- This video is for you if you are shopping for a new or used boat and you don’t want to be fooled by a slick salesman? Or maybe you have recently bought one, and you don’t want to appear like a noob around the dock or ramp. Boating terms are different than cars and by the end of this video we want to help you learn them so you are more comfortable with the basic terms you will hear in the boating lingo world. Stick around to the end of the video when we provide a free download of a cheat sheet with these terms listed on a diagram. In this video we will cover:
1. The basic hull/bottom terms. 1:08
2. The basic boat locations/areas. 2:57
3. Basic boat measurements. 3:54
4. Other common nautical terms. 5:46

should make a video explaining about small boats and big motor and exceeding the maximum hp rating for a boat
My boat has a speedometer calibrated in MPH. A boating instructor insisted that no boat has its speedo in MPH...only Knots/hr. Who is correct?
Its really easy to remember Port and Starboard when you realise where the words originated:
Starboard is from Steer-board. Before boats had wheel houses and were steered by hand with a rudder, this was on the right of the boat because most people are right handed.
When the boat pulled in to Port, it would have to dock on the left hand to avoid damaging the rudder on the right side of the boat. Hence the Port side. So you had the Steer-board side and the Port side.
Hope that helps.
Hey Nick, that is fantastic - thank you! We learned something new today :-)
Port and left have four letters. That's much easier for my smooth crayon eating brain to remember
@@fnerXVI I’ve always remembered port that way too!
Cleat ?
Good overall, but the Freeboard is from the top side of the hull to the water. So basically, the draft and the freeboard always interacts together (adding the draft and the freeboard is the total height of the ship side) depending on the weights applied to the boat (fuel, fresh water, stores, etc).
Really enjoyed the video and the others that you have produced. Very informative for a new boater.
This is such a good video for a novice person. Thanks so much

Please, What is the area or the divider, between the Transom and the working deck? I think it's a mod on my Dell Quay Dory, prevents backwash when hitting the beach!
I'm not Tech savvy, failed to locate the link as mentioned for a lingo terminology print out, ant advice would be greatly appreciated,
