    Check your connections on your automatic transfer switch. They can become loose, most units require 45lb torque for the shore power and generator power. The output needs 45 lbs too . Very important.

    Really well explained! -- QUESTION -- We are looking for a Class A and have heard from Liz Amazing and many others, that he best models are made prior to 2008 due, in part, becuase they are pre- all that EPA nonsense that supposidly ruined diesel engines. However, while we are targating Country Coach of that vintage, we are wondering how important all the modern driver aids are, such as lane keep assist, "Comfort drive":, adaptive cruise control etc. Would you prefer to own a Class A with modern technology, over an older but excellent condition Country Coach without DEF and all that stuff? How would you consider this issue?

    • @RVSquaredSteve
      @RVSquaredSteve  7 дней назад

      Thank you very much!
      This is a personal decision that is based upon upon my technical ability and desire for modern features. So, as much as I hate the concerns of DEF systems, it’s a fact you can’t get around if you don’t want the “aging” hassles of a coach that’s going to be 25 years old. In and of themselves, dealing with aging motor coaches and the problem with parts availabilities, they both have distinct disadvantages.

    Great Video Steve! What a service to Newell owners. Thank you!!!! Things I learned. To turn on the generator to ensure enough power if you are not plugged in. You validated what the boys at Newell say, which is to be in "travel mode" when operating slides. Also, to clean the top of your slides. I think in a prior lesson you offered suggestions on using a little leaf blower to do this. Of course, I would need a short ladder to get high enough. And lastly to check the gaps around the slides before moving those puppies out.

    About slide rooms: If the gap is not equal what do you do?

    • @RVSquaredSteve
      @RVSquaredSteve  Год назад +1

      GREAT QUESTION! You have a few choices/decisions to make. If the coach is twisted, then you MUST do something to correct that problem. Sometimes moving the coach just a foot will be all that's needed. If you're on a big slope, again, it needs to be corrected. There IS an "advanced" method of moving slides INDIVIDUALLY, as you level the coach in-between moving each slide. I plan on producing a video showing this procedure sometime in the future. Finally, if nothing else can be done, and EVERY EDGE IS SAFE FROM RUBBING, it is up to the owner to weight the risks of moving a slide that is not equally weight-distributed. Neither I, nor VALID, would recommend doing this as...at that point...anything can happen; just as it did with me.

    Awesome video - nice level of detail. Quick question -- would leveling the vehicle before deploying the slides prevent the slide binding issues, or is there a reason that you don't level it first?

    • @RVSquaredSteve
      @RVSquaredSteve  2 года назад +2

      Thank you for watching and the compliment! Your question is one of "the most" asked...and controversial perhaps...of any setup, really. I can tell you, however, that as PER NEWELL (and, even others as well) that YOUR RIG SHOULD BE IN THE TRAVELing MODE WITH ALL AIRBAGS INFLATED TO RIDE HEIGHT. The REASON for this, is based upon the engineering of the frame; to be balanced and supported equally by the suspension and NOT COMPENSATING for any uneven surfaces. If the leveling system, whether airbags or jacks (for other manufacturers), are used, there can be undue stresses placed on the frame as the system tries to correct the leveling.
      Your concern is common, though, but if you understand that the entire structure is designed to be supported equally by all four points, then it's easy to see how a leveling system can upset that balance. Of course, this DOES NOT MEAN you should attempt to move slides on extremely uneven surfaces, which is EXACTLY what I did and I paid the price; a very careless move on my part, and I know better!!
      Hope this helps you!

    • @robe4314
      @robe4314 Год назад +1

      So what should you have done then? Just not use that slide in your driveway? Curious if there’s a way to remedy it if you’re at a really unlevel campsite or do you just need to find another location?

    • @RVSquaredSteve
      @RVSquaredSteve  2 месяца назад

      Sorry this question was buried! I will NEVER move a slide if my gaps are equal. I will also never level if my VALID is indicating excessive Slope. Most sites can be compensated enough to overcome the above, though.

    Thank you Steve. Great teaching approach and presentation. What is the average life of the the Newell slide seals and how much does it usually cost to replace them. We are evaluating Prevost and Newell coaches and your channel has been very helpful to that process. Take care and safe travels. 👍

    • @RVSquaredSteve
      @RVSquaredSteve  2 года назад +1

      You’re welcome Paul; thanks for watching and the compliments!
      Great question about the life of the seals. There is no “life expectancy” for seals. The techs at Newell say it’s dependent on too many conditions to draw any conclusion. If you neglect them, you may have an early leak. But just as with our’s, they’re in perfect shape after 6 years, so I’d not have a single worry about seals lasting well over 10 years and longer.
      Keeping them inflated (compressor on), routine exercising every couple weeks, and cleaning the slides prior to movement are all important factors.

    Why wouldn't you level the coach before deploying the slides? It would seem at ride height the coach could be not level.

    • @RVSquaredSteve
      @RVSquaredSteve  Год назад

      Bryan, even though we may have a hard time fully agreeing or understanding this procedure, it's absolutely what NEWELL and VALID recommends for standard procedures. But, simply put, it has to do with the Valid system actively adjusting as the slides are moved and weight distribution changes.
      There ARE rare situations in which we may deviate from these SOPs. Though not optimum, Valid suggest that you can level, run one slide out, then re-level each time a slide is moved.
      Keep in mind, we're not talking about being on a 10º+ off-level situation, or worse, having one wheel in a pothole. For the majority of time, sites that a Newell is in are expected to be fairly level to start with. Hope this helps a bit. Thanks for your question.

  • @moegeek

    Thank you for the quick reply to my previous question! I live in a fairly hilly area, and have often wondered if a vehicle such as yours would be able to even make it here, for instance, to load supplies for a trip. With the steep hills, even my car has clearance issues occasionally. Do the RV manufactures provide guidance regarding driving limits for these vehicles, such as slope angle, approach angle, departure angle, lateral angle? How much can a leveling system compensate for? I (obviously) don't have an RV, but am planning to change that soon!

    • @RVSquaredSteve
      @RVSquaredSteve  2 года назад +1

      I'm going to be honest with you, and tell you what you don't want to hear...
      If your CAR has issues, I guarantee a Newell will as well; even more so! In order to get onto our street, with is an abrupt enough slope, I have to "air-up", and switch my tag to share the load, and then slice the turn as shallow as possible. I'm able to cut that turn thin to win. However, if I wasn't able to approach that slope at a really thin angle, I'd bottom out at the rear skid and hitch. The Newell is so low, that even an RV pad with a slope will cause my rear end to sit on the ground. AT RIDE HEIGHT, my Newell is no more than around 8 inches at the rear skid.
      I had a 43' Dutch Star, which was better, but I still had to watch the angle of departure. The AOD is going to be your death sentence for these big buses.
      In terms of makers publishing clearance specs, I haven't seen any...other than the usual height and width.

    • @moegeek
      @moegeek 2 года назад +1

      @@RVSquaredSteve Thank you again for the excellent info. Sounds like when it’s time to get the bus, it will be time to establish a base of operations somewhere outside of our downtown place. We do have service trucks, fire trucks, and other large vehicles successfully navigate through, but I’ve not noticed anything like a 45’ motor coach attempt to make it through. I really enjoy your videos! keep up the great work!

    Steve, what do you do if there is no even gap on the perimeter of the slide? Does that mean you are not level enough?

    • @RVSquaredSteve
      @RVSquaredSteve  2 года назад +1

      Great question!!
      There is really only ONE offical answer to that question, no matter who your manufacturer is. And that is to reposition your rig. Most will tell you that it may only be a matter of inches to change the stress placed on your coach.
      I think the bigger issue will, "what exactly" would be an acceptable level of tolerance before you run into potential problems. Of course, I can tell you EXACTLY what WILL happen if your gap tolerance is ZERO...and we all know the painful end to that story!
