14:00 you nailed it about transitions, you write some cool riffs but without those transitions between them it feels like riff salad. Another cool thing is if your verse riff had a lot of pedalling the low E note, make your chorus start on like a B power chord (7th fret E string) or some other chord in the key, really reinforces the fact it's a different section. This idea can be reversed of course, just finding ways to contrast verse and chorus is the basic theme. Could do it with different rhythms too and something called 'harmonic rhythm' which is just how fast the chords change. Changing mode/scale between sections is also highly effective. Like start in E minor then go to E phrygian... that's done a lot in metal too. Even though you only changing one note in the scale it has a huge change to the feel, and it's easy to remember cos it's only one note! Nice vid I been trying to get my metal rhythm chops back after exploring other genres for a while... my forearm hurts lol.
Thank you, dude. Those are some great points you made about changing keys....that make a huge difference because most metal bands play every song, every part in the same key!
Also with the palm muting if you feel your pressing too hard move your hand back toward the bridge and just try to see the range of mute tones you can get from fully muted completely over the strings back to the lightest mute you can get hand mostly on the bridge barely hanging past it
@@jasonstallworth hey great lesson also man I just got to where I'm writing all the parts for my songs drums guitars and vocals but im primarily a drummer been working on getting a good songwriting/recording process down so I've been practicing guitar more n more but I guess I'm more of a rythm guitarist atm but this is just what I need to break things up and add some flavor :b verry much appreciate your content
Dude... I've been practicing some of your tequniques... Was thinking "walking" notes just before you said it... Same for the alt picking hammer ons... Must say... I was playing a guitar solo, high gain, high distortion... And it freaking blew my mind... I didn't think I could play like that... Your tutorials are freaking awesome... I've already subscribed to your channel...
@ 7:45 ish When hitting the power chord in the different way 4 instead of 5 is that simply adding some dissonance into it or tension to the tone, and by doing this will it take you out of tune with others requiring the others to play the same notes respectfully so it doesnt sound..off?
I’m going out to the back yard and find the rock I was living under. This is 3 years old? And I’m just seeing this…damn backyard rock! Dude, this is GOLD! You wouldn’t happen to have a similar video of solos…for old dudes with carpal tunnel in both hands (me)…?
Thanks for the videos, kind sir. I'm a young guitar player that absolutly loves heavy metal and wanted to be able to write music of his own and even form a band and i have to say that your videos have been helping me a lot.
The teaching is quite good in showing difference in chord n pull off better than what I was shown back when I went for lessons but over time I got better figuring stuff out by listening to records paying close attention to what was going on in the song
I do have some more stuff coming, dude. And if you haven't already, go through my 30 Days of Metal Riffs! You can access the playlist here: www.jasonstallworth.com/metal-riffs/
Good stuff Jason, have some great ideas after this video. Thanks for that... Is around 5 minutes the same you did on the acoustic the other day?..... Also... Use sunscreen bro you look abit lobstery 🤣🤣
Yeah dude, that was the same riff! I think it's either the camera or iMovie filter making me look red in this. I always have a hat on if I'm in the pool or in the sun.
this is a great video I'm in college and to pass time I play my guitar and you my friend have made me more creative in my riff playing than any other guitar teacher. all around badass dude.
This is absolutely the best metal guitar channel I've come across. Underrated asf
Dude, thank you so much for that comment!
I agree 100%
Awesome tutorial, just what I'm needing now! I'm trying to muddle out my first song. Thank you!!
Yes!! Do it, dude!!

I was doing all the things but it sounded like jobberish because I wasn’t splitting up my ideas into sections. This was so helpful :D
Really glad to hear this helped! 🤘
Another great video Jason! Definitely gives me ideas for writing riffs in the future.
Awesome to hear that and thank you
So helpful. Thanks for this

Oh, great dude! Yeah, I aim to put 2-3 pieces of content out there each month!! Hopefully those tabs help!
Does pumping iron slow you down any ?
Not at all. If anything, it makes you better, in every way. It's a mindset shift that you gain. You go all-in, no matter what, no excuses.

Great tutorial! I was just about to get into writing a new riff for a demo track and this helped quite a bit.

It depends on what key you're playing in. Also, in this particular case I would not stay on those notes but move from that to a regular power chord

Do you mind if i use the 1st riff for a song?
Sure but I would encourage you to take the riff and add to it and make it your own. You may come up with something that sounds better!
@@jasonstallworth yeah like sorta mutate it in a way, big fan of you btw
Great motivation tips- been using these for a while and fun coming up with my own style and riffs.

Hey Jason how many tracks do you Normally use with EZ drummer when recording?
Just 1. There's no reason to use any more than that. The track should be in stereo and you can do anything in just that 1 track.
Thank you 🤘😎🤘
