This was the most helpful discussion for me as someone who haven't read the book yet (but soon will). Thank you for your insight, great reaction.

Re: not being able to distinguish prescient vision from reality, there is actually a part of Dune Messiah where Paul is blinded but can still "see" and interact with people perfectly normally because he follows the prescient vision he has. The Fremen around him are of course terrified of this, saying things like "he sees without eyes!" but it becomes another part of his legend.
The next book has a Guild Navigator as a major, important character, so I doubt Denis will get away with not having them on screen in that one. And Messiah is actually a much shorter book than the first Dune, only being about half as long and not having any appendices- so adapting it into just one movie about as long as these two Dune parts should be possible. Personally, I'm quite looking forward to it!

As Frank Herbert said: Dune is about a leader. He has no good or bad intentions. But power comes to him. It doesn’t go well. The people forget that giving up our will to leaders has incredible dangers. After all everyone is about to be human. That goes to religion, politics too. How easy is to mislead people? Create a mass movement. What are the dangers of a mystified figure… the difference between a hero and a villain is where will we end the story… ☝️

I really liked how Paul would look at an alternate future where Jamis was alive and giving him wisdom. Was a nice touch. Also, while I understand why they cut the mentat content, if Chat GPT would have have come out earlier, am sure they would have found more room to explore them.

After the defeat of Emperor and the Imperial Forces on the Plain of Arrakeen, the Fremen expanded the battle off-world.
The casualties of the Paul's holy war were 61 billion lives, the sterilization of ninety planets, and the "demoralization" of five hundred additional worlds. Furthermore, 40 different religions were wiped out, along with their followers.

That is a true crime against humanity. What a horrific reality to live in. I am very intrigued to see how this gets adapted to the screen. Thanks for the insight!

@@CocktailFlicks In the book all these facts were just mentioned in passing. They happened between the 1st and 2nd book. The second book starts 10 or 12 years after end of 1st book. Was a brief catching up. Then the story of Dune Messiah starts. My guess is that some of these events will be shown. Is more effective in movies than books to show action.

Why exactly is needed? It’s in partially in the book and in Messiah. You don’t know what would Denis tell in the next movie intro. He has info dumb.

@@CocktailFlicks Paul's tragedy is that he is completely helpless to stop or considerably alter these outcomes. He even sees that even his death would not only not stop the holy war but make it even more brutal.

I think it is important to remember that in the books Paul already had a wife before Chani that he won in battle. Kind of broke my heart his mom didn't give the line about how Chani will be Paul's concubine but history will call her his wife

Don't be heartbroken. Was just a device to set up a cliffhanger. Most viewers also miss the fact that Jessica was also not married to Paul's father. This is common in the Feudal World Herbert set up in Dune.

I've never read the books, but I do have some knowledge of the story moving forward. I think the director Denis Villeneuve will make Alia Atreides grow rapidly in appearance, using Anya-Taylor Joy but she will still be a child (she will be a full-grown woman by the age of 6 or 7). I think that's smart because that way they got themselves a well-known actress to attract more viewers, while avoiding the use of child actors, which often change in looks between movies, who are often NOT good actors, for this crucial role or the use of more crappy CGI like they did in the Twilight Saga for the children. I think they dodged a bullet with this decision. As for the change of Chani's character, I guess it was part of the agendas all movies recently are applying (women empowerment, not to be used or be taken for granted). However, this representation worked in my opinion, I loved it. Yes, if you're a woman nowadays, you would NOT accept to be replaced by another woman. That's why she's sad at the end. I get her emotions here. But Paul did say that she will come around. She has to, she's the mother of Paul's children. As a straight man, for the first time in many recent years, I really liked the females in this movie, Chani and her girl friend Shishakli (a new character for this movie specifically, not present in the books, saddened that she died) AND Lady Jessica (she kind of takes a back seat after giving birth to her daughter Alia) were all given more to do and they were all strong women, attractive yet still capable, awesome and terrifying women and I didn't see them as cringe as the recent crappy female representations that Hollywood is trying to force on us (NO character arc build or development). So, I am happy with all these changes. I give this movie 9.5/10.

I think that's a fair take. As others have said, some things work better in books than they do on screen, child aging being one such problem that studios have to work around. I suppose in the grand scale of things, Alia's character was not the most important to the story at this point, so there is really no point in trying to force her into it.
I also agree that the character development in this film is superb. Hollywood really needs to learn the lesson that its not WHO plays the role, but rather how well the role is written and acted that truly makes a performance memorable. Yes, Chani's reaction is not lore accurate, but it's an understandable human action; it makes her character interesting and relatable instead of just another piece to help move the plot along.

When you don’t know what’s coming…. The time jump was here. IF they wanted anything with Alia the child? That was here. She was the one killing the Baron. She literally talked to her mother as a child. This movie would take place years after the first if we follow the book. That has logic because Paul mentioned here that he knew the ways of the Harkonen so what did he show? How did the fremen learn from him this fast? I will not tell you more. The Messiah doesn’t need a child Alia.

The vision of "starving" was just a way to say that a lot of lives were going to be lost if Paul "wins". From the first part he knew what the future held. "Holy War". Famine. Destruction. But Herbert made clear that the Universe needed a change. And even though many died. Humanity would survive through Paul's choices. Many viewers of the movie think Paul turns into a bad guy. Even you two thought that Jessica went "around the bend". But remember. the Bene Gesserit "Do not hope. They plan". And both Jessica and her son were nothing if not "good" Bene Gesserits. "Holy Purpose" can seem Evil. But I would take my chances with Leto's son. Over the Emperor, The Baron, and the Reverend Mother, any day. Thanks for the great reaction.
