i recall the first time i saw him do this chart they did it a bit slower and the entire room was in tears it was..like anytrhing else buddy did breathtaking stunning and filled w emotion..thats the word "emotion" its almost like theres no such thing in music anymore and prob. why most of what i hear today doesnt reach me...not in the way this does
speaking of which thats exactly why i dont care for weckle or most of these newer gen cats..all chops no feeling buddy had both i think i try to have both but if its not even a thought in the players mind? then, its just a big NOTHING.
@@arame29 arranged by Bob Mulligan. Beautiful chart! I agree…it is a good competitor to Round Midnight. It’s too bad Summer of '42 didn’t stay in the book
Probably dropped because, even though he had amazing players in his band this trumpet player was exceptional. His control is breathtaking. I always loved the way Buddy supported soloists in ballads...always just enough without overshadowing them.
Speaking of Maynard, I found out that he performed with the Gustov Brom orchestra which performed the chart Pilatus. So that clears that up finally. Anyways Summer of ‘42 is awesome and great to hear another rendition
I've been looking for a recording of this arrangement for almost 50 years. I saw Dave do this live with Buddy in '77 or '78. Never heard it again. I thought he did a wonderful job with it, but Dave looked really pissed afterwards. I never knew why - it sounded great to me at the time. I saw Buddy's band many times. They were always impeccably tight in their playing, but about half the time I saw them the band looked really pissed off. I saw guys throw their instrument stands around, and look like they were ready to punch someone. Road life is tough, and Buddy was known to be rather temperamental, and I think the band's attitude sometimes reflected that. But no question, he was an amazing drummer who attracted great players and arrangers.
Dave has some numbers with the Rebel Alliance Band here on YT and he sorted looks pissed on those too. People say he's just very demanding on himself but I made the point that you're still "performing" and it's best if you look confident and having fun. No shade on Dave's playing tho, he's amazing.
@@eric_in_florida I know several people who played alongside Dave in the Army, on Woody's band, on Buddy's band, and even one who knew him back at Valley Forge Military Academy. They all had great respect for his musicality and work ethic, but would agree that he could be tough on himself. He's only about an hour away from me in PA, but sadly I've never made it over to see any of his local bands in central PA. Someday I'll get down to Texas to see Rebel Alliance in person. Great band, and some great guest artists! I don't think they were around when I lived in Plano in the mid '80s.

Gorgeous chart
I'm told it was arranged by a friend of someone in the band
Competes with Round Midnight for best ballad in the book.

Absolutely A KNOCKOUT PERFORMANCE! WHAT A LEAD TRUMPET PLAYER! Not forgetting the GUVNER ON DRUMS! Paul Budd Brightlingsea Essex England UK.
Superb ballad that challenges Round Midnight.
Stahl,Konikoff,Marshall & Pratt. Killer Force Legends.
Never heard this chart before. Beautiful ballad though.
I agree! Very beautiful
As a kid, I was always disappointed when Buddy played a ballad. I wanted the fast powerhouse stuff! But this is a nice piece, and what a trumpet.

Even better than Maynard's version on MF Horn II (which is also great!)
This arrangement is better.
