This is bittersweet Mike. I first learned about this channel when my then girlfriend wanted to run her first marathon before she turns 40. She lives overseas and had no idea what to expect running a marathon major, let alone what a running community is. She stumbled upon your youtube channel and immediately liked it. She then recommended it to me and the rest is history. She's traveled to Chicago twice now just to run the marathon and always looked forward to your motivation vids (*where's 2023 version by the way? lol*) to channel inspiration. I, of course did the same, all while allocating "Kofuzi" funds for potential purchases which led to pairs of Saucony Triumph, Hoka Clifton, Hoka Mach 5, Hoka Rincon, NB RC Elite, NB SC Elite, Saucony Endorphin Pro to name a few. Time flies and that girlfriend who introduced me to this channel back in 2019 is now my wife and to this day, we continue to look forward to your videos. Thank you for the joy and inspiration that you bring to the running community Mike, we'll see you around.... YO!
Great video as always, one of my yearly favorites. I have run this race almost every year since 2009 minus (2020 and 2022) but this year just felt different. I can't imagine a year of not running this race, but also it just doesn't feel the same anymore either.
Couldn't help but smile and grin during your commentary and think maybe just maybe I'll be one of those new runners to do the Chicago Marathon in a couple of years!! Such an aspiration Kofizi. Thanks for such great content.
So happy to see all good things happening to Kofuzi, the community, the energy and the love for running is just infectious, the reason why I'm motivated to go on my runs. Keep up the good work.
Yet another masterpiece of running storytelling. I’ve set a goal to run Chicago as my first WMM, and to meet you and the rest of the KRC community, and while we love your race videos, I do agree that it’s a great opportunity to focus on the days and events surrounding the race too. Can’t wait to see what 2024 brings for this race
OMG the sidewalk chalk is so sweet and thoughtful :) one of my biggest insecurities as a slow runner who is challenged with orientation, is that I get lost when I lose sight of people running in front of me
Great video, as always! Honored to have run along with you on what sounds like will be your last Chicago Marathon. I really enjoyed the shakeout run too and am excited to have made the cut several times in this video. Thanks, Michael Ko, for all that you do!
My first time running Chicago, first time in Chicago, first marathon outside the Uk. So pleased I got to meet you at Fleet on the Friday, one of my highs of the visit, you was very much part of my prep for the race watching every one of your videos, so Thank you🥰 Please make London happen!😊
I'm so glad I came to Chicago to watch the marathon, and meet you in person, Mike! You're a celebrity mate! Looking forward to the next running event, which brings us as all together!
It’s so funny. I just finished my third. I was at 530, which I know is not fast but my PR by about 18 minutes. Every time I cross the finish line I tell my wife I’m 99.9% sure I will never do it again. Within a week I’m researching what I can do to get better. I want Chicago in 2 years. Long story to say you inspire!
Chicago will always be here for what you need it to be. Thanks for putting on a super fun shakeout run. I was ecstatic to make it out this time. I wanted to say hi but ran out of time
Awesome to see your growth and change. It happens to us all. If we're lucky we recognize it as it's occurring and steer that change in a positive direction.
Wow I did not expect the ending of this video. Got me emotional. You will always be an inspiration, kofuzi! Thank you for being one of my motivations to continue running. I hope to be able to run the Chicago Marathon in the future too.
You need to try the Detroit Marathon, it’s not a Major, but it’s unique since we go across the ambassador bridge into Canada and then back through the tunnel to the us a few miles later. It’s close to the Chicago so it would to too much to do both.
Aww the big smile and hug at the end! If this is in fact your last Chicago marathon to run in awhile - what a send off. 🥹 This was a fun one to watch as I didn’t know your marathon/running history! Keep being awesome.
Amazing video and amazing story! I’m really starting to fall in love with the running community! I’m doing my first marathon next month in Philadelphia. Maybe one day I’ll make it to Chicago! ❤
Another great nostalgic video. Relieving my time there last week. Thanks Mike. I made it into the video too at the last minute or so! Yay! Hope the coffee I gave isn’t too bad. 😂
Incredible video as always! Bringing back a lot of happy memories. Chicago was my first ever marathon and it blew all my expectations out of the water. Was also great to meet you just before the shakeout. London up next so hopefully catch you there!!
I relate so much to your story, having 'quit' running completely for about 6.5 years myself, and started from square one at the start of this year. It has to be the greatest lifestyle change I made this year. Running my first half next Jan. As a relatively new subscriber, I have to say your content is so high quality. Keep doing what you do!
What a race. My wife accidentally saw the Kelvin Kiptum just 3 minutes before his world record finish. She was walking from our hotel down the Michigan avenue towards the finish area to cheer runners when she saw the lead car, some other chase cars and the one and only runner, no other runners in sight. She did not know who he was so she asked other people "is he the first one", they said yes. Too bad she did not have time to film him. I'm happy because I ran fast enough to age-qualify for next year. This was the first time even when I time qualified for anything. No more hoping for lottery.
Hahaha you stopped running for 6 years after your first miserable marathon experience. I did the exact same thing. You will ALWAYS remember your first marathon. Great video Mike, Chicago race weekend surely is a blast. Always good to see you out there.
As usual, an amazing and emotional video. It was so cool to chat with you at the Meet and Greet (the fan-boy)... and such a nice surprise to see some screen-grabs from some London running friends (Steve and Kritt). ❤ Hopefully next time I'll be able to join the shake-out! You rock man!🤘
Still have fond memories of PR/BQ in Chicago and finding your videos prior to the race in 2019 (my first Major). Hopefully will get to run with you in a shake-out some day! Chicago is my favorite midwest city.
Mike, even though other creators inspired me in a more direct way to start running more and to eventually run my first half marathon this fall, you are one of the creators that reallymade me see the true power of running in a down to earth manner. You seem like such a genuine person and I admire that. Please keep rocking!
As someone who grew up & learned to love running in Crystal Lake (go gators!) and got back into running as an adult along the lakeshore trail from Lakeview, it's kinda a nostalgia trip in reverse watching this. Really a great video, cheers!
Oh my God, I felt this so hard. I ran Baltimore in 2011 and swore off running for years. In a few weeks at New York I will be running my third marathon of the year. Needless to say this and other videos have convinced me to sign up for Chicago 2024.
Taking a picture with you around Corral H was awesome! I was not expecting to see you there. I was bummed that I didn't attend any of the pre race events. I had an injury that set me back so I did little running before the Marathon. I finished the race under my B Goal time though and am very happy about that. Maybe next year I can join the shakeout. Like your new Novablast 3s!
Sad to hear that it’s your last Chicago marathon for the next while. It was great seeing you at the shakeout and on the course for the past few years. Hope this does not spell the end for other majors too. Major marathon just wouldn’t be complete without bumping into you Mike. I think I’ve seen you for the past 4-5 majors I’ve been to. Hope to see you in Boston and Berlin next year. Fingers crossed. :)
Seems like he'll be more able to be around to be bumped into, since he won't have to be hidden away "staying off his feet" to save his legs for the race.
True. But somehow I always managed to bump into Mike either at the start or on the course for the past few races. I guess I’m just lucky that we always cross paths :)
Current plans are to be in NYC and Boston as a cheer leader. Now Chicago too. Hoping to find a way to get a bib to race London and Berlin in 2024. I’ve never run those races before
