My first playthrough, I went in without getting to Karlach and accidentally started a race war between the Druids and the Tieflings. It was only after did I find Karlach and she said I was responsible. Huh? I killed the Druids with the Tieflings, and as my character is a Tiefling, I felt like it was only right to do so. Halsin was freed, he held no resentment towards me, so he was my companion. Wyll died during the very first goblin fight, so I couldn't recruit him, and I stabbed Minthara in the back since I was going to kill her anyway.

I mean Astarion and Laezel are evil. It's just not a symmetrical dynamic because they don't leave if you do good things, and the player doesn't choose to kill them most of the time even if a good character logically would.

@@ElectricalExistence I think there is a very interesting conversation to be had on the topic of what exactly evil is and where the 'being a product of one's culture' lies in that space. I personally am inclined to agree with you because I think evil is linked to selfishness and Laezel is infact extremely selfless.
That said, those 'brutal' actions are ones most people would consider at minimum unacceptable and very well despicable. And I think most would agree that heinous actions don't become acceptable because they have any sort of good motivation. And in Laezel's case she does have moments of showing a sadistic edge which makes the borderline that much messier.
In the context of the game/an adventure group it would make sense to me that an evil party would be happy to have someone more than willing to do bloody work, and who in return finds herself downright turned on by a leader who weilds power and cuts down innocents. While a good party would be uncomfortable and not trust her, or be willing to overlook her being a githyanki in the first place.

@@megasauruss One does not preclude the other, rather his life experiences are why he is evil. (Although plenty go through similar experiences and do not turn out the same way, so it would be more accurate to say his reaction is equally responsible, indeed the character of Hope in the game serves as a relevant example in that regard)
The way that the world has treated him, has made him a rather selfish individual, and a monster made is still a monster. If that comes across as a little strong, I would remind you that he approves of most of the actions of violence, deception, and unscrupulous ambition that you can display ingame. Indeed he is the first character to suggest taking control of the cult rather than destroying it, which is literally the evil ending of the game.
Then there is the matter of his century plus reign of committing crimes for his master. Obviously there is a degree of coercion involved here, but its important to take in the subtleties of how he talks about these incidences, indeed he holds greater grievance with being made to do things for a man he dislikes than showing any sort of guilt or remorse. This is best demonstrated in his meeting with the gur tribespeople early in act 3. And at the end of the day it is a tremendous amount of wrong doing that requires him to be held to account for justice to be had.
It is of course important to mention that you as the player have the ability to push him to be a better man or his worst self. He is a nuanced character, not the exaggerated evil common in fantasy. (Interestingly given how fantastical his story is on the surface) But I would absolutely argue that he is a great example of the more mundane evil that populates our world. One which is very commonly backed by past tragedy.

I mean. I really don't see how Karlach would possibly tolerate you slaughtering the tieflings... They made that choice for a reason. Same for wyll. And the loss isn't that big a deal if you are going evil route because they are such good people anyways. They don't fit the vibe.
For fairness sake you could argue for getting more than just Minthara, but a tiny amount of people play evil paths in rpgs, and companions are a lot of work, I don't fault larian for only making the one.

the only logical way that would work is if you knocked her unconscious, pick her up and make her a prisoner at the druid grove effectively sparing her life. But even then there's no story way that you can make that work.
What they will probably do is add in 2 new evil companions in an enhanced edition of the game that you can recruit in act 1, or people who are perfectly fine with you murdering the grove. A few options that could work are a one of the theifling warriors at the druid grove or are angry about the ritual, who can be persuaded to join in destroying the druids. Another would be Kharga and the shadow elves. Creating a parallel story where you cast out the theiflings, make a pact with the goblins not to destroy the grove, and she joins you in place of Halsin. Or the shadow druid cast her out once they are done manipulating her to take the grove over, and she no longer cares if it burns

This did not make sense to me. My first run I attacked the evil druid, and instead of her fighting me with all her strength, she sent a few druids out to kill the Tiefings, which did not seem to be taking turns which was dumb, as I was still new to the game, and fight slow in turnbased games anyway. Then somehow, possibly the best follower in the game, was locked out, because I killed some druids who killed all here fellow Tieflings.
I ended up restarting after that with a Druid, since my wizard felt redundant with Gale, and I was a wizard without a tank anyway...I might have killed Lae'zel because when I freed her if the intention of killing the Tieflings holding her captive, she said "join me or die" She was way too easy of a fight to be so crazy. I had no intention of killing her until that one line...though in other play throughs, I try to keep her around.
