- A highlight from the 40th anniversary celebrations "Re-Machined -- A Tribute To Deep Purple's Machine Head" is this specially recorded live performance of 'Highway Star' by Chickenfoot, an American rock supergroup consisting of former Van Halen members Sammy Hagar (vocals) and Michael Anthony (bass), solo artist Joe Satriani (guitar) and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith.
I am 67 years old, a Deep Purple fan since the 1970s and this cover of Highway Star is simply the best I ever heard. Just goddam amazing!
Yeah. It kicks ass.
Check out this cover. ruclips.net/video/VmAeuJ_gW1Q/видео.html
Agreed 👍
@@info2jake Yes, that was pretty awesome. I'm surprised I've never happened across that one.
Мне 58 и я тоже люблю ,Deep Purple..
A master class in rock musicianship..4 guys playing at a level very few musicians ever reach...Awesome version of a classic
Just 4 Guys that love Rock, AND are EXTREMELY talented….. doing what they do best!!!!!!!!
They're having a blast up there.
Such a shame the VH brothers couldn’t see the magic in the four horseman together. Sammy’s voice still rocks
🤘
We saw them in Tahoe fantastic show my girl bought a shirt. Then I lost her that year to covid God rest your soul...learning to fly..
WHAT A TOP TIER GROUP OF ROCK STARS!! Michael Anthony’s vocals are incredible!!!!
Backing vocals, no?
Absolute props to the way Joe nailed the keyboard solo. Amazing
Agree....I saw/heard that!
Yea he don’t get the credit he deserves right there
Never did I think Jon Lord could be duplicated on a guitar. I was very wrong.
I actually got into an internet spat about these guys playing this song. I said "There's no way to play it without the B-3."
I finally forced myself to listen, and boy was I wrong! Incredible version.
@@grantcheney5070
Well, I was a little dissappointed that he actually didnt sit down at home and nailed it..I am sure he could if he put in some effort.
Now he played like the first three notes and then mostly improvised. Then in the triad-arpeggios he plays a few chords correct but most wrong until he skips them and play something totally different til the end.
Michael Anthony is so underrated man... You here that guy screaming that intro? In his 60's and still has pipes like that... Damn!!
He's literally NOT underrated. He's VERY HIGHLY RATED. Can we PLEASE stop calling every goddamned thing "underrated"? If you like something, just say you like it
Underrated my ass
Fuck yes. To match Ian Gillian is priceless.
All these guys are rock vets, and millionaires, and to see/hear them together on the same stage for the simple rush of playing with one another is inspiring. This was 10 years ago, meaning Sammy was 65, Michael Anthony was 59, Joe Satriani was 57, and Chad Smith was 51. Unreal. What a performance!
I'm not a huge Red Hot Chilly Peppers fan but, Chad Smith is one of the absolute best Rock drummers of modern times. Chickenfoot was firing on all cylinders!!!!
I totally agree. RHCP are seriously overrated. Their songwriting is boring. Individually they are amazing.
Not really
I really don't know who is the better drummer, Chad Smith or Will Ferrell. They shoud have a drum-off! 😆
Subpar drummer
@@ImperialAerosolKid you're entitled to that opinion, but it's wrong
Sammy was 65 in this performance. Let that sink in a minute.. legend
Just as cr p as he ever was
Am a huge fan of DP and they do a decent job on their one
So what? He will never match the great David Lee Roth
Satriani also looks 30
Fair play 👍
4 old rockers going all out on a rock masterpiece, lovin' it!
Fact
Satriani is a beast, but what makes this cover rock so wild, really thump and jump, is Michael Anthony's ferociously tight bottom end grooving so hard with Chad's swinging beats. Anthony is the secret weapon that helped make Van Halen such an incredibly dynamic and rhythmic band. And what a voice!
Probably the best interpretation of this classic Purple song I've ever laid my ears on!
This version of "Highway Star" is as good as it gets. Like an avalanche rolling down a mountain, what drive and momentum.
These guys work well together.
Sammy is awesome but Chad Smith drives this song!!
Bunch of exibitionists putting a wall of heavy noise to impress . This thing misses the raw feel of real thing. This is not hitting my heart.
@@PlaviPD All this does is serve to show just how good Deep Purple were in 1972. This is just a loud noise, it totally misses out on the Lord Piace Blackmore triuverate and puts the focus on the vocals which with some exceptions Purple never were. Gillan himself said they were an instrumental band with vocal accompanimnet. This does not manage to replicate that. In short, its shit.

Michael Anthony is one of the most underrated musicians of rock'n'roll. He's fucking awsome and now joined a team that really appreciate him.
He isn't underrated to VH fans. We all know he is great.
Always been underated as a vocalist and bass player!!!
He was Van Halen's secret weapon.
Really? Bass players are a dime a dozen. Michael Anthony Sobolewski is working for UPS without knowing EVH.

Deep Purple is nothing more than a well behaved band. 1987 it was pretty much exactly the opposite.
i really like deep purple, but deep purple could not play it like chickenfoot, chickenfoot shows blackmore and lord how to play their song properly, just guitar, bass and drums, no organ nesessary :-D
I think we all realize now how great Michael Anthony is and how important he was to Van Halen’s success.
Everyone but Eddie
He had the backup harmonies that really helped Roth sound good.
@@NT-fo3me Yeah, Michael got totally rat-f*cked by Eddie. Publicly said Michael didn't know how to play bass and had to teach him all the VH songs, removed him from album covers and had Wolfgang photo-shopped in his place, etc. I mean, Jesus, talk about a "petty" fuck. SMH
@@Revolution1117 Yeah. Eddie's an asshole of the highest order. Saw Michael and Sammy on That Metal Show once. Sammy said something like 'Mikey's too polite and too classy to say anything negative about Eddie or Alex, but I'm not' and proceeded to lay into Eddie for all the shit he had to say and did to Mike. When Mike was given the chance to do the same he said he never wanted to say anything negative about his former bandmates or his time and work in Van Halen, that he loved every minute of it and was thankful for all those years. To me, Mike and Sammy are class acts all the way. Eddie is a POS.
@@NT-fo3me Yeah, Michael's definitely a class act. I've also heard Sammy rant about what a royal asshole Eddie is. If anyone, he would know.
Never heard another band cover this so good. Like the real thing but more power to it. Mind blowing.
My band tries, but we're not nearly as good as these guys. Our keys player does a great job on those John Lord parts though. ruclips.net/video/9FHixd3r-qo/видео.html
Michael Anthony's voice never ceases to amaze me. Absolutely fantastic.
Hagar n Anthony are the most Humble cats in the game.

They love to laugh and have a good time
What a lot of people might not realize is that Michael Anthony does some of the best harmony and background vocals in all of rock
+Rex Holes How is it that bass players get to play the lowest notes, and sing the highest notes too? I'm jealous. Yup. Michael nailed those harmonies.
Mike is the ultimate band mate. Plays in time, solid enough technically, hits the high notes, hits the high notes clean, and I have seen interviews with him where he seems like a laid back guy who would be easy to work with. EVH had it made and he's lucky Mike helped make that band one of the best hard rock acts ever.
Agree.
Who the hell DOESNT know that?
+Dan Matthews That comment resembles Geddy
Listen carefully to MA's bass lines. What an underrated bass player! These guys are so tight as a band but so relaxed at the same time. What a fun show to see.
Monster bassist! I was waiting to see the paint fall from the ceiling
He's never been underrated. Ever. Mikey is a Consummate player.
You got that right man. Totally underrated.
A 2 yr bass student can play this.. he is mediocre at best…
Eddie never wanted Michael to shine
Every single guy in this band just kicks ass! Legends!

Actually he hit em harder than Ian paice
He ain't no Ian Paice though
Nice drum monitor too. A real he-man rig. No sissy in-ears; loud, blazin' old skool kick drum though your guts.
Woopdie doo.
My Fave is him bangin' out the National Anthem at halfcourt as the poor kit is disintegrating before him- stunning!
JS redoing the keyboard solo is one of the better things I have ever seen on guitar……then you add in the insane screams by Sammy and Michael in the intro, and Sammy singing along note for note with the guitar solo…plus none of it would work without chads high power drumbeat…..it’s just a masterpiece pure and simple.
When you sit back and actually listen to these guys.... No one in the band looks at anyone else because they all KNOW that they are all there in the pocket on every song they play. The trust is there and something magical always emerges. Joe KNEW Mike was gonna be there, Mike KNEW that Chad was there... Like I said, magical. These 4 could play anything!

Total respect for Satriani. the guy is a Pro musician. He can play any style and he can also respect an amazing solo and do his best to bring it out. Amazing tone. amazing show :) Awesome!!!!
And I like how he was the only guitarist on stage that wasn't jealous of Alex Lifeson's solo when Rush was inducted. He was digging it.

mike anthony is just a killer... look at those constantly barraging thumping on his bass...hell run over you boy!!
Samuel Cole Agree....he was too good for VH....lol
Samuel Cole Listen to the original, or even the Made in Japan live version. Roger Glover is playing tunes all up and down the neck, playing about three times as many notes as Anthony does here.
gotham61 Roger Glover is one of my all time favourite Bass players ever period. I personally, was not making any comparisons to Micheal and Roger, just stating that in my opinion, Micheal Anthony never gets his due credit when it comes to the amazing Bass players down through Rock history. But yes gotham61 I have seen that original and agree that Glover is outstanding.........Cheers man !
Samuel Cole Because everyone wants the super player like Geddy Lee. When what Michael is, is an amazing rhythm Bass player. Super solid and in the pocket and that to me is more important and more impressive. With him back there, you never need a second guitarist because he can hold down that rhythm all day, every day. Then on top of it, his backing vocals and harmonizing are second to none. Great all around bandmate and player.
So Sammy is in his mid sixties here and is hitting the high notes in Highway Star. Dude is amazing.
josef mengele Sammy Hagar is not 87
@josef mengele Sammy Hager is 72 now, this video was uploaded in 2012, so he'd have been around 64 at the time this video was uploaded.
Let’s see DLR cover this.
@@TheDizzleHawke Tbf, in his prime I think DLR could have absolutely smashed Highway Star in his own style. I can imagine an early van halen cover of Highway Star being absolutely monstrous tbh. Now... not so much.
@@WillRock07 I should have said “let’s see DLR cover this in 2012.” Dave at his best was never even close to carrying Sammy’s jock strap.
That is amazing... Joe is playing the keyboard and guitar parts. No small feat to play Blackmore licks. Mike pulls double duty on bass and harmony, Sammy sounds great. What a great band. They can cover a lot of music.
Chad Smith plays so crisp and on point. Bravo
What a Rockin' Band ..!! This is the way to perform live .. ! Sammy Hagar , what a great vocalist , and the rest of the Band are pure talent ..!!

I'm very happy to see people recognizing how awesomely talented and in front of the mix Mike is. His voice is amazing. He definitely backed up Roth on a lot of his cool screams. So glad to see him playing regularly with Sammy. The whole band is great, obviously.
Being a male of a certain age group and being brought up with Deep Purple being one of my favourite bands, I have to say, this is brilliant! Superb musicianship and great talent!
Satch killed it as always. The guy is just phenomenal.
Joe Satriani playing John Lord's Hammond solo on the POG is friggin amazing 👍
I was typing a same comment. 😀.
It blows my mind that Satch isn't recognized more as a legend.
Paul Johnson I think it’s because Satriani never really wrote legendary songs like bands of purples caliber and of course sabbath and zeppelin just to name a few even though he has great songs and is a great guitarist.its a shame but people who know music know how great he is.
absolutly!
Yeah. Seriously
Michael Anthony's voice is still as amazing as ever. Most underrated signer there never was!!!! 🥰🥰🥰🥰
best than haggar im my opinion
Singer....???😒
Well a singer can keep a good voice their entire life if they take care of it. They usually ruin it by screaming and smoking. If a singer does not do these things, they can keep their voice sounding good until their last day usually. If they learn how to powersing, like the opera guys, etc, which is not screaming.
He gave VH's vocals a texture that really distinguished that band and he is solid on that bass.
@@williamworden3597 glad ya figured that brain teaser out
That solo by Joe is second to none! That is one badass dude right there
Best tribute of Highway Star I have listened to.

That was badass. Hands down one of the baddest jams. And chickenfoot killed it.
Hell Yeah!!!!! I'm 71 Still Rock n Roll!!!!!!! Rock n Roll is King 👑!!!!!!
Absolute best cover of a Deep Purple Classic! These guys are a Super-group! Rock on Chickenfoot!!!
This is what it looks like when you've come full circle. You start life as a musician, working hard to make money doing something you love, then you eventually end up with the money, and go back to focusing on the thing you actually love, making music and having fun doing it. These guys have all had the lime-light at some point, and they all still do, but they are at a stage in life where this magic moment in time to just take what they want, and sing it, tribute songs, cover songs, new songs, is finally fun again, and they don't have to care if it's a number 1 hit, or if it makes them a ton of money so they can pull off the next project or tour, etc. Music that is this much fun, thank God for that! I love it! Keep on rockin' you guys, always!
Myron Ens I like your perspective, these old Rockers are still doing what they love. Maybe one big difference now versus when they started out, that makes it more enjoyable, is they have roadies to load/unload all their gear before and after shows!! Carrying all that heavy equipment can take the fun out of anything.. :-)
Dude you completely summed up what every true rocker (I'm a guitar player singer) knows. Not all of them do it for the love of the magic. These guys do. Billy squire said, Let the magic of the moment say it all to me...
I am a drummer myself, and this, to me is what music is all about. I am not the greatest drummer out there, have lots to learn yet, but making music, and having fun doing it just feels right. And I think anyone doing the same knows when that mix and groove are there. When it's fun, who cares about how good you sound, or if you make a mistake. Just having fun. But seeing these guys, just wow. I love it!
What’s also great about this rendition? These four are enjoying every second performing it. 😎🥁🎸🎤
Simply outstanding 4 legends at the top of there game that my friends is music at its best
For me the greatest compliment to Deep Purple is the greatest rendition of their song Highway Star and Chicken foot just nailed it.
At 62 years of age, I must say, this is one of the BEST live performances I have ever seen. Joe was rocking that guitar! Many might remember, in the 70's, this song had an organ in it. Joe brought it in his guitar.! Sammy and Michael wailed on this like nobody's business. The band was tight and the audience was rocking! "I gave it a 10 because it had a good beat and was easy to dance to..." :-)
They did justice to a tough song. Michael Anthony was so integral to VH with his high vocals that they can't sound as good without him.
computarman Lol. VH is long dead my friend.
Loved Joe's "organ solo" @ 2:48 on the guitar. Great tone and use of effects.
Even BAD covers of this song set your hair on fire, and this is a SCREAMING cover. Holy crap, Sammy singing the harmonies to the guitar solo, Mikey doing the old Gillian scream. Holy fook this melted my brain.
These guys KILL this man! Im an old timer and Joe's playing on this and the keyboard parts, not to mention Mike's and Sammy's vocals, and his bass playing. Did I say anything about the heartbeat of Chad? DAMN! Killing it!
I was typing a same comment. 😀. How could Joe fulfill the song?😉.
Joe Satriani does both Blackmore's and John Lord's solo's, that's how damn good he is!!!
The man is not from this world
Eddie Van Halen does the who keyboards much better
Really amazing. How true. Great Satriani.
Lord and Blackmore, the masters of music
Actually it wasn't that good... Jon's solo is meant to be played in a Hammond. You can play the notes on a guitar but it doesn't sound like it should.
@doubleheadergr No shame there.Took Coverdale and Glen Hughes also.
Absolutely amazing. Joe kills the keyboard solo and then goes on to nail the rest. Stunning performance.
Thought he wouldn’t 🤪
Satriani is just absolutely amazing and a big shout out to Chad Smith on drums. I am in my late 60s and saw Deep Purple (whom I loved) perform this song live and honestly this is better and that takes some doing.
You're right, Ian Paice is a tough drummer to follow.
Chad is Average at Best ....Phillip Fish Fisher played on Mother's Milk for Chad was unable to play Taste the Pain ...
You forgot about the best of the band! Michael Anthony is a master.
No guitarist is going to sound better playing Highway Star than Richie Blackmore. On top of that the organ part was either under mixed or missing entirely.
Absolutely True. Better than Original Deep Purple rendition
Chad Smith should be arrested for the way he assaulted those drums! :)

Every time I watch this clip, I believe Sammy Hagar is a vocalist who is now in his 70's, can keep up with any of these singers who are decades younger. He is truly a living legend. And the rest of the band, the amount of talent they show is amazing. With Joe Satriani, who needs EVH? Van Halen needed Sammy more than he needed them.
Satriani really nailed that guitar solo from Highway Star. Big time the whole band Nailed it..
SICK!! Joe even played the keyboard part on the guitar too!!
Incredible.. Thinking back how amazing this song actually was back in the day .. Chicken foot did it true justice..
I suppose it's a way to pay tribute to Jon Lord, who would cover the guitar parts that Joe couldn't play when he first joined Purple. The apprentice bringing it back to the Master. :)
He absolutely destroyed this song!
You can see and feel that this real friendship and they have fun. 100% of adrenalin.
