  • Doris Day reflected on the tall, dark and handsome superstar Rock Hudson and his knack for comedy during a career of varied roles and genres. Starring in three films together, the two first shared the screen in Pillow Talk (1959) and continued on in the romantic comedies Lover Come Back (1961) and Send Me No Flowers (1964).

Absolutely classic!!! Their films are some of my favorites: Pillow Talk, Lover Come Back, and Send Me No Flowers. Tony Randall was absolutely hilarious in all three films. They were absolutely remarkable.
Hearing Doris Day speak about him was so emotional.

Doris Day was not just an amazing singing and acting artist but she was an animal rights activist. I always loved Doris Day but what put her in the Pantheon of outstanding people to me was how she spoke warmly and with deep sincerity about Rock Hudson at the time of his death from AIDS. It was a bold and brave move on her part. "Pillow Talk" not just entertains me and makes me happy, but seeing them together touches my heart.

In so many of the interviews and testimonies I watch and read about Rock Hudson, the word I hear over and over again is "kind". What a wonderful impression to leave on the people you meet in your life to be so consistently remembered as being kind. He clearly inspired respect and affection in the people who knew him and I wish he'd had an easier go of things because it sounds like he deserved it so much. He and Doris clearly had a lovely friendship. Rock kept his promise to be on her show despite being so sick and in pain, and subsequently she spoke about him after his death with a respect and empathy that was rare, even risky for the time. They were both wonderful artists and, evidently, wonderful human beings as well.

He was genuinely kind and loved by so many. This tribute by Doris Day is very sweet. (I have always loved her hair, it’s so shiny.)
“All That Heaven Allows” is my favorite Rock Hudson movie, about a love affair between a middle-aged woman and her much younger lover, controversial in the 50s. It’s available to watch for free on RUclips. I was never a Jane Wyman fan until I saw it, and then I watched “Magnificent Obsession”, which I had avoided because of my “meh” feeling about her, and they were both wonderful in that movie, too. Now, she’s one of my favorite movie stars, even if she was married to Ronald Reagan. 😉
It’s easy for me to suspend my disbelief regarding his homosexuality. How many straight actors have played a gay character? Same thing. It’s a different world now, the world is more comfortable and accepting of our differences, and I hope our gay brothers and sisters don’t feel they have to stay in the closet anymore. My youngest son is gay and it’s just no big deal in our family. 🌈❤️
Rest in peace, Rock, Doris, Tony, and Jane, and thank you.

Doris Day seemed to have an absolutely unique pipe-line to the human life-force if you will. So beautiful and lovely a person, she simply exuded vivacity, graciousness, and an unsurpressable love of life that infused the very air around her. If she hadn't been a real woman we would have had to invent her, as she became an essential source of inspiration.
