  • The Korra vs. Aang debate rages on! For some reason the media will not let Korra just fade away and continues to defend it. The latest defense is that Korra is annoying because... she's a brown woman?! Yeah, and it's GOOD that she's obnoxious because something something strong indigenous female hero or something.

I saw someone who said people were sexist for hating Korra but not Zuko, despite them both being assholes.
Zuko's father was a genocidal autocrat, who flame broiled his son's face, and was willing to kill him until his wife intervenes.
Korra grew up in a loving home.
These two are similar, but they came from different places, and Zuko grows so much more.

    • @stellatuslupuscanis7481
      @stellatuslupuscanis7481 3 года назад +182

Not to mention the fact from Zuko’s point of view, his mother - the only person in his life (apart from Iroh) who showed him any love - abruptly absconded without reason (admittedly, the reason was to save Zuko from being killed by Ozai under Azulon’s orders, but IIRC he didn’t know that), meaning he was raised by his monster of a father who clearly favoured Azula, who herself was frequently malicious and abusive to Zuko, and who constantly outshone him in firebending, and didn’t hide that fact either.
And the fact that Zuko’s reason for trying to find Aang was to restore his personal honour, not to support his father’s ambitions for world-domination.
All things considered, Zuko turned out very well, even before his redemption arc. What’s Korra’s excuse?
Not to mention the fact that Zuko starts off as the antagonist, and yet by episode 3, we understand his motives and actually root for him to a certain extent regarding his feud with Admiral Zhao.
Korra, on the other hand, is the protagonist, and yet despite there being many opportunities to make her more likeable or at least tame her horrendous ego, the show passed them up, and the results speak for themselves.

Zuko was also the antagonist for the heroes, not THE hero. Having a bad guy be a jerk is way more palatable than the main hero. It's the same problem with the recent Xmen and Ms. Marvel titles, having your heroes acting like and sometimes worse than the villains is a big turn off.

I'd argue that the comparison is unfair to Korra. She was hidden away from the world by the white lotus who wanted to keep her safe and that's why she lacks a lot of important social skills that Aang had at a younger age. And I'd say Korra does not go through less growth than Zuko even though much of her growth happens in the second half of the series.

The SJWs totally see the rest of the world through the lense of the US society. Regarding Frozen and its depiction of the Sámi people I saw SJWs write about how "the Sámi have been oppressed by the Europeans". I just lost all my words and even now it's hard to find them. I'm an ethnic Finn from Finland so I get it I know more about the actual history of the various native peoples of Fenno-Scandia than some North American university student or whatever, but come on.
The Sámi are one of the OG Europeans who likely rode out the Ice Age in an unglaciated refugia *north* of the Scandinavian Ice Shield, as opposed to the Indo-Europeans and us Finno-Ugrians who rode it out south of the ice, in modern Ukraine/Russia. To disqualify them as Europeans just because they held onto the hunter-gatherer lifestyle and shamanism the longest is disrespectful and frankly bigoted - you're assuming "European" means "someone with perceived higher culture".

While I do agree with you on your points I like to look at things differently if you take in the fact that she was trained by masters in the south pole she had no chance to grow because everything came to her and everyone praised her for her abilities from a very young age and that lead to her being who she is. While yes she is annoying I would not call her the worst avatar yes she makes mistakes but in the end figures it out albeit with alot of help but its better than running from a 100 year war, just saying.

    1. Going. “Wait, I recognize this, have we seen this? We have seen this episode before! I remember this part!”
Turns out we watched the entire thing before, forgot everything, and watched it again thinking we never saw it. Funny thing, after watching it twice I still can’t tell you what it’s about.
    2. Going “oh look Kora had a problem, cried about it, then someone else came in a gave her the answer AGAIN! Seriously EVERY issue she faced she went pouty, then someone else came in with a special move for her, or told her what to do. Then there was no reflection or self enlightenment over it. She NEVER had to figure things out for herself or grow as a person!

I hated the radical changes of the world that turned it from fantasy Asia to fantasy America, stealing the appeal and Westernizing something that didn't need it (honestly pretty imperialistic of the writers). Season 2 purposefully destroyed Korra and Mako's relationship in a way that makes sense for the character. Korra and Asami repaired their relationship in season 3 and got closer in season 4. It wasn't really romantic until the end. She didn’t develop after season 2. Season 4 was a repeat of season 1 but with a giant robot. Season 3 was interesting because of the idea of airbenders coming back for odd reasons. Seasons of lore from the avatar world was destroyed in season 2. Catering to shippers with no real story set up for it. Toph’s family tree.
Did this writer forget how Aang (an airbender) was raised differently from Korra (a waterbender)? They come from two different backgrounds and time periods.

Um, no. It was clearly stated in the A:TLAB universe that it was the ELEMENT opposite to them because of the bending style. Water fluid and calm vs Fire wild and chaotic. Earth steady and unyielding vs Air evasive and flowing.
The Elements and the Benders/Citizens of that Element were heavily based on martial arts that closely resembled them. Yes there was mixing as we saw with Iroh’s lightning blocking technique, things like mud, sand, and swamp bending, and some other stuff, but the style was always based on that Element’s art. Growing up as a Water Bender (and should NOT have been told she was the Avatar before 16) Korra would have learned the moves of Water Benders and if Katara did teach her at any point, she would have learned the North technique that suffered almost no outside influence (because Katara was the only living Southern bender besides Hama at this point) along with some tricks Katara picked up along the way. Being Aang’s teacher, wife and the mother of an Airbender, Katara would also know how close Air and Water were on the cycle and what their commonalities were. Korra definitely would have better luck with Air over Fire.

Vegeta is extremely prideful and arrogant, yes, but it's a very restrained arrogance. He'll talk down to an enemy, he'll mock and demean them, but he normally doesn't go around tooting his own horn. Likewise Endeavor doesn't go around boasting, and just obliterates whatever is standing in his way before moving on.
Both of them are treated with no small amount of awe and fear, rather than being described as annoying or a pain. In comparison, Bakugo has the respect of his friends, sure, but Joe Average on the street doesn't exactly have a reason to like him at all.
It's like if you met someone unpleasant, and the person's friend comes up and assures you, "He's actually pretty nice when you get to know him," you can retort, "But I don't want to know him. He's an asshole."

Aang was obnoxious and annoying too, at least for most of Book 1, and then off and on in Books 2 and 3. The difference between Aang and Kora is that Aang gradually matured over the course of his run as the Avatar, while Korra remained obnoxious and annoying for most of her Seasons while only maturing a little bit by the end. It really has very little (if at all) to do with race/ethnicity/gender/etc., and more to do with individual's personality, willingness to eventually be a functioning, well-mannered adult someday, and (in this case) their own, personal understanding of their duties and what is expected of them as their world's Avatar!

Let's be real, people only praise Avatar because it looks good among the other terrible Western cartoons. If it was an anime, it would barely be remembered nowadays.
Oh, and Korra is just bad.

These days I have absolutely zero interest in TLOK. Even back when it was airing, and I saw random viral threads on tumblr praising each new episode... I still didn't care all that much. It was the same praises every time: "ooh! Lesbian ship teasing!" "OOOH! PRETTY ANIMATION!" "OMG! I love Asami's 'baddest bitch in the room' look!" "AHHHHHH! KORRA'S MUSCLES!"
Almost nothing talking about moving character growth or epic story arcs. It was all about aesthetics and appearance. And being a sequel series, it had a similar plot surrounding the main character being the avatar and the responsibilities that come with it. I already saw that with ATLA! And by the end of the series... It was back to the aesthetics and virtue signaling, with more constant praising of the show's "lesbian representation".
I don't know which is worse. A show that has "representation" and feels the need to bring it up in-universe, or a fanbase that NEVER shuts up about it and uses it as a marketing ploy.

Korra doesn't bother me much. There's some problems I'm sure, but I think she's a decent successor in a fictional story that existed before her character. Makes sense since the show ended near the start of the SJW Woke rise which would explain that there were at least some people of talent during the shows run which CBR clearly lacks. Also Boruto as both a show & as a character were criticize and unlike Korra, he didn't have both the gender & race cards to use as a shield

she's an anti sue who fails at everything yet still comes out on top always because jinora or someone else bails her out AND SHE STILL STRUTS AROUND LIKE SHE WON.she never realizes that she got lucky and she should proably train more. she never acknowledges that she took the wrong side and hurt people she should have been helping and resolve to be less gullible. she never acknowledges that she mishandles a delicate situation and makes everything worse and resolve to be more diplomatic. and she makes the same mistakes over and over
aang made mistakes too but learned from them.

That's what makes her a Mary Sue in my opinion. It's not the abnormal amount of skills she has or her power levels but the fact that the world bends over backwards to put her on top. That she's in the right because the world makes a sharp u-turn to provide her the victory.

First impressions are very important, especially for a show. If your character pops up and the first thing they say is, "I'm the Avatar and you have to deal with it!", that's a bad sign to most viewers.

Katara was an 'ingenious woman' , she was a loving woman with strong motherly instincts. She was also one of the most powerful waterbenders not only capable of turning rain into ice in a second and beating Azula but even able to bloodbend opponents to a degree that it was downright overpowered if wasn't for the fact she didn't like using it.
Congratulations, you proved how bad you are at writing characters when you can't even use the previous series as a template, like GOT all over again.

  • @dreampiper

As a writer, I will say this...it’s okay to make a main character with glaring character flaws AS LONG AS they are treated as flaws and not just a strength of the character.
For example, Toph was an example of a strong female character who had some flaws. She was very independent at the beginning and didn’t like to rely on others because she didn’t want to appear as if she needed help. This was a flaw and they subsequently worked it out. Is she stil, sassy and a fan favorite? Yes. But that wouldn’t have been the case if she had appeared strong and cocky and not showed any moments of weakness or openness to others throughout its entirety.
Korra’s problems is that instead of addressing her flaws, the show dances around them. If she makes a mistake, it’s turned into a boon. If the causes a problems it’s turned into opportunities. If she appears unlikeable, it will be played off, by showing she isn’t the only one at fault. That’s why she is an unlikeable character.

I am not against annoying characters, after all, good-written characters are defined by their flaws as much as their strenghts. But what I hated is how the show doesn't allow Korra any growth. The situation like this: "Korra does some dumb shit and blames someone else for it- Korra and other characters fix the situation- Korra kinda calmes down but still doesn't aknowledge her mistakes- the show treats it like it all actually was other character's fault and Korra was right al along- exactly the same thing happens in the next episode." Add edgy pseudo-deep antagonists and boring and mundane setting (compared to ATLA) and you get a show that I stopped watching after the first season.

Aang showed growth, in his bending, his character, and it was literally him comming to terms with him being someone who's that important for the balance of the world. That is the whole point of the Avatar. Korra was just...bad. There was no growth in her character.
