    I'm a mechanic and I know exactly what you mean, sometimes after I've done a job such as brakes and I know I've tightened all the bolts i'll still go out with a spanner and check them...just in case..
    I think people in general don't realise the responsibility that mechanics have to make sure that peoples cars are safe after they've worked on them, when i stop and think about it the thought of making a mistake and someone having an accident after i've worked on their car makes me shudder, great video, Thanks

    As an aircraft Techie, I've had that before. We write up what we've done on a job card at the end of each task, so hopefully I don't get that dreaded feeling when you get home. 🙂

    I used to work for a Volvo-Penta agent.. So I'd removed a gearbox from a sailing boat in Chichester Marina. This entaied removing the water cooled exhaust ( for access) and the water inlet pipe from the sea-cock...Took the box to the van, fitted a new cone and shoe (selector) took the box back, refitted and test run it. Job done, home for Beer o'clock.
    So that night I'm in the shower and I do not remember refitting the jubilee clips to the inlet water or turning off the water.... so an hour later at 01:00 in the morning I've got my wife to drive me back the 25 miles to the marina to find not only had I done up the 2x jubilees on the intake, I'd also replaced the fire protection over the pipe, lock-wired it on and tyrapped the electrical bonding cable to it..
    Dohhh.!

    • @pistonbroke
      @pistonbroke  2 года назад

      It's nuts mate, how can you not remember doing all that? But it happens and quite often too. The amount of times I've had to go back and recheck something only to find out it's ok. Sump plugs is the common one. I know I've done it because the spanner is back in my box and not on the oil drainer, I still have to reckeck though.

    As a technician in the marine field for 50 years that oh shot wake up thought cuts to the quick. You do become a robot at times and even though it is second nature the little doubts/ second thoughts appear now and again. Long hours and repetitive Jobs can be a bugger. As I got closer to retirement I became very wary of what I was doing to make sure it was right. Hat of to you Steve mate. Love your videos.

      I think as I'm getting older it's getting worse and every time I recheck, I've done it but cannot for the life of me remember. Having your time monitored doesn't help either.

      @@pistonbroke Totally agree there Steve. My job started when the ship docked and was usually the last one off before it sailed. In the old days we had days and only component repairs. At the end we were lucky if we had 8 hours, for a container ship, and no help from anyone. I loved my job but software killed it for me. Sometimes a software update for a radar could mean having to update all the other bits that talked to it. Manufacturers would pull software updates out of nowhere when you thought you were done. Even the younger guys struggle. Your anxiety level can rise as you get older too. Like you I have many lost hours of sleep before and after a job. Hang in there. Take care Bill

    How many miles had this engine done? By look of Cam area, it looks to have had reasonable maintanance, yet the chain has stretched like a rubber band... Quality that poor or???

    • @pistonbroke
      @pistonbroke  2 года назад +2

      47,000. Early models suffered badly with chains stretching and jumping. 2016 models onwards the problem was sorted and they don't go wrong.

    My brother in law who had a Land Rover Discovery at the time took it for a service on travelling up the road he there was a rattle and the steering loose when he got out and check the wheels both front wheels the nuts were lose. I've seen stuff like that where cars have been to other garages. Gives all technicians a bad name when some don't care about their work. I absolutely have to double check everything for my own peace of mind.

    Strange question but does the old inlet cam phaser pulley have a plastic insert originally?

    • @pistonbroke

      Yes. If you leave it out it will run like shit.

  • @ash7990
    @ash7990 Год назад

    In your experience if the chain on one of these has stretched to the point it won't start, will the valves or pistons be damaged?
    Also what's purpose of that white plastic sleeve in end of camshaft?

    • @pistonbroke
      @pistonbroke  Год назад

      I've seen one where the valves were bent. The white sleeve directs the oil into the vvt sprocket, without it the timing will be all over the place and the engine will run rough and lack power.

    I went to one of these today miss firing, spark plug wells full of what I believe rain water is this something you have come across?

    • @pistonbroke
      @pistonbroke  2 года назад

      Yes I have seen it once before. Rain water doesn't usually get into that area so I can only assume the engine has been pressure washed or the car has been through deep water.

    • @pistonbroke

      The sealant is called Dirko from euro car parts. Same stuff as Mitsi but a tenth of the price. Na I couldn't do planes either, they don't understand the concept of coasting to the side of the road.

    • @pistonbroke
