  • Husqvarna Vitpilen 701 - The Review from Knox
    A couple of months ago, we were lucky enough to get hold of the Husqvarna Vitpilen 701. In the time we had it, I raced it at the Bike Shed Festival 2019 and used it extensively up here in the beautiful English Lake District where the Knox HQ and factory is located.
    In that time, I have fallen in love with the Vitpilen 701, and it is my favourite bike of 2019! Combining the fantastic KTM 690 single cylinder engine with a superlight-weight package of great chassis, suspension, brakes and tyres means that the Husqvarna 701 is a real riders bike. The Vitpilen 701 engine produces 75hp and 72Nm of torque, has a quickshifter and weighs only 157kg dry.
    The Vitpilen 701 is super sharp in the looks department and brings something quite different to the typical Café Racer with its sharp lines and careful angles. However, the way that Husqvarna have blended styling with great specs and fantastic ergonomics mean that in my opinion, it’s pretty much perfect! Of course there are faster bikes out there, my own bike included, but for road riding and maximum enjoyment, there are not many motorcycles out there that can beat it and I hope that people start to take the bike more seriously.
    In the interests of this not looking like a paid advert (which it isn’t by the way), there are some niggles and doubts which I talk about in the video, but none of them are deal breakers. For more information on the Husky Vitpilen 701 check out www.husqvarna-motorcycles.com....

    Rode it when it first came out and thought that is was beautifully designed and lovely to look at. The big single as you say is better higher in the revs - I kept stalling it, but that wasn’t helped by the adjustment of the clutch (very close to the bars). I did find it a bit uncomfortable, but that’s just down to me as I find anything with a slight lean murder! Great review and glad you enjoyed the bike.

    Thumbs up. I've been watching your reviews for a while now, and had been hoping for some Vitpilen 701 love. I took the gamble on this bike back in 2018; and I see now they are gaining a bit of a cult following. I did my first track day on my Vitpilen, and I had an absolute blast. Top fun. These bikes are often overlooked as a bit of a toy but it's incredibly fun to ride on windy canyon and mountain roads, and has power in all the right places. (If interested in seeing the track footage click my avatar). PS > Re the vibrations - consider changing the stock bar-end weights for heavier varieties. Evotech do a good set. The vibrations are par for the course with a big single; but more noticeable if you're coming from multi-cylinder backgrounds.

      @@12345678990bob I also have a 2002 F4i (600cc sport bike) and an 86 Radian 600. The F4i is super fun at high speeds, but not very exciting in the city, and it’s not the most comfortable. The Vitpilen 701 is perfect because you can have SO MUCH fun at legal speeds as it’s super torquey. Red lights are actually fun because it wheelies and stoppies so easily. Also, it’s fast enough to keep pace with your sport bike buddies who have 600cc sport bikes (unless they are constantly cruising at 260km/h). Also, this bike gets more attention than any other bike I’ve ever owned. Bikers and nonbikers are always stopping me to ask questions. I doubt any of the brands will ever make another 700cc single cylinder again. Grab one while you still can! Check out both reviews by Knox and also check out the reviews by motorcyclist magazine on RUclips (Ari Henning) and Jay Leno’s garage RUclips video on husqvarna. Nope you are spot on about the vibrations on one side of the handle bars thank you so much Aaron, Husqvarna UK please listen to Aaron? My 2018 701 one of the first in the UK is back with the dealer for its second oil leak after already having one fixed and also having the fuel tank replaced. I have been emailing Husqvarna UK about the quality problems my bike has bits starting to flake and corrode but mainly about the vibrations because it is so bad my hands goes numb and I cannot pull the front brake lever! So this is not safe but was basically told to change the way I ride and there is nothing wrong with the bike it’s me! Not what I wanted from a new bike costing nearly 9k.
    Forgot to tell them I also had some electrical issues and the bike cutting out while down shifting a couple of times. My dealer has been great, but Husqvarna UK have been shocking and do not want to know. If you had these problems maybe they would sort it for you as you have a bigger platform to voice your concerns.

    First of all, great informative review thanks for making my decision ever more difficult! 🤣😃
    I am just up to buy my first bike here in UK. I do already have some experience on motorbike back from my homecountry. Really into the Vitpilen series, just not sure really which one to go for. I am a torn between the 401 or 701 model. I know the 701 might be a bit to big for a new rider, but it would need to be restricted to fit in A2 category anyway, and reviews I watched did highlight how “lightweight” and easy handling it is. Would You still go for the 401 to start with, then sell it after two years and upgrade for the 701, or just simply put some more cash on the side, buy the 701 and use it with the restrictor in for 2 years, and then get the full power without all the struggle to sell the old bike and find the new one? What would You Guys recommend?

    • @KnoxArmour
      @KnoxArmour  4 года назад

      Thanks, glad you like the review! Tbh, I havent ridden the 401, but believe it is a really great bike too. Difficult question, IMO though and knowing the incredible deals available on the 401 at the moment (you can pick up a 700mile 68 plate for £3,500), you might be better getting that and riding the wheels off it without losing much money at all. Then when 2 years comes, upgrade! Hope that helps, Aaron KNOX

    I own a Vitpilen 701. The fuel gauge indeed sucks. I was cruising on the furthest lane, gauge reading full, but bike shuts off completely! I was lucky to get out of this safely. I don't find vibration on the handlebar though.
    Having owned this bike for more than a year (Nov 2018), it's so much fun to ride, but has serious reliability issues. I had the fuel tank leaking (seems it was a common issue), clutch fluid sealant torn (aka clutch stopped working) in a span of a single month!! Husqvarna replaced it at no cost, cause these were manufacturing defects. But consider the safety risk, towing costs and wait time (it's my sole commute).
    I still want you, but baby I got trust issues.

      That's great really glad you like it! The 890 is a great bike, quite a bit more power and is very fast, amazing handling and brakes, its a great bike and has more sophisticated electronics. However, honestly, the Vitpilen 701 is hard to beat as a fun road package that is just brilliant... particularly if you can get a Akra can put in with the deal or for additional £. Of course, imo, it looks better than either the 790 or 890 duke too... Hope that helps. Aaron KNOX

      Thanks for the reply. Completely agree with you. I actually took the day off work today to try the 890 and vitpilen back to back. Grin factor definitely belonged to the vitpilen. The 890 was brilliant but on the road I’m not good enough / brave enough to use all the performance which means it all seems a bit easy. The vitpilen makes every roundabout and corner feel like a racetrack and is much more rewarding.
      Nearly set on the vitpilen now but as it’s my only bike and I want to do Trackday’s I need to figure out if it’s enough of a do it all bike.

    Pretty spot on review of the Vit 701. The only part that I do not agree with you on is the WP Suspension. IMHO for a $11k USD bike the suspension is very disappointing. Fork cartridges are budget with no preload adjustment and WP offers no support with spring rates and valving. The STEEL bodied rear shock with only rebound adjustment and preload? I find it rather insulting. That being said it's still my favorite bike in my shed and I'd do it all over again if I had the chance.

      Vitpilen is one of the best bikes ever to wheelie as it has loads of snap. You can do it off the throttle in 1st gear, or clutch in 2nd. However, the best way is to go to a wheelie school like Extreme Wheelie and they will teach you. Its a dangerous thing to learn without proper instruction, and of course not for the road. 16:37 they won't do it - it would hurt KTM sales with segment that is already overfilled with bikes. It would be simillar to situation in US right now where they are selling RC390 for 2/3 of the price because there are other bikes in that segment and they did too much of them, and they are not good enough for that price.

  • @ciraloke
    @ciraloke 4 года назад

    It's torque... why don't peeps celebrate the torque and give it it's due? I had the Husky Nuda 900R - it was a torque monster and couple this with exceptional suspension you have a bike that fun for days ...and fun in the real world. Long suspension road bikes (aka motard format) are awesome for the road. In average conditions these will outperform a race replica in the twisties hands down ...and when do you get perfect road conditions on any given Sunday?
    Why do you think KTM suddenly brought out a parallel twin with a loppy firing order ..after never having delved there? They inherited the Nuda, but had to can it (arch rival BMW platform) but knew the formula worked a treat ...waited a suitable amount o time so the peeps wouldn't make the connection and hey presto the 790 Duke.

    • @ciraloke
      @ciraloke 4 года назад

      Loving the Vitpilin too ...and agree - the parallel twin will make it a game-changer.
      No disrespect to KTM, just think they were a bit devious about it - I ended up buying a 990 SMT after righting-off the Nuda (my fault, not the bike's) the bike I was supposed to buy when Husky knocked $3500 off the Nuda R ...have to say though - I miss the Husky (parts hard to get and only abused bikes on the market now) - I'm moving the cockpit down and forward and hoping to get a similar feel - engine is awesome too ...but rear spring is too soft - will get a stiffer spring.
      I'd defs be up for a 901 (new for 2020 890 twin) Vitpilin though.
