  • UPDATE:
I have a new video for 2023 which shows you a driverless way of fixing this • Fixing Korg USB Midi d...
Back in 2019 the Windows 10 May 2019 Update broke Korg’s USB drivers causing DAWs and sound editors not to work with Korg devices. The problem was caused by midi slots in Windows and I had a fix for the issue using a few registry changes. Since then, Korg have updated the USB drivers and this shouldn’t be issue but some people are still having the problem. I thought I would update my video and give you links to the latest Korg driver. The best place to download the latest Korg Windows drivers are from Korg’s download site.
    www.korg.com/us/support/downl...
So here is my updated video of fixing Korg Windows 10 & Windows 11 driver issues, I have included my original video showing how to do the registry changes.

Thank you Ian, I wish there was a double like! After 2.5hours of messing the RegEx hack is the only thing that worked and got me working in Ableton (details below)
This is a real redflag as a Software Technical Leader - users should not have to go in the Registry. Korg take note it's 2022 and Users should never have to mess with the registery - this is exceptionally poor show.
    General Setup
    1) Don't plug it in
    2) Download the Korg Drivers Pack - you might be one of the lucky few where it magically works.
    3) Reboot
    4) Boot up the Korg Driver Setup Utility and confirm it's running (Start is greyed out)
    5) Plug in, install the drivers for the nanoKontrol 2
    6) Reboot
    7) Start the Korg Editor, if it magically ticks the box for you to show only connected then you're one of the lucky few.
    6) If you're not lucky and it doesn't recognise - follow the reg hack in this video.
    Ableton
    1) Start up the Korg Editor, set it to CC mode (also hold down cycle+set while plugging in), and switch the Play button to Toggle for Ableton, Send the Data from the Menu
    2) Close the Korg Editor
    3) Open Ableton and goto Options/Preferences/Link Tempo Midi
    4) In the Control Surfaces section, select None, nanoKontrol 2 1 Slider/Knob, nanoKontrol 2 1 Ctrl
    5) Make sure the In: nanoKontrol2 1 Slider/Knob Track is Ticked, and Remote is Ticked.
    6) Remap your Transport controls - you cannot map the Jog or the Transport (if you want this see below but I think it's crap)
    7) Map your sliders and knobs as you'd like!
Ableton other method with Transport but with odd jumping around
    1) Disconnect nk2
    2) Hold down Set and Stop button and connect nk2 until Stop button stops flashing
    3) Open Ableton and goto Options/Preferences/Link Tempo Midi
    4) In the Control Surfaces section, select Mackie Control, nanoKontrol 2 1 Slider/Knob, nanoKontrol 2 1 Ctrl
    5) Make sure the In: nanoKontrol2 1 Slider/Knob Track is Ticked, and Remote is Ticked.
    6) Map your sliders... and er... watch the flickering as it still thinks it's mapped to the volume controls but isn't and jumps to that channel.
    Happy Times

Thank you so much. Using the Korg uninstall utility, I managed to uninstall the 9 first MIDI drivers which I didn't needed. This automatically shifted my XL+ from MIDI 10 & 11 to MIDI 1&2. It then got recognized by the apps. So, I didn't have to modify the registry. Thanks again!!

The Modwave doesn't need Korg drivers but the editor uses a network communication rather than MIDI to talk to the device. I don't think Windows 8 supports that so you have to switch the Modwave into RNDIS mode. You can find that in Utility, page 2. Change it from NCM to RNDIS

I don't know if I'd summon up the courage to go this deep to fix the problem. I've had a Korg M50 for years and the usb midi editor has never worked. I'll download the driver, reboot, then it will say "driver not found". The biggest reason I want it is to use the M50 as a vst. I love the sounds on it.
Someone created an instrument definition file years ago for the M50 but unfortunately it's incomplete. It has the prog patches but not the combi patches. Hard to believe that after so many years, there isn't a .ins file for the M50 to be found anywhere. I'm resolved to connecting my M50 to my Scarlett 4i4 with midi cables. It's also hard to believe that Korg hasn't addressed this issue and come out with drivers that will work, it's shameful on their part.

I can select a sound from the vst and play it on my M50 but no idea how to record a second and subsequent tracks when using only one instance of the vst which is all that's allowed. This allowed the Korg driver to move into the proper slot and be recognized by Windows after tweaking the registry once. Hope that make sense.

Ian I hope you can address an issue I have been facing for years and looked into everything. Today I came across your video here. I have a Korg PA600, connected to my Lenovo Windows 10 machine, via USB cable. I have latest Korg USB Midi drivers.
    A) What works:
    Windows 10 machine is running.
I bring up the Korg PA600.
I get the beeps indicating that PA600 midi connection came on.
On Korg PA600 I select Midi Out.
On Windows 10, I run the Korg USB configuration set up.
    OK it.
Now I can use Midi OX or Cakewalk and receive MIDI messages from Korg PA600 and everything works.
    I play, record, playback etc.
I can do these usually for hours if not days without issues.
    B) What does not work?
Often times, for no explicable reason, the MIDI connection gets broken.
I can play Korg PA600 -- but Midi messages do not come into Windows Machine.
But I can send messages from Windows 10 and they play on my Korg PA600.
Once I get to this state, there is nothing I can do to play on Korg and get midi messages in Windows.
I have to switch off Korg PA600 and do steps in (A) again.
It has been frustrating to say the least. Repeat steps in A again and again, and also loss of context on the PA 600.
    My question to you:
Do you know why this happens? Is the Windows 10 Korg USB driver goes into some stale state? not sure why
Or the Korg PA 600 midi code is getting into stale state?
Clearly these are different issues from what you are covering in this video.
Thought I will post it here, so you and/or other users can share your wisdom and insights for me as well as others who may be experiencing issues similar to mine.
    Thanks in advance Sri

Can you tell me how to do this? What specific item on the Device Manager?

I think Korg PA600 Output side is where the issue is.
As when I turn its power off and on again, everything starts working again.

Hey, first of all thank you for you videos on the Korg usb midi drivers. It seems that if you installed olded usb drivers in your system... the new drivers in not working and the experience is exactly the same as the old drivers. So the new drivers is a joke! I uninstalled all old Korg usb midi drivers and stick with only the new one installed on my system but it doesn't work and that's all... I think I've confused Korg with Nord lol! I wish I knew how sh*t Korg is with Win10/11 beforehand. It's criminal that a company sells a consumer product in the full knowledge that it's not fit for purpose, and expect the buyer to scramble around on forums and YT looking for solutions. Is there a way to get Win10 to "forget" a device has ever been plugged into a USB port? I've uninstalled device, drivers and Korg Kontrol Editor but, for example, if I re-plug in the device it still loads the Korg drivers not the default Microsoft midi ones.
