This song is guitarist Steve Hackett's crowning glory with Genesis. He sometimes struggled to have his compositions accepted by the band for inclusion on albums. But this is one song from him that all four members embraced. Nick, you're right. This IS a masterpiece, from a great the Genesis album 'Wind and Wuthering'.
    Great reaction guys.

Yes indeed it was. As Steve once put it so eloquently (as he often does), once you give birth to a song, it can never be unborn.
In recent years I've come to learn that Steve's writing contribution to Genesis music was bigger than I thought. For instance, it washed and Phol who wrote 'For Absent Friends' (Nursery Cryme album), and Steve was also the major writer for 'Can-Utility and the Coastliners (Foxtrot album)

With Jews fighting for their existence, now, against hamas, the opening stanza came to mind: "the Arabs and the Jews, boy, too much for me. They get me confused boy, puts me off to sleep." This song is very appropriate in 2023, no doubt.

"We always watch the queen on Christmas day" Guess the song rang true for British folks for some 45 years or so. But looks like "The Arabs and the Jews boy..." will go on for some interminably longer period of time.

  • @killianlpc

Blood On The Rooftops is pure Steve Hackett. Him and Phil wrote this, and it was one of the few tracks he tried to get on the album. One of the reasons he left the band is because much of his material was getting rejected. This song has such a wonderful romantic feel to it with a beautiful haunting melody. Steve of course is a brilliant classical guitarist too having recorded many classical albums too. It's great that when he tours he still plays all these Genesis classics in their entirety, he was the true romantic spirit of the band. This particular album Wind And Wuthering has a beautiful flow to it. The final suite of songs Unquiet Slumbers For The Sleepers/In That Quiet Earth/Afterglow are just sublime, they are all short tracks but have to be listened to together as they bleed into each other. Live theses tracks are just off the scale! Steve still plays them as off the album, whereas Genesis used to chop them up and uses in medleys. Great reaction again guys, and would love to see you do the aforementioned final suite of tracks from Wind And Wuthering, I think you will be totally moved by them especially Afterglow.

Man would I love to be able to hear this song (and other genesis) for the first time again!!!! Nick, I’m 56. I went through a similar discovery of Genesis as a teenager. A friend gave me a cassette of And Then There Were Three. I was HOOKED. Phil’s voice. The compositions. The ethereal sounds of Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford. I then went backwards to get earlier albums. Holy cow! I then turned all my high school friends on the this band… and they fell in love as well.
Pre-Genesis… I probably like YES the most. Jon Anderson’s voice, and some great prog. Still do! But for me… Genesis just had every aspect of what I personally love. Listening to new albums or old, for the FIRST TIME all those years ago, pretty much defined my life. That’s how much I was into Genesis.
I heard you say on another video, “for me, Genesis is probably my favorite.” I was pumped to hear you say that.
I like a LOT of music. There are many great bands, of course. Steely Dan… unbelievable. But different. YES… incredible. But a bit more sporadic (like Jazz is) than Genesis.
Zeppelin? Hello! But a totally different genre.
Genesis is heavenly, smart, deep, soulful, rich, story-telling, classical undertones, etc.
When I would get another album to explore (like W&W)… I can remember the experience of hearing the chord changes and just being like, “Yes! That’s the RIGHT place to go!” Or “oh man, that is sooo good!” It happened constantly. So delightful.

It helped me escape the "sex, drugs, and rock and roll" mindset that seems to have grabbed our cultures and is causing this huge population of homeless people. The style of rock is fine, but the hedonism that can only lead to difficulties which some bands (not older Prog bands) was never historically anything other than a way to self-destruction.

I think the voice of Phil is recognizably different: it's "sweeter", Peter's voice is more "raw" (this is not a value judgement; I can't say who's voice I like better). The end of this album is probably the best of any of theirs. Instrumental pieces: Unquiet Slumbers for the Sleepers.....; .....In That Quiet Earth; and the wonderful Afterglow.

Definitely this was the sound of early Genesis that I liked so much; I recognized Phil's voice instantly. You're right, he has some unique intonations, inflections, etc. So good to see you both together on New Year's Eve. Surely 2023 will be a great year for you. And for us as we share in your continuning musical journey of discovery,

Good spot on the relative differences in pronunciation between Phil & Pete. Even at this early stage Phil had a little more of that mid-atlantic thing going on.

"Unquiet Slumber For The Sleepers..." [instrumental] misteriosa... oscura y enigmatica, (bajen las luces para la reacción de esta en particular)
... In That Quiet Earth' [instrumental] explosiva y arrasadora,
y finalmente "Afterglow" dulce y profunda, un maravilloso sunset para este álbum con feeling de otoño, Wind 🌬& Wuthering 💨.
    FELIZ 2023 para los 3!!! 🥂✨

Great surprise, thanks! This was a Hackett Collins contribution and someone else mentioned the last album before Steve Hackett departed for a prolific solo career. Interestingly the two of them wrote a short little acoustic gem on Nursery Cryme in 1971 - both joined the band in that year as Genesis were in transition. The song is called ‘For Absent Friends’. It would be worth a listen. Very English, touching…theme of lyrics the mundane routine and meandering of two widows supporting each other without their spouses. They create in that motif quite well (as evidenced by their collaboration on ‘Blood on the Rooftops’) Gracias & Feliz año nuevo, N&L🥰🇨🇦

Pleased you enjoyed this one Lex!! Brilliant. It highlights one of my bugbears about Genesis and thats the little recognition Steve Hackett gets. People always talk of the Gabriel era or the Collins era.but at this point Phil, although a fantastic drummer and vocalist, was not a main writer for the band. Ultimately as we know Hackett left because he didnt feel he was getting enough of his material on but this song is one of his best and the Genesis sound, to my mind, changed completely once he left. Just listen to the difference in atmosphere from this album to the next( And then there were 3) where the guitar sound is much more basic. Also Hacketts solo catalogue is the most ‘progressive’ of all the members. Please as an example i really think youd enjoy the song Shadow of the Hierophant from his first solo album Voyage of the Acolyte. Done while still with Genesis, phil and mike play on it as well. Plus wonderful vocals from Sally Oldfield( mike oldfields sister). A song in two parts with some guitar tapping during the mid section, years before Eddie Van Halen etc…Sorry for the rant but i think Steve has never been given the recognition he deserves for the early Genesis sound.

This was a great collab between Phil and Steve, who were the original “outsiders” in the group of five members. Phil worked his way into the main band faster than Steve and Steve ended up leaving after this album, mostly as he couldn’t get more stuff like this song onto albums. If you listen to the whole album, with the exception of this piece, so much of Steve is layered under Tony’s keyboards. Beautiful album, caught in no-man’s-land for the band. Trick of the Tail prior was Phil’s breakout as lead singer and And the there were three, following wind and wuthering, was the launch of the three man supergroup.

Nick and Lex, given your love for Genesis and classic '70s prog, I highly recommend that you simply work your way through their peak-period albums chronologically, filling in the tracks that you have not yet heard. All the tracks on these albums, I expect, will appeal to you: 1970 Trespass, 1971 Nursery Cryme, 1972 Foxtrot, 1973 Selling England By The Pound, (you've completed 1974 The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway), 1976 A Trick of the Tail, 1976 Wind & Wuthering, and 1978 ...And Then There Were Three. Perhaps you've already listened to more than you've posted here. That's perfectly understandable because I'm sure it's hard to wait to explore more. But if you haven't, I'm sure there are a lot of folks here who will love to spend time with you reacting to all these! And if you do it chronologically you can get a sense of their evolution.

I gotta congratulate you both because your Videos are Simply Extraordinary! I love them, all your 1st Reactions to my Favorite Band Ever like it’s Genesis…Guys, I cried a little with them because you transmit all your emotions through the screen so strongly & I remember when I discovered this Band through my elder brother who was playing this Wind & Wuthering Album all the time in his bedroom, I was a kid then, and when I was a teenager I listened to One for the Vine, must be at the age of 14 or 15 & I flipped out, I loved it so much..a little later, one summer, I listened to The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway whole Album & I flipped even more because it’s a double album so…What a Farewell for Pete, with an Absolute Masterpiece & Timeless Classic Album..So…Thanx so Much for doing this!! Really Glad I discovered your Channel last night..I watched 15 Videos of yours already & reserved 30 other to enjoy today..You really blew my mind, Guys!!
