Ambernic just make something truly premium that emulates psp up to 2x and price it accordingly ....Pass on this one
I think psp should not really be a problem but I was wrong even n64 struggles on these devices that's why everyone was exited for the Odin atleast they can afford a chip like a sd 625 which is just enough for psp 2x without any frameskip nonsense.
I agree. I would much rather have a higher power cpu then an oled screen at this price range. retroid pocket 2 had at the very least psp emulation nailed down years before this.
Ambernic has gotten way to comfy at the top
N64 and psp run GREAT on my anbernic even more underpowered 351p. You have to install a better OS. The stock emulators don't work as well.

I think what makes this stand out is the moonlight capability that this can do. You can launch higher end emulators through that as well so then you would have access to everything in that form factor.

Ok I was NOT expecting wifi & moonlight. That basically uncapped the potential in terms if what you can play when adding a gaming PC into the equation.

4:3 playing will leave that square burned into the screen. The side bars will be a different brightness over time.

Kind of true since it's an OLED. Perhaps a way to add a photo or something where the lines are so so it wears the screen in a similar way to the middle.

@@Adam-vx6to this is an older oled panel. Like he said it's same one that the vita used which at this point is 10 years old and OLED wasn't as good back then. It can be reversed though by inverting the colors.
I've run emu on the oled vita screen for years and that thing has no burn in, it just doesnt get hot enough for that damage to build up. I'm sure this will be the same story
Don't wish it had a 4:3 aspect ratio man it's an oled the black bars don't emit any light at all
And 4:3 letterboxed in a 16:9 screen is way more preferable than 16:9 letterboxed in 4:3
It’s also better since 4:3 I a 16:9 screen still keeps the same vertical resolution while a 16:9 resolution in a 4:3 window looses quite a bit if vertical resolution
Great video, and it really is sad there's only 1 gb RAM, I think in this day and age, nearly nothing should have less than 4gb.

Look at smartphones, over the past 10 years the average smartphone RAM went from 0.5GB to 4GB (that's x8), yet apps close in the background all the time. People should demonstrate for more optimized software.

@@thesuperzfamilyvlog6607 4 gb ram runs windows and some other stuff just fine for most web surfing. People who aren't interested in gaming will probably pass on it while most gaming rigs have atleast 16 gb ram which btw is atleast 60$ (ddr4 at 3200mhz) for which you can get a apu (athlon 3000g) .
Taki Udon reviewed this and the OLED screen (which has its brightness artificially limited) is the only thing going for it. When it comes to hardware, software, and build quality it's all subpar, especially for the price.
Yes, that's why I wonder that ETA is talking about the device like it's a really good thing. No word about all the issues Taki had to say. ETA even said that the brightness is great. Maybe just on his device?!

04:15 GBA is 3:2 so would have black bars top and bottom on a 4:3 display. There really is no display aspect ratio that spans the 4:3 and 16:9 eras as well as oddballs handhelds like the GBA and original Gameboy at 10:9.

@@ETAPRIME Hey ETA, have you seen Taki Udon's video on the same device?
He's got totally different experience/conclusion to yours. Annoying stutters on lower-end emulation, bad muffling on the loudspeaker, and poor calibration on the display. He's also complaining about the ergonomics and I kind of agree with him there.
I'm not sure that custom firmware will fix all the issues. And I'm not sure if this is worth the USD $130 they're asking for when you can get the RG351P/MP cheaper or close to it.
And let's not forget the elephant in the room, the Retroid Pocket 2+ is still out there being sold for USD $99.
@@ekinteko i'll take taki's impression with a grain of salt. sometimes he's so wrong it's silly. he loved the display of miyoo mini out of the box while everybody else were mentioning it's murky screen. performance-wise i believe russ also had the stutter on yoshi's island, so that'll probably happen on those kind of games, which are very few. kind of ironic that he doesn't like the ergonomics considering it's fairly close to ayn odin's.

I just may get one of these for 16-bit and below emulation. I would like to see some SNES emulation. Yoshi's Island, Super Mario RPG, Top Gear 3000 and Super Metroid.

It's sad that in a world where you can get some really great handhelds with serious power for $300 or less, you would think anbernic would get a better recipe then what they have. Seems every new handheld has this but not that, or that but not this, or them but not these or that .. .
I see a trend here and it's not going to end well.
The Ayn Neo Pro is 289 with a SD845. Idk what the deal is but that is the only handheld with a good cpu in it

@@xpmon It powered the Samsung Galaxy S9+, so it's still very powerful for these handhelds.
@@xpmon Compare it to any of the other chips you get in these handhelds. Can hardly run Android properly let alone any games. If I wanted to emulate SNES, I would buy a powkiddy or some shit.
With the 845, you can run everything you want in terms of Android games and older consoles. Can even do PS2 emulation

Definitely impressive retro handheld it’s loaded with a good handful of retro games I wish it had more psp and Dreamcast games but it’s definitely better compared to the Miyoo Mini v2 love it’s got a good library of PlayStation original games

Long story short guys it's a handheld device with a gpu that was marketed as a cheap mid range gpu I'm 2018 and a oled screen with a resolution lower than I knew existed.
I really wanted to see a tear down of this.
2 steps back 1step forward. Classic anbernic the amount of devices they have out they should have been elite tier by now.

They should make a black version those black bezels would blend right in but needs more power and ram for sure before I’m interested but oled is the way to go
I feel like Retroid and Ambernic just procure themselves stocks of parts (like CPUs,, screens, sets of RAM) and then they come up with a sort of design that binds them together. That's why we have so many models, so often, that are sometimes really nonsensical, instead of a single good model.
Ayn, for example, is a bit better at this, although they are affected too, otherwise we wouldn't have three different Odin models that are so close to each other in performance but not in price.
It's not to make us a favour, it's just that they got a certain quantity of parts and they came up with what they could.
This explains a lot: difference in quality of each piece manufactured, why they seldom, if ever, listen to the buyers complaints, delay in manufacturing and delivery, continuously coming out with models often unsuccessful or not evolved enough from what is already on the market.
I don't know if you already did your follow up video for this handheld but if not can you show how something like Spawn in the demons hand for the Dreamcast would run on it.
The screen on this is very nice.
I saw yesterday on the news that every chip used on consumer electronics are dropping a lot in prices, I think this will get even better for the next year, but this shows how the company takes things seriously even in shortage times they managed to bring good stuff, thanks for the review!

Of the 3 reviews I've watched for this device this is the only one that had kid gloves on. Didn't address build quality he didnt do his usual tear down and he didnt mention that the speakers are overtuned leading to distortion at higher levels. NOrmally I really like ETA Prime but this is....hmmm....

If the goal is to replace a broken psp, then I would buy a vita. The 503 is a better choice if you also want more flexibility in what you emulate since it can do a lot of things like dreamcast which isn't really an option on Vita afaik, but you definitely will not be able to play all psp games on a 503.

Thanks for the great video, I liked it so much that I bought the console! My RG503 arrived today, however I can't get a single game to work and I have run out of ideas!! I have tried Neo Geo, Mame, Megadrive, GBA, Capcom and Super Nintendo and none of them will load a single game. I press the A button and it goes black then takes me back to the game list. Any idea what's going on?
Does this come with these emulated games preinstalled or do you have to source the games?

Any chance of you trying N64, SNES, and Saturn emulation? Reviewers are Sheedy reporting major issues emulating those consoles.
Can you compare the brightness of 503 with Vita? Is it possible to use AMD link instead of moonlight?

He was having sound issues on his and there seemed to be issues with the brightness levels. That and seeing that the battery was a weaker type where the mold seemed to be ready to fit a bigger type to last longer. That and he was having issues with certain games.
Whatever the case may be, along with the RAM, I hope they listen to user feedback on it.

Other reviewers have complained the dpad and buttons are grinding against the shell, did you notice it on yours?

@@FakeLibra not as a Steam Deck replacement for sure. I have a OXP as well so I’m using that while I’m waiting for the SD. This RG503 is more suited for lower tier emulation. Even then, if you need something now, I’d go with the Retroid 2 or Powkiddy RGB10 Max 2

Other reviewers have so many bad things to say about this device and you mostly had positive things to say about it. Others say bad brightness, you say great brightness. Others complain about the not so good D-Pad as in the previous models and the keys grinding on the shell, you didn't lose any word about these issues. Bad screen borders not being even and dirt getting stuck in there is another thing, you didn't lose any word on that, too! In the video I could see some of the screen protector foil on the bottom left corner. I think it was stuck in there way too tough and you couldn't get it out. Because I already saw this in other videos that the protective foil comes off really hard. Also you didn't really say much about the pixel problems due to the low screen resolution. No word about the really really awful firmware, too!
So I really don't know if you were just lucky with your device as it's often normal with these typical chinese brands that the quality varies a lot, or if it's just not an honest review.
What if the other reviewers are being dishonest?

@@ganganthefatman1382 taki maybe because he has been blacklisted by anbernic and in his review, i got the feeling he was a bit sour. or the issue with the screen border might just be that 1 device that had a defect. but russ from retro game corps. his reviews are always decent. but the brightness issue. well thats going to depend on the person reviewing. whats not bright enough to one might be fine for another
I saw Taki's mentioning this. Makes sense why they also black balled him from getting sent the products ahead of time as well though for pointing it out. Makes me think once he said that other reviewers would also get black-balled if they are releasing the negative. Which isn't right but seems on par for these products and the reviews coming out atm.
@@estylegreesye4384 yeah I've noticed ETA tends to be a bit on the positive side or make any projects seem easy. such as his arcade1up conversion seemed so easy, then when i did it i ran into a million little problems he glosses over lol. it's fine tho still a good channel its just his way. i wouldnt worry about brightness on an oled personally, unless you plan to play it in the sun or something which, weirdo. in my experience the contrast is so good on oleds they always subjectively look bright, whereas much brighter lcd's can look dim to me.

I genuinely almost bought one of these until I saw the Dreamcast performance sadly. It's too bad it only has 1GB of RAM, if it could handle both Android gaming and Emulation that would be perfect. Then again, for the price, it's hard to argue with such a device given the display.

The device looks decent. I've never understood why people care about black bars, as long as you can play at original aspect ratio, I really don't care about the bars.
thats true, but it's just a waste of potential. you buy a device with 16:9 and use it as 4:3 and you're losing 25% screen real estate

@@Awnos of course you do.. if a 4:3 image is not taking up the full 16:9 screen, leaving black bars to the sides, those black bars are wasted space on the 16:9 screen

@@gravious How many 4:3 oled screens do you think are readily available? If they used a 4:3 screen, the price might be way higher. Just accept the black bars. It's like people complaining about bezels. I find it to be stupid. People will complain about a millimeter of bezel. Before you know it, Apple will be making phones that are all screen, front and back.
The other solution would be making a shell that covers the 16:9 screen until it's just 4:3. But you're not getting a bigger picture that way. Nothing changes other than a bit more plastic covering the screen. Is that what you want? If so, then just print some pieces of plastic to glue onto the sides of the screen if it bothers you that much. Or tape. IDK.

Keep everything the same but the double the price with a solid CPU/GPU and it would sell like hot cakes.

Can this run pokemon sun and moon? The pokemon games should be relatively easy to emulate by virtue of not having very demanding physics engines, right?(I have practically zero experience in the emulation scene, so please be kind)
I think someone else tested the dreamcast in a standalone emulator and it worked much better, no?
The thumbstick placement looks very uncomfortable for someone with big hands,. Supporting the unit, switching from the sticks to d-pad or face buttons looks like it;d be difficult for me.
Are they still using RK3566 because of the chip shortage or just because they think people will but it anyway? Big beautiful screen, sure, that's a great thing to have but lackluster performance in today's standard isn't going to cut it.
Screen is really nice on that unit. I'm still waiting for a reasonably priced handheld that can play OG Xbox and PS2 games!

Kinda tired of waiting for hardware that's finally powerful enough. It was fun seeing improvements but it's like everything has gone stale. A55 1.8 is nothing more than a power sipping core.
4 or 6 gb ram paired with 835 or better class chip... problem solved.
It would not sell for only $130 if it came with that chip. But i do agree they could have added a bit more ram

deck for linux, aya/onex for windows, and odin for android. i think anbernic/powkiddy/retroid just need to focus on sub 100$ handhelds if they're not going to put some powerful chip in there
It's like a really fat PS vita with the body style of a Chinese Android device from 2003. I guess the main upsides of this are Wifi and Bluetooth because we're seeing plenty of good screens these days making it not so surprising (they probably could have gotten a decent IPS and dropped the price to a flat 100 bucks, but they probably wanted to make it seem worth more than their last 2 or 3 releases.)

For a great oled screen and amazing psp performance, get a vita. Still use mine today. Doesn’t make sense with this handheld at this point
