- The wait is over! Husqvarna’s striking Vitpilen 701 is here. Is it a rad retro, an exotic naked bike, or a sexy street tracker? We don’t know, but we dig the look and love the way this thing rides. Coming at you from the OTW test facility in SoCal and the suave streets of Barcelona, Spain, is our complete review of this new model from Husky.
--
Husqvarna is headed in a novel direction under its new owner, KTM, and we like what we see. In an effort to re-establish the brand and break into the street market, the folks in Austria and Sweden penned the stunning Vitpilen 701. It’s powered by the familiar 693cc single from the 690 Duke but wrapped in futuristic styling that sets it apart from everything else on the road. And we’ve had a long time to pore over the specs, since the bike was first announced in late 2015.
After staring at studio images and spy photos of the bike for so long, we finally got to test the Vitpilen in Barcelona, Spain, and the riding experience is as unique as the bike’s appearance. You can read this comprehensive First Ride report to get the scoop on this exciting new model, or if you prefer your reviews in video format, we also filmed a full-length On Two Wheels. In this video, we put the Vitpilen 701 through its paces on both sides of the Atlantic to bring you a snapshot of how this bike works, where it belongs, and who it’s suitable for.

I hope Husky will read this. When these don't sell great initially do not blame your design team and engineers. They did great, but that price means these things won't move for the first couple years.
the 401 is like 5 grand
kolby4078
Yeah, and slapped together in India.
Have to remind ourselves that Husqvarna is owned by KTM. KTM surely doesn't want to steal market value away from its 690 Duke. It seems KTM is trying to turn Husqvarna into a niche luxury brand.
$12k for a single...single disc...no thanks. I realize Austrians think they deserve more, but nah dudes.
okleydokley nothing wrong with the thumper. That's part of why it has so much torque. The single disc I would also defend. As long as it has the stopping power and feel, a large single disc is no problem. One less set of pads to replace, and it's a lighter system. Think about it, this bike weights 28lbs less than an abs ninja 300. That's a hell of an achievement. I just wish the msrp also reflected the less is more approach too.
Guys, your testvideos are awesome! It's always fun to watch and you are nailing it every damn time! Thank you, for your passion not only with riding, but also with your video production. We, as the viewer, can clearly see the huge amount of work, that goes into it.
That's the most beautiful riding mower I have ever laid my eyes on.
I love this channel very much. No regret this is the most genuine one. I'd never wanna miss any updates from this channel, cause I'm learning alot watching videos of this channel . Good work !
I love the way you don´t take yourself too seriously. Had very much fun watching this video!
Can I put one on ebay say its a Keanu Reeves bike and get $85k for it?
CPUspeed lol
hahahaha
Actually Keanu Reeves rides a Norton...
Probably, yes, lol
Shravan Ramakrishna Keanu Reeves has his own brand..
What an awesome bike. Also your acting between numbers and riding is spectacular and really well vibed. Keep up the great work boys. We love it!
You guys are awesome. I really like this new types of videos that you’re making. Thanks a lot and keep them coming
Zack looks like Where's Waldo
Dona_Mane that was my exact thought!!!!!!!
We found Waldo!
My first thought too! Lol
Please never wear skinny jeans again Zack.
Love Zach’s perfect hipster look
Where's Waldo
Yeah. At first I didn't get the joke.
it was just brilliant
I am so stoked that reviews of this bike are finally rolling out! It’s been yeeeeears of anticipation!
Great job on the video!!!!! The production is fantastic and i really enjoyed watching and feeling like you are really connecting to me! Keep up the great work
Zack looks like Waldo with schizophrenia i guess Husqvarna is a hell of a drug
I want to see Lemmy from Revzilla in them jeans.
Adam Jordan haha that would be EPIC
Hoagie Sherlin totally
Dude that was fucking hilarious
Ari you and zack are just legends in motorcycling journalism, its a pleasure to watch your videos.. Outstanding👌
First video I’ve seen from this channel - super entertaining and excellent production values - really well done. Oh, and the bike looks really cool too!
You guys make that bike look even better than it already looks, keep up the great work!
"How does it percolate your ground?" This line killed me
"How does it percolate your grounds?" I lol'd in my office.
I obviously like motorcycles, but I think you guys made me love them again. Such awesome content.
Great improvement on the production quality! Keep the vids coming!
Kind of missed the obvious question. Yes $12k is a lot, so how much different is the 2017 Duke 690? At what $8k? A true breakdown of the difference there was called for, perhaps Husky does not want that said too loudly
Do you want silver or Orange, That's the comparison. Its *Fancy lighting system and R&D in the design is what you're paying for. 690 Duke is the better buy, Plus the new orange one just pops. although the White and black we got in looks good too. *I guess you could throw that lighting into R&D design
duke 690 redone
Difference is the crappier dash, the fugly muffler and tank and the clip-on bars.
Would try these forks and bars on my Duke though.
I found it strange they didn't mention the Duke or KTM once. Considering the KTM LC4 engine and KTM owned WP forks....
Does seem strange to me that they avoided any connection to the Duke `
690 even though they are so close in substance to each other.
Frankly, I would buy the Duke again, even if these were the same price. Even with the duke's plastic (very visibly) tank.
This is nice, but for me this is just a more hipster version of the duke. And I personally don't like the design.
The duke stands closer to its supermoto/motard roots with its look....
Love the look of the bike, the weight is pretty awesome. Looking forward to these being a reasonable $9k in a few years.
Yeah already a 7500 eur ;) now im ready to buy it
You guys crack me up every time. Love your channel and your reviews dont hold back. Thanks for your work.
PS, I got to do a section of the Great Ocean Road under closed conditions.
Me and another fella got to do a run about 15kms into Lorne.
Mmmmm. Heaven on a bike.
These bikes are going to be classics. I really need one. I check it out as soon it comes to Sweden. Great video, love it.!
what is the black jacket Ari is wearing?
HOLY SHIT is that cilynder made of gold ??!!
Excellent, comprehensive review. Man, do I LOVE this bike
The Video Producer should be awarded for making best automobile review intro !!! 0:46 was expecting brakes in this extreme wide frame
Rest was so cool to watch !!!
The dash reminds me of the XSR900
HadesOmega Moto the whole bike does
Which I would rather have plus the $2k+ I would save.
Except it doesn't work nearly as well as the XSR900/Bolt display.
What jacket is he wearing while riding?
I would like to know this too . ^^^
I am seriously considering selling the family wagon for one of these.
I love it and i love the fact that you guys consider it a good bike.
Not just a hipster tool.
I might be influenced by being swedish, but i think this bike sums up what riding means to me 👍
Great job as always! ☺
omfg this was so well made!! I am impressed!
That reminds me, I have to get my chain saw sharpened.
100% buying this bike, I don't care if it sounds like a lawnmower.
bfchang You have some pretty beefy lawnmowers.
A true lawnmower sound!
An Akrapovic will fix that!👌
Fun fakt: Husqvarna's main business are lawnmowers. XD
The engine still sounds like an old tractor at idle... Even with an akra.
Awesomeeeeeeeee intro ! All the specs ! As always, nice video.
Great Review! and an Spaniard i loved that spanish guitar music on the background on the Barcelona segment of the video :).
Yamaha XRS 700, $8,500. XRS 900, $9,500. MT 07, $7,600l MT 09, $9000. Suzuki GSX-S1000, $10,800. GSX-S750, $8300. Kawasaki Z900 ABS, $8,800. Z900RS, $11,200. Did I miss any?
Suzuki SV650
A cool bike,way overpriced.
Is that a building on the right 5:28?

Here you have it.
YEEEEEEES! FINALLY! I get to see you guys on the new Husky. Cant wait to see this one i a shootout!
Great review dudes!
Quality! Amazing review and one beautiful bike indeed.
I'm interested but I'm not sure about the long term reliability of the engine 😶. Other wise an mt-09 will do the trick. Gimme the nuda 900 though 😎.
The only MAJOR Drawback is it's ""PRICE"" 💰🤑🤑
This one was really good! Liked the way you presented the numbers in the beginning (and what numbers you chose).
I never knew what love felt like till I saw that bike, I need that beauty more than I need air.
The 401s will be interesting to look at as well. Much more affordable it seems.
RobertGoulet298 the 401 is a ktm Duke 390 in a dress and $2000 more
Very similar situation between this bike and the duke 690. Maybe not as similar as between the 401 and the 390, but still.
Gene Long I believe it's $5299 vs $6299...?
yep would love a 401 review!!!
$6K for the 401 I can see but $12K for the 701 is about $3K too much!
The price does not seem very appealing. Interesting idea though.
I love it. It's a cheaper version of the arch motorcycle company!!!!
You guys are too awesome. Love it!
fantastic review thanks guys
How does it compare to the KTM Duke 690?
BloodBath707 it is a ktm Duke 690. They just put a 👗 on it
The main comparison? It's not nearly as affordable. hahaha
BloodBath707 It is a Duke 690 that costs $3k more for a hipster cafe look, also they managed to put a worse looking dash somehow.
Nice bike but ....$12K! ....paassss!! ...Holy Sh*t! is only $1000 cheaper than the 1000cc 4 cyl FZ-10, Ducatis are looking like a great value compared to this bike.
...a great value until the first major service.
Agree. This should be priced as a nicer SV650 or FZ07. 12k gets a whole lot more bike with other manufacturers.
Quality costs dumbass
My guess is that this bike is cheap to insure with 75bhp, but if its fun to ride with it's single cylinder character what's wrong to pay a few bucks more? The design are very nice and you don't have to change or style it, saving you money you won't get back when selling.
This should be competing with the Street Triple and Duke 790 price wise since the components are nicer than the Fz07 and Sv650(which are awesome don't get me wrong)
Thanks for the review, I am eagerly waiting for this bike to ride.
Always so entertaining these two are
Came here after seeing 250cc version 😍😍😍😍
I might be completely wrong, but isn't the engine the same as the one in the Duke 690? Isn't KTM moving away from the LC4 and into a 790 twin? How does it leave this one?
Wouldn't the Yamaha XSR700 be a better alternative since it's cheaper?
So many questions in my head right now.
the XSR700 parallel twin is 30-40 kgs heavier and has the same power as the 701's single cylinder. The 693cc is on steroids yet reliable and easy to live with. You need to choose between instant torque (literally instant torque) and power or a cheaper bike because money is an issue. Basically whatever torque figures you get on a 600cc sports bike at 12000 rpms+ you get it on this 693cc bike (and more) at 2000 rpms , it's an insane motor , now add the factor of lighter weight into the equation and you get what you get.
they did a few updates to the 690 engine, notably upgrading from SOHC to DOHC.
Yeah, I get the whole premisse of the big displacement single, I've ridden a 390 duke, very briefly mind you, and it had decent toque I'd imagine almost doubling that would even better. I was wondering more about the price, and how it puts it near some tough competition. Not to mention the new powertrain KTM is developing for the upcoming 790 duke, and how would that make its way into a Husky bike.
The bike is well equipped tho. From fully adjustable WP's front and back to brembo calipers, radial masters for the clutch and front brake, etc... it even has CNC machined folding and adjustable levers, and not those cheap china grade ones from ebay. Price is steep tho, can't deny that.
ArthurAlcantara with this bike they have put a "place holder" while developing a totally similar café racer based on the 790. This 690 is very expensive for them to produce (it's produced in Austria), while the 790 is much cheaper (made in India, I think). As soon as the 790 will be ready, the 690 will be terminated.
You guys make the best videos. More please.
Great video guys! Beautiful bike, I'm sure it rides just fine, but again, price is a deal-breaker.
Hard to justify the pricetag when you can get an fz07 or an sv650 for half that
It (my opinion) looks so much better than the other ones though
12 grand for a thumper? (pronounced thum-per). It's nice but one cylinder, one front disk, and that gauge cluster (I had to look away). 12 grand for a thumper?
Honestly, I wish it was nicer and cost more.
One, two, three or four cylinders has nothing to do with pricing. You obviously have never ridden a 'thumper' as you say. Single cylinder engines are full of character.
blipco5, If it affects the cost of a bike, why are we paying just as much if not more for many twin cylinder bikes? Many four cylinder bikes are much cheaper. The number of cylinders has nothing to do with pricing. There are just so many other variables to take into account. I agree that thumpers do shake, but that's part of their charm and character.
as opposed to 16.5 grand for the bmw R9T
also the thumper is a huge turn on. Like he said, its a supermoto crossed with a sport bike. Its exactly what I want.
Robert Giggie but the R9T is overpriced too. Honda just came out with their neo cafe CB1000R that has the same MSRP as the vitpilen 701 lol.
Sound of this beauty...Loved it
Can't understand that this channel has so little subscribers and views..
Really awesome videos!!!
12k. Good luck. . . .
Definitely informative. For that money though, a list a mile long would be better. Oh yeah i almost forgot. Hard break in vs soft or manufacture suggested? C'mon stick your neck out there. Don't be scared
Guys make all your review like this. Intro is very informative.
Bloopers on the end are priceless
Has good looks, and LOVE the lightness of it,along with the simplicity of the single-cylinder,but C'MON Husqvarna........12 grand??? SERIOUSLY??? You best have ALL the engine-internals coated in GOLD & TITANIUM for THAT amount!!! Sorry,no sale.
Nuda 900 please
I really wish they come out with a nuda. I've got one hehe I just want a newer version.
You came to my city in this new awesome bike and I missed it... Even you jumped with the bike in front of my university, that was nuts!!
The 401 version and the other model Svartpilen looks really cool too !
$$$
Value isn't why you buy KTM.
some info, owned and produced by KTM, it shares engine and many other components with the KTM 690. planned production is in India, wish reviewers would be more forthcoming.Kind of a watered down stylish KTM 690 in my opinion.
We mention that the engine is from the 690, and so is the frame. This bike is not built in India, but in Mattighofen, Austria, in KTM's production facility. Production is already underway with bikes expected in US dealerships in April.
The 401 will be built in India, the 701 will be made by overpaid Austrians.
okleydokley I'm not sure that's true... the manufacturer's claim on why these were so delayed was that the whole Husqvarna street line would made in Austria. Including the 401.
Does anyone have documentation to the contrary?
Short posts on a video are well, short. Early production of these bikes will be initially in Austria. Production of at least one will be shifted to India. KTM which owns Husqvarna, is it self last I knew 48% owned by Bajaj Auto in India. All the Duke 200cc, and 390cc and sport models, are made in India with a small production in the Philippines. These are just KTMs in Husky clothing, slated for future production, at least in part, in India.
the initial batch of 401s are all made in austria. eventually mass production will be moved to india. who cares? anyone super mad that triumphs arent made in england? or most japanese bikes not even made in japan anymore? harleys are made in the USA, and yet they are the worst at QA.
Wheelies: yes
Y'all and your production team are amaxing
finally some english videos on these new huskies! thanks!!! any plans on reviewing the 401s?
12 grand? Uh no thanks. I'm gucci with MT-07
sooo it not safe to say that its just a reskinned KTM 690 duke
Absolutely phenomenal!
What a beautiful bike..!!! And u two guys... Are the Best!
Zack looks like that hipster who has his own composting pit and asks about ethical working conditions of koalas when buying eucalyptus oil. Likes craft beer and roasted almond coffee.
nagarjun madhusudan hey, I see nothing wrong with those questions lol.
Imagine your mom sends you to buy a new lawnmower and you get home with Vitpilen 701.
This production quality is wild 🔥
I didnt think this show could keep getting better but it does! I was really looking for to this bike until I saw that new kawi 900 rs rafe.
I think this bike don't justify its price anyone else ?
...but it still is $12.000
Big Bang Duke I’d buy it for $12 hands down!
I was looking forward to this review. I'm wanting to get a new bike and this one is on the top 3.
Ivan Jetá you dont want this bike. Way too overpriced for the quality.
Now this is a proper review!
for 2k less buy.a new 600
Basically it's the 701 supermoto engine in street bike trim. eh...
my favorite aspect of this bike is its appearance, its simple but it also has some elegance
Definitely the best two motorcycle reviewers to watch, they are everything I was hoping 44teeth would and should be! Great job guys!
Just buy a yamaha XSR 900 for less money..
MakTheSank less money and nearly twice the power
and don't forget japanese reliability .
One very happy XSR owner chiming in.
I did sit on the Vitpilen at a trade show, and was drawn to it because of its unique look. Sadly, the riding position for me was terrible and within seconds I was in pain. I much prefer the more upright stance of the XSR-
well yes i have to admit the Vitpilen looks more unique, but i dont find the reason to buy a unique bike from the dealership. Just make your own cafe racer ? Anyway , its a cool bike i am not trying to hate, but i dont see myself buying one of these.
MakTheSank also less special
Damn 1 cyl $12000. Nope
Pasha_Houston They could have made it a 2 cylinder bike, but that would have cost $24,000.
Thanks for reviewing this bike. I love it. How about taking the svartpilen down some dirt roads?
Literally my dream bike
LITERALLY
Dude it's called Husqvarna not Huskyvarna. (i'm from Sweden)
here's me pronouncing it the right way: ruclips.net/video/HI3yGw3oOcw/видео.html
That single cyclinder is a big let down for me, couldn't thy altest make it a parallel twin
Why is it a letdown? To me it's probably the most fun engine I've ever experienced.
Ja jeweet when the engine gets older u'll have a lot of vibration ,u know how single cyclinder engines goes ,that is y the KTM change from a single cyclinder to a vtwin on thier new model,KTM 790
Rider For Life with the second counterbalance shaft that was introduced on the 701 sumo it really isn't that vibey man. Not even close to the older version thats in the 690 smc
Its a paralell twin and KTM has mostly single cylinders in their range for a reason: Theyre fun and easy to use
SunzOffski yeah I prefer the single counterbalance shaft tbh.
The first time I saw this bike was on Reddit a few days ago. I thought it was a custom build. looks pretty sweet!
Love the vids guys :)
I think this is a paid review!
On Two Wheels isn't strictly about reviews. It's about providing the entertainment they want while slipping in some good info. Also if it was a paid review then why did Ari list a set a cons for the bike? 5:35
Mecha Shiva do you really think a speedo meter not liked by the reviewer going to stop someone from a purchase based on a review, $12000 single cylinder 700 cc motorcycle getting praises & comparison with masters of the category from motorcyclist magazine isn't easy to digest.
Not just the speedo, but the ignition location, lack of a key-less start, and buzzy mirrors. Also I'm not too concerned with how someone else views the value of the bike. I'm only responding to your "paid review" comment. Ari still had to admit the bike is pricey.
Mecha Shiva It's a press release. They invited him to Barcelona to ride the bike. The text is probably 1:1 from Husky. (He even mentioned it. It's kinda obvious too..) FortNine has a video on that topic. Everything matches with this video.
Not the biggest fan of the look but way too overpriced for a one cylinder bike......
Excelente video saludos de Costa Rica
Great review and funny episode!
Beautiful bike, and yes a bit over-priced. An ideal hipster bike, but also one that will age well into a classic IMO.
