Elizabeth Holmes is an American former businesswoman who was the founder and chief executive of Theranos, a now-defunct health technology company. Theranos soared in valuation after the company claimed to have revolutionized blood testing by developing testing methods that could use surprisingly small volumes of blood, such as from a fingerprick. By 2015, Forbes had named Holmes the youngest and wealthiest self-made female billionaire in America on the basis of a $9-billion valuation of her company.[3] The next year, following revelations of potential fraud about Theranos's claims, Forbes revised its estimate of Holmes's net worth to zero,[4] and Fortune had named her one of the "world's most disappointing leaders".
The decline of Theranos began in 2015, when a series of journalistic and regulatory investigations revealed doubts about the company's technology claims and whether Holmes had misled investors and the government. In 2018, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission charged Theranos and Holmes with deceiving investors by "massive fraud" through false or exaggerated claims about the accuracy of the company's blood-testing technology; Holmes settled the charges by paying a $500,000 fine, returning 18.9 million shares to the company, relinquishing her voting control of Theranos, and being barred from serving as an officer or director of a public company for ten years.
Holmes's career, the rise and dissolution of her company, and the subsequent fallout are the subject of a book, Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup, by The Wall Street Journal reporter John Carreyrou, and an HBO documentary feature film, The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley.

Psychopaths do NOT typically experience fear or any sort of anxiety based emotion and their lack of empathy means they also can’t relate/experience someone else’s fear. One of you just said they can’t feel most emotions but they can sense fear. That is TOTALLY wrong.
Mark, the word you’re looking for in every video is “subconscious” not “unconscious.” No one is doing anything while they’re unconscious…It’s subconscious.
All these points probably sound incredibly trivial but you guys are 4 incredibly smart guys with a massive list of credentials. You guys are way too smart to be saying complete garbage like this.
@@lukycharms9970 it's contradictory that you say "depending on how nervous she is" when talking about her voice, then state that psychopaths are incapable of feeling nervous/anxious/stressed and the like. They can certainly feel stress if the potential outcome could be bad for them. It is coming across pretty trivial in the way you're portraying what the panel are insinuating. After all, there were no good points in your comments regarding this (almost 2 hour long) video.
@Luckycharms, he misspoke on saying Wal-Mart instead of Walgreens. However, the Walden family who owns Wal-Mart, had invested in her company. It happens. It was an honest mistake. After discussing both companies, he confused them. It's really not that big a deal.

@@lukycharms9970 you should read the latest coming out of psychology...there are plenty of experts saying that psychopaths can indeed experience & sense emotions, including anxiety and fear. Plus, I think the guys were well aware that Holmes was altering her voice deliberately.
I had a 30 year career in hematology and immunology. I had to laugh when I first heard about her idea of performing 20 or 30 tests on such a very small sample of blood. I knew she consulted experts in the field who told her that it would not work but she went ahead and started finding investors anyway. Just her arrogance in going full speed ahead and thinking she could perform some kind of miracle to get this technology to work shows her pathology right off the bat. Also, I cannot believe that her investors did not consult hematology experts to find out if this idiotic idea would work. Her answers about the FDA in this interview are ridiculous. A company does not get to "decide to cooperate" with the FDA. You HAVE to get approval by the FDA for any medical device or procedure that will be used in clinical testing. They don't make surprise visits to "learn from" your company. They visit your company to make sure that you are in compliance with regulations and if you aren't you HAVE to make the changes in order to get approval. There are so many statements that are laughable to anyone with any regulatory or hematology background. I am surprised that it took as long as it did for her scam to be exposed.
I agree. I'm thinking it had nothing to do with whether it made sense or not. All she needed to do was find one gullible person of influence, mesmerise them with her psychopathic ability to charm and lie. Once she had someone on board like Kissinger, the rest jumped on board, no questions asked, thinking the first must have done their due diligence, and not wanting to miss out on the 'next big thing'.
And to top that, she claimed her proprietary equipment could perform 200 tests from a single drop of blood.

Not that they can’t afford it, because it’d be like the average Joe investing a grand or so, but I’d have loved to have been a fly on the wall during some of those phone conversations or in person meetings when one screamed at the other if they even checked it out and the other one saying he thought the other guy did! Beautifully argued and written, obviously coming from a position of pure and authentic professional integrity and solid sense of what this means. However, you perhaps inadvertently put your finger on the legal wiggle room Ms. Holmes gave herself in the language she used, which amounts to sophistry without out-and-out lies, at least as to 2 big instances you mention. “Decided to” (comply) and “learn from” are super-misleading phrases that from a legal standpoint are (and certainly can be construed as) technically true, however misleading. Holmes can plausibly be said to have “decided to comply with and not violate compulsory policy” (which indeed is to “decide” something), and when regulatory authorities do some kind of audit to confirm or ascertain compliance, that is indeed an effort to “learn [something] from,” albeit that “something” being whether or not compliance occurred. So Holmes crafted some very cunning sophistries here that clearly mislead, but seem to keep her safely out of a legal definition of lying. I’m not sure of her legal duty not to mislead in such a situation/context, but it’s clear she studied, practiced, or was coached (probably all 3) in these distinctions to minimize her legal jeopardy. Your observations are just about 100% spot-on, Dr. Petzoldt, except Holmes is playing on the difference between entrepreneurial (some would say “huckster”) discourse and academic or medical scientific discourse. With her “entrepreneur” hat on, society and much of our legal doctrines give her much broader latitude to “puff the product” to the point of gross exaggeration and a certain amount of sophistry. The case really underscores the complexity and difficulties of contemporary blurring of the lines between science and commerce, an ongoing and escalating pattern, problem and challenge in our culture, with this case being an extreme illustration of the broader issue/s.
I’m by no means defending Holmes. Quite the opposite: I believe she deserves to go to prison. But I’m also interested in exploring problems in our legal institutions and laws, and changing academic and scientific moral norms in this commercializing direction, entrepreneur-izing everything. In this sense one can see a clear thread connecting the opiate (OxyContin etc.) scandal (“turbocharging prescriptions”), the Boeing tragedies (profits first, safety last) and similar scandals, including the college admissions fraud and bribery cases. When everything is “business is business” we seem to get deeper into these sorts of difficulties.
She believed in what she was doing. She hasn't lied. She genuinely believed her company would deliver the goods one day.
Make a business mistake in America and your life is over.

I’m totally fascinated with this show, so a couple of nights ago I played a game with my husband. I told him he had to tell me three stories. Two needed to be true and one a lie. When he was lying his blink rate almost completely disappeared. He held eye contact way too long, and then he smiled. It was awesome!!!! Then I played the game, and when I was lying I held eye contact way too long. I honestly couldn’t stop myself. I thought I could beat the system with what I’d learned, but nope.

I don't understand. If she knew she was fraudulently promoting a technology that didn't exist, what did she think would happen? Did she think she'd never get caught? Did she think she could continue to stall investors for the rest of her life? Did she not have the foresight to see that doing that would turn out badly for her? I am a chemist and worked for a very large Pharmaceutical/medical equipment companies, I have been involved in FDA new releases as well as compliance with other aspects of already approved and ongoing drugs and machines. I am in total disbelief that this woman has gotten away with such a huge scam. She does NOT have technology to do what she claims to have. FDA compatibility is not a big mystery they just want to make sure your devices or drugs are made consistently, documented properly and perform consistently. FDA requires that your documentation is never destroyed or erased if a mistake is made you need to document the mistake and prove it was a mistake not an act of fraud. AND BTW EVERYONE who makes medical devices and medications HAS to work with the FDA. She keeps saying they are voluntarily working with the FDA , they have no choice . And Quality assurance includes not only the production of the machines but also the efficacy and reproducibility of what those machines do. They may be inspected by different teams within the FDA but her claiming this was a quality systems inspection does not exclude the efficacy of their product.

@@dqverify6797 Well, I guess they didn't get away with that. I'm not sure what their reasoning would be because if you are diagnosing people that is certainly a medical procedure. I haven't really followed this because I found it rather distasteful that this young fraudster could manipulate so many people. Well, if I want to be honest it sounded like she was a good looking young woman who used that to finance her start up based on a technology we just don't have yet. I figured it would be exposed sooner or later and I really feel sorry for any patients that fell for this. I would not expect them to doubt the credibility of something that is installed in their local drugstore.

After seeing this video, I am reminded of 2 things about Elizabeth Holmes. Narcissistic personality disorder - a mental health condition in which people have an unreasonably high sense of their own importance. They need and seek too much attention and want people to admire them. People with this disorder may lack the ability to understand or care about the feelings of others. And a bit of Antisocial personality disorder - a mental health condition in which a person consistently shows no regard for right and wrong and ignores the rights and feelings of others. People with antisocial personality disorder tend to purposely make others angry or upset and manipulate or treat others harshly or with cruel indifference. They lack remorse or do not regret their behavior. Odd thing that she started a family during her trial....
I believe you should start evaluating the people who are being taken in by these con people.
Showing my age here: the original tv series "Hawaii 5-0" had a two part story about a lady doctor who developed a test using a single drop of blood to tell health conditions. In the court scene at the end Jack Lord gives her a supposed sample of his blood. After she comes up with results he reveals it's just a spot of tomato juice. Probably in the late '60's or 70's.

As an ordinary female of a certain age, the first thing I noticed that put me off and told me there was a problem with her, was her messy hair. Women can’t get away with that above a certain level, her hands reminded me of a (UK) sixth former giving a talk and sinking but trying to rescue herself. Her hands are small and looked sweaty, they flapped uselessly. It’s hard to believe these top companies thought she was the next big thing.
It’s very affected. The messy hair, throwback turtleneck sweater, etc says, “I’m too busy with Important Things to trouble with fashion.”

Yah. I've been through a half dozen FDA inspections on the food manufacturing side. No company "volunteers to work with the FDA so they can learn about what you do." You let them in or they get a court order to shut down your facility.

A pretty big tip off is what she was doing. "Give me money and I'll make the world a better place. I'm *only* doing this to help people. Don't you want to help people? And get rich while doing it?". Yet somehow making the world better requires making her a billionaire. Same shtick as the the Ftx guy.
OMG when the camera froze on Scott while Chase was talking around the 1 hour and 1 minute mark. I had taken a sip of water, then I lost it, started laughing hysterically, and water went up my nose and sprayed out of my mouth! I haven't had one of those moments in awhile. Chase's facial expression and laughing got me. Hahahaha.

I’m impressed by this panel style. Usually someone is alone and expounding upon what they see and interpret. This is more easily followable. I rather like the idea that she robbed the rich but it’s important to remember that people were subjected to these tests and came away with bad results. The investors weren’t the only victims. In fact all they lost was money that they’ll have no trouble replacing. People were hurt.
We only hear about the big money investors but she fleeced any number of ordinary people too, including family friends. I know it's nothing compared to health but there were people who lost money they couldn't afford to.

I'm an executive with a large international investment bank. I work in Palo Alto (former home of Theranos), the heart of Silicon Valley, and have interacted with tech executives and local VCs often. I have to say you guys did a great job in analyzing tech CEO/VC behavior and speech patterns. And I agree that many are narcissists. Full Disclosure: Many investment bankers also exhibit narcissistic behavior...

@1:08:15 - after the interviewer asked "is it TRUE?", she got lost, her voice was shaking, about 15 seconds later she looked down and her eyes screamed terrified, I thought she was about to burst in tears; she did that few more times later on;
in both interviews she was dancing around the questions a lot, she wanted not to admit anything bad, and make good impression to spark confidence in the audience, but few times her voice was shaking and breaking and face expressions were plain creepy 😅
Her many borrowed behaviours cobbled together form such an eerie, inhuman caricature. It like she’s studied & stitched together the mannerisms of all those she admires and deems powerful. Thinking that mimicking those behaviours will imbue her with power and its attendant respect. Watching/listening to her is so unsettlingly spellbinding.

How can anyone be comfortable with that kind of treatment from their church?? Scott’s question as to how she got those first few influential investors, and all of your general shock at why these people invested is answered when you understand she wasn’t approaching these men as a CEO or even inventor or engineer; she approached these men - who were powerful but, critically, not VCs - as a favoured grand daughter. Watch her with Bill Clinton and you’ll see it loud and clear. This is a “one of us” operation - which she herself was probably genuine about at first, because outrageously privileged people like her (daughter of one of the Enron criminals, don’t forget) believe in their own genius, and even more in the genius of the fruit of their loins. They believe that coming from wealth is a proof of character, of intelligence, of competence, rather than simply of luck. Her older, friends-of-the-family investors like Schultz knew her to be “one of them” probably knew her growing up - they wouldn’t dream of questioning her as they would a stranger from a different socio-economic group.

To build on your thoughts though, I would add there is no shame in elder family and acquaintances supporting and encouraging younger members, especially grandfathers to granddaughters. This is a time honored practice. But this young woman used this granddaughter role to use these men to her advantage.
I believe she initially appealed to some people in the guise of seeking mentorship. I can't remember the details from the podcast I listened to some time back. It was when she was still an undergrad and before she deepened her voice. She likely inspired the male protective instinct and appealed by her general air of precociousness.

Being in the laboratory software field, I watched Theranos from the beginning. In theory the technology of small sample testing of a wide number of tests is something that someone may well develop, so I didn't think it was impossible. The first strange thing was the high degree of secrecy, while other companies are developing proprietary diagnostics, no one else has that level of utter secrecy. The big key was the Walgreens deal which got in a small number of sites AND DID NOT EXPAND. If the technology worked, she would have expanded quickly. The fact that didn't happen told me that something was wrong with the technology.
When it unraveled, I was shocked about how no one there seemed to know anything about routine laboratory work. There are lots of laboratory technologies. The first thing you have to ask about any laboratory test, no matter what technology you are using, is: Does it provide accurate results. And no one seems to address that. Even in this talk she shifts the discussion about comparing containers, not results. This is a simple process. In fact every laboratory in the country checks the constancy of their results for every test they offer every day. They take two (or three) samples of known value (commercially available) and run them to see if the instrument produces the expected values. It's simple, it's routine.
Apparently no one checked that.
Some day i do believe that there maybe technology for a device that does do multiple tests ...but not all medical tests ..because there is just too many medical tests for the human body .and ..the technology isn ready for that yet ....she was before her time and sold a dream ..and decieved people based on that ...

A lot of people checked that. A lot of people said what you are dashing. Read the book Bad Blood. She just lied and scammed investors. That’s what con artists do. They find victims who aren’t as skeptical as they should be.
Once she got some credible people on board by somehow manipulating tiny bits of data and outright lying her way into sounding convincing, greed consumed the rest. FOMO, as the book says.

Her mannerisms, dress, deep voice, speaking style, seating stance (with leg propped in boy style), and even her unkempt hairstyle, are the same things I adopted when I was a little girl upon hearing my father say he wanted a boy. Didn't really work, he still wanted one. Oh and that non-blinking thing is creepy as hell. EDIT: Ok, this is happening a lot. I have a 30 career as a patient with ATTP. Blood tests are part of my life. I lived in the Silicon Valley when the Theranos idea was first public. I immediately called BS. I thank those who exposed this fraud before many patients were harmed. My heart goes out to the patients who suffered under this canard. Hooray for a strong judge who sentenced this liar to jail. I also feel so sad Elizabeth selfishly brought 2 babies into her crazy life.

In Denmark many years ago now, a con woman ended up as museum CEO. She was apparently very charming and NO ONE on the hiring panel thought to check her credentials (which were all false). Like Greg says "surround yourself with experts ..." - once one of the big names jumped on the wagon the others may have thought that this was enough of a validation
If all of these high powered people are part of her board of directors, what the heck does a board of directors even do? They can’t ferret out a scammer with all of their “experience”. They sound incompetent!
