In a past life I was a manager for a large automotive retail chain and I can say that is a professional level battery tutorial. And some excellent videography. Its good to see You are both healthy. The only plus to this pandemic is I am now getting weeks to the gallon of fuel mileage😭😭😭
Thank you J. G.! We appreciate the compliment. Initially, when checking out RUclips for a Promaster battery video I could not find any other complete videos on how to do this. We hope this video will help people save some cash in the future. That's funny you mention saving gas. Half our monthly expenses is fuel and we have also drove no where 😂
For anyone else watching this, be aware there is a little plug that you need to remove from the old battery for a vent hole---opposite of the one that connects to the plastic vent tube--you can just see it at @5:13 on the end of the battery. Take it out and use it on the new battery to plug that hole. This is most easily done before you drop the new one in! Thanks for the video.
David... Thank very much for your video. English it's not my language, so I don't have all the words to say how much you helped me. May God protect you, and yours dreams. Health and peace.
Hi Dave, I just had to install a new battery in my 2018 2500. The dealership wanted $350 for the battery and $150 to install before taxes. I declined, drove to Costco and bought a better battery for $198. Your excellent video walked me right through the install perfectly. Thank you so much for taking the time to make it. It really helped. Happy trails!
This is the best comment! We did this video because we had such a hard time finding a quality video to help us! When we bought our van we didn't even know where the battery was.
Great video. My Ram has a inverted plastic battery aligner on the bottom of the battery box so the battery can't move either way. I noticed my original battery was an 800 Amp while my new 4 year free replacement warranty from Walmart is a 900 CCA battery. It is the exact replacement. I also didn't have to remove the positive wire , only loosened clamp and the entire positive cluster came off together. Your video made the replacement very easy. My original battery was still working fine but is 5 years old so I just replaced it before it does go bad. There wasn't even dust In my battery box. Was just like new! Both batteries were identical. Cost 184 dollars at Walmart including all fees and taxes. This is in Florida. Original battery was mfg in Sept 26 2017 now is July 2022, old battery still good so that lasted very good.
Hate to say it but a good problem to have in your driveway and not out in the back country. That quick release is a nice feature! You made it look easy!
Thanks so much Dave. I followed your instructions and replaced my battery! Your video took the mystery out of all those wires on the positive terminal that allowed me to take on the project. Saved me a call for help!
I've watched other videos where you work on your promaster van. You are always very thorough... I've owned my Ram Promaster extended high roof 3500 self converted van for 5 years. It's time for a new battery. Good tips, too! Thanks for making this video.
You can double the views for all your Promaster maintenance videos by adding "Citroen Jumper / Peugeot Boxer / Fiat Ducato" to your titles, for the sake of your European fans, like me. Love your channel!
Thanks for the tip! We really appreciate your feedback. We did not even consider doing this! I will be working on fixing this ASAP! Thanks for watching!!
You saved us a lot of hassle in our work vehicle yesterday. No time between jobs to get us into the shop and the battery died on our last job, but we had the new one in the van and were able to change it in 20 minutes, thanks to the providence of finding your video. So many thanks!
Just changed out my original 2017 Promaster battery…. I used your video as a guide, worked out great! BUT, it took me just as long to get the little tube in after installing the battery…. It had never been installed in the first place 😊 thanks for all your”how to” videos they are a great help…
Thanks so much for the video! I was installing my DC/DC charger and could not figure out how to remove the positive bus bar from the battery. Saved me some head scratching for sure. Thanks again for the content.
Great video on how to replace the battery in the UKs best selling motorhome base vehicle. Nice to see they are also available in the USA . Thank you and all the best from the UK .
Thank you guys! Your video saved my ass quite literally. I could not figure out how to jump start it for one and for two I had no idea where the battery was to change it. I have a 2018 ProMaster and this video was awesome. Thanks a lot!
excellent how to video for anyone with a Promaster and it was good that it went dead at your brothers place and not out in the wilds you travel since it couldn't be jump started
Thank you! I actually keep things a little to clean and concise 😂 Carrie helps me elaborate some or it would be a 3 minute video with no personality. 😀
Thanks Dave; It was much easier than I thought with easy step by step instructions. The battery is heavy so I pulled it out while seating, better leverage. I did not have a Carrie to assist. Stay safe.
Thank you so much! We are on tour and while we could jump it to get to our first stop, the battery gave its last breath this morning.🪫😵 Luckily we had a hand cart and could walk to a Napa, and with your help we got it all going again to head to our next gig! 😅 Thank you again for your clear instruction and positive spirit! 💗
Thank you for having your wife video this instead of hand held solo. You both did a great job. Smiling all the way through, just as we will because now we know how to do it! God bless, stay safe! I only wonder why you didn't video putting the battery back in place? Even if it was hard to do, still would have liked to see it.
Wow, thanks so much. Now I know how to change the battery if I ever get my promaster dream van😊 I had no idea the battery was in the floor. I just assumed it was under the hood. Stay safe.
Hi thanks for the vid. 2 things, if the vehicle is fitted with an alarm the appropriate shutdown procedure should be followed. Mine is, alarm on/off then turn ignition on . Secondly, I put plastic bags on both terminal assemblies whilst they are off to ensure there is no chance of a short!!
Superb video Dave!! Very clear visuals and commentary! My van has only about 5K miles on it, and I'm pretty sure the battery is gone! Will be taking it in, under warranty. . . . but really appreciate seeing the process, location, and various hardware attachments! Next time around I will do my own job, using your video! Many thanks! - . . . a day later: cancelled my dealer repair, and did it myself! Saved a bunch of $$$!
Wow - an understandable explanation. Good Job! These days, typically "experts" explain things. The problem is that the "expert" is so engaged with the topic they cannot understand that the thing which they pass over because it is "obvious" is not obvious to most people. We used to have a profession called "technical writer" - I don't think they're around anymore. To bad.
Your how-to videos are always so thorough! I did not know the batteries in those are on the inside. Interesting. I have never changed a battery so this stuff is good to know. The quarter....what a great idea. Well done you guys!
Thank you Once again, I needed DIY advice & I saw your happy smile! What a relief! I needed help due to my bad back & sent the young man a link he was also impressed with the instruction
Thanks for doing these videos haven't got the van yet but it's always nice to learn something new I would have never thought there was that much involved and changing the battery but you make it look so simple thanks again looking forward to more maintenance videos
Thanks for saving me a lot of money.... with all the electronics above the positive lead it stopped me dead.... I thought no way can I change this battery it looks too complicated so I called the dealership they wanted $485.00 for OEM battery Plus 85 to install it 625.00 total ... I went to discount Auto 265.00 and put it in myself thanks to your video.... By the way nobody had them in stock I had to wait 3 days for the battery you would think it's a common battery but I have a Thor RIZE camper apparently it's a special battery ....😄😄😄😄
Thanks, Dave, for all your well-done and helpful videos. Here's a suggestion for a new one. I've had trouble with my battery running down while my 2019 Roadtrek Zion (built on a 2018 Promaster chassis) is in winter storage. Same problems you described here, flashing dash lights, engine won't start, key stuck in ignition. Sean at Roadtrek recommends disconnecting the battery if engine won't be started for two weeks or more. My Promaster has a quick disconnect on the negative side of the battery which requires no tools, just a gray plastic lever which you twist open to remove cable. Not sure yours has that (maybe a Roadtrek gizmo), but if not use a tool to remove negative cable. Only issues then will be that your Thule door step (if you have a Roadtrek) won't close without the battery, but not a big deal. You also won't be able to lock the passenger door using the key fob without the battery, but there is an easy manual method found at ruclips.net/video/7Hq4Dazcy3Y/видео.html that you could incorporate into your video. Good plan for long-term storage of a Promaster.
Very informative! Our 2017 Promaster Battery seems strong but here in Florida (on our little island) to get 4 years out of a battery is asking a lot! So I’m sure this is in my near future! That’s a big battery! Oh well! Thanks for sharing!
I need to wire in an auto shut off for our inverter. We charge our house battery when we drive from the vehicle battery. So when we forget to turn the inverter off it keeps on charging the house battery until it's dead. We have done this 2 or 3 times. Each time I am guessing takes one year off the battery 🤪 I am hoping your battery gives you 5 good years. I wonder if it's the heat/humidity there that shortens the battery life.
Dave, GREAT VIDEO MAN! Carrie doing a great job with the camera work too. I bought a 2018 Ford Transit High Top LWB back in October. I LOVE my van. However, Dodge got it right when it came to the battery placement. Ford went and put the battery under the driver seat. It's still very easy to replace. I just think Dodge put a little more thought into the placement of the battery. I would have rather had that space under the drivers seat for other things. As you are more aware than me, space in your van is extremely precious. Even if it is under the seat. Stay safe and be blessed, Big Silver Bear
Thank you! We definitely agree with how important space is. Most of our upgrades recently have been about more comfort and more room. 😀 I really want to hear the story on your profile name. Big Silver Bear. 😀
@@oneadVANtureatatime Thanks Dave. I named my channel Big Silver Bear because I deal and collect in silver and other precious metals. I have made a few dozen videos showcasing some finds that I acquire on and off line. I haven't had time to post more videos because business in the precious metals market has demanded more of my time. The movement on precious metals is very crazy right now with this whole Coronavirus thing. People are scrambling to put money in a safe haven. Silver is certainly the place to go at this present day. I watch you and Carrie (as well as a few others) to be able to escape the craziness of the world right now. You two do a FABULOUS JOB! I think you are helping people more than you know. Your content, quality, camera work and subject matter get better and better with each video. Be safe and be blessed, Big Silver Bear
Thanks for sharing this Dave!!! Really appreciate your "How To" videos!!! We'll be replacing our 2016 ProMaster 3500 extended diesel Chassis battery this year.
Dave is so good at these tutorials, always explains step by step so anyone can understand. I think he could get a job teaching automotive tips-oh yep that is what he is doing. Making informative YT videos! (And 💪 too!🙂) with s little help from Carrie’s steady camera hand! I never would have known the battery was under the floor. I’m hoping maybe someday somewhere I can impress some guy with my knowledge of a Dodge Promaster! 😉🤣 🚐
That's for sure and the battery is about twice the cost also. At least we can replace this battery without leaving it at a dealer and paying for the work.😀
Thank you! This was so clear and easy to follow. When I took the black plastic cover off of mine, there were no wires attached. Will you tell me what those wires go to in your van? I might be missing something that should be hooked up.
Thanks for this video Dave. I found it very interesting and informative, will now be proceeding with my battery change with a lot more confidence. I look forward to viewing the other videos on your channel. I completely understand that producing these videos does take a lot of work but rest assured they are appreciated. Once again, Thanks!
Thank you, Ron! We appreciate your kind words, these help us stay motivated when filming those how to videos. A 15-minute job will take about 4 hours to film and another 4 hours to edit.
Oh Geez Dave, this was an awesome video with excellent camera work (is there an echo). I saw this video some time ago and then did a search when it was time to do some battery work of my own. Thanks for your input keep up the great adventures
I am saving your Promaster maintenance videos to my phone for future reference. Hopefully, when the pandemic has passed and our own Promaster build is complete we too will take to the open road. Appreciate your careful and accurate videos. Two questions: 1. Are there no third party battery options or must you buy one from the dealership? 2. I noticed no extra wiring coming from the battery to an isolator to charge a battery bank or did I miss it?
Awesome! Thank you for the kind words. We did look at three other 3rd party batteries at the auto part store. The battery that was equivalent to the Mopar battery was more expensive.Good eyes on the no extra wires. We removed them for the video in order to not cause confusion. We have our inverter connected to the battery. We charge our house battery from this inverter while we are driving.
@@oneadVANtureatatime Thanks for the great video! Can you use that positive lead on top of the harness (13mm nut) to connect to an inverter/Dc2DC charger or best to connect to the battery post? Same with the Negative?
Congratulations on your 2019 Ram Promaster! Are you planning on building it out yourself? If you have any questions about the build, maintenance or vanlife, we love to be helpful and answer any questions we can. Take care and have a good night.
Is there any chance you could do a video about how/where you run your cables from your cabin batteries to your engine battery? For instance, I know I need to connect my B2B charger to the positive side of my engine battery, and also the negative buss bar needs to be grounded to the van chassis, as does the inverter. Every wiring diagrams says these things, but I have a hard time finding a video showing how it is done. Your tutorials are so easy to follow and I was hoping you might already have done one such as I am requesting. thanks for reading!
this reminds me of my dads old 1955 dodge 1/5 ton panel truck the 6 volt battery was at the same spot but had a nice drom on cover . unfortunately it was low compression and warn so in winter the 6 volt battery was not strong enough so he had a used 12v jumper battery . i really liked that truck but not old enough to drive he got a 65 Plymouth sw to replace it and sold the truck sine no place to keep it for 2 yrs when i got licensed . so i recently got a 21 premaster 1500 but had not found the battery yet tnx i need to tap battery to add 2 way radio to the van
Can you comment on the electrical? A battery tender is suggested for newer cars to prevent memory loss (abs, radio, dash settings...). How did the battery swap effect your van? Besides this question, your video has lifted my spirits since no auto parts store will touch the vans battery compartment.
Do you know what the reasoning is behind the vehicle keeping your key hostage when the battery is dead? Happened with a friends SUV last year. Really sucks if you have to go somewhere for help and can't lock the car if you don't have a spare key with you.
I got a replacement battery that says "exact match". It is an inch shorter between the terminals. It should still fit though right? The negative cable has some play.
Thanks, very well done and now I know what I am in for when my battery dies. One question, do you have a list of the tools that are needed to keep our Promaster's up and running?
@@oneadVANtureatatime we just got a 2019 zion srt and the battery needed replacing, had it done at the dealer under warranty, but I was curious how it was done. Did you have to get a jump? How would you do that?
Great question! If you pop the hood open look on the right-hand side for a plus sign. Flip the tab up and you will see a positive battery lead. You will see a negative post that is marked right next to your waist at the edge of the engine compartment. We use a Noco Genious battery jump starter right from there. Hope that helps, all send you a link for the Jumper.
Q: if u want to connect crocodile leads to battery for trickle charge maintenance of battery where do you clamp to on the pos and neg sides? Thanks for video.
Great video.... Thank you. I was wondering if there are other benefits to going to a dealer for a battery (e. vehicle warranty). Did you look around for an after market battery? Good advice on asking about recalls. I am a HAM Radio Operator and am in the process of rigging up my ProMaster for radio use and will be using a stand alone solar powered/charged 12 volt battery for power. I will be getting a battery that will be compatible with the vehicle so that if/when my vehicle battery fails I will have a replacement battery on board. Michael from Canada
We did shop around. We found 3 other batteries that would have worked. The aftermarket battery that was equivalent to the Mopar battery was slightly more expensive. I am not sure if it affects any of the vehicle warranties or not. I do like the idea of going to a dealership if the warranty needs to be honored. Year's back we had a auto parts store refuse to replace our defective car battery. Having a back up battery onboard is a smart move! We hope you're doing well up there in Canada. We love your country and can't wait to return. 😀
I have a video idea. If I recall correctly, you have a Berkey water filter system. Could you explain why and how you use your Berkey as well as how you always keep the filters primed so that they always work. I have my future Berkey for my van being used in my home. However, if I don't fill it frequently enough, the filters dry out and need to be primed again. Could you make a video with your take on how to keep such a precious tool operating at all times while on the road? Also, have you ever had trouble with the way you have the Berkey secured. I was thnking about going the same route with mine. Keep up the great vids. You two are a blessing and breath of fresh air. Be safe and be blessed, Big Silver Bear
All bout the Berkey is already on our Wednesday list 😀 We initially primed our Berkey filters in the kitchen sink and have not had any prime problems since. The bolt and nut through the 3/4 ” wall and the velcro have worked awesome, we do have a piece of foam between the lid and the cabinet to keep the lid from vibrating. I am not sure if we have had the filters dry out as we use this every day. We have cleaned the filters once and are due to clean them again soon. You have given us some good stuff to cover on the video, Thank You for the content idea and all your kind words. 😀
You make some of the best repair vidio's on youtube. Clear speaking, no shaking or waving of the camera that I hate. Thanks

Absolutely LOVE your how-to videos! Please keep them coming!
Thank you very much! We have more lined up and ready to film already. 😀
Thank you very much. Your video was a big help. It's nice of you to pass on the info!
Thank's Dave... I got a Ram Promaster too. Headed out Holloween 2020. C ya' on the roads. Happy & safe travels.
We are excited for you to hit the road in your Promaster! You are in for a really great time. We hope to see you on the road as well. 😀
Right on Toni! We had to make this video because when we first bought the van I couldn't even find the battery! 😂😂😂
@@oneadVANtureatatime you do a fabulous job explaining things in a way that is understandable!!!!
You can do it! I wish we made a video of the first time I was searching for the battery. You would have laughed very hard 😂😂😂
Great job! Coming up on 5 years on my original battery, so this is going to come in handy very soon. Thanks!
Great video Dave! We have not changed ours yet but your video will make it much easier! A lot more to it then the average car.
Everything is very clear! Thank you very much.
Top bloke well done, made it easy.
Excellent tutorial. 👍
Well done video,,,,,exactly what I needed to know!
Could you post pictures of the step you made for between the seats. Thanks. Really enjoy your videos
An important video. Love the how to's.
Thank you WVevie 😀
This is a very useful video. Thank you very much
i cant even get the battery off the far end , the one side seems fixed :/ and its under bonnet not under the floor
Thank you, you made this extremely easy!
Right on! We are happy to have helped. Thank you for watching.
Thanks for this, yes it does look very awkward getting the battery out without damaging cab les.
Nice work, thanks sharing and be so being thorough.
💪🏼👍🏼👊🏼🇺🇸🇺🇸
Man thanks so much for taking the effort to making and posting this video. The info you shared help me big time!!!!! Thanks again
Thanks Dave, excellent job.
My pleasure! I am glad you found this video helpful. 😀
Great guide and you were right taking it out was the worst part 🥵
Thank you very much for this very instructive video. Very helpful!👍
Thank you, Philippe! We enjoy being helpful. 😀
Thanks very much for this - just what I needed - super helpful !
Thank you for this video! So helpful!
Useful and helpful, thanks again
Great step by step video !!
Thank you very much for your kindness. This video is not getting many views yet but people like you commenting make it worth the time. 😀
@@oneadVANtureatatime This video will help me as I just purchased a 2019 Ram Promaster Van 159wb
Congratulations on your 2019 Ram Promaster! Are you planning on building it out yourself? If you have any questions about the build, maintenance or vanlife, we love to be helpful and answer any questions we can. Take care and have a good night.
@@oneadVANtureatatime Yes, Im planning on building it out myself. Thankyou
+Wendy Byrne hi Wendy! Please email us at oneadvantureatatime@yahoo.com
this reminds me of my dads old 1955 dodge 1/5 ton panel truck the 6 volt battery was at the same spot but had a nice drom on cover . unfortunately it was low compression and warn so in winter the 6 volt battery was not strong enough so he had a used 12v jumper battery . i really liked that truck but not old enough to drive he got a 65 Plymouth sw to replace it and sold the truck sine no place to keep it for 2 yrs when i got licensed . so i recently got a 21 premaster 1500 but had not found the battery yet tnx i need to tap battery to add 2 way radio to the van
Can you comment on the electrical? A battery tender is suggested for newer cars to prevent memory loss (abs, radio, dash settings...). How did the battery swap effect your van? Besides this question, your video has lifted my spirits since no auto parts store will touch the vans battery compartment.
Hi BasketThme! Sorry for the late response. The only thing I had to do was reset the clock. Our Promaster is a 2017.
Thanks man, super helpful 👍🏼
Do you know what the reasoning is behind the vehicle keeping your key hostage when the battery is dead? Happened with a friends SUV last year. Really sucks if you have to go somewhere for help and can't lock the car if you don't have a spare key with you.
Hi Eric. I have no idea why the key locks in the ignition. Initially I was confused and frustrated to say the least.
That was a really well done video, good job 👍👍
Thank you for your kind feedback! Take good care and have a fantastic day.

Congrats on your 2019 Zion! Those look awesome. Happy travels to you.
So happy this happen while ypu are standing still. Much easier to resolve.
Lou
That is for sure! Usually, we are out in the middle of nowhere. 🤪
Thank you. Very helpful.
Dave, you the man, gracias
Thank you! We are happy to be helpful. 👍
