Tomasz was one of the greatest poets of modern jazz and he told a story every time he played. Thankyou Manfred for this beautiful tribute. We loved his music.

A poet, a painter, and above all - a philosopher of jazz. He understood, he knew.

Bardzo dawno temu bywalem w Krakowie na koncertach jazzowych, i innych zreszta tez: w Jaszczurach, w Krzysztoforach, w klubach studenckich, etc.
Quintet Stanki, jeszcze z Muniakiem i Seifertem widzialem kilkakrotnie. Podobnie jak tak tez i Mainstream, z Blizinskim ...
Zadnego z nich tez juz nie ma, odeszli jeszcze wczesniej. Pamietam , ze po smierci Seiferta, bylem wtedy studentem PK Wydz. Arch, trzepnelo mnie niezle. Osmielilem sie cos powiedziec o tym do kolegow. Jeden z nich, podczas zajec sportowych, zapytal mnie: "Czy sie z nim zeniles ?" ...
Zreszta pamietam rowniez z tamtych czasow Urbaniaka, wspomianego rowniez w komentarzach, a w Chicago zetknalem sie tez z Urszula Dudziak.
Macie racje ... sztuka pozostanie !
To jest nasze szczescie. Bo ja tez jestem artysta, choc tylko wizualnym ...

Thank you. I'v been listening Stanko for many years. For me he is the number ONE. Above Miles and others (in term of pure music poesia). There are feeelings nobody other can play so deep from heart. Sometimes it is so hard no to cry.
I wish this was played at my funeral.

Of course I want my most-loved-and-listened-to musicians to live forever, so I felt bereft to hear about Stanko’s death, and retrieved my five ECM cds by him from the shelf. There are gaps to fill....his absence a notable one. His style was unique; I consider it deeply soulful and poetic. Many thanks for this tribute.....a fine sampling.

  • @craiglehoullier9175

This is crushing news - the loss of my current favorite jazz musician - Soul of Things, Suspended Night, Dark Eyes, and especially, Lontano, have accompanied countless Sunday morning breakfasts, relaxing afternoons - such brilliance, fire, tenderness, soul - it is all there. His unique sound (his trumpet is instantly recognizable) has been such a comfort and joy. Charlie Haden, Paul Motian, Kenny Wheeler, John Abercrombie - now this - we are losing so many brilliant musicians. Thanks to ECM their music will live on forever....but the prospect of no new releases from any of these titans is a tragedy, though of course inevitable...for us all. Thank you for all of the pleasure that your creations and notes provided for our lives, Mr Stanko.

I discovered Tomasz (and beautiful Jacob Bro) with "Dark Eyes," an album that was the only source of light and beauty I had when I went thru a terrible divorce. I missed my children so much the pain was only lessened when I listened to it when I drove alone at night in my shitty car crying under the cold moon in a horrible city and was scared of the next day, so dull of regret and pain

A sad loss. I never got to see him play in person but I have managed to build up a collection of his recordings. He was a fine musician and instantly recognisable. Discovering his music made my aware of other fine Polish players like Marcin Wasilewski . A great musical poet has passed.

    • @Wajlonis
      @Wajlonis 6 лет назад +6

I was fortunate enough to see him live three times. His musical style fit perfectly to obscure, smokey jazz bars and cosy venues - one would think. And despite that, when he played in Gdansk, for 10 odd thousand people or so - with people cheering, shouting, being noisy as usual - he was able to silence this massive, enormous crowd with just one sound with his trumpet. One note. That's all it took to grab thousands of people by their throats and make them listen. Dig up "Solidarity of Arts - Stanko+" on RUclips, you won't regret it.

Thank you, Tomasz, for each and every note you played on your trumpet, your work with Krzysztof Komeda, and, of course, for your own timeless and innovative compositions, all of which will continue to give pleasure to us and will inspire future generations of jazz musicians. To his family, his loved ones, and close friends, please find strength to carry on (he would wish nothing less) and when you think of him remember the good times, when he made you laugh and feel loved. Also, please believe that his spirit is with you and with those he loved who have already passed on. I can imagine Tomasz and Krzysztof reunited, playing their old favorites and creating beautiful music, music that is truly universal. You, too, will some day be reunited with your Tomasz, I promise you.

I missed news of Tomasz's death until yesterday, nearly a year on. Very sad that he's gone but I was fortunate enough to see him live on a couple of occasions. Once at The Barbican in London in March 2010 where he played the music of Komeda and then at the London Jazz Festival in November 2017 where he signed my programme. One of the greats, he is badly missed but what a great legacy he has left us to enjoy always.
May he continue to Rest In Peace.
