For those wandering here years later wondering "what is SATA Express?", it had two revisions. One called SATA Express, and the other a little thing called M.2. It stuck around in the form of M.2, not so much in SATA Express.
Well, the NVME protocol that SATA Express could use as well as AHCI is used in current M.2s and some that came out at the time. Older M.2s were either SATA drives in AHCI mode or PCIE NVME drives. M.2 is a form factor.
@@guillaumebillette4078 Of course M.2 is a form factor, i'm not certain how you could think I meant otherwise. It's not as if I was conflating NVMe the interface with M.2 the connector). What I meant to say was that M.2 while being introduced in the same SATA revision (3.2) as SATA Express, M.2 is in of itself a revision of the SATA Express connector. Which I find interesting because M.2 was meant to replace mSATA, but ended up completely supplanting SATA Express as a connector fairly quickly. And just as well it's odd to say that older M.2 drives were either SATA AHCI or NVMe, when that's still the case today? There's no new storage interfaces using M.2.
@@ElPrezzy I think the way it was worded is what I mistook. SATA Express stuck around for a while but I don't think any drive using it was ever released. For SATA M.2 drives I haven't seen any in a long time so I doubt they're still around much except for old stock or Chinese manufacturers. There's been a few M.2 interfaces for Network cards in laptops and Mini PCS as an example. For dives it's just been variations in keys and speed.
+Jonathan Hine Basically you get 2 SATA ports and a worthless thing that you will never use. Have the SSDs that plug into a PCI Expressx1 slot taken the lead?
LinusTechTips dude you are the man. Ive been out of the computer world for awhile and was out of touch on the new and upcoming tech until I found your channel. Thank you for making it easy for me to get back into the tech world.
It's been fun and interesting watching this young guy grow up and become the owner of a large tech-company of his own. He done right good! I wonder who gets the ad-revenue from these old NCIX videos?
finally.... back to the previous style of presentation.... love this more serious one with a hint of humor rather than a tasteless jokes/bad puns the whole video you guys are doing recently...
I just ordered a 512 gb sansubg 950 pro ssd. Im connecting it with an adapter to get full peed on my asus z97 deluxe... Im not using the m.2 ever... Im going to use the sata express ports as regular sata 3 ports. Am I sharing the bandwidth on some ports? I dont want to loose bandwidth on my ssd connected to the pcie adapter... Im already using all the regular sata ports. My mobo is an asus z97 deluxe.
The best use I've found for the Z97 mobo Sata Express port is to plug in two seperate SATA III drives in it. Sata Express is DOA, but the ports can be used as two independent SATA ports anyway, so not all is lost.
When you talk about Gigabits, it should be written as Gb (small "b"), your text in the video shows GB (which is used for Giga-bytes). Keep up the great work, I enjoy all your videos.
Hey Linus, you should make a video about Routers and QoS for games. Which are better and how to choose them. I think is a commom problem for those of us who live with someone else who whatch youtube videos while we play. I have a 50/5Mbp connection and is not enough to avoid a lot of lag when someone else at home decides to what a youtube video or anything like that.
TechAndTipsGamer i have 4hhds in raid 5 and a samsung ssd and i'm already running out of space. (i cant even use the floppy bays and have no 3,5 bays left.) Where did he fit so many? Or does he use a rack mount server case?
I really enjoy your videos as they seem to de-mystify many facts in a simple manner. One thing that I have not been able to confirm is whether there are Sata 3 versus Sata 2 specific cables to benefit from the higher speeds, like USB 3. Many forums I visited say there is no difference except my Asus Z97 motherboard explicitly states that port "connects via serial ATA 6.0Gb/s signal cables".
Great vid, learned a lot! By the way, I just love the fact that you used the SATA Azores Airlines logo on the thumbnail for this video, immediately caught my attention when scrolling through what to watch next. Any other Portuguese viewers out there? Make yourselves known!!
My Question is this. Should I plug my SSD into my sata exspress slot or sata 6? If I plug into my sata express slot will I be slowing down my 2 graphics cards because im sharing my PCI lanes?
I'm waiting for SATA 4 which, if I remember correctly, should come out sometime in the beginning of '16. By that time we should have both DDR4 (should come out in the early parts of '15, I hope) and better 4K support ^^,
forgive my confusion, but what was the single red port sata express that I had on my laptop for exterior storage? 2.0? Don't understand why sata express now needs 3 ports for one function. Why not a single 20 gb thunderbolt or a single cat 6?
so let's say I buy one of those boards Linus is showing off, and I fill all of the PCI-E slots with add-on cards (graphics cards, sound card, maybe a NIC or RAID card), would that mean I've then run out of PCI-E lanes and thus can't use a Sata Express drive, even if I were to plug it in?
So. Sorry. I hope that you gimme a hand for resolve a little question... I bought a sata express cable for another SSD 128 Gb (little, but...). Motherboard ASUS Z170A. This is probably a dumb question. Speaking in pure hypotheticals, would the bottleneck be there if you were capable of having a RAID 0 array with two drives running on SATA Express each? Or would it be hypothetically "double"?

My motherboard only has 2 SATA 3 ports and they are used up by one of my HDD and the other for my SSD. However I have a 2nd HDD but no spare port however could I just free up a SATA port used by the SSD and use that SATA 3 port for my 2nd HDD and use the Express port for my SSD?
Why not just SAS? I see it with speeds of 12 Gb/s and beyond. Sometimes you can find used SAS drives cheaply too. I know that SAS is not not on all motherboards too but there are controllers and host bus adapters.

you say vocally SATA 3.0 is 6 gigabits per second (Gbps) (which is also correct) but on your image written is 6 gigabytes per second (GB/s) which would be 8x more and is totally wrong.
anyone know how to choose what hdd and or ssd you're storing something on or using something on or whatever? I'm kinda new to anything but laptops and decided to get one of these motherboards, and the sata things are kinda confusing. I know I should probably ask this on a video about hard drives, but I'm pretty sure the problem could be relating to the motherboard and/or sata cable. Any Ideas?
The question is, which company develops the first real SATA express SSD. Hopefully these are ones with normal prices availible soon. I hop they sell them in Germany at the same time as in USA, often we have to wait for new products.
I have a crucial mx100 and it's not working full speed :( I get 400mbps write speed max instead of the 550mbps it says on the website.... Seems suspicious

the SSDs for us gamer are god at 120GB. some gof or the higher 240 to 500. but 120 is plenty. you have enough for your core system, core applications and the select few games you KNOW need that extra speed. All the rest is put on to 7200 rpm HDDs usually
I just had a friend that build a computer using a Gigabyte Z170X Gaming 7 motherboard. He put in a M.2 PCIe . He install it on the first m.2 and it took out 4 or 5 SATA ports. After looking around for a few days it tried the second M.2 on the motherboard. That one left all of the SATA ports alone. I myself want to install 3 of the Samsung 950 Pro on my Asus x99 board. I have the 5960x so have the 40 pcie lanes. I'm not a gamer but want to from editing 4K video. It will be fun to see how it goes.

asdfghjkl it's mainly been replaced by M.2 and u.2 which generally use the same 4x pcie lanes as SATA express but use smaller connectors
asdfghjkl although one company (can't remember who) bright out a SATA express front panel to add USB 3.1 to z97
Jonathan Hine what do m.2 and u.2 plug in to?
Linus: "4K content, maybe not on this channel"
BURRRNNNN....
+Rishabh Rai "i'm gettin' the glares"
But does it really matter on a youtube video? I don't care about seeing the individual pores on Linus's skin.
just refreshed the channel and a new video appeared. LINUS IS A WIZZARD!
Yes 😎
Over a year later and I have never seen a Sata Express SSD on any website ever
Awaiting postage :D www.komplett.no/product/857462/datautstyr/harddiskerssd/ssd-25/samsung-950-pro-512gb-m2-pcie-ssd
boomkineu that's m.2 not sata express, still a nice drive though
+PraiseTheSun20 M.2 needs sata ports to operate. 4 i believe. Or disables pcie lanes. Choice is yours.
+PraiseTheSun20 then you order on the wrong websites

Link me a Sata Express drive please
I loved the awkward pause when the 4k comment was made halfway through the vid. I literally felt uncomfortable watching it. It was awesome.
jimmiequick I just couldn't stop laughing.. I didn't hear a thing he said for about 2 minutes after..
at 4:37... i died.

gigabit per sec : Gb/s
gigabyte per sec : GB/s
Just saying.
Why is Linus the only one on Ncix who echoes?
Yeah he does echoe. Maybe it the mic?
***** Pretty sure it's the new building, it's a HUGE open space with stone walls, needs some padding I reckon
***** Nah it's because of the room they use.
OMG I thought that was my sound card! All this time I've been messing with the sound effect settings.
Because he is the Boss
cheeky Linus is back and i am subscribed again.
i stumbled upon your RUclips, i'm not disappointed
Hmm... Echo-tastic in the intro, not so much in the meat and potatoes of the video. Awesome explanation and video as always Linus!
When you talk about Gigabits, it should be written as Gb (small "b"), your text in the video shows GB (which is used for Giga-bytes). Keep up the great work, I enjoy all your videos.
Please tell me how to obtain the SATA Express cable. I cant seem to find it one Amazon.
It's about time they do something!
Oh my goodness............ He actually didn't confuse "Gigabits" and "Gigabytes"............ It's a miracle!
But does it blend?
The only thing it has is more originality than you ever will.
hay! this trend is dead from what I can see. So I am bringing it back.
IronSoldier please, just leave it to rest in peace.

isn't gigabit/sec supposed to be Gb/s instead of GB/s?
Just hopped in from WAN show. How times have moved!
PCIe SSDs are where it is at!
Not only are they unbelievably fast, but you have two less cables to "manage" per drive.
eight ssd's? damn linus u crazy
*in raid 0. He ain't crazy. He's insane...and I'm envious.
Majin Krocket He got them really cheap because they were refurbished. I would totally do that too if i had the chance - and the money of course :P
TechAndTipsGamer i have 4hhds in raid 5 and a samsung ssd and i'm already running out of space. (i cant even use the floppy bays and have no 3,5 bays left.)
Where did he fit so many? Or does he use a rack mount server case?
Laharl Krichevskoy They're all shoved next to the cable management in the back of his case. I find it hard to even use 100 GBs of space.
And really how much better would the reads/writes be from 2 RAID 0 SSDs to more than that?
@4:26 he says say-ta instead of sa-ta, finally Linus validated my pronunciation of the abbreviation.
at 1:00 you said gigabit per second. But the top left said GB which is gigabyte...so is it gigabyte or gigabit?
+ 1 for the amount of details in the video.
so in order to utilize sata express u have to have an ssd with a sata express input?
Where do i get the sata express cables and connectors ... wd 1 tb harddrive and asus 797 sabretooth mark 1 mobo .... ?

your good video makes me want to buy something from your guys site next time.
You should probably leave an annotation to clarify that the PCIe bandwidths you talk about are in GbPS not GBPS to avoid confusion.
Great video Linus! I always learn so much from you!
That SATA logo lol, its the logo from the flight company in the Azores, Portugal
Great vid, learned a lot! By the way, I just love the fact that you used the SATA Azores Airlines logo on the thumbnail for this video, immediately caught my attention when scrolling through what to watch next. Any other Portuguese viewers out there? Make yourselves known!!
You should do a review on sound absorbing studio foam, and put it in the room you are in, cause the echo is starting to getting annoying.
Lesson learnt; never listen to linus for more than 5 minutes, when you have a headache -- information overload!
My Question is this. Should I plug my SSD into my sata exspress slot or sata 6? If I plug into my sata express slot will I be slowing down my 2 graphics cards because im sharing my PCI lanes?
Linus has worked on the show for years but he still doesn't know the outro music... face palm... lol JK love you bro (no homo)
i hate when people don't the outro music
You've probably been alive for years but you still can't type English?

I'm still on X58, waiting for DDR4 drops to upgrade. XD
im still on 775 waiting for money in my pocket...
I'm waiting for SATA 4 which, if I remember correctly, should come out sometime in the beginning of '16. By that time we should have both DDR4 (should come out in the early parts of '15, I hope) and better 4K support ^^,
Superbia90 linus said it will be to much power consumption so to hot
It may be wise to wait for the second generation of processors and chipsets that support DDR4. Remember the disaster that was the DDR3 introduction?
I'm still on rPGA 989 Arrandale, waiting for it to die...
forgive my confusion, but what was the single red port sata express that I had on my laptop for exterior storage? 2.0? Don't understand why sata express now needs 3 ports for one function. Why not a single 20 gb thunderbolt or a single cat 6?
Did they add extra PCIe lanes to the board so I can keep my SLI lanes?
B=Byte
b=bit
They're different! You should know this by now, linus!
This nerd has all the andswers. Thanks!
Argentina 2016... still using hdd and sata 2 for pre-built PC s... mine is sata 3 but i have not an SSD...
I am surprised to see NCIX using Sata logo (an air travel company from the Azores).
so let's say I buy one of those boards Linus is showing off, and I fill all of the PCI-E slots with add-on cards (graphics cards, sound card, maybe a NIC or RAID card), would that mean I've then run out of PCI-E lanes and thus can't use a Sata Express drive, even if I were to plug it in?
Probably a dumb question, but do I have to buy a special cable for the SATA Express chip? Or can I just use my 6 Gb/s cables?
any idea when to expect sata express?
Whooo! Did you record that in your bathroom? ;)
NEXT GEN! MUST HAVE!
I got the 4790k yesterday with msi Gaming 5 z97 board. I only have a regular SSD... So can I use sata express?
You will need a Sata Express SSD
I got the same mobo :)
DavisSgt
Thanks for the answer I noticed that now. I just built my 4790k rigg in a Zalman Z11 Plus just finished and off for some bf4 now.
Why can we not just completely move hard drives over to pci and use pci extension leads for disc drives? Frees up a lot of case space!
So.... where can I buy a Sata Express SSD? Or do I use it with an current Sata 3 SSD?

You wrote GB but you were actually referring to Gb. It would be amazing if we had a protocol with a max bandwidth of 6 GB/s
This is probably a dumb question. Speaking in pure hypotheticals, would the bottleneck be there if you were capable of having a RAID 0 array with two drives running on SATA Express each? Or would it be hypothetically "double"?
the end of the video is super funny ^^

Does 2.m count as pci e for cpu? I mean most pcu's will only run 16 pci e lanes max
Why not just SAS? I see it with speeds of 12 Gb/s and beyond. Sometimes you can find used SAS drives cheaply too. I know that SAS is not not on all motherboards too but there are controllers and host bus adapters.
And... not to be confused with E-SATA which has been out for quite awhile.
And is basically normal SATA just on the outside. or "externally" hence the "E".

How about m.2 express. Will an m.2 ssd plugged on m.2 port run faster than a reguler ssd such as samsung evo?
what about hdd led header ? SataE hdd or ssd works normal with default motherboard led hdd header ? or there is another way ??
Will a standard SATA III SSD like Samsung Pro 850 128 GB fit on a SATA Express slot?

No shit anything is better than a 5400RPM drive, derp.
So can i use a Sata 3 with sata express at 10gb?
That was very helpful. Thank you.
Did this ever actually catch on? I totally forgot that exists
What size SSD is a good size? Do ppl just use ssd for boot and hdd for everything else, or just one big ssd? Note: Gaming mostly

most of the z97 boards
So can you use those sata express ports as regular sata 6gb/s ports?
yup. except for the far left one
Thanks. :)

Linus is the face Of NCIX, and just canada in general.
1:01 Gb(gigabits) not GB(gigabytes)
GB or Gb? You said gigabit and printed GB
+ClassicPork Yeah. I was just about to comment on that. I know it seems nit picky but it should be notated properly for those who know what they are looking at. Don't get me wrong, it is a simple mistake and there is no ball breaking going on here. : )
