I played the jazz trumpet chair in the 3:51 Woody Herman band in 1974. Dave Stahl was the lead trumpet player. To this day, he remains my favorite lead trumpet player of all time. -Gary Pack
I first saw Dave Stahl in 1974 with the Woody Herman Band. I went to see them after the album Young Thundering Herd came out. To this day Dave Stahl is the cleanest, most accurate lead player I have ever heard live. He sounded like Bud Brisbois at his best, but with better phrasing. It is wonderful to hear him playing like this, so many years later. By the way Gary Pack who left an earlier comment, was in that section too.
I could rattle off a list of great lead trumpet players from the last 50 years. My personal favorites are Jon Faddis and Dave Stahl. Their lead playing was/is flawless and the way they both supercharge a big band is absolutely phenomenal. Nos. 1 and 1A.
Trumpet sections are what MAKE a big band and this band has a great trumpet section and brings in great guest players. It's a shame that the crowds they're playing for are so small. Here's an idea: They should go to elementary schools and play for assemblies - expose the school kids to this music and get them interested in it. Let them talk with the players. Get them interested in learning how to play real instruments rather than putting together beats on their phones.
Dave Stahl is my favorite lead trumpet player of all time! Ever since 1976 actually, when he was with Buddy Rich. Still sounds great 48 years later!
He is my favorite lead player also - still going strong !!
Love these guys I can listen to their music all day long
WOW! It's great to see Dave Stahl playing so great. He apparently has gotten better with age. That was incredible!

Crazy good
Brilliant as always. Not sure what the dodgy look was all about at 43sec in (2nd trumpet down from left) 🤔 🎺🎵🎶
Always assume it was a fart.
