy in the band and already thought about leaving, and that she would have preferred to leave on her own terms (I also see why the band wanted to end their cooperation earlier, I feel like that's entirely understandable).
As for the airplane fight, I think hearing the whole conversation would shed a lot more light on the context and I don't know who I would agree with more afterwards, but even when said in anger I understand why it hurt Tuomas. I don't think she would have actually left like that, she is too responsible and dedicated to her work, but of course you need your band members to be committed.
If I would fault the other band members for anything it's letting their management be this chaotic and endorsing it. (Not Emppu necessarily, he critised their management for not doing their job properly, making alcoholic drinks and having a good time a priority over the band's needs (his words), and I do think this was hardest on Tarja) but the problems started even before Marcelo came into the picture so it wasn't just the two management situation -- that only made already existing problems worse. And Tuomas avoiding any kind of conflict. Which, I am kinda the same, so again I get it, but working together needs a lot of communication and everyone was doing a bad job with that apparently.
And also the "fake" crying... I don't like the "women are manipulative" rhetoric at all. Maybe a lot of women don't have their walls up as much as many men do because we weren't raised with the "real men don't cry" attitude (which is bullsh*t anyway). But I would have been surprised if she hadn't gotten emotional about this. It was a form of betrayal, because the content of the letter was personal, and it was published. Of course the shock sits deep. And this wasn't long after the letter. So yeah, there are no facts for this, but my feeling tells me it was genuine.

Well, maybe Tarja will see in retrospect how things didn't work as they should and also from the point of view of others, and not just from her own point of view.
Of course, a decision like that should be handled nicely from everyone's point of view, and at that time Nightwish apparently didn't have the skills to do that, now surely the matter would be handled much nicer from Tarja's point of view.

The problem where Tarja messed up is that she ended up in a band that loved living the tour-bus-band-lifestyle, where she HATED every minute on that bus. That is why she asked for shorter tours in bigger stadiums...fly-in, fly-out. The rest of the band did not want to change, so Tarja decided she would have to leave Nightwish, which she announced after the Century Child Tour in 2003. Tarja was not in a hurry to leave and the band did not want to see her go, so they (together) agreed she would do 2 more albums and 2 tours together with Nightwish. But when the first tour got extended from 12 to 18 months without even asking, Tarja felt their agreement was void. And unhappy employees often say "I don't get paid enough to take this shit" ....and then it turned south...
Her husband may have been an asshole towards the band, but in the end he just stood up for his wife. And when you OWN a couple of tickets that were given to you, you can sell them... Not something I would do, but that is not stealing.

I totally ‘buy in ‘ to Tuomas and the guys’ version of events. Tarja had become a diva who thought , also driven by mr tarja, that she was the star of and bigger than the band. And was planning to leave anyway. But Once was the climax of ‘phase one Nightwish’ so she left a good legacy. And without the ‘fall out’ there would have no ‘Poet and the pendulum’ no ‘ imaginaerum’ and no ‘latter day Freddie Mercury’ (in terms of stage presence and charisma) in the form of Floor. And Tarja herself. In recent concerts she looks and sounds better than ever and gives every impression of enjoying herself. And she is to perform with Marko this year he who apparently told Tuomas ‘its her or me’, so bridges appear to have been rebuilt. Overall, and only coming to Nightwish in 2022, I think the development ofTuomas and the band through Annette and Floor phases has been much better than unchanging Tarja OR WORSE the possible total break up of the band after a period of acrimony. And, 15 or more years on Tarja does indeed look and sound better than ever.

Tuomas couldn't write to her anymore because of that, and the band couldn't have taken the financial hit of not touring.
The band perhaps didn't handle the firing optimally, but on the other hand they knew the risks of allowing Tarja/Marcelo make up their narrative. Based on her reply to the open letter it's obvious she cannot argue against any of their points because she doesn't even try. Instead she focuses on becoming a victim and all the simps in the world eat the hook line and sinker.

The opposite however was not possible. The letter couldn't have killed Tarja's career.
The letter perhaps was not professional way to fire someone, but neither was Tarja's behavior. For most people the band was just Tarja's backup band. She had immense amount of power over the band. That was their attempt to gain some of it back.
On principle I think the public letter wouldn't have been a problem, but the content and timing was poor.
But you have to remember that it was not Tuomas' letter, it was unanimous letter by them all. They all thought that was the way to go. And it was about the future of the whole crew, as Tarja wasn't going to tour anymore.

I have to say, and I understand that this is rock and metal, but this was an act (seeing with today's eyes) it was sexism, it was mistreatment and a hard blow. That moved the whole environment a bit, and not so much, that nowadays the bands of female singers have given their place or something as simple as their privacy and dressing room to their vocalists.
I understand that Toumas created an incredible album after this separation but everything revolved around him, he was the victim, he was the friend betrayed by his friend, he was the one who was close to suicide, but his behavior was very childish.
Perhaps at that time it was all very passionate on the part of the fans and it took us years to mature and understand that deep down Tarja only fell in love with one man, her husband and father of her daughter, and that somehow Toumas and the band pushed Tarja into Marcelo's arms, because she met him on the South American Tour, first when a fan in Mexico came up on stage, threw Tarja to the ground and touched her, the band kept playing and they almost came out to say that the show it ended because Tarja didn't want to continue singing, and not because she had been abused. Marcelo was there, and then in Brazil, Argentina and Chile Marcelo was their tour guide because Tarja was alone on the tour.
Beyond the fact that Tarja continues to make music about overcoming this issue, she never put herself in that place of denouncing that everything that happened was an abuse, just as Toumas now celebrates life, he does not hate him anymore or write songs for him again. to her.

No sche didn't. Tuomas was this 🤏 close to breaking up the band way before Tarja decided to leave (bc of Sami and bc Tuomas didn't have the courage to tell him so he had him fired via the management). The band's history has always been rocky but sure blame it all on Tarja why dontcha
