Behind the Scenes: James Horner Scores The Horsemen

  • bit.ly/jameshorner The Horsemen love searching the skies for tiny suspended moments of formation perfection. In it, time freezes, the team becomes one, and the Earth rotates around us. These fleeting moments appear like a bolt of lightning... stunning... electric... and then they are gone.
We are often asked, what does it feel like to do this in Mustangs? Finding the words to express it always seemed to slip away and vanish in the clouds... lost forever... until we met James Horner.
James is an Oscar-winning composer for such legendary films as Avatar, Titanic, Braveheart, Apollo 13, A Beautiful Mind, Field Of Dreams, Glory, and Legends Of The Fall. The list goes on and on.
As luck would have it, besides music, James loves to fly. Even more important, he loves Mustangs, their thundering Merlin engines, and formation aerobatics... imagine that! Once again, the Horsemen's P-51 skeleton key opened another magical door. It is through this door that our friendship and passions took flight.
Looking back, it seems inevitable that our obsession for music, film, and flying would project James and the Horsemen onto the world's biggest silver screen... air show center stage. This film documents how we landed there together and takes you behind-the-scenes as Horner records his musical masterpiece for the Horsemen. We truly believe James' score has captured the pure essence of flight and expressed its soul.
Not just for us... for EVERYONE.
EVERYONE who looks to the sky, dreams to soar without limitations... to fly... and Escape Life's Gravity.

    James,
I was so pleased to meet you today at the Salinas Air Show. I am amazed by your ability to meld together your two passions of music and aviation (something I share passions for as well). Your piece perfectly encapsulated the feeling and sensation of flying, and your love for the sport of aerobatics really comes through. I am honored and humbled by your gifts and talents, and you are truly an inspiration. Thank you.

James Horner may have been performing aerobatic maneuvers last month shortly before his single-engine aircraft crashed near the northeast corner of Santa Barbara County, instantly killing the famed movie composer.
The accident occurred during “maneuvering-low-altitude flying,” according to the NTSB. “Radar reviewed by … investigators depicted multiple turns, rapid changes in altitude, and airspeed.”

This is wonderful music, I've been a fan of Mr.Horner since the early 1980s (and how I regret his recent absence on 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' . . . sigh), but the maestro can still surprise me. I'm now all the more looking forward to his score for 'Aviation: The Invisible Highway'.

so the melodic figure we hear over and over - it's right out of Leonard Bernstein's epic song from Candide entitled "Make Our Garden Grow" - of course there's no plagiarism per se - it's only 5 notes - of course Horner treats the figure in a thematic way rather than as part of a longer song-like melody bearing any further similarity
