- In this video I give advice on answering one of the toughest interview questions: What is your greatest weakness? I review why the question is asked and the best ways to answer (along with how not to answer) this tough question.
i hate this question. i would LOVE to answer completely honestly and say: my greatest weakness is that *i need money* and your position seems okay enough that i'll roll out of bed and come to here to do stuff.

Instead of teaching interviewees how to answer this question, perhaps we should be teaching interviewers to simply not ask the question.

@@scharfftank Here's another old saying: "If you look for something hard enough, you're bound to find whatever it is you're looking for".
You know that the question is disingenuous because you're looking for a fault in the person. Might as well ask them why you shouldn't hire them which you admit that's the outcome of presenting a fault you don't like. All you can hope is that the interviewer doesn't think it's a big deal. Picking some form of metric or action that has little importance is still questionable. Your answer is easily rebutted with "So really your weakness is that you have no real experience". You see how that works? The fact you're telling people pick something is disingenuous in it of it's self. There is no right answer to this question because all answers are a vulnerability. You're setting them up for failure which is incredibly cruel.
@@shechshire yes... however, they already know you have little experience based on your resume - and they are interviewing you anyway. So, I would answer Yes, that's what I'm saying (which again, they already know).

It's very sad that an extremely good accountant could fail an interview because he or she isn't so great a conversationalist. It's also sad, that by using these "tricks" to hunt the right candidate, most employers will probably wind up with the politicians (talk well, do nothing), narcissists, psychopaths as well as the salesmen - all people who will most likely not do a great job at being a great accountant. When did verbal communication become the end all, be all of getting hired? Sure, if the job is to be a lawyer, or a broadcast journalist, but an accountant? A data entry clerk? Even most customer service positions don’t require “great” verbal skills - just enough to ask what the problem is, be polite and explain the resolution - more important? Are the skills and the brains to figure out the resolution for the client when they call customer service.
That said, this sounds like a good video with sound advice for answering one of these pesky questions during today's job interview process. So thanks Mr. Tank. However, answering the question with a strength-made-into-a-weakness is disingenuous...but your advice on what to say is not? That I do not agree with. It is ALL disingenuous, no honesty here. Therefore you will be hiring the real good liars.
The 'real good liars' end up in politics and the White-house is full of the 'Best Liars' money can buy.
And by a real good liar you mean someone who took the time to watch a 10 minute video on how to perfect their interview skills? Answering the interview questions with ready-to-go answers may be a bit ingenuous, but it also goes to show that a person is really interested in the job and cares enough to prepare beforehand. Plus, you don't need to be your super genuine self at work really, your priority is to actually DO THE JOB and possess the necessary qualities to do that job.
@@tamarsimonishvili3422 A nervous type, a shy type, a low-self-esteem type and so on -- will have a most difficult time (if they even can) "answer the interview questions with ‘ready-to-go’ answers" sitting in front of a stranger who holds their future in their hands. Let us face it, this would be difficult for most of us. Interviews are a process where you are Judged. Interviews are stressful. For many people very stressful. And if a person is desperate for a job, extremely stressful.
How many of us memorize information or know it. And then stress and the anxiety it produces, just blows that knowledge away? Like thinking of a good comeback … after the fact. Remember those that “do not test well”? That is not just for high school or written tests.
Shy/etc. people “could” be the "best" choice for a particular job. And dismissing them ONLY because they don’t interview well, in today’s process, is a disservice to them, to the employer and to society too.
Here is one example: a "NERD". (typical definition: a nerd is a person seen as overly intellectual, obsessive, introvert or lacking social skills.) Someone like this could very well be very bad on an interview and be fantastic at deep research which is what the job calls for. This is just one example. I'm sure you can extrapolate.
I believe the modern day interview “process” is simply too limiting and benefits good liars more than the average person. Example: conmen are good liars. They have great communication skills and can easily keep a level head during questioning. Conmen would have no issues with “ready-to-go" answers. Psychopaths are also excellent liars. So are sociopaths.
I am not saying that everyone who interviews well is a liar. I am only saying that this process opens the doors to liars instead of funneling them out. And not all jobs require the skill set of “selling yourself”. Maybe not even most jobs. I stand by my original statements. Goodbye and good health to you.
It's only one of many interviews questions -- not the only one. People don't get hired or rejected based solely on this question.
@@mjsousa9762 By your own definition, the people who are inept at interviewing (e.g, nerds) may still be hired. A lot of computer programmers fit this description, and HR knows what kind of personality they're dealing with and makes adjustment. They don't expect the same skills from a software engineer that they do from a sales manager.
My biggest weakness is I am not very bright and a very slow learner. But, I would never do say that on an interview
Thank you! I never know the right way to answer this question. I'm a social worker so it's hard for us to say what we are weak at because we don't want to look unqualified. The way you put it though just sounds genuine and shows we are aware of our problem but will work very hard to gain the experience needed.
Any weakness should be a strength. When you identify a weakness, you can nurture the antidote and gain a strength thus enhancing your character.
Its called smashing through limiting beliefs!
The more you believe in an assumed weakness, the stronger its gets.
Interviewer: What is your greatest weakness?
My mind: My complete lack of self discipline, my inability to take initiative, my terrible social skills, my inability to take charge or be heard in a group. I have also previously suffered depression, existential crisis and suicidal thoughts. Every job I've ever had has destroyed my mental health and this one will probably do the same. I don't have many useful skills. I'm quite lazy, I don't care about many people and don't particularly like them. I have an enormous amount of self hatred and rarely smile or make eye contact with people. Talking to people drains all my energy and my life is a mess. I also just want this job for money and don't care about the job at all. I just don't want to starve to death
My mouth: I'm on the autisitic spectrum but don't worry I'm very high functioning and I always see these jobs as great opportunities to improve my social skills.
I was a little bit freaked reading the reply from your Mind. It's as if you took parts of it from my brain. I say: Who really wants a job? "I want to be your slave and whipping post and underling and spend all my waking time with you." NO. No more. I have worked for a long time and I have learned that most people suck. Your family members are the ones you will consistently see over the course of life, NOT co-workers. Pay attention to family, and forgive family members. Even if you don't NEED your family, those are the ones you continue to SEE. Your co-workers become past acquaintances like distant high school friends. What I want to do is: I WANT to pay attention to my dog, watch tv and movies, stay up late when I feel like it, take walks or dog walks to move around, keep the house up pretty well, go to Church if I want, go see whatever interests me, and read. If I could think of something to make or sell from home, I would. I would work enough to get by and have some extra money set aside for just in case. I don't want to get up early (torture) , dress unnaturally (sadistic TIES!!!), commute (where people actually die every day!) , B.S. with work people I would NEVER want to know in real life, then actually do the work, and stress and work and commute home - and then be tired. Am I supposed to do this because others felt they HAD to? Work life is just a great big bunch of bull shit. It is horrible to waste one's time on Earth this way. Why would anybody choose it? Wanting food and shelter AND wanting a job are NOT the same wants. And to receive the "Gift" of a job, you have to answer F-ed up questions like "What is your greatest weakness." "Tell me about yourself". "(Make up some lies) about a past work situation where you were the HERO!" I can't be the only one who feels this way.

When I hear this question as an interviewee I actually hear “why should I _not_ hire you”. Instead of “why _should_ I hire you.

I would answer the interviewer that the company would lose sh*t ton of money because you are coming in with new unique contributions to their company.

This is one of the questions that I don’t know how to answer, and you are right, I’ve sat in group interviews and most people say they’re perfectionist or they care too much and it sounds so silly. Thank you for posting, this input helps a lot🙂

Whenever I'm asked this question, I just point out the fact that I tend to ask a lot of questions and that could be a bad thing since it may come off as annoying, but I turn it into a positive by saying that it's only because I like to have all my facts straight beforehand. I want to be 100 percent confident in what I'm doing. Would you consider that a good example or no?

My greatest weakness is that I can be quite direct and love to keep things organized and orderly- reaches over and straightens his pin clip on tie and reorganizes the paperwork on his desk. Then ask him if he has any other questions.
One of my weaknesses is collecting ball point pens.
Or any writing instrument for that matter.
So far I have 3 large boxes of them collected over a
20 year period.
20 years into a successful career in sales and sales management i decided to get an MBA (my bachelor's is in engineering). I've lead some pretty big accomplished sales teams, managed many millions of dollars in revenue and so forth. I can tell you that senior people don't get asked that question too often, unless it's by an inexperienced hr person. But when i interviewed for business school, I forgot that i wasn't a senior person that had gotten an interview because of a personal recommendation, but just another schlub. So when i was asked, i genuinely laughed and explained that it had been a long time since i was asked that question. "My biggest weakness is that I don't have a business degree and i really need to change that." the interviewer laughed and we got into a discussion about transferrable managerial skills vs technical or product knowledge. I got in.

Yeah my greatest weakness is that I hate to answer stupid unnecessary questions like this and every interviewer's weakness is that they feel the need to ask it among other stock interview questions. Why doesn't each interviewer create their own or is laziness and lack of creativity their weakness.

Actually i tell interviewers all the time Im still looking for a "Career" that can show a weakness I may have. This leaves the playing field open a little more than it was, and forces them to come to my level because now with that answer, i've made them think one of two ways...Either "This guy is nuts im not hiring him." Or "This guy seems interesting because hes trying to trip me up in my own interview." Yes its a 50/50 chance you take, but why get steam rolled in an interview? If they want your skills and your a genuine person they will hire you. If not, then all they are or were doing is just looking busy with no intentions there at all with you. Because they've already seen your resume, and most likely your cover letter if you've included one. I am one that don't play by the rules. If they mess up, I tend to put the spot light on them first, no they don't like it, but think about it; they are doing the same to you and you have the right to know who your going to work for, just like they have a right to know who's coming to work for them potentially. But the difference is, my answer is actually true, every job I've had, I have done really well and flawlessly. So my answer is honest and true, no matter how conceded it may sound or seem. So to me its all about turning the playing field to your advantage.

@@scharfftank More seriously, I've been quite lucky and I've probably been on 10 interviews to land 5 jobs over 40 years. I don't even recall how I answered the question when I was starting out; I'm semi-retired so it's no longer an issue for me. At more "mature" ages (my latest job I got was after I retired at age 60 and was just looking for a "retirement job" for a few years) I believe I confessed that as I aged I was having trouble multitasking and really wanted to concentrate on one thing. In my industry that can be a killer, but as they were hiring me for my "mature mentoring skills" (as they politely put it) it didn't seem to make a difference. The last "real" interview I had before that was in 1993, and the world has changed considerably since then so my experiences in answering these questions is a poor guide for younger people today. (I had an interview in 1998, but that was to return to an employer I left 11 years earlier; it was more of a formality: "welcome back, when can you start?")
Bottom line: Listen to this man, people!

Hey, I appreciate Scharff addressing this question. I am in sales. I am a real estate agent in Northern Virginia. I firmly believe by knowing your scripts and by having answers to potential interview questions gives you confidence. And the confidence will show. And employers like confident (not arrogant) employees.
If you can nail down the answer to these hard, weird, and frankly stupid questions, which their sole purpose, I think, is to make the interviewee squirm and are possibly power-plays on the part of the interviewer.
Anyways, the job market I hear has changed and employers need more employees. So maybe it's time to ask them similar questions.
Final thought: "my greatest weakness is having patience for stupid questions."

Oh my gosh, wow! I have researched this question several times, throughout my career, while job searching and this was BY FAR THE best advice . Talk about real world real life wisdom! So many people blame the economy about not being able to find a job for several months but then answer the weakness question with the "perfectionist" answer?! I laughed out loud when you said, "the interviewer thinks I am an idiot." Thank you SO much for making this video. I FINALLY came up with an answer for an executive assistant position interview I have coming up. I am going to say my weakness is I don't have a bachelor's degree, which is not required in the job description. I watched 6 videos before this one, and I can FINALLY cross this Q&A off my list and move on to the my next interview question.

I hope I get the job, for the grocery store I'm wanting to work for, but til then I've been trying to brush up on a lot of the interview questions, just in case I didn't. This one being the biggest one. I know that Grocery stores deal with customer service, and being able to interact with basically strangers.
This is the answer I'd give:
My biggest weakness would be pushing myself out of my comfort zone trying not to be as reserved, and shy. Before working for king soopers, I was a very shy person, and I feel like the 2 years that I worked for king soopers and the 5 months of working at a liquor store as a sales associate have helped me tremendously. because both have allowed me to do more interaction with people, and now I feel like I can better talk with customers and help them out with what they need in a quick and precise way.
I think that is a good answer... I'd probably ask if you still feel that this is your biggest weakness?

I have an interview for a bartending role tomorrow which I have never done before as I am just getting out of university so i especially like that you said that i can say i have a lack of experience because I definitely don't want to be dishonest and it was one of my anxieties towards applying for the role. How can I make this sound not self-depleting because I feel like they will turn around and be like oh well we are looking for someone with experience etc. Thankyou
To be fair, these stock questions - "What is your greatest weakness?" "Name a time you overcame a challenge?" "What makes you right for this job?" - do naught but invite generic, rehearsed answers; or, they become openings for an applicant to show her charisma. Questions ought to tease out whether a person will work well in a role, and these sorts of non-queries really do not behoove such purpose.

I've been asked this many times. I honestly say "Trying to understand others who lack or don't care enough to articulate what exactly they wish to convey or express. Maybe I'm a little OCD on that issue but I just find it difficult to communicate with someone who makes lazy attempts expressing there desire while expecting others to dissect their broad generalization in an attempt to figure out just what it is they truly want or wished to express. For example asking someone what their greatest weakness is? Weakness regarding what? My left eye is dominate so I guess I'd say my right eye is my greatest weakness or did you mean something deeper like living with what I consider a bad design the human body that requires daily consumption for sustainment?

Greatest weakness is a tough one. Interviewers are so different. Of course he understands changing careers and /or interviews isn’t easy. If Someone waited and finally after 3 or 4 months post online application assessment saving docs updating resumes etc etc and called in for an interview. In lieu of the application getting “lost in the archives or the shuffle”. And I said my biggest weakness was “I care too much for our guests.” Then not getting the job because of my one answer which he didn’t care for. That’d be silly. I’m sure he’d overlook many of those meaningless answers. He’d Notice character, motivation, confidence, a hunger, a smile, honesty and a true willingness to work as hard as possible. Adding Value to the company is about a persons strengths and ATTITUDE. Gratitude to have a job with the most honest sincere team. Right?! After each hard working day they’re driving home thinking about how well they performed and what I could’ve done better and evaluating oneself. Nope. No Job because of the that one answer regarding a weakness, that he cared too much. It’s a tough gig out there. The Human Resource Department can lack wisdom experience kindness diversity and some don’t have that basic foundation in which the HR department is there. We are Human.
