Its Crazy how many of us are having this issue. My 21 Sierra has 84000 miles. I get it needs some attention. This part is still on backorder. I plan to limp mine along till next saturday. I have a very knowledable and experienced mechanic buddy that will assist me in tearing it down, doing this rebuild and throwing it back together. I severly appreciate your video. Gives me a look at what Im getting into. Other wise my wife is ready to trade it in. I am so close to paying it off though!!!
If you decide to try this, clean an lubricate the gear box under the metal clips not the screws. Mine had dried black grease gumming up the worm gears. The others looked fine so I left them alone. This is around a 7-9 hour job.
@@53EricdYes, there was no indication anything else was wrong. The other valves looked good. The motors all moved easily when manually manipulated (carefully) none of the seals were bad. I cleaned the gear with the black gunky grease, put in new lube and it now works with no issues.
Correct, 8 hours under warranty. Standard rule of thumb is warranty times 1.5 so realistically a 12 hour job not including diagnosis. I'm doing this for the first time in the dealer, have it halfway torn down right now. I've diagnosed a few this year already. Part is currently on backorder for months. Not too bad so far but getting the hoses off is pretty annoying. These coolant valves are going to be a black eye for the 3 liter along with timing chains
Do you know where the second hose on the surge tank goes? It says "eng" and goes to the front of the engine, but tough to see where exactly it is going.
Based on going through all of this and finding that it was a successful fix, is there any point in taking the rest of the coolant control valve apart? Seems the problem area is the grease for the gears under the metal clips. Would you recommend only taking that apart, cleaning out the grease and, putting in new and then reassembling?
Did you have to drain the whole radiator or did you just pull the hoses and let it drip into your catch pool? After the reinstall, was it a fix? I have heard the grease just bakes/hardens on there and once it’s cleaned and lubed it’s good to go.
I drained probably half the coolant out from the lowest line on that side. After I cleaned and lubed the gears in the gearbox with the clips it is now working normally. Repaired in March now July and all is working normally.
@@justinsumption7638 all good so far….no issues since the successful fix. I failed to put it together correctly the first go. Second time it was great.
@@fisherholmsfly I took mine apart and put it back together but still getting check engine light about every 200 miles. Just been unplugging the battery for about 10 min and plugging back in. Did I happen to put it back correctly?
@@justinsumption7638 Maybe....I didn't get mine right the first go but I knew immediately because CEL came on right away and was doing all kinds of goofy stuff. I didn't get one of the valve seals back in right and it was pinching the rubber. I haven't had my CEL come back since I put it back together correctly the 2nd time...How did the gears look, were they all gummed up or was the grease in there still clean and white?
@@sako4me I say go for it, worst case you can pull out the guts of the valve and run it fully open until you get a new valve. Best case you fix it like I was able to and life returns to normal.
@@nahbro3240 , my temps didn’t fluctuate much when the valve went bad. I waited over 60 days for the part. It’s now been replaced under warranty and all is fine again.

I’m sure you’ll be able to fix it! Make sure you take pictures of the valve positions as you go. I wish I did that.
Mine didnt make it to 32000 miles
Dealer told me to keep driving it. 8-12 on BO, May file AG complaint with the state.
I got that failure at 120 k, dealers charge over $ 3500 I did it in a private shop for $ 1600

Enjoyed your video. Do you believe the "dried black grease" is the cause of your coolant valve issues?

@@firstlast--- are you going to repair the existing valve or replace it?

@@StephenPaul1160 That should be enough to fix it. It would also be wise to check out the other gear boxes and make sure they look good.
Powertrain warranty on this engine is 100k miles by the way

Boy that engine looks tight!! Sure is no 5.3/6.2!
Were you able to re-use the coolant hose clamps, or did you install new ones?
