    Canvas can be dyed but you need to leave it in longer than what the directions say. The Directions are for Cotton Clothes, not canvas. The Wash Cycle is just putting in water to "Rinse Out" the dye. The best way to dry it is literally to Hang/Air Dry it overnight. That way it soaks into the material. Once it's actually dyed, then you put it through the wash!
    Also, if you're going to "Paint" any kind of Fabric, you need to use a special kind of paint. Fabric Paint! It's a specific kind of paint that you can brush on if it's saturated enough but the ones in the bottle are the ones that you use to hand paint on things. IE, the Stars!
    Hope this helps!

    For the dye, one other thing to consider if you want a darker color is a longer dye step, leaving it in the dye longer can help darken it and absorb more into itself. A lot of dyes have different levels of effect.
    And for a LARP, you really want more basic clothes for it than you'd think, and think in layers of things with things close to your skin ought to be simpler and have multiples of to swap out while letting you reuse outer pieces.

    I was raised in the SCA (society for creative anachronism) and I cannot stress enough how important cloaks are. They’re blankets. They’re wind and rain protection. They can become a carrier for whatever you need. The cloak is to a LARPer or SCA person as a towel is to an intergalactic hitchhiker. Mine is fleece, because I have a family of six and wool is expensive lol

    • @AzraelThanatos
      @AzraelThanatos Месяц назад +1

      Blanket cloaks aren't that hard or expensive, but they don't look quite as good as a purpose made cloak. There are some decently priced wool blankets you can get...
      Mine, with a pennangular broach, was under $40 and could have gone to around $30 if I went to the military surplus store for the blanket (a friend of mine did a bit after I got mine from a camping store). You just don't want to use it if it's not cold because you will fry under it and it's heavy, so in warmer weather, well, other options are good.

    Hi ! girl who wears cloak on a daily basis and who made a few , I have some advice !
    For finishing your seam , zigzag stich on the edge or bias tape . Since your edge has already frayed I would maybe add bias tape anyway at least on the seam at your neck to add some reinforcement !
    For the dying , maybe the fiber content messed with the dye (if it's not a 100% a natural fiber) that or maybe because your fabric was natural/unbleached (I've dyed a coton before that just took very little of the dye ans it was tha natural/unbleached color)
    Also just wanted to add that I really enjoy your videos !

    • @AzraelThanatos
      @AzraelThanatos Месяц назад

      It might also have been the specifics of the canvas. Some of the dropcloths are treated to make them easy to clean and reuse, especially ones that might also be for covering furniture and similar

    • @KaijuRamen54
      @KaijuRamen54 Месяц назад

      I was wondering if it was unbleached and that might have been why she struggled. Maybe doing a bleach process first then dying it would help the fibers absorb the dye better?

    The struggles of the creative process, I know them well... As a person who has been making props for over 10 years now there is always the potential for an idea you have to just either completely fail or just not work as well as you would like... Such is the life of a maker. We live, we learn, we dust ourselves off(in my case more often than not, quite literally) and we try again. It's how we learn, and it's how we improve as I am certain you will continue to do. Keep on making and enjoy your LARP!

    Even if it didn't work out how you wanted to, it is still a very cool cloak. And maybe we can get a retry, improving on the things you learned.

    ok, Ive been sew for years so, I'm gonna give you some tips for sewing. If your seams are fraying then i recommend you do a Zig Zag stitch along the edge of the fabric. Then below the Zig Zag stitch you can sew a straight line stitch. and if you are still worried about the edges fraying then you can do another straight line stitch over the center of the Zig Zag stitch. (this is if you don't have an Overlocker) I really hope this helps you on your future projects. I love seeing all the things you create

    • @supremenain7006
      @supremenain7006 Месяц назад

      Or French seams. I tend to use that seam a lot (it’s boring and not as sturdy as a fell seam, but it hides all your raw edges !)

    You should clip the bottom off and make it a short cloak! I think that would be super cute! Also Rit has different types of dye for different types of fabrics. So make sure you are using the right one for the drop cloth.

    You and cloaks were made for each other--they suit you so well! You go together like peanut butter and jelly. Like mac and cheese. Like pineapple on pizza! (yeah, I said it!) You know those people that just fit the ...whimsy-core aesthetic? You should...because, it you! (I'm also super excited/weirdly proud for you to come up to Canada, for something that has nothing absolutely to do with me. Have fun!!)

    Usually when using fabric dye you can soak it multiple times to make the color darker.
    You could alternatively just lightly soak it in a black to make it darker

    I don't feel like it's a lost cause. You could always paint the stars on with fabric glue or rubber cement and craft "silver" leafing. Also if you use a silky material to line the inside of the cloak, you could not only hide they fraying edges, but also hide a more waterproof layer as an inner batting. Also, a dangling crystal chain would be so cool to hang from that center hoop. Keep on making! 👏
