Thought on this issue. What if someone were to try and attempt to log in to your account while you're already logged in? Would it create a disconnect if they are seeing you signed in at two different locations? Just a thought on the issue that could be looked into, since most logins are done via e-mails connected to Wizards' accounts. They may be able to do it without even knowing the password, just enough to disrupt your service on a second computer.

I've had QuitQrying as an opponent in on ranked, they had a decent field and had said good game... We were both at low life totals and I had dropped a pride mate last turn and I had a Linden on the field. I swung all out which made it so my pride mate would hit for death but blocking the pride mate and not blocking another creature would be death as well. Their timer popped up and then I got a network error message and then it popped up stating it was a draw. So I think there is a way to force a network error to prevent a loss and to force a victory.

I experienced the same game conclusion "draw" when playing ranked some player whose name I don't remember. He was getting a beating with my mono green proliferate and as he went down to 2 hp I passed the turn to his 5th or 6th and his timer started... nothing happened for minutes. All of a sudden the network error message popped up and when I dismissed it the game concluded into a draw. I did get that feeling of something fishy going on but I kept playing and didn't think more of it until I just saw this video.

Something like this happened a few days ago. The game was going my way then suddenly hung for ten minutes until I got fed up and exited. My first instinct was some kind of cheating because the timing of the game glitching out like that was just too useful for my opponent. A while later I wrote it off as a glitch and figured I assumed cheating out of frustration. Seems my initial reaction could be on to something.

Not an exploit folks. This is the effect of a TCP stack overflow in Arena. It's caused by bad programming, possibly inept and incompetent programming, but it's not an exploit. It happened shortly after the Drawn from Dreams was cast and the player was effectively disconnected from that point onwards until they closed the client (resulting in the OS clearing the MTGA junk from the TCP stack). This is different from pulling out the network cable or disconnecting the modem, which would result in a "destination unreachable" ICMP response. In this case, messages simply stop getting sent out, thus why the client responds differently. It's one of many many bugs in the game, but it's not caused by anything the opponent intentionally did.

I’ve had the same happen to me. I’ve also had multiple games where:
    1. I draw a game ending card, and as soon as I spend the mana to play it, I get a network error.
    2. I draw a full play set of random cards, and choosing to mulligan results in drawing 3 of the same card instead of 4, AND less lands.
    3. I draw the final combo piece that would totally change the direction of the game, and my opponent immediately quits the game-and there would be no indication they would lose (they still have 15-20 life, part of their combo in play already, etc.).

See my other comment, if you can find it, but sometimes I play on a slow laptop and if I click resign (sometimes I have to try to resign multiple times) it takes a second or two to take effect. Since the game is autopassing through the phases, the resignation doesn't actually take effect till they draw their card. I'm not saying that this type of cheating is impossible, but I'm 100% certain that my explanation can happen, because it happens to me on a semi-regular basis when playing on my laptop. If they have been playing slow the whole game, this would be my guess as to the explanation.

4:46 To answer your question, since you had no possible responses during the turn Drawn from Dreams was cast, all priorities were passed. The turn ended and began your next turn. At this point your time out was used and your turn was passed. Simply put, though it looks like it's going from your opponent's turn 5 to your opponent's turn 6 it's actually going from your turn 5 to your opponent's turn 6.

@@lalilulelolilo I think the point trying to be made is that this isn't a random occurence. It seems to be somewhat patterned with the fact that when it does that it bugs the game out into making it look like you DC'ed. When in reality it didn't and its still going meaning that your opponet gains an advantge until the player comes back. Of course the solution is to immeditally reboot the game when you see that happen and hope that not many turns passed. Yet if its true that they can force your game into doing that, then thats a very scummy pratice to even use period.

I had this "crash and cheat" tactic happen to me a few times a year ago, then it stopped for a long time, then it started again recently. Between turns 1 and 3, the client will mysteriously crash during the opponent's turn. I quickly log back in and see the opponent has played additional lands and spells. My turn is skipped and/or cards are discarded due to hand size. I usually catch the crash quickly and return to the game, so there should be plenty of time for me to get in before the timer depletes. I also noticed that when I get back in the game, all emotes are bugged and disabled. It's weird. If it's not a hack, then it's the oddest, most random thing I've experienced in a game...

  • @Aaron-wv5si

I have a possible explanation for, what looks to be, people resigning as they see the card you drew. I'm one of those players who, even if I know I'm going to lose, I still like to play out my turn. Happens a lot with daily bonuses. Like, if my daily bonus is to attack with X number of creatures, I'm still going to do that even if I know I have no chance of winning. So I play out my turn and as soon as I click my last action I try to resign. I play on a laptop sometimes and it isn't the fastest. Sometimes it takes a second or two to take effect, or I have to try to resign multiple times because my computer is slow. Because the game is auto-passing through the phases, If their are no holds placed on phases or neither players has an instant to play, sometimes the resign (that I pressed a couple seconds ago) actually takes effect, you guessed it, right after they draw their card. This only happens on my laptop. My desktop is decently speedy and I've never had to happen while playing on that.
Now if you are keeping track of it, and it always happens with the same players, and it only happens when you draw good cards, then maybe it actually is cheating. But if you are keeping good track of it, and the resignation comes after your draw step (but doesn't seem to have a strong correlation with the strength of the card you drew) then it might just be that the player has a slow computer.

What happened to me is when I was about to win the game (declaring attackers), I get the network error message and behind the prompt the game ends suddenly and it says "Draw". I've had several occasions against several players I played against several times in ranked, and when I had lethal, suddenly a "network error" appeared, and Arena automatically restarted, and when I got back into the match, the opponents got an answer somehow every time, and the game was prolongued, but I still managed to win. That was pre-rotation btw. But there was two times that I have played against a guy, and when I got lethal on board, the "network error" message apeared, I reloaded Arena, and both times, against the same guy, the game just got completely restarted and I lost due to realy bad draws while he drew perfectly both games. Also, there was a time when in middle of a game an "An update for Arena is avaivable, please restart Arena" message popped out, causing me to restart Arena (since I had no other option), only so that it turns out that there is no update for Arena.

The way that the game boots you for inactivity works like this: If you run out three timers, without gaining an additional timer, and you have no timers remaining it boots you. This can happen all in one turn, if you have 2 or more extra timers; Or over the course of a couple turns, if you have 1 or 0 timers built up. Obviously, if you have no timers and run out the clock it passes the turn, if the boot conditions are not met.

I’ve noticed while playing several games, the game will progress at a relatively normal pace, when my opponent is in serious jeopardy the pace will just stop, not a big deal they could just be thinking, while waiting for their play I’ll notice their hand blink a few times and out of nowhere they will have the answer. I don’t see myself as a poor sport, I give a “good game” every time, even when I lose, but I’ve noticed it quite a bit recently. I really like MTGA and will continue to play win/lose, even against cheaters. I would like to know if this is something others have seen as well.

not getting the connection lost/reconnect screen happens when there is a problem on the opponents side or you have a massive lag spike. i have a bad computer so this has happened to me quite a few time so i know a bit about it. ive had it happen to me, also when you have one 'timeout' left, you actually have three. you have the free 'timeout', you have the warning 'timeout' which happened when your out of hourglasses, then you have the kick 'timeout' which is orange. the normal and warning 'timeouts' pass phases but the kick one forces you to concede. so otherwise he played a completely fair game, you just don't experience this problem often enough to know whats going on. when half the time you try and play your computer semi freezes on you (animations and everything still happens but you dont change phases if you hover over a card it outlines it but it doesnt 'enlarge' it and you cant click on anything) you figure out these things pretty fast. maybe try playing with a friend and having them disconnect and then see what happens, it should play out as youve described. so yes he COULD have done it on purpose, i just dont see the benifit other than confusing players with good internet and computers who dont often run into this problem.

This happens to me constantly but I admit my connection isn't the best because my router is downstairs but I still show a strong connection but not full. But out of nowhere I get these exact prompts conveniently when I'm winning.

I play from China, that means the connection to the server is very unstable, this is normal for me, whenever I see this I just restart the game, I don't think he is actually doing something weird, you just had connection problems. The fact that you did a network test just means that the connection problem was resolved, something that is wrong with the game is that when it gives that error even if the connection is re-established the game doesn't progress normally. The reconnect option does not always appear.

Hey Des, have you looked at the output logs from that particular game to see if there's anything fishy in the error output?? Just curious because I checked the logs from some of my recent "suspicious" games, and I noticed there were a lot of weird errors like something was interfering with the certain server references (like error returning card image during my draw step). Maybe something to look at.

Similar thing happened to me. He could have ended me multiple turns prior but let me live. I get the strength to take him to negative 4 does not block any of the attacks and the game continues. He is then able to heal back into the positive and despite having multiple creatures he only attacks with one which I block. I then attack him with everything that I had which again he does not block the game still continues with him at negative 15. Next turn he attacks me with a few creatures and takes me down to 0 which results in me losing.

I don't remember the exact cards, but, I remember an instance a couple months ago when my opponent could of gone for the win but then didn't and waited a few turns perfectly playing around the exact cards in my hand that would have stopped them. It was blatantly obvious that they knew exactly what was in my hand cause it was like 5 cards. It was something like they had two creatures could swing with one for lethal (other summoning sick) but I had life gain in hand and had haste creature plus removal spell for blocker in hand to kill them so if they attacked I actually had lethal, so they left both creatures back.

It does seem like some type of packet hack. Sending a bad packet to your client to make it have a temporary bug that makes it assume it has an error but it doesnt, causing some type of error in the code not allowing you to follow up with the reconnect prompt. It would also make sense for data miners to know every id of each card in the game and packet sniff to cheat and know their opponents hand if the data cannot be encrypted.

I shit you not, the exact same thing has happened to me, although I'm not sure if it was the same player. I was playing Phoenix Dredge and the very turn I milled my two last phoenixes, I was disconected from the game. When I logged in again, I was disconected once more. After getting back on the game once again, my opponent roped me and conceded.
I will, from now on, keep track of this kind of issue. Thanks for the heads up.

You disconnected. He used his card and cast manipulation and you used a timeout and then came back to the game. He never stalled after playing the card, your client just disconnected, right after he played dreams. The bug is it didn't boot you after disconnecting.

I dont think theres any cheating here. For the connection issues causing a loss, if you notice the connection message briefly flash on the screen or sudden, unusual lack of action quickly alt-f4 and relaunch the game. It forces you to reconnect to the game before you lose via weird timeout

I feel like the 'nonsensical concede after you draw the perfect card' thing happens far too often to be natural. I was running loads of wishboard decks in best of one ranked, pre-rotation, and during the grind to mythic in Bo1 it was especially noticeable. Mastermind's acquisition was the card that prompted it the most, with sudden concede after I draw it but before I even go to play it, while I'm in a losing board state otherwise. That email Wizards sent out with Eldraine release claims I have nearly 5,000 matches played, so this could be a matter of long-time players simple remembering oddities over time, since it certainly isn't an 'every game' thing, but it has seemed more common in recent months. And of course, most cheaters would be smart enough to wait for your bomb to resolve before they concede, if they wanted to act natural. That does make me wonder if, in my noticing it way more when I hopped on Bo1, if those aren't just the more impatient cheaters trying to churn out their rank as fast as possible.

Dumb theory, but I wonder if they send some kind of packet that causes a drop, then they send out something that reconnects but slip a separate IP they control as their opponent, maybe via spoofed IP. Which would explain how they know your hand and how you went from turn 3 to turn 6 or 7 in under a minute.

Hey Dez sorry so long but I wanted to be as descriptive as I could. Happened to me several times. I also have had cards enter and not trigger when no hushbringer or anything that would have prevented an effect from happening. Then yesterday I had someone play a knight of Autumn and it blew up my artifact, came down with 2 +1/+1 counters, and they gained 4 life. They had no other nonland permanents in play at the time and I had nothing that would allow them to choose more than one mode nor do I think there is a card that would allow you to get that effect. I do not record gameplay but I wish I did. I was winning 20 to 4 at the time with a mask of immolation and a chandra in play. Attack with the tokens and sac them to the mask = 4 points of damage. They play Knight of Autumn and I let it resolve. They get all 3 modes. Blow up the mask gain the life and put the counters on. My GF was right next to me, she had next game, she saw the whole thing. I dont know if it was a glitch but if it was it was a very timely glitch. I am platnum 1 so not even at the top. I have no idea how something like that could even be possible without some sort of code written in by cheaters and for cheaters. That card is such a toolbox that it would have helped them without having to cheat with it. Just blowing up the mask would have helped them. I cant stand the idea of a bunch of cheating a**holes writing backdoor "I cant lose because my pride wont let me" codes into Arena. And then either secretly using them or more likely secretly selling them to their scummy a**hole friends. Makes me sick. Again sorry so long.

I really really believe this is happening in many ways. I know that RNG (Random Number Generators) are not perfect. But I have gone against so many players, time and time again that have Perfect opening hands, and then pulls that mirror a perfect counter to my entire deck. Once or twice, I would not find too odd, just bad luck. But when its the same decks and its the same pulls again and again and the accounts are all "Name+Series of Numbers" and or names specifically being crude and rude ... It does make you feel the game is way to hackable.

This has always happened to me since the beta launch and still to this day. About 1 in every 4-5 games there are suspicious “disconnects” (also to note it’s never when I’m in a losing position, only when dominating or about to strike for the win) where I’m still connected to the net but cannot take any action
If it truly is just buggy servers and a ghetto client it would be helpful if there was a notification that let you know that the game has been disconnected, regardless of your actual network status. The hardest part about troubleshooting is that you don’t want to quit when you’re winning firstly and secondly people take ridiculous 5 minute turns even when there aren’t any connectivity problems lol so hard to tell when you disconnect
