The pistons are, (like in any flathead Harley), flat topped, the valves come up from the bottom, and the WLA 45's standard compression ratio is 4.5:1. They weren't meant to go faster than 60-65 tops, but we had ways to raise the compression, boost the engine & give it longer legs. One thing is to swap out the stock engine sprocket for the 34-tooth type used on the Servi-Car trikes, and of course putting a transmission sprocket 1 or 2 teeth larger will bring you up into the 70mph range out on the road. We also have a few really wild modifications, like the 45 Magnum, this involved replacing the stock flywheels, rods, barrels, heads & pushrods with a 57-71 Sportster top end, the difference was phenomenal! There was also using the K Model top end along with reground & re-timed cam sets, although there are performance cam sets out there now that are ready made & won't require you to find a machinist that really knows his business.
The 45 is essentially the grandfather of the Sportster, with the K Model as it's dad You can get stroker flywheels for the 45, plus all of the literature for the 45 Magnum through Victory Library. Victory is a storehouse for all kinds of pertinent information on a good many older Harley models, not to mention that they sell Truett & Osborn flywheels, which IMHO are the absolute best when it comes to either stock replacement, right up to their "Torque Monster" flywheel assemblies. Almost every modified engine that I've ever built used T&O flywheels, and I've never had a disappointment with them. We had another performance trick of using the 4-speed pre-unit BSA, Triumph, or Norton transmissions, which increased the top speed of the 45 markedly. I've still got the information for doing the tranny swap modifications over in storage, so if you ever feel like getting a little crazy, I can make copies of the paperwork & send it to you.
There are other performance mods involving the distributors or changing to a magneto, carburetor mods & swaps, and everyday items like drum brake shoes, (which are pretty standardized throughout the older Harley model line, making them interchangeable as a rule). I've sent an e-mail to the WLA's address with a number of links & suggestions, just let me know if I can be of any assistance.

I think that bike is being held together by memory. Those Flanders risers and handlebars are worth good money. It appears this could be a number job. On the left side of the motor it should start 42 WLA, and then numbers. No title, not sure about your state, but i hope it's not a problem. Good luck, Sean and Craig!

Ignore the naysayers on here that like to make it about them or to show off their "expertise" with their negative and "know-it-all" comments. It's a really good thing that you're trying to bring this bike back, it's a piece of history after all. And restoring it is what it needs. The patina it has is because it's been allowed to sit and rot for years not because of use and it's not the type of patina you want to save. There is nothing you can do to make this machine's condition worse than it already is, they only way is up so keep on going!
Pretty impressive that it made a 5 hour journey after having been dead for so many years.
I'll be following along on this one closely. Great interaction and teamwork between the two of you!!

I don't know what video it was, but at the end when you guys put on that horse costume on made me laugh so hard when I could only imagine what the people driving down the freeway thought when they looked over on the side street and saw that on their way home! Still makes me laugh or smile whenever I think of that! I don't know how long you guys have been putting videos on here but I'll watch them all!

Cool series! With nearly everyone around York, Lancaster, and Harrisburg working at HD...I'd imagine there should be all sorts of help in your area. My wife's from New Cumberland and when we were dating I think half the people she knew worked at and owned Harleys. Surely there's some old dudes who know all about them. :)

Your buddy had that yelling remark down. I was shaking my head, laugh, grind my teeth, and yell then back to laughing.

I love the look of the KPM200 sitting in the background! Wish I could've won during the KPM giveaway to use it to commute to school. Hope everyone that won is enjoying their bikes! Can't wait to see this project once it is complete.

That bike is just too cool. Maybe one day I will be able to own a piece of history like that.

I don't own a bike, but am really enjoying watching this. I'll probably be running against the crowd when I say it was a military bike originally, so should go back to that, regardless of how it looks now.

It is great you are doing a restoration there are many old bikes that people have given up on or have been disassembled and sitting in boxes and the owner either has died or the owner found out they did not have the cash to finish the project or end up at swap meets as parts for sale that get scattered from hither to yon never to be reassembled. I hope Sean, that you have fun riding this bike after resto for years to come along with the Indian after its restoration.
