    I got my #50 today (from the UK). I have to find beading blades as it came w/only the original set of blades. I can’t wait to use it!

    Very informative video, thank you. I'm looking forward to making my first beads with my new old No. 50! Just gotta find an adj. lever for it.

    Great video. I don't personally have a 50 but I do have a 45 with these irons. I find that if I get the blades razor sharp tear out isn't much of an issue. I find a shallow cut and sharp irons beneficial, especially when you encounter a change of grain direction eg: around a knot etc.
    Just my experience of course.

    • @justplanefun

      That’s a fair point. I was able to get clean lines on my first one but my practice piece for the video showed that perhaps some additional honing was in order

    Fun project, thanks for sharing. You used the sliding section with the 1/8th, but I thought blades that small required the other bolt. Is that not the case for beading?

    • @justplanefun
      @justplanefun  10 месяцев назад +1

      Correct. The small blade attachment is required for the two smallest plough (plow?) irons but not for the smallest beading iron since it’s just wide enough to be held in place by the center skate

      @abdossett 10 месяцев назад

      @@justplanefun Thank you for confirming that! Graham Blackburn explained in a video that the when traditional wooden plough planes came to America they kept the British spelling, but when Stanley started making the 45 et. al, the American plow spelling took over. Probably more than you wanted to know, but an interesting fact!

    WOW, that sure is a purdy #50. Notice you didn;t mention how rare the depth stop is

    • @justplanefun
      @justplanefun  2 года назад

      They do seem to be pretty hard to come by sometimes. Especially the smaller one. The beading stop seems to come up more often

    Man the more I watch videos on combo planes, especially the 50, the more I want to hunt one down even though I’m good with the 45. Will there be a video for the 45’s hollow and rounds bases?

    • @justplanefun
      @justplanefun  2 года назад +1

      That’s a great question. I have a few but I don’t have a ton of experience using them. I’ll have to hone my skills some before I tackle that video

    To go cross grain you need to use the 2 nicker blades in.

    • @justplanefun
      @justplanefun  Год назад +1

      Even with the nicker, I haven’t had any luck cutting a clean line. I’d love to see video of someone pulling it off with a plain No50

    great video, thanks! i got a #50 recently and bought a depthstop and cutters from you. you sent me a long depthstop(that's all you had iirc), what's the difference in use? also the long depthstop is not parallel to the skate, is that an issue?

    I have a no 50 that came with a 1/8 and 3/16 straight, non beading cutter. But theyre to narrow and the plane wont grip them. Am I missing a part or is there some other trick to using them? possible using another cutter like a shim? thanks.

    Did you replaye your No. 50?I am considering doing so to mu #45, which is a mess. I know the collectors will wince at the idea, but mine is a user and I woild like to renew the plating, which is worn away in many places.

    Should be a nicker on the skate before the blade for cross grain work..

    • @justplanefun
      @justplanefun  2 года назад

      The nicker will help give the user a clean edge on the inside of the cut, but it won’t prevent tearout over the rest of the bead
