  • The wait is over! Husqvarna’s striking Vitpilen 701 is here. Is it a rad retro, an exotic naked bike, or a sexy street tracker? We don’t know, but we dig the look and love the way this thing rides. Coming at you from the OTW test facility in SoCal and the suave streets of Barcelona, Spain, is our complete review of this new model from Husky.
    --
    Husqvarna is headed in a novel direction under its new owner, KTM, and we like what we see. In an effort to re-establish the brand and break into the street market, the folks in Austria and Sweden penned the stunning Vitpilen 701. It’s powered by the familiar 693cc single from the 690 Duke but wrapped in futuristic styling that sets it apart from everything else on the road. And we’ve had a long time to pore over the specs, since the bike was first announced in late 2015.
    After staring at studio images and spy photos of the bike for so long, we finally got to test the Vitpilen in Barcelona, Spain, and the riding experience is as unique as the bike’s appearance. You can read this comprehensive First Ride report to get the scoop on this exciting new model, or if you prefer your reviews in video format, we also filmed a full-length On Two Wheels. In this video, we put the Vitpilen 701 through its paces on both sides of the Atlantic to bring you a snapshot of how this bike works, where it belongs, and who it’s suitable for.

    I hope Husky will read this. When these don't sell great initially do not blame your design team and engineers. They did great, but that price means these things won't move for the first couple years.

      Have to remind ourselves that Husqvarna is owned by KTM. KTM surely doesn't want to steal market value away from its 690 Duke. It seems KTM is trying to turn Husqvarna into a niche luxury brand.

      $12k for a single...single disc...no thanks. I realize Austrians think they deserve more, but nah dudes.

    • @BmxDieseldude
      @BmxDieseldude 6 лет назад +55

      okleydokley nothing wrong with the thumper. That's part of why it has so much torque. The single disc I would also defend. As long as it has the stopping power and feel, a large single disc is no problem. One less set of pads to replace, and it's a lighter system. Think about it, this bike weights 28lbs less than an abs ninja 300. That's a hell of an achievement. I just wish the msrp also reflected the less is more approach too.

    Kind of missed the obvious question. Yes $12k is a lot, so how much different is the 2017 Duke 690? At what $8k? A true breakdown of the difference there was called for, perhaps Husky does not want that said too loudly

    • @forrestnutter
      @forrestnutter 6 лет назад +5

      Do you want silver or Orange, That's the comparison. Its *Fancy lighting system and R&D in the design is what you're paying for. 690 Duke is the better buy, Plus the new orange one just pops. although the White and black we got in looks good too. *I guess you could throw that lighting into R&D design

      Difference is the crappier dash, the fugly muffler and tank and the clip-on bars.
      Would try these forks and bars on my Duke though.
      I found it strange they didn't mention the Duke or KTM once. Considering the KTM LC4 engine and KTM owned WP forks....

    • @tdmshack
      @tdmshack 6 лет назад

      Does seem strange to me that they avoided any connection to the Duke `
      690 even though they are so close in substance to each other.

    • @denesk2794
      @denesk2794 6 лет назад +2

      Frankly, I would buy the Duke again, even if these were the same price. Even with the duke's plastic (very visibly) tank.
      This is nice, but for me this is just a more hipster version of the duke. And I personally don't like the design.
      The duke stands closer to its supermoto/motard roots with its look....

      My guess is that this bike is cheap to insure with 75bhp, but if its fun to ride with it's single cylinder character what's wrong to pay a few bucks more? The design are very nice and you don't have to change or style it, saving you money you won't get back when selling.

    I might be completely wrong, but isn't the engine the same as the one in the Duke 690? Isn't KTM moving away from the LC4 and into a 790 twin? How does it leave this one?
    Wouldn't the Yamaha XSR700 be a better alternative since it's cheaper?
    So many questions in my head right now.

    • @airdoctor1251
      @airdoctor1251 6 лет назад +38

      the XSR700 parallel twin is 30-40 kgs heavier and has the same power as the 701's single cylinder. The 693cc is on steroids yet reliable and easy to live with.You need to choose between instant torque (literally instant torque) and power or a cheaper bike because money is an issue. Basically whatever torque figures you get on a 600cc sports bike at 12000 rpms+ you get it on this 693cc bike (and more) at 2000 rpms , it's an insane motor , now add the factor of lighter weight into the equation and you get what you get.

    • @asado300

      Yeah, I get the whole premisse of the big displacement single, I've ridden a 390 duke, very briefly mind you, and it had decent toque I'd imagine almost doubling that would even better. I was wondering more about the price, and how it puts it near some tough competition. Not to mention the new powertrain KTM is developing for the upcoming 790 duke, and how would that make its way into a Husky bike.

    • @sinki19841984
      @sinki19841984 6 лет назад +7

      The bike is well equipped tho. From fully adjustable WP's front and back to brembo calipers, radial masters for the clutch and front brake, etc... it even has CNC machined folding and adjustable levers, and not those cheap china grade ones from ebay. Price is steep tho, can't deny that.

    • @mariobondanza5149
      @mariobondanza5149 6 лет назад

      ArthurAlcantara with this bike they have put a "place holder" while developing a totally similar café racer based on the 790. This 690 is very expensive for them to produce (it's produced in Austria), while the 790 is much cheaper (made in India, I think). As soon as the 790 will be ready, the 690 will be terminated.

    • @marcj6265
      @marcj6265 6 лет назад +9

      One, two, three or four cylinders has nothing to do with pricing. You obviously have never ridden a 'thumper' as you say. Single cylinder engines are full of character.

    • @marcj6265
      @marcj6265 6 лет назад +1

      blipco5, If it affects the cost of a bike, why are we paying just as much if not more for many twin cylinder bikes? Many four cylinder bikes are much cheaper. The number of cylinders has nothing to do with pricing. There are just so many other variables to take into account. I agree that thumpers do shake, but that's part of their charm and character.

    some info, owned and produced by KTM, it shares engine and many other components with the KTM 690. planned production is in India, wish reviewers would be more forthcoming.Kind of a watered down stylish KTM 690 in my opinion.

    • @AriH211
      @AriH211 6 лет назад +11

      We mention that the engine is from the 690, and so is the frame. This bike is not built in India, but in Mattighofen, Austria, in KTM's production facility. Production is already underway with bikes expected in US dealerships in April.

    • @truantray

      The 401 will be built in India, the 701 will be made by overpaid Austrians.

    • @JasonPorter
      @JasonPorter 6 лет назад +1

      okleydokley I'm not sure that's true... the manufacturer's claim on why these were so delayed was that the whole Husqvarna street line would made in Austria. Including the 401.
      Does anyone have documentation to the contrary?

    • @DEeMONsworld
      @DEeMONsworld 6 лет назад +1

      Short posts on a video are well, short. Early production of these bikes will be initially in Austria. Production of at least one will be shifted to India. KTM which owns Husqvarna, is it self last I knew 48% owned by Bajaj Auto in India. All the Duke 200cc, and 390cc and sport models, are made in India with a small production in the Philippines. These are just KTMs in Husky clothing, slated for future production, at least in part, in India.

    • @notstevelam
      @notstevelam 6 лет назад

      the initial batch of 401s are all made in austria. eventually mass production will be moved to india. who cares? anyone super mad that triumphs arent made in england? or most japanese bikes not even made in japan anymore? harleys are made in the USA, and yet they are the worst at QA.

      I did sit on the Vitpilen at a trade show, and was drawn to it because of its unique look. Sadly, the riding position for me was terrible and within seconds I was in pain. I much prefer the more upright stance of the XSR-

    • @MakTheSank

      well yes i have to admit the Vitpilen looks more unique, but i dont find the reason to buy a unique bike from the dealership. Just make your own cafe racer ? Anyway , its a cool bike i am not trying to hate, but i dont see myself buying one of these.

    • @AKS-wn2qz
      @AKS-wn2qz 6 лет назад +2

      Ja jeweet when the engine gets older u'll have a lot of vibration ,u know how single cyclinder engines goes ,that is y the KTM change from a single cyclinder to a vtwin on thier new model,KTM 790

    • @Jajeweet
      @Jajeweet 6 лет назад +7

      Rider For Life with the second counterbalance shaft that was introduced on the 701 sumo it really isn't that vibey man. Not even close to the older version thats in the 690 smc

    • @Kubyy
      @Kubyy 6 лет назад +1

      On Two Wheels isn't strictly about reviews. It's about providing the entertainment they want while slipping in some good info. Also if it was a paid review then why did Ari list a set a cons for the bike? 5:35

    • @sameermalik5322
      @sameermalik5322 6 лет назад +2

      Mecha Shiva do you really think a speedo meter not liked by the reviewer going to stop someone from a purchase based on a review, $12000 single cylinder 700 cc motorcycle getting praises & comparison with masters of the category from motorcyclist magazine isn't easy to digest.

    • @mechashiva8328
      @mechashiva8328 6 лет назад +3

      Not just the speedo, but the ignition location, lack of a key-less start, and buzzy mirrors. Also I'm not too concerned with how someone else views the value of the bike. I'm only responding to your "paid review" comment. Ari still had to admit the bike is pricey.

    • @dpfphdedpz
      @dpfphdedpz 6 лет назад

      Mecha Shiva It's a press release. They invited him to Barcelona to ride the bike. The text is probably 1:1 from Husky. (He even mentioned it. It's kinda obvious too..) FortNine has a video on that topic. Everything matches with this video.
