This is the commentated footage of Cheese's 1:38:54 world record breaking run. The focus is not exclusively on cheese, but his game feed is visible throughout.

Im so impressed that ALL THE RUNNERS were EXTREMELY consistent to get to upstairs. Easily the 70% of the time, at least one person was on the upstairs :O

Oh man this just hit me. At 1:43:31 when they said that they'll use his verified run for marathon events. This will be remembered forever as the legendary record to break. Welp, because of c0v10, there hasn't been any events planned/cancelled, and cheese's wr has been beaten twice by Liam and then Simply. Until recently, cheese reclaimed the wr at 1:38:25! So who knows when break the record live will happen,and who knows how long cheese will maintain his new WR. It would be so cool to use that for the event. But of course anyone can beat it before the event lol.

Cheese still holds the record right. Looking at this screen makes that confusing
xodz the gamer the problem was that his 1:38:51 run was not verified on the leaderboards because of a capture card problem that dropped frames for like 25 seconds. So that run, despite being his PB and a WR, was marked as “unverified”, making punkayshun’s 1:39:05 run the current “verified” world record. That’s why it was so clutch for cheese to get the verified world record, live, during a marathon. Truly speedrunning history.

New to speedrunning, and admittedly didn’t watch the full 2 hours, but why is his PB listed as lower (1:38:51) than the time he got (1:38:54)? I know the world record at the time was over 1:39. Was his 1:38:51 PB not eligible for records or something?

I am going to assume you are not trolling and I'll give you a serious answer :)
Apparently, during his pb his capture card had some problems, causing 25 seconds of the run not to be recorded. Because of that it could not be verified as a legitimate world record, which created a meme in the community about "unverified", since that was the only 1.38 people were wondering when the next/official/verified 1.38 would happen, which is kind of why this event even happened, so really no one is more deserving.

I'm confused: it says his personal best was 1:38:51, but that this run came in at 1:38:54. Is that not 3 seconds slower than his PB?
Yeah that confused me, too. ESA replied to a comment saying that the personal best that was shown on the screen was an unverified record (it sounds like his capture card missed 20-30 seconds during that run for some reason). The community I think decided to let him show that as his own personal best but not be able to claim it as an "official" record, since it didn't meet the criteria for verification, missing some of the run
I think it’s saying if he tied with his best bits he’s ever done, he would’ve gotten 1:38:51 at the beginning of the run, it says the best possible time (if you tie with all of your best segments with 0 mistakes) is like 134 or sm

Why is his time say 138 54 but they are saying it was a 138 51?
So cheese had a run where he got a 138 51, but there was some recording issues where the video cut out. So his PB wasn't "verified". So this run is the official WR at 138 54.
This inspired me to speedrun sm64ds

Yes, however speedrunners use the Japanese version of the game because in that version the text goes by faster.
