This work was commissioned by Museum of Warsaw Uprising'44 some 15 years ago and Tomasz Stańko played on inauguration night with his band. One of his two concerts at the museum I attended, free of charge. Freedom of August 1944 when fighters gained control over much of the city. Song of the Sewers concerns dramatic evacuations of thousands of people via underground sewers that marked the Uprising struggles, the most famous evacuation at the final late September days of Uprising. "Music for expositions of Muzeum Powstania Warszawskiego" - reads a sign at the bottom on the record shown here, the famous sign of Fighting Poland right above it. Musically it is I believe the only outing with orchestra in his discography - orchestra accompanies the usual Stańko quartet of that time.

Not long time ago, I discovered for myself a polish Jazz, for example, works of Komeda (I would recomend "Crazy Girl" and "Muzyka Krzysztofa Komedy 3"). Due to this, probably, RUclips suggested to me that album.
I like this contrast in the key between compositions, especially, between the first ("Freedom in August") and the last ("Song of The Sewers"). Freedom in August creates the image of the pleasant summer walk or the fast ride on free, lighted by hot sun, road. At the same time, "Song of The Sewers" is similar to dark ambient in some kind. I should recognize my absence of knowledge of terminology, but that is the best expression of my thought, what I can find.
In any case, I had a pleasure to hear that album several times. Thanks, for the opportunity to make the acquaintance with that gorgeous music!

A typical Stanko/Wasilewski sound. Smooth and full, enveloping. I did not know that Stanko is still recording in Poland, I thought that he is out and about all the time - good for him, good for them.
