In this video we are going to rebuild a Sanyo 20EZ monitor. This is the monitor you will find in most Nintendo Arcade games like Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Junior, Donkey Kong 3, Popeye, Mario Bros., Nintendo Vs. Unisystem and Dualsystem, R-Type, etc. It's widely used!
We will cover the following topics:
#1 - How to cap a Sanyo 20EZ monitor
#2 - How to solder and desolder
#3 - How to adjust the B+ to 108V DC on a Sanyo 20EZ Monitor
#4 - How to replace the HOT on a Sanyo 20EZ
#5 - How to remove the monitor from an arcade cabinet
#6 - Adjusting an arcade monitor
#7 - How to reflow solder on an arcade monitor
Some symptoms that your arcade monitor might need a cap kit include fold-over, jail bars, picture doesn't fill the screen, etc.

Good job , gotta love the Sanyo.
Just an fyi though, Bob Roberts Deluxe 20EZ Cao kit with audio caps does come with the 2 transistors. I have done 10 in the last 2 months and all the kits from Bob had them.
I just recently spent the last 4 months restoring a Nintendo Vs. Dual System cabinet all thanks to you. Not only were these videos crucial to the success of getting my cabinet up and running, but your site also contained all the reference literature I needed for future maintenance and upkeep. I gotta keep the wheels oiled and rolling so to speak. I want to thank you for doing what you're doing. You're helping keep this hobby alive and long live the arcade!
Hey John, Kudos on the PSA at the beginning on the dangerousness of working on a monitor! Now I need to watch the rest of the video.
That video was great and relaxing at the same time, your great at this stuff keep it up ur a good inspiration man
Yup, I watched every minute of it, as always! LOL I have to say, you're fearless my brother! I was cringing so many times while you were adjusting the pots on the PCB. You are a braver man than I sir! Great job as always, John!!
Hey John where did you get that shirt from with the Nintendo controllers in the front and in the back it says tech support something I want one I hope you start selling those shirts I like it
"John's Arcade: The Movie"
YESS!! THANK YOU JOHN! I have a Sanyo 20EZ was ABOUT to start recapping/repairing. Your timing for this video is impeccable! I've got my cap kit/flyback/hot from Bob Roberts ready to go. Thanks for the awesome vids man! You are also capping a Unisystem(Which I have). This is so great.
Great Video John, as always. What do you mean by rejouv, please? Cheers.
Our friendship was forged over a Sanyo EZ capping. :P
Hey John my name is Dane I want you to do a restoration I want you to do a Donkey Kong Cabaret or a cocktail cabinet
Great video John, but do you realize that you've said "BJ" nine times from 1:59:53 to 2:00:53 ?
That's once every 6.7 seconds for one minute !
What's it called again ? BeeJay ? lol !
BJ yes BJ! There it is right there. Can you guys see that? What I'm gonna do is come in with an aligator clip and I'm gonna hook it on to BJ! Just gonna watch where my hand goes. Let's gonna do this real quick and then pull away. Ahh. Ok, so BJ... it's right.. where the hell is it? Here. Can you guys see? It's so hard to find. It's so hard to see. It's right... Where is it? Right there. See that? THATS BJ!
LOL, and in soldering we also have a slang term called BJ... Bodge Job, when someone f's up their soldering and it's to big and or a cold solder joint, or worse, a ton of hot glue....
Hey John I want you to do a restoration of a Donkey Kong cocktail cabinet
My name is Dane I'm a true fan of yours
I want you to do a restoration of Donkey Kong on cocktail cabinet
Hey John I'm not only a Mario fan I'm a true fan of your show
Hey John my name is Dane I'm absolutely a Mario fan
Nail Polish Remover, which is VERY cheap, works better than Goo Gone. But clean it RIGHT AFTER using it. I use it to get sap off my car, which nothing else does a good job with. Nail Polish Remover gets sap, residue, etc. off in seconds. Seriously, John, give it a try
Great vid John! I've been wondering about those alignment tools (:
Careful. Meangreen is not like Simplegreen. Very aggressive and toxic. Wear gloves and a mask. It can strip colors and layers. Great video though. Would like to see more like this.
John by-pass that stupit inverter board, by running the video signal throw it just adds more components to lower the vides voltage signal ... i find its better to just plug directly in to the monitor :) (all that board for non inverted games anyhow
John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech Maybe you could help me with something: I am restoring a Donkey Kong Cocktail cab, What certain 13" monitor would work best with this cab? The Sanyo 20EZ? Or else? :)
My name is Dane I'm a true fan of you
Here is a more scientific way to adjust the chroma and brightness on a monitor using SMPTE bars. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_only_mode
Craftymech should def add SMPTE bars to his TPG.
Sweetness finally can rebuild my Sanyo monitors !!!
Hey John - I’ve also got this monitor in an Excitebike, except the green color is missing. It does need to be capped, but I heard you say there’s 3 sets of RGB spots on this setup. Where is the best place to check for this problem?
great video john and yes i watch every minute of it lol god i tell ya id love to stop by your basement you got alot of kool games id total play :)
Has anyone mentioned the wobbly table yet? :-)
utubepunk People who hate his wobbly table should buy him a new one.
What exactly happens if you haven't watched this video, and you plug that wire into a 120 v plug? Asking for a friend!
John: I've said it in a previous video, and I'm going to say it again here. Don't get rid of the dartboard. You've made it clear in the past that it's a loved part of your collection. I fear if you got rid of it, it'll be a decision that you'll regret.
John I'm a true fan of yours
My kit came with Resistors and 2 of them said r472, one was 33 ohms and the other 1 ohm. I didn't know the location and if it was a typo and the 33 ohm resistor has another location number if you know?
Hey John I want you to make new videos in the future
John. Why don't you back the camera/light up and then zoom in a tad?
You remind me of someone who could have been on g4 TV had it not bit the dust.
Thanks, man!
I've heard of places (Napa maybe) that can custom make spray paint.
fantastic job when i get working again i want to buy some arcades is there anyway in the future u could a vid on candy cabs from japan.
I always find it easier to just take the entire metal platter off, and then remove the metal lid from the bottom that protects the solder side. Takes less than a minute and goes back on just as quickly. No need to mess with all of the individual boards and wires. -jimbodeanny
Is that big 200v cap dangerous? The bigger the cap is the more scared I am to go near it
I just got the exact Phoenix that I played as a kid in a bowling alley I think the monitor is fried where would I look to find a used one
Hey John, Is the Nintendo cab going to be a Wild Gunman from Back to the Future 2?
In regards to paint matching, for the jump bug, can you use a close color gloss paint, then use a matte clear coat to knock down the gloss? Is that too many steps?
My monitor slowly went completely dark, do you think it has a bad cap. I just did a kit like a year ago.
Hey John I want you to do a restoration video of Donkey Kong cocktail cabinet
Hey John I want you to do a restoration of Donkey Kong cocktail cabinet
John I'm a true fan of yours
Hey John I want you to choose between a Donkey Kong Cabaret or the cocktail cabinet
It is hard to see the right colors to adjust the monitor. Is there a way to run test pattern? that would help ALOT!!
Try Royal Blue on that cab John. Looks like the same colours as the football team i support.
Ironically, I just picked up a dedicated vs, Playchoice last night. Perfect timing.
The danger of adjusting the horizontal +B in HOT, is that if the pot is scratcky/dirty you can really send peaks to the horizontal output transistor and burn the transistor. I had destroyed some perfectly working transistors that way. So, your advice of do it when turned off is the best advice for everybody.
My Donkey kong machine has a flickering screen. Thinking about trying this.
I am getting jail bars on my pcb, but that is on my arcade monitor and when i hook it up to an lcd monitor via cga to vga converter. Does anyone know what might be wrong with my board?
Did you resolve the jail bars I have them too.
Hey john are these the same monitors used in a dual monitor Playchoice 10???
John, the filter on the light makes the picture look great. It seems like we are at the table with you.
Have you ever considered getting a die cart or something similar for putting your monitors on when you are working on them and testing them at the game, rather than using a chair? It would be more sturdy and have less chance of the monitor falling off.
Woah, 2.5h, need to grab a beer and some snacks then...
Thank you for putting this up, just getting started on a Sanyo shortly.
Restoration Dig Dug cocktail cabinet
Great video. Watched whole video.. what type of solder you use?
Man.. Crazy long video. This one is cool for people who want to fix their Nintendo monitors but damn this is like as long as a movie you see in the movie theaters.
This is great timing John! I am rebuilding 2 of these. For my DKjr and Mario Bros.
Arcade Hollywood Me too! I wonder what those transistors are...
B. Ouellet Good question?!
We did not have those Nintendo games in Europe (at least I never seen one) are they just the 8Bit NES version or improved ?
No, the Vs versions are mostly all a little different. the Pc-10 was the same as NES.
John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech I though the VS. also had the NES CPU and 2C03 PPUs in them, the only difference being the games were chipsets rather than on cart-style daughterboards. I think a couple of VS. games have been hacked for NES use (palette corrections ans such) and that there's a Famicom/Red Tent adapter. Please correct me if I'm wrong, though.
You converting this cab for Brofest? ;)
I did a cap kit on this monitor's little brother, the Sanyo 18-Z2AB, as found in the DK Jr cocktail table, and it worked perfectly. This video was super helpful, thank you so much!
If anyone else is ever going to do this on a 18-Z2AB I recommend putting on the crocodile clips on BJ before you install the board again. It's virtually impossible to put it on there otherwise.
the 20EZ is not that EZ to do a cap kit ?
oh boy i need to do my Mario Bros.
Thank you for taking the time to make this video. It helped me a lot
you never use solder wick?
Love the long vids!
Must also mention about when you are freaking out due to the false electric shock... I cried of laughter in a burst so even the missus woke up... Man, that felt good! It was a really good laugh, even so much needed! Thanks John! :D
i got my cup of coffee with milk (a couple of them) and my cookies and watched the entire thing easily. :)
Help John!! I messed with that b+ in an attempt to make my screen clearer and now its just a rippley mess and that adjuster seems loose. Any suggestions how to approach this?
That pot can go bad. Bob Roberts sells new ones.
John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech Thanks!!!!
Looking for that TNT visit! Keep it up John and let's see you break that Donkey Kong score, too. I'm at about 200,000 and I want to see you get past that.
So what are those those transistors? I'm about to do a cap kit too.
Would like to see a side-by-side, split screen comparison of before and after......so we can see the differences; 2.5 hrs later, I can't remember ;)
Love your description. In this monitor we are going to rebuild a Sanyo 20EZ monitor. Monitorception going on there! Great vid big fan of yours!
I know it's a old video, but thanks, I'm brand new to arcade repair and got a VS. Mario with foldover on the monitor, your video gave me the conference to repair it.
Restoring my first game now (DK Jr) and the monitor is the last thing I need to do, so this video is incredibly helpful. Keep it up!
Your videos are awesome. In fact this one it was the longest I've ever seen. ;)
Keep going with the good work, John. ;)
Cheers.
I have this cabinet but I have jail bars mildly showing. Any ideas? I had a friend recap it last year but I would recap it if that is the issue.
+theboy181 If you turn down the flyback a little does it fix it?
+John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech
I have turned every pot except b+. I think it's cap related however there is a post on this video where another person claimed that he used a different monitor(LCD) and the jail bars still existed.
Like I said my buddy claimed he recapped it for me.
Thanks Jonhy Nice Phat Video !
i watched the whole thing. i usually run them in the background whole i'm playing destiny. these are always fun to watch, straight up. kind of hope i can learn to do this shit myself one of these days.
Love the T shirt john 😎
John can you give us a webpage or email address for Ethen's cap shop?
Thanks.
John's arcade forums
A friend of mine converted an old junk arcade cabinet into a pretty cool TV thing . I think it was a paperboy cabinet that was intact but all the game hardware inside was gone
John I'm a true fan of your show I am a true Mario fan
2 and a half hours, I need to grab a beer
Just notice your shirt lol nintendo tech support nice
I like your transition music.
Thank You for showing how to cap a sanyo ez look's like a long process.
About to do my first re-cap on one of these (Donkey Kong Jr., then Donkey Kong after that). Your video is my study guide. =} Monitor should be dry now from cleaning it w/"Krud Kutter" and hosing it off out back yesterday. Wish me luck, and thank you for (all of) the great video(s)!!! My kid loves your videos too. Cheers!
+thedarkener good luck!
Good luck!
WD-40 works great for removing old decal adhesive
John Miller it smells though, and the wood absorbs it
What are those transistors? I'm about to recap! :)
Nice video sir!
John, where are you ??? Missing your vids... :-(
Soon! :)
John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech JOHN!!! Where's your videos man. Miss my john arcade fix. Hopefully 3 videos to make up for it:) If you're sick? Get better. Should have a I'm sick 2 second video. With a sad face.
Come on John you know you're going to turn that into a Mr fix it wreck it Ralph
Wrong cabinet. :)
John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech Will you eventually make a Wreck It Ralph?
LORDMETAL1 Donkey Kong cab for those :)
How heavy is the monitor? Seems like you gave it a lift?
not too bad. Just awkward.
What does a typical stand-up cabinet weigh? Fully functional.. I dont have a big car - so im thinking of shipping cost etc..
Not too long John. I loved the detail.
Well done! :D
another monitor video? Zzzz zzz
sonicase Veeeeeeery important in the arcade hobby. Unless you go LCD... :/
