KORRA vs. AANG: Media CAN'T QUIT Making Strawman Arguments Over CARTOONS?!

  • It must be a slow news week, as the media keeps doubling down on The Legend of Korra vs. Avatar: The Last Airbender. The latest strawman article is that everyone calls Korra a "MarySue" (do they REALLY?) and that sexism is why Avatar fans hate the show. Couldn't possibly be because it's BORING, could it?

The last Airbender had a writer who understood religion and theology. Crafting the narrative to identify the Avatar as a higher being who took mortal form, and trapped himself within the mortal world to alleviate mortal suffering, never again being able to go home...
Korra says the Avatar is a loser guy who took bending from turtles and disrupted good vs evil, before absorbing good and becoming the Avatar? Just... how? How do you flip the table on your own IP?

And I don’t think people understand but the point of her character IN BOOK ONE was supposed to be cocky, bratty, and attitudinal for her character arc. That’s like complaining how obsessed and evil Zuko was in book one. They both were made the way they were to pave their character growth throughout the story. Korra grew as an avatar and character. She went from a full of herself avatar who believed stopping criminals was all it took and became a respectable avatar who initiates and strives for peace, and uses her bending to help retain the peace and stop people who a hungry for power or their twisted ideals. Korra and Zuko arcs aren’t that similar correct but she does still have one of her own that was handled pretty well.

She was a little kid when she basically had water, fire and earth bending down pat, screaming: "I'M THE AVATAR! YOU GOTTA DEAL WITH IT!" This was when the Order of the White Lotus were still looking for her. They didn't even test her to tell her she was the avatar and she figured out how to bend the other elements on her own.
Aang was 12 and at least truly mastered his own element but had not been able to bend any other element. Even before he ran off they had only just told him he had to master the other elements to fight the fire nation, not when he spent any time with Boomy did he learn earth bending, not waterbending when he would visit the poles to go penguin sledding or fire bending with the friends he said he had in the fire nation. Not from what we see him straight out the ice Berg at least.
Using the "Avatar" card explain a toddler bending 3 elements out the gate when it took three seasons for the last one to master the three with training and teachers is some cosmic level bs lazy writing.

    • @kevinsantos5050
      @kevinsantos5050 4 года назад +39

That's exactly the point of korra she was neutered by the white lotus instead of having her journey like all other avatars
Also she didn't mastered 3 elements when she was a toddler she was able to bend 3 elements but it took her until her teens to master them, even though she was proficient in those 3 she didn't gad real hand to hand combat until she arrived to republic city.
She is a completely different person than Aang and that's okay
She was raised in a relative peaceful time thanks to Aang.
But as accomplished Aang was the figure of the Avatar got institutionalized specially in Republic city, long gone where the days when most of the cities were small towns with little population isolated from one another.
She was an Avatar in a Time where the Avatar might not be necessary and that her action cause big consequences.
She is a hot headed and hormonal teen bound to make mistakes with incredibly amount of power with a lot of other ppl trying to shape it in its ideal instead for what she is.
She is no Aang who was an air nomad monk that trained his whole life to be the lovable kids
Most of Korra's training was focused in combat because of the Red Lotus threat which also prevented her to haver her journey to other lands to truly grow as a proper avatar
But that doesn't make the show bad just makes it different
And being different is not a bad thing.
You are entitled to your opinion if you think the show is bad thats good.
But hating on a show cuz you don't like it is just dumb

Yeah and I get it was meant to be funny and show how aggressive she is, but the problem is it was done horribly. Sometimes subtle
Legit most avatar fans will admit the quality of writing for Korra was not up to snuff like Aang's story, mostly because the showrunners were the idea guys and the head writer and his crew made it work. Without the latter the former floundered. That's not to say there weren't solid ideas in the story, but they were handled horribly. Zaheer should have been the big bad of the series with Season 1 teasing the return of Airbenders outright through another method, something to do with the Lion Turtles (and spirit-bending), and the focus being more on the Airbenders. This would have allowed for the idea of the Spirit World to better come in to play, and could have had the next three seasons explore the Spirits and Spiritbending more sensibly if that was their ultimate goal. At the end of the day it felt to villain of the season instead of this ominous build-up.
Plus it would have been more interesting if not scary or sensible to have an Airbender who has some version of Blood Bending (Cause blood carries oxygen) and the ability to Fly, to show yeah there's a reason Air Nomads did their best to be pacifists.

Some avatars are just naturally gifted in some areas. Aang was able to water and fire bend with barely any instruction. If the Munk’s would have told Aang he was the avatar at a younger age, he probably would have learned more. He was held back by Munk Kiatso who wanted to give him a normal childhood. In LoK, Korra was raised by the White Lotus and trained in combat more intensely than Aang. 17 years is more time than Aang got before he defeated the fire lord. Korra’s aggressive personality helps her combat but hurts her patience which is key in to air bending and unlocking the spiritual side of the avatar. She has to calm down and it takes her until half way through the show to enter the sprit world which is something Aang did multiple times when 12 years old. Because ATLA already went through bending training, LoK decided to focus more on Korra’s character flaws instead which makes her unique.

It would’ve been cool to see an Avatar that unintentionally causes the world to plunge into turmoil and darkness through their own inaction or unwillingness to face up to the legacy of Aang. It could’ve been a fun time, Korra could have been more of go with the flow Avatar, traveling around just like Aang only she’s even more spastic and even more of a wanderer who just as wants to enjoy themselves and avoid the responsibilities of being the Avatar.

As someone who is a fan of both shows, I typically don’t try and compare the two because I think at the end of the day their completely different shows with different goals in their story and writing. ATLA is a classic epic fantasy, an overarching plot of unquestionable good vs complete evil, with some amazing side stories and characters. Looking back really reminds me of some of my favorite Shonen Jump titles in terms of similarity (like naruto).
Korra I think is best looked at as a series of vignettes, where the main topic is that sometimes life isn’t all that black and white, and sometimes dreams can look very different then reality. 2 of the 4 seasons the primary antagonists were people korra knew and trusted/respected, while another theme was korra having to come to terms with being the avatar being more than just kicking-ass and punching bad guys like she thought it would be growing up.

Guess what, even though she knew three elements she spent an ADDITIONAL 13 years before she was considered mastered in it and she could even learn airbending on the first try. Aang learned them in one summer. So no she wasn’t handed it, an avatar can be talented but people are using the term Mary Sue incorrectly because neither Aang or Korra are one
She also got punished for her brash actions such as getting arrested for stopping criminals which she thought the avatar was supposed to do, which she later learned its about bringing peace and retaining it and she lost a lot of fights and had to work for her victories. She is not a Mary Sue
Her only Mary Sue moment was getting her bending back from the past lives. And yes aang isn’t a Mary Sue either, but if you call Korra one aang is too, and vice versus. Let’s not forget lion turtle GAVE him an out to his problem about killing the fire lord. He was HANDED the answer. That’s a Mary Sue moment and a deus ex machina because spiritual energy wasn’t far tapped. And aang blazed through his avatar state training in 48 hours.

I am done taking you seriously. You are a troll at this point. What do you not get that AANG had to LEARN everything and Korra did not!? Also he didn't blaze through his Avatar State training in 48 hours, what the heck are you talking about? You're just spitting up lies at this point. Aang struggled with the Avatar State throughout the entire show. Him being taught how to control and harness it when he had no idea to does not make him a Gary Stu. Korra just having it with no explanation and being able to control it without fail DOES make her a Mary Sue.
Seriously, the fact that you used the turtle as your final defense showed your hand. It's not a Royal Flush, it's a fumble.

    • @terrakage4462
      @terrakage4462 4 года назад

Simpleton Apollo omg lmao, NO, the lion turtle was only know previously from ONE picture. During the time Aang was contemplating killing the firelord to end the war and wanted to find a way to do it without killing. Instead of facing his problem and questioning his morality head on, the lion turtle gave him an easy out. And again.
And Korra not learning a thing is a lie, not only has she spent 13 years NOT one summer master only 3 of the elements. She spent her life suffering from consequences of not serving her role as avatar properly and learned from each mistake she made to become one of the most spiritual avatars and one of the wisest. Aang didn’t struggle with learning the avatar state, he blazed through the chakras within a day, we aren’t counting the ones triggered by intense emotions. While Aang opened his chakra in max one day. Korra has to defeat ancient dark deity and save the world from 10,000 years of darkness, after restoring the air nomads. And after wards since she is technically the first avatar of the new cycle she could go into it easier. All the while when she couldn’t she was poisoned into it while the antagonists actively tried to kill her in it while she was poisoned and restrained to end the cycle. Coolest part was with her own strength and no past lives, she broke PLATINUM chain and fought to keep the cycle going and prevailed. And THEN she had to face her kidnapper and torturer to reconnect with ravaa so she could go into the avatar state freely again. So I’m not spitting bullshit, that’s what happened, Aang didn’t struggle learning the avatar state, every time he was faced with a chakra he got through it within 2-5 minutes which supposedly takes weeks to do. He only failed because he a duty to save his friends and couldn’t pick the avatar state over katara. Those other times were all moments when Aang had trouble controlling himself in the avatar state because he was blinded by rage, sadness, or confusion. It wasn’t a problem of getting into it, is was the control part. But guru tried to get him to activate the avatar state when he wants, and he actually did it in the battle with Zuko and azula, but azula sniped him with lightning. So no he was basically handed the avatar state and still got shut down.

Korra was a forced shallow character. She had everything handed to her including having a family, and yet very little in terms of personal ambition to develop on. She seemed to get more hostile with each season, and remained generally unlikeable in personality and activity abusing her power until the last season which by then made it too late to start liking her. I was satisfied seeing her get traumatized, and by the end was just glad it was finally over.
And again, I was not surprised she turned into a lesbian. I called it from the start.
Aang lost everything flung into a world he no longer recognized being the last of his culture. He endured a lot of hardship to gain all the power and wisdom he would need to restore balance to the world again. He earned his support. Would’ve been nice if his story went on just a little longer. That’s a real achievement unlike Korra with a limited and unremarkable cast.

Aang had a personal problem with firebending cause he hurt katara when trying to learn it too early-it wasn't because of difficulty-in fact earthbending was the one he had the hardest time with because his personality didnt mesh well with the concept AND its the opposite to his element in the blueprint of benders Water-Earth-Fire -Air. A waterbender would have a hard time bending fire-earthbender with air-fire with water-and air with earth.
That's another problem with legend of korra-the more you thought about avatar the last airbender-the more you were rewarded-the more you think about legend of Korra-the more plotholes you find-the more you are punished-korra should have either had a hard time with firebending because its opposite of water or due to her free spirited personality-airbending should have come naturally AND waterbending should have been difficult for her not being able to release her fear of lack of control-which would have been very interesting for her character considering she would have been born a waterbender first and foremost which if she were bullied for not being able to waterbend then accidentally firebend-it would show why she holds being the avatar in such high regard with such an ego after being bullied for not being able to waterbend.

A lot of people conflate the Mary Sue argument being that it's a character who's perfect in every single way with no flaws. Wall that is one of the main criteria is, that's not technically what a Mary Sue is.
A Mary Sue is a character whom the story and universe will revolve around, ass opposed to them being a character in that story. They're a character who will accomplish all their tasks, will be idolized, get what they want, and overcome their adversities with little to no conflict or effort, to the point the story will even bend to the will of the Mary Sue character to make her look good.
This includes but is not limited to...
Characters acting out of character by either behaving unfairly cruel to them, just to be shown up by them in the end, or immediately praising her and integrating them into their group even though they've done little to nothing to earn such praise & trust. The story breaking its established world building rules and narrative to glorify the Mary Sue character. The Mary Sue character immediately learning, acquiring, or being discovered to have a powerful or unique skill-set or ability with little to no training or effort to master. a previously shown intellectual in calculating antagonist, suddenly making an idiotic mistake, just to better glorify the Mary Sue character so they can defeat him/her. The Mary Sue character always being right, even when they're wrong or acts rude or disrespectful and has no sympathy, and/or the characters who critique her will immediately be proven wrong. Winning the affection of a love interest who they have little to no chemistry with, and vice versa. Etc...

Definatly does NOT fit korra then outside the first half of season 1. she is arrogant at first, explained as excitement to start doing her job as avatar later, forma meaningful bonds with others(despite that arrogance), gets called out on it alot. specially by her airbending teacher. can beat enemies using her style of bending(in which isnt necessarily good in certain situations that i see, example being she heavily uses fire with earth inbetween. when air or her own native element would work better in some situatuons) she gets terrified when her bending could get taken away and has nightmares, gets her ass handed to her in pro bending until she gets used to it. gets beaten by amon and loses her bending. gains airbending from a back to the wall moment(much like aang with earthbending). finally beats amon by catching him by surprise. gets depressed at being only able to airbend now. and connects with aangs spirit. who gives her bending back.
this is juat the firat season. little goes her way. and the world doesnt bend to her will. she seems just a very talented bender(normal for avatars) with arrogance and recklessness issues which get fixed later. she also later tempers her aggression(albeit when it's actually the right way to go) abd almost wins if not for ptsd hitting her during the fight.

A teenager with PTSD almost wipes out a civilian village because they're aligned with the nation who killed his family. There's tons of "grown up" themes and content in The Last Air Bender. Well I can explain why she isn't a mary sue better.
One she was forced to train since she was 5-6 years old til she was 16-17 years old. She was able to master 3 bendings but couldnt master air bending which made her doubt herself a lot, and even learning 3 bendings she was still terrified by the main villain. She couldn't open the Avatar state.
I'll give the last episode of season 1. But I think the reason they gave her back her powers was because they already had a journey where the avatar only had air bending.
Seasons 3-4 she couldn't handle her own PTSD for so long, she felt helpless, she wasn't able to do anything at all. But at the end she was able to over come her pain and actually defeat the villain of season 4.
Season 2 was actually bad, I like seeing the first avatar, but everything else was eh.
When you read the avatar comics, or watch (if they did make another avatar) any avatar show, remember don't compare them aang. Theyre not supposed to be Aang, they are their own person.

Instead of doing a remake for the original, which is already loved by most people, they should focus on remaking this series so they can correct its many flaws, though I would personally prefer it if they just ignored this one and created a completely new story to continue the saga, but in order for that to happen the people responsible for the show's many shortcomings would have to admit that it's not as good as the original and that they made mistakes and seeing how these so called "journalists" have reacted I doubt that's gonna happen anytime soon.

This. So much goddamn This. I actually like TLOK for what it was, but it was nowhere NEAR as good as ATLA and it shows. I think they threw around a whole lot of very interesting ideas and plots that sometimes went well together (Earth Kingdom ultranationalism, the effects of the Hundred Years of colonization, Anti-Bender sentiment, tech development, heck, even Anti-God Vaatu), but just weren't put together well.
And you can see that the show was originally meant to run for far less than it did. Because unlike the tight-as-a-turnip plotting on ATLA where there was scarcely an episode or line out of place, you just SEE how they weren't planning the different stories or ideas out at the same time. Ask yourself: what would Amon have thought of the Earth Queen? Or the Lotus? Why was Vaatu the second arc villain, meaning the story had nowhere else to go but down?
And I could go on. A reboot I think is something that would really, really benefit Korra. But I also think it's probably the one thing that will not happen.

It's just a little sad that over the years, even though I wasn't a fan of ATLA when it first came out, Nickelodeon's bad decisions, lack of faith in the franchise and the departure of some of the people that were involved in the making of the original have kept it from reaching its full potential, which could be on par with Anime, Marvel, heck if put into the right hands it could even reach Star Wars or LOTR in terms of worldbuilding and storytelling.

Yet quite the contrary, most of the series centers itself on Korra struggling."
Actually, the conclusion to season 1 is a complete arse-pull. She acquires airbending out of nowhere, immediately demonstrates the wrong technique, showing that she still hasn't learned, and Amon's entire rebellion is smacked down by a handwave contrivance. Season 2 ends with an arse-pull as she just gets a burst of power without any build-up from the plot prior.
She is still something of a Mary Sue, even though the show makes a big deal out of how much she 'struggles'. She shows incredibly poor character and for some reason, everyone puts up with her. She keeps making the same mistakes over and over again, but the universe bends over backwards to try and bail her out of it.
ATLOK wasn't really that bad, but it would've been infinitely better if it didn't have Korra in it. The supporting cast is overall pretty wonderful, it's just Korra that is an absolute pain in the neck whose character arc doesn't resolve properly. From what I recall, the moment where she threatens Khuvira's husband with separation, all the way at the end of the last season, is the first time Korra actually takes an approach that isn't "I punch it with my fists!", and since her arc should've been about learning to balance brute force with nuance, tactics, and careful considerations of morality, that is WAY too late. This is pretty much my argument for why I'm tepid on Korra. It was fine years ago when I was watching it, Like it was entertaining, the focus being on different villains each season instead of one big bad was ok. Now though years later this is the difference between the two: I could still tell someone the story of ATLA. The big battles, the quite moments, I might not get it perfect but I can tell the story in a fitting manner. For Korra this is the best I can do:
she shows up in a city, does some sports, masters Airbending, beats the bad guys, finds out her uncle is evil, does some spirit stuff, beats the bad guys, recruits some new Airbenders, gets poisoned, beats the bad guys, does some underground fights, meets Toph who proceeds to force her on a journey of self rediscovery after explaining how she(Toph) managed to expand her abilities to the point that she can sense every living being on the planet and has effectively become the most powerful person on the planet while reminding the audience of her impish and irreverent nature while also demonstrating the wisdom she has gained through her experiences before fully healing Korra and sending her off to beat the bad guys, Korra and Asami kiss.
That's literally all I got and more than half of it is actually about Toph. So I liked Korra, but it just wasn't as memorable as ATLA.
TL;DR: ATLA had more impact than Korra.

She’s somewhat a Mary Sue, Aang had to actually master all the elements except Airbending because he was already an Air Bender. For the sake of the show he had to be because he was the last Airbender. Korra on the other hand as a toddler ran into a room bending three elements at once. No, effort no training. She just had them from the start. Instead of spending several seasons growing and training, she remained stagnant and unlikeable. There wasn’t much left for her character to do so she wasn’t able to grow as a person. The horrible part was since she peaked so early in her power she got tossed around like a rag doll by nearly every person that fought her. She’s not a complete Mary Sue, but the way she was written prevented her character from getting better over time like everyone else on the show. Season 1 was just okay. Season 2 was awful and only got worse. Season 3 was maybe a little better then the first. Season 4 felt tacked on kind of like the whole show.

      @terrakage4462 4 года назад +1

Ok firstly Korra didn’t master the elements until 13 years after she discovered she could bend 3. Which in retrospect is abusive because she was in isolation only mainly training to bend 3 elements over the course of her entire life not really having anybody to be around other than family and masters. So no that’s completely wrong, it doesn’t make her a Mary Sue to be talented at a young age, if that does then aang is a Mary Sue for being the youngest master of airbending. So this comment is blatantly false. Aang learned 3 elements in one summer and already master one, Korra learned 3 over the course of 13 YEARS. And still didn’t know airbending.
As for her character arc, she did grow as a character. I don’t see why people ignore the fact her character was made cocky, bratty, attitudinal, and stuck up on purpose in book one so that she can have a character arc. That’s the equivalent of complaining Sokka is sexist at the start and just changed over time. Or being upset Zuko was so obsessed and evil just to end up being good. She isn’t a Mary Sue. The only Marie Sue moment she had was the past lives giving her bending back from Amon. Aang also had one, the lion turtle. He ran into a dilemma about killing the fire lord, and was GIVEN an easy answer and put. It was a deus ex machina. Even if the the lion turtle was established in the the library. Nothing was said, and no lore of it was explained. Aang only mention how cool it looked. Not info on it at all, he asks the turtle what he should do and he was GIVEN energy bending. All because you have something from the start doesn’t mean you are a pro. All because you can kick doesn’t make you a lick boxer does it
Season one was really good. A blood bender as villain who goal was to bring equality between benders and non benders but using terrorism as a means to do it and being a bender himself.
Season to was eh, I’ll give you that, but it does provide more lore to the avatar cycle , and nothing said in the book is retconned. Also Korra saved the world from 10,000 years of darkness even though she lost the connections
Book 3 was amazing, the premise of an anti team avatar with a main villain who has studied the air nomads for his whole life, and knows how to end the avatar cycle and almost succeeds is fucking cool. He blonde what to do and how to do it. He was an advocate for freedom but the way he goes about it is through killing and dismantling governments. And by doing so would only bring chaos.
Book 4 was amazing as well Kuvira because of the events of book 3 was able to rise, having a noble goal of reuniting the earth kingdom but she did it by military force wanting complete. And even when she succeeded she became crazed for power and attempted to continue her imperialization.
All the while throughout Korra is going through heartache, poisoning, torture, ptsd, deaths, feeling helpless, losing the only thing that gave her an identity for a while meaning she believed she failed as an avatar and now no one would ever even acknowledge her anymore because in her isolation she only saw herself as an avatar needing to stop evil, not at all thinking about peace, and she was isolated for 13 years with no friends except naga.

Draconshot lava is a sub bending of earth, no animal could teach lava, that’s like asking metalbenders to learn from animals.
Lava bending is also extremely rare, you have to vibrate the rock you are bending so fast but the molecules that it generates enough heat to become molten. There are only 2 known lava benders in existence in korra

Korra is set in the 1920s with modern cityscapes and rule of law. IMO bending power is scaled down to fit a modern kickboxing style and be like a gun vs Traditional Martial Arts and cannon fire in medieval war time. Korra starts cocky and quick to anger but she learns humility during the later seasons with my ranking of 3, 4, 1, and 2 being the worst. ATLA and TLoK are not the same show. _ The creator of TLAB knew they had 3 seasons so they can plan everything around it:
+ Most of the episode is focused on characters and setting with a few plot focused episodes. All building up to ONE FINAL villain: Ozai. The longer a status-quo lasted the more impact full it is when it's changed
+ Since the characters are kids, their romantic subplot is still platonic enough to be shown on a kid show.
+ Ang started the journey only knows Air Bending and learn the rest on his journey from his FRIENDS. -> Constant progression
=> The build up is very well execute. Except the SUDDEN Energy Bending ass-pull power given by a new character who was only introduced at the last minute, in the last 3 episodes (to avoid having your HERO kill someone in a CHILDREN show). So when the few important events happened to change the status quo, it's very impact full and all it's ideas and concepts are fully explored. All the characters are developed
_ The creator of Korra didn't know how many episode they would have(they were only told to continue to the next season if this one is successful):
+ Most episode is focuses on plot to end the story as quick as possible in this season then had to (even faster) made up new conflicts, stories, characters and villains when the next season is green-lit. And the plots are more complex, the themes are heavier than in TLAB
+ Korra tried to go with the mature romance rout with its almost-adult characters BUT Korra is still a KID show so it can't go all the way(sex, puberty, future planing, gender identities,... are important aspects in grown up relationships especially a LGBT one).
+ Korra mastered most of the abilities needed for each seasons at the beginning of those seasons and only has to learn 1 new thing from her VILLAINS(a very interesting idea). -> So for the rest of that arc the creators kept erasing her abilities so she can re-learn it again(Amon erased her 3 Elements, Unalaq took her Raava, Red Lotus poisoned her,...).-> Progress, stop, regress then progress again felt like padding
=> The story is messy, not as much build up (especially the LGBT romance); most the characters, aspects of he setting & ideas don't get fully explored or utilized to their full potential(the Normal-Bender classism theme is almost forgotten after SS1, most of the intelligent spirits stop appearing after SS2,...). A bigger cast but only some developed(Marco is not one of them even though he's one of the most important characters)
    * Korra still has a lot of talents and good ideas behind so it's still okay-good maybe? If they were given a head-up on how much time and resources they actually had, I'm pretty sure the show would have been as good if not better then TLAB. But alas we may never know.
