My eyes started getting watery after hearing this for the first time, such a melancholy but beautiful song. Can’t believe I’m only finding it now
Just came back after 4ish years. This was technically my first ever Vocaloid song, even if I didn’t know what Vocaloid was when I first discovered it and only learned what Vocaloid was almost a year after discovering this song.
I still love it.
I know plenty of people have expressed their theories, but I'd just like to write mine down which makes sense for both PVs. I think.
So, two lovers. One of them, in this case, the one in white, is terminally ill and knows that they don't have long together. She then writes a note to the other for when they are "left behind" when they die wishing that they will still be happy without her and that they can move on and fall in love with someone else. But she was so frightened of hurting the other by leaving them behind and leaving them alone. Together, they devised a plan to run away and when the ill girl dies, the other will commit suicide so they die together and are reborn as twins so they can live together, "meet each other immediately" and the girl won't be ill, so they will have more time together. In the end ("until the end, until this day") the ill girl dies but the other can't bring themself to commit suicide and so "am I the one who shall end everything?" as only the girl in white dies. Again, she wishes the other will be happy without them.
"To the fact that I laughed in the world in which you lived"
She is glad of their times together.
"To the fact that I cursed the future which you saw"
The "curse" is that only she died and that leaves the other sad and lonely in the future, which only the other one will see.
"To your voice, warmth, behaviour and all of your love... Good-bye."
Her last goodbye.

Okay, I have a solid theory after hours analyzing the lyrics, video, and Tohma's liner notes. (CW: suicide, mention of strangulation.)
**TLDR:** White died. Black committed suicide to join White. They are reborn as twins, but they are trapped in an empty world, unable to fully move on (spiritually and emotionally). Realizing this, White decides to kill herself in order to let Black move on. White still holds out hope that they will meet again in another life, eventually.
**Explanation:**
White and Black were lovers in their original life.
White was killed (strangulation marks on her neck at 3:12), and Black committed suicide to be with White (the myth about star-crossed lovers being reincarnated as twins).
In this new life, they are reincarnated as twins, but there's something not right about this new life-they're stuck in this empty world, unable to leave.

And as much as they try, they're not really happy like this.

They are trapping each other here. They are unable to move on from this relationship (emotionally), so they are unable to move on from this cursed existence (spiritually).
Realizing this, White decides to kill herself to free them from this bond-gone-wrong, and allow Black to move on and be happy (I think White is the one who dies because she's the one lying in a bed of flowers at 3:37).

2:02 "[Rather] than both of us being unsatisfied, / I’ll only warm up the conclusion which we wished for." (White deciding to kill herself)
2:23 "My fear of hurting you grew so strong / That I cannot live any longer."

This is supported by this quote from Tohma on the song: "It is a very noble thing to let go of someone and wish for their happiness, but it is also a lonesome thing to do."
And indeed, White is lonely afterward, and does hold out some hope that they can be together once again.
1:10 "Even now, I’m still searching for the one thing / that will reach the you who will be left behind." (Before White kills herself)
1:20 "'Are you doing well?' / 'Has your smile withered off your face yet?' / 'Are you now able to fall deeply, deeply in love with someone [else]?'" (This is something you'd only say when you're no longer in a person's life)

Nightsky Rose There's also the theory (not just my theory; I've read it elsewhere) that the girls are lovers who were reborn as twins, and that one of them killed herself because they obviously couldn't be together. This ties into the whole Japanese "star-crossed lovers will be reborn as twins" thing.
